The Tool To Have In Your Truck

  • We build most of our custom homes without heavy machinery, so I have a few extra tools that I always keep in the truck to get the job done! This video is about the cable puller (AKA come along): how we use it; other accessories we have for certain situations... and we also do some shopping and explore the price of the different models available at our local Tractor Supply Store. This is a must have tool in my opinion for the pro builder or do-it-yourselfers.

Use to use them to stretch chain link fence fabric. Also to pull posts. Very versatile tool. Always called it a come-along too.

When I turned 16 way back in the day my dad put three tools in my truck and said you never leave without these tools a jack a 4 way lug wrench and a come-a-long. That come-a-long has saved my ass so many times when I was a teen to get my truck out the ditch.

I just found this channel, and I must say that it is a treasure trove of relevant information...and no extraneous bullsh!t. Seems like too many TH-camrs, after they get alot of subscribers...their heads blow up and they start to yammer about all kinds of irrelevant BS before they get to the point of the video. Three minutes in and the viewer is wondering WTF?
None of that here. Nice work guys.
I'm not in the trade, but I'm fixin' to start building a house. I am learning alot from you. Many thanks.

One thing to be aware of is that not all carabiners, hooks, chain, etc. are rated for hoisting. Be careful if you are doing overhead hoisting.
    Love you videos.

Can confirm: a come-along is one of the most versatile tools to have on any construction job. Framing, fencing, roofing, etc. I’d also add a Hi-Lift jack to essential truck gear that is indispensable for getting certain jobs done or getting yourself out of a jam. I used mine to lift a staircase enough to slip in some vapor barrier when I realized it had been missed and my strong-backs were sitting on bare concrete.

Agree 100%! Also, a Hi lift can become a come-along in a pinch...

I use a Wyeth Scott more power puller with synthetic line which is a pleasure to work with. May be overkill for most needs but I love it.

The pulleys you pointed to are snatch blocks. You can double the pulling rating by using one. I have used them to pull walls and posts too . Don’t necessarily need one for that , but if you are stuck in the mud they are super handy

Yea for the old Come-A-Long. I have had a "cheap" one for 39 years now. It has served me well and saved my butt many a time, but often with difficulty due to it being cheap, old and well used. I think it's time for me to do a serious quality upgrade and maybe get a strap version. But I will shop around and try to get a better price than what Tractor Supply has to offer. Thanks for the video.

You can find them all the time at flee markets and pawn shops for like 20 bucks around me.
I never use straps like that have always just tied loops with water knot's if you put a nail through the knot before you put load on it comes apart easier.

Ask practically any TSC employee in any store for a double sheave becket block and they won't have a clue what you're talking about. Indeed, I've never found one who even knows what a becket (on a block) is -- even when a becket block was 3 feet from the sales guy's face sitting on the display rack. On the other hand, in West Marine, I've never had an employee who works in the block section of the store fail to know what a becket is.

Perkins must be a climber because that’s what real carabiners are used for. I grew up calling those thing shackles or repair links since they are often used to join two lengths of chain together. Calling it a quick link makes sense too.

Be careful! Come alongs are only designed for horizontal pulling. They are very dangerous to use for overhead lifting. They only have a clutch, which can slip.
