  • Within Tolkien’s works, a few winters brought forth such perilous colds and were named in memory of them! Today, we explore those winters and the stories that occurred during them. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on the Long Winter and Fell Winters in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

“So fair, so cold, like a morning of pale spring still clinging to winters chill.”
It’s definitely a season that isn’t focused on all that much in the tales, but it certainly has it’s affects on the people.
I personally love winter, but it is difficult to endure for long periods of time. It will test even the strongest out there and bring all to a standstill. But I like to think that those that survive it go thru a cleansing process and wen spring arrives it makes those who lasted as pure as snow :)

Definitely seeing parallels to Fimbulvetr of Norse mythology here.
Frost and snow may melt, but a chill that clings to the spirit is harder to shake. For that, I thank Tolkien for his optimism, though I may not always share it.

Nice to see someone else saw this connection, too! Top that with the fact that Fimbulvetr might be a reminiscent story of a real occasion - namely, the extremely harsh weather of 535-536 and onward. What is now surmised to be a series of vulcanic eruptions with intervals of some years caused sun lose its strength for several years lowering temperatures and causing crop failures in probably global scale. It was well recorded by Byzantines, with further mentions from Ireland to China. One can only imagine what it was like in Nordic lands at that time.

I sure do greatly love JRR Tolkien's worldbuliding and even puts in great detail describing about the most minor events we pay not much mind to in the books. His themes are extremely heart warming compared to most fantasy writers who do not do what he does and his friend CS Lewis being some of the few that do that if only more people would do this kind of creativity these days. Yahuah bless and have a great Christmas you all.

"Except on the high moors of the Northfarthing a heavy fall was rare in the Shire, and was regarded as a pleasant event and a chance for fun. No living hobbit (save Bilbo) could remember the Fell Winter of 1311, when the white wolves invaded the Shire over the frozen Brandywine." Fellowship, Book 2 Chapter 3. Hobbits could use axes and bows to kill the wolves as well. It was hard times, but never mess with Hobbits.

The recording of those audiobooks by Mr. Dragash was impeccable; I listen to them on a nightly basis. I think there are copyright issues involved with both the text itself and the use of Howard Shore's scores from the films, making this task a formidable undertaking. Not to mention the time commitment required to record an audiobook and do justice to the original texts.
I'd LOVE for Yoystan to record this material, but the odds are stacked against him; I am extremely grateful and appreciative of Mr. Dragash's recordings, and I will be ok if I never have the pleasure of listening to another. These audiobooks, in my opinion, are the single best way to consume the Lord of the Rings (obviously after having first read the books and seen the films).
On another note, I'm extremely sad to see the Hobbit recordings by Bluefax taken off YT; those are amazing as well so please subscribe to that channel.

I can actually say for the first time with your great videos Yoystan... FIRST! First View too! Jk, in all seriousness this was a fascinating video, always thought the Fell-Winter was linked as you said to Sauron's newfound mastery over Arda. I wonder if Sauron had won, if the land might well have become permanently one of winter, coldness and death forevermore.
If I had to measure the cold, of the land it had to be between -40 & -80 in some places, I wonder if the Nature of Middle-Earth or Morgoth's Ring has anything to say about the exact temperature of the Fell-Winter?
Can't wait for your livestream Yoystan! Will definitely be in attendance in the chat when the day comes! What time on wednesday will it be at?

Sometimes I think it would be wonderful if some of the quieter stories of Middle Earth were made into TV shows. It wouldn't have to be done in a chronological fashion, although they could do it that way. They could also include the conflicts - I am sure the war between the Orcs and Dwarves would be rather epic, but the quieter, softer stories such as how the Hobbits made it through such hard winters and how Gandalf grew to know them better would provide a wonderful contrast with the more dramatic tales. The idea that the land and its people were so richly imagined that there could be stories so subtle and eloquent and yet so powerful, just as our real world possesses, would only go to make for a wonderful set of tales which would make for even greater immersion into Tolkien's world.
It would take a very deft directorial hand though and I am not sure whether there is a director out there capable of taking on such a task.

As is pertains to the chronological order of the events and people in the legendarium, in which order exactly do the books go.
