Here I've got my 2006 Peterbilt 379 dragging fully loaded, 140 000lbs B-Trains around a fairly populated area. At the end I climb "Shantz Hill" which really sucks if you can't carry the momentum up... Normally I don't take this route, but I did here just for you guys!

Job well done! I get it with some passenger vehicles, they want to hurry up, and sneak around you, on the right side. I'm new to the industry myself, and seen a few knuckleheads already. Or even cut you off, within a few feet, of the nose, of the tractor. Folks plz if you are reading this, I'm not attacking anyone. But please please be careful when passing big rigs. I get it, they start off slow, and some are in a hurry, but do be careful. We don't want accidents, and more that anyone else. It's hard for big rigs to slow down safely, with, and without loads. We all want to get home safely, everyone of us. My 2 biggest gripes, people passing you on the right, when trying to make a right turn, and those who jump in front, with only feet to spare, in between.

It's a two way street bro, a lot of truckers give the rest of us a bad image. Riding on the bumper of a car is unsafe, cutting cars off is terrible, etc. I have 22 yrs over the road and I treat everyone as if they are my family in the car beside me. It's the difference between a professional and a steering wheel holder
I drive a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 quad cab dually with an eight foot flatbed and a 70 gallon diesel add on tank on the back with a I think a thirty foot gooseneck tandem axle trailer that’s outfitted to carry pipes and stuff. I normally am moving excavators and things so I’m loaded down so half the time when I’m trying to change lanes here in Houston, there’s always that one guy who has to be right at the very back of my trailer with just not enough room for me to move over causing me to miss my exit. That’s what pisses me off the most and people who pass so very slowly and I’ve had my blinker on the entire time but yet everyone behind that guy has to try an pass too!
Trucks look cool, they sound cool. I even love the smell of diesel. If it wasn't for an anxiety disorder I would try to live that life.
Yeah, same. I managed to acquire my CDL but I never got around to getting a job in that industry. I hear bad things and that makes me not want to enter.
@@TheyWhomTheGodsDetest: Idk man, just my opinion. But you put in the work for your CDL so you may as well take advantage. Do you live near any dairy farms? Hauling silage or manure is a pretty good gig, idk how well it pays though. Probably varies by farm.
I've heard shady things about the industry so I can understand your apprehension about it. I'm sure you could find a good place if you did your homework. Anyway good luck out there.

I've got anxiety disorder cus of this job,it ain't easy as it seems.
Same, there was a time when I would look into the various companies offering training and what not to help you get your CDL, for a contract term of course.
However, my anxiety has increased substantially in the past couple years. I hate driving my half ton pickup in town anymore let alone an 18 wheeler. Didn't use to bother me either which is something i just dont understand.
Folks don't seem to mind jumping in front of a loaded truck at a red light! Darndest thing i swear 🤤. Nice driving my brudda👍

This video did a great job at making me feel like an absolute douchebag for not realizing what it means when a heavily loaded truck has to get up a hill from a stop.I will be more mindful from now on.You driver deserve a lot of respect for putting up with us 4 wheelers and doing what it takes to keep this country moving.

Nice use of the 18 speed I remember hauling a load out of Woodstock Ontario in 1998 running double team to Burnaby BC with a 350 HP Mack CH 13 speed, the problem was it was a tandem tandem A train setup and I think we were about 108 000 pounds. Even coming out of Woodstock we were sucking on power on the few minor grades which made for an interesting trip in the rockies. Cummins and Cat are the way to go if heavy.
I'm pretty happy with my pete's cummins ISX15 550hp 2150tq 18 speed with 4.10's 46k rears and 14k front axle, I was out pulling other B-trains in the mountain's with ease but talk about hard on the truck pulling 140,000lb's up the mountain's. I don't know how you older guys did it back in the day, you guys are legend's. I feel so spoiled now a day's with all the truck stop amenities and CELL phones! Keep on truck'n man!
I find it amazingly stupid how some people cut in front of these tractors and think nothing of it. I've never had the chance to drive one loaded or on the roads, but I do have huge respect for them. I always give you guys the right away and in my lane when you need it.

Blows my mind how fast the speed limits are set in residential areas. Here Portland , Or those streets would be set at 25 and 30 max. You grab gears like an old timer! Nicely done!
Thanks for the kind words man! I’m Canadian, so here the speed limit is 50 kilometres per hour, which is roughly 30MPH, though, no one ever really goes that slow!
What great province are you from. Where are you based out of now? I’m a peislander. Tricked in all the provinces and most states. A,B,&C trains hopper bottom, tankers, propane bottles, reefer. Dry, logging, equipment floating, end dumps. 🤙🏼

I’m born, raised, live in Ontario, but have gone all over the us. Nowadays I mostly do Ontario and Michigan, and New York State and Pennsylvania when things are slow

I am from Eastern Europe and have never seen trucks like this in the real live. The American trucks are much cooler than the Russian, except ZIL- 130, which is legendary.

Tony, if you want to see real trucks, pulling real loads check out Australian road trains. This American stuff is nothing, what we do will blow your mind. 3,4,5 trailers is normal. Then we have power trains, where the trailers have the same engine and transmission as the truck and linked through fly by wire. Check it out mate and tell me what you reckon.

I don’t follow the engine brake rules I leave it on all the time because I drive an almost 80k lb vehicle so I need it. It’s an 75 Ton Rotator tow truck I drive. Big truck. When I have a tow on it, I need it to slow the big sucker down. The truck is a 2005 Kenworth W900L twin turbo c15 caterpillar like yours it makes 750hp though. Stock it made little bit over 600hp. Maybe 625 I guess. Truck was a heavy hauler pulled big lowboy before we got a new 2017 Miller century 75 ton rotator unit installed on its chassis. Our second rotator. Our first is our 2006 peterbilt 379 60 ton rotator. Then in 15 we bought 2015 peterbilt 50 ton rotator, 2017 we bought the 75 ton unit and put that on our most powerful truck pretty much lol. We thinking about selling the ole 06 379 it’s been a real fantastic truck. We don’t need 3 rotators.
I'm considering a career change - becoming a truck driver in a couple of years after putting in thirty years as a barber. Watching you drive makes me think I could do this too. Seeing a big rig being driven from the driver's point of view, I'm thinking it's not really all that difficult to do after some practice. Of course, that's me saying that in a recliner watching a TH-cam video...lol!😄
Oh yeah driving itself isn’t that hard once you get used to it. It’s the navigating new places, avoiding low bridges and no truck routes, backing into tiny hole in the wall deliveries, trying to find somewhere to park after a long day on the road.etc that’ll get ya ;)

@@callthemall I know you guys park at truck stops and rest areas. You're saying that's hard to do sometimes? What factors would make that difficult - not enough time left in your eleven hour driving allotment to make it to a ra or ts? Do you sometimes call it a day early depending on the amount of time you have left to drive in relation to the distance to the next available ts or ra?
The biggest thing is not enough physical truck parking spots for the amount of trucks on the road. Most truck stops are full for the night by around 6pm nowadays, even worse now because elogs are forcing people to park early to guarantee a spot for the night!
Yes, I've already considered the points you've mentioned. I don't go to truck stops very often, but several customers of mine are either drivers or dispatchers. I've actually discussed the points you made in your reply with several of them - calling it quits early and possible hos violations. I am a person who errs on the side of caution, so I would definitely call it quits early to avoid an hos violation with respect to distance to a rest area. I know that trucking has its bs too...😁

We had a new 1986 with 11 miles on it freightliner with small engine and 10 seed,then a new Volvo with 10 miles and took it 16000 got read of for the head light keep going up and down at night they 100 or that they had to fix them we got a older one we keep it until they made us give it it had about 200000 on it. Then we were given new fright liner all with small engine's and 10 speeds. We drove for 4 yr together in all.

It takes guts to drive tractor trailers. I only have a class B and drive a tandem bobtail truck. I’m only 36 and been offered to get my class A payed for. Don’t have the guts to do it but awesome videos.

Curious. What's with the extra tall shifter? I've seen it before, but I've never had one in any of the trucks I've driven. Is it simply a "look", like Ape Hanger handlebars on a Harley, or are you just really short and have the seat all the way down on the floor? ;-)
You made a turn at 2:49 and had to use the space in the turn lane for the opposing traffic. Would you have been able to make it if there were cars in that lane or would you have to take a different route? Thanks!

140 with no permits, thats $$$$ right there. Its also insane to me here in PA 80 is all we can gross. I almost got thrown in jail for pullin a 100 thousand lb load into the landfill..
@@kewlmanable You're lucky, PA usually takes you to jail over that shit. They caught that tanker driver near Allentown, he made a wrong turn onto a restricted road and spent a month in jail and had to post 25k in bond

I'll alway's love the sound of a cat, but I've never been impressed with the performance. Respect for not running the jakes in the residential like lots of super truckers do, give us all a bad name. I'm lucky that my pete's ISX15 is quiet enough I could get away with it if I really wanted to.

There's stock, which is usually lower than what is comfortable. There's extended to a point of the arm being entended and level which is comfortable for me, and there is scraping the roof, which I have no experience with

Any tips for shifting up from a dead stop loaded on a steep hill with a 13 speed? Smash the gears, start in a higher gear or ride it out in lo all the way up?
Definitely going to want to start in a low gear, and with a 13 you’ll probably have to way over rev the first couple gears to get enough momentum to make the first couple gear shifts. Nothing wrong with just holding the gear going up the slope when you start from a dead stop
Been driving for almost 25 years now, after the first 8 or so years you learn to stop giving an F what they think when they cause you to come to a complete stop on a step hill, if they don't like it, they can piss off around me if they have the room. Also, the way you deal with the jack asses that like to not back up when you are swinging wide on a tight turn.... well I got all the time in the world to sit there until they back the hell up and let me swing. I think I once ha a stand off with a stubborn lay for nearly 10 minutes until a cop showed up and told the lady to stop being a dip shit, because they knew there was no way in hell I was going to be able to back that trailer up now that I was committed to that turn. People don't understand how much patience you have to have to deal with these brain dead idiots that got their drivers license out of a cereal box.

Ive always thought that non cdl people should have to watch videos on big rigs and how to properly drive around them and what Not to do so they get a better understanding of what us truckers have to put up with. I haul 164,000 lb side dump trains locally in upper MI and people have absolutley no respect for that much weight rolling down the road. Would be sweet owning my own rig, especially a Pete and a truck with a long hood.

The one on highway 21 going into forest, where it drops to a 50 waay too early, I blare those engine brakes every time going through those open corn fields....

Question: Haven't driven in years but when you are starting out are you in 1st low on the stick and high side on the button and then going to 2nd low range and button to low ??
Yeppers! When loaded at 140’000lbs it’s too heavy to start in 1st gear, and the jump between low and 1st is pretty massive, so I do low(high split) to start off then go to first(low split) and on from there.

An 18 SPD isn't complicated, aside from Low and reverse, it's nothing more than an 8 hole shift pattern, split the big hole as needed. Unless you are super heavy, splitting every gear is nonsense.
An 18 speed is just a glorified 13 speed same thing

Why the too long gearstick?
I know the area of the top of the hill around 7:40 well. I get it suck to stop however if a car going that far in front of you bothers you that much on such a small hill PLEASE never drive in the mountain or bc
This may be a dumb question. But are you checking your mirrors so frequently (ex. 0:45-0:50) to see if anyone is trying to pass you on the left? Or is it to check the trailers position in the lane?
Ahaha that spot was just checking out what’s going on on the 401 as I passed over top of it! But yeah around corners and stuff for sure I’m watching the mirrors for everything.

I've heard a lot of drivers say they never use the clutch when shifting. Do you use yours if not why not?
Nope! Because it goes into gear just fine without it and it saves repetitive strain on your left knee

Engine brakes are very noisy so in most residential areas they prohibit the use of engine brakes
It's a mechanical or electronic controlled actuator that opens the exhaust valves, therefore not allowing an compression to happen and slowing down the rotation of the pistons.
