I've had a colostomy for two years and wish I had this video when I first had my surgery! Thanks for this important information. Can't believe how great you look while going through Chemo!

    Mam, I must tell you that I have watched your vids since you started this journey. I have been praying for you and your family. You have got the iron will it takes to overcome any obstacle that befalls you. Some people would be squeamish to watch a vid of this type, and be very mean to you for showing this material. I for one, applaud your will, and your desire to be honest with your journey. You have come a long, long way. Its people like you who are willing to take the lead, and show just how it is to deal with this disease, and how to handle it that makes you so brave. God Bless You and yours.

    My Dad had to get a colostomy bag at age 85. He is 89 now and still able to empty it and change it without assistance. I watched videos like yours here when we knew he was getting one. It was so helpful. His surgeon told him the risks, at his age, to reverse it were too much so he has it for life. I am so proud of him for adapting so well. Thank you for sharing your life and journey through healing!

    Thank you so much for sharing . When my son was a baby (39 years ago) he got ulcerative colitis and had to have his colon removed. So of course, all his ostomy care rested with me. I see they have made some improvements with the closure on the bag. The ones my son had used a clip, much like a clip you would use for a chip bag, very uncomfortable for the poor little guy. So I just ended up using a rubber band and wrapped it around until it was tight and then doubled the bag opening back onto itself and wrapped the band around again a couple of times. Back then, we didn't have all the skin creams etc., so it was very important to get everything clean and dry. I used to use a hair dryer on a very low setting to make sure the skin was dry or the bag wouldn't stick well and had a habit of peeling off at one end.. not a nice situation to be in. He had his surgery when he was 16 months old and by the time he was 5 years old they did a "pull through" and reattached the small intestine to the anal sphincter, So by the time he went to school he didn't have to worry about the bag any longer. However, being as he was never bowel trained, he did have some issues in that respect but you do what you have to do and I am happy to report, he is now a healthy grown man of 40 years old. Anyway, I wish you the best and again, thank you for sharing this very intimate procedure. I am sure there are people out there who have been told they have to have surgery and are scared silly, hopefully your video will help them to see it is something they can cope with. Take care and stay safe, Sandie from Ontario Canada.

    Nice job girl!! 💪🏻👊🏻 Your stoma looks great too!! I had a one piece in the beginning but after my stoma found it’s consistent shape, (3 months ish) I switched to a 2 piece. ConvaTec has a moldable wafer that molds to “hug” your stoma. No more cutting and it molds with your stoma’s little movements 😎 It’s awesome and I can get up to 2 weeks between wafer changes. Pouches - I usually change after a week. Also, they have a closed end mini pouch that works great for “special” moments 💕 and since it’s two pieces, snap it on, snap it off to go back to the regular size - without having to change the entire appliance. I haven’t filmed my routine but my hubs feels I need to share it so it’s on my list of “to dos” but I thought I’d share with you in case you felt like ever trying anything different- and since you’re sharing too (bravo!!) 🙂 Your skin looks great too so I certainly don’t see any reason to change, just sharing from one Ileostomate to another 💜 Keep up the great work!!

      @@normacolon9618 I'm so sorry to hear that. I know there are so many deseases in the bowl where the only solution is a stoma bag. And mostly it is for life then also. I feel for these people because for me (and Vanessa) it is only temporary, and even then it is very hard. The down side of removing a stoma after colorectal cancer, mostly when it was a LAR, many people have stool issues for the rest of their life, me included. I know some people who were desperate and asked to put the stoma bag back. I 'm rooting for Vanessa, that she is one of the luckiest and don't have too much issues with her stool after reversal of the bag. Norma, I also wish you the best! Hugs

    • @VanessaLPZ1
      @VanessaLPZ1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Great question! Try to do it before you eat. I’ve heard when you eat a big marshmallow it slows down everything. I tried crackers and bread before changing it. I knew when yo change it because I can see on the inside of bag, around my ileostomy it would lift around my stoma. And I would change it often every 2 days because it would leak and I didn’t want to cause issues

    How do you keep your bag from puffing up. I’ve had to buy loose dresses to hide the bulge! Between the puff and the liquid, I have to keep using the restroom. I’ve only had my illeostomy for five weeks, so I’m hoping I get more used to it. Did it take you awhile?

    • @VanessaLPZ1
      @VanessaLPZ1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it took me a while to get used to it. Mine puffs up when I eat foods that cause gas. Like cabbage, broccoli, ice cream etc. it’s natural for you to make gases and I remember at the beginning I would have to empty and “burp” my bag constantly. When I sleep try using a pad or a towel in case I have leaks.

      @@VanessaLPZ1 Thankyou for the info. I had a bowel resection as a result of another major surgery. I woke up with my unexpected illeostomy surprise. • @ineshadr9070

      If they take out a piece of your colon/rectal, than they stitch the two pieces together. To make it heal and don't get any leaking problems, they give an ileostomy, so the colon can heal without food coming through it all the time.When the colon is healed, they can reverse the ileostomy and you can digest food as before.
