Thank you for the video. I recently bought a reel mower. I was dreading using it. My power mower broke down and the reel mower was an inexpensive alternative to repairs, or buying a new mower. After FedEx dropped it off, I had it assembled in about twenty minutes and was mowing my yard. I was surprised at how enjoyable it really is.

We have had a bit of a drought in this part of the world and the grass was on hold most of the summer. Only just started to green up again!
thankyou for posting this, tried this on the more modern version -plastic wheels and gears otherwise it's exactly the same. I attached an electric drill to the gear shaft and it made the job a lot easier.
Notice that when normally mowing, and at the times when you want to 'walk' the mower over to a distant spot in the garden, that all you do is to 'upside-down' the mower, and walk it like a barrow. The blades are stationary, and then when you get to the spot, you turn the mower over, to begin cutting? Well, seeing as you have gone through the process of reversing the gearing, to do the sharpening - try this - Put the mower upside down again, and walk it as before!!... The blade now spins! and the sharpening process in reverse is happening!! and no danger of fingers getting cut too :)
567 people have watched your video. That is about one every day. As far as rotating the blades, I would have tried setting the mower on the floor and pushing it until the blades were sharp, then after cleaning up I would reverse the cogs back to test the results. Excellent video! I have a Qualcast Concorde electric cylinder mower that I bought for £10 from a local facebook selling site for our small back garden. Blades were duller than the tyres on my car! I bought one of those clamp-on sandpaper strip jobs today, and that put an edge back on the blade, but it's still a bit rough around the edges. Would this method take out the sandpaper marks I am left with? It seems to refine the edge greatly and pretty much finish it off! May have to get a tub of grinding paste and give it a go. Have a new old stock bottom blade on the way as that's chewed up, so will get that fitted and adjusted first. Did you just adjust the cylinder against the bottom blade just so and get started? Will have to find a way of attaching a drill to mine since it's electric, unless there's a way of making the motor run backwards (don't think there is!) Either way, great video to show the theory and practise!
beko1987 Thanks for viewing and the fantastic comments. I do think the grinding paste will take of the roughness of the old sandpaper strips. I'm assuming the Concorde is belt driven and this belt can be removed via the side cover. This will allow you to rotate the blades without rotating the motor. Yes I did have to adjust the bottom blade. Loose to start with with the corse grit paste and then slower reduce the gap and use the fine paste. If you do it by hand you know its working by the stiffness of the cylinder and the grinding noise it makes.. As I have mentioned before please be careful of your fingers, especially if you find some way to rotate those blades with a drill!
Robert Gipson yes, its a belt driven machine. Having had it apart to strip clean and grease all the moving parts it should be easy to spin it backwards somehow. Have a new belt on order from ebay as although its not stretched its missing a tooth or two. Will get the new bottom blade bedded in and run it over the sandpaper sharpener again and give your paste method a shot! I have my mums old flymo compact 330, and even with a new blade its shocking. Heavy to push (and im not a small chap), blows grass everywhere and just generally rubbish. Will be going on facebook soon! As the advert i found on youtube says, its less bovver than a hover!

Thanks for uploading this video, especially mention of the valve grinding paste. I've just sharpened a Qualcast electric cylinder/reel mower using the same paste, it did a great job. I was able to use a cordless drill and hex socket to turn the cylinder in reverse 👍.
Very instructional, thanks! When cylinder mowers cut properly, the finish is unsurpassed, in my opinion. Question: Surely you could just swop the gears around, put the split pins back in and push the mower, with the paste on the blades, around the garage? It would save a lot of elbow grease...
Hi Rob! My neighbor just got rid of this old fashioned mower. I didn`t try it yet, but I am pretty sure that it is gonna work. Talking about the video you have posted: I wouldn`t ever try to take such thing apart before I have swallowed 4 pack of beer. Thing is: don`t touch an old shit , because it will start to smell even worse. Good job anyway and best regards!
Hi Mirek. Well done on getting an old mower. I would lay off the beer before doing anything like this! i'm thinking stray fingers getting into those nice sharp blades. It's been three years since I posted this video and the old mower is still doing a grand job. Thank you for commenting and viewing my video. Good luck.

I have the same model, and has served very well, and still will cut any grass just as well as the 16 HP tractor mower. I did a total pull down and reassemble a while back, and accidentally stumbled upon the wheel reversal - when I reassembled the cogs in the wrong places! If I had seen this video I might have tried sharpening the blades whilst it was like it... Anyhow I have since not bothered to consider sharpening per se! I simply keep on mowing, but put extra time aside to finely adjust/readjust blade clearances. I am also very careful to never hit any rocks. The blades effectivness will eventually end, when the bottom plate eventually wears totally away
LOVE YOU VIDEO AND THE INCLUDED OUTTAKES MAKES IT EVEN MORE INTERESTING, AFTER WATCHING IT THOUGH IT STRIKES ME THAT WE COULD GLUES OR DOUBLE SIDED TAPE SOME ABRASIVE PAPER TO THE FLAT PLATE AND FEED THE BLADES CLOSER AND CLOSER TO IT WITH THE HEIGHT ADJUSTERS, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHT.. And after seeing how well you have restored yours,i am seriously thinking about restoring a qualcast panther which was given to me.. sorry for the caps, and thanks again fella
Hi Ian. Thanks for the viewing and the comment. Your idea is not without merit as there is a commercial product that does more or less what you suggest. I think you have to fit an abrasive strip to the bottom blade, make adjustments and turn the blades. Never used one myself so I cant comment on how good they are. Enjoy your mowing.
+Robert Gipson I did gain some useful information from your video. I have one minor complaint, I would like to have seen what you were adjusting with the screwdriver to release the tension. My mower needs. blades sharpened & it does have problems like you fixed with the couple turns of a screwdriver. Thank You
HI Stoneder. Okay. I shall do my best to explain. It's a pity we cannot post pictures here! If your bottom static blade is like a lot of mowers. If you look at the sides you will probable see two adjustment screws on each side. These may be locked with a nut one the screw thread. Look at the blade and you will notice it has a spindle running through the middle. By adjusting these screws the blade will rotate around the spindle therefor going closer or further away from the reel blades. You need to slacken all those lock nuts before making adjustments. Make saw the bottom blade is in-line with the reel blades across the whole width and then tighten those lock nuts. A good adjusted blade should cut a thin piece of paper across the whole blade. Sounds a bit complex, but I reckon if you look at with the information above you will sort it. And, don't forget to watch those fingers. Thanks for viewing and thanks for commenting. Hope I have helped.
Hi thanks for the video. Am off to get some paste as soon as the shops open. Is it still possible to get a pair of the rubber wheel treads. I picked up an old Ransomes mower a while back unfortunately the wheel treads were broken. It seems the original company ceased trading or making them a long time back. Thank you. !!
Hi Rich. I wish I could help you with your quest for rubber wheel treads, but, I just don't know. Wish I could help. I thank you for viewing and your comment. Good luck with your project.
Robert, Can you help, I have just got retrieved from the skip a qualcast E1 with a right wheel broken. Do you know any supplier for parts to this wonderful yet simple Lawn mower ?Mitch
Bought a modern version of one of these recently, and I can tell from the video yours is so much heavier. Which probably lends it more downward force and a better cut. "They don't make them like they used to" in action. Oh well, I doubt I could afford a solid cast one anyway ;)
Soon be time to get this old beauty out of winter storage, give it the once over and start to use it on my small lawn. Not expecting to have to sharpen yet. Maybe later on this summer
If you switch the gears from one side to the other and flip the paws over to it can be pushed and the cutter will rotate backwards. Running backwards drags the edge off to produce a even edge across the flat I guess would be called the anvil . I think this guy just stopped to soon before it was even to the edges it only cut paper in the middle . I got a freebie along the road and it is very rusty I tried lapping and I’ve not got it done. I since took out all the adjusters and ran a tap threw them and a die on the bolts so I can have easier adjustments to try this again . So much rust this one may not come back to life .
141,141 views, Thats a play with numbers. Thanks for every last one of them. Hope my video is of use to a lot of you, but, please heed the warning about possible trapping fingers in the blades if you try this method. Health and Safety warnings are here to protect us.
Installed these on a riding mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.
Good video could use a bit of reworking with the frame, but this shows the importance of the pawl and what it actually is. I'm a first timer trying to sharpen a Scott's reel mower and I find this to be an incredibly informative video. Better than others I've watched on TH-cam
Thanks for your comment. A close look at the blades edges suggest it has done the job and the paper cut test looks good. Just waiting for a dry day to test it ! Been so wet around these parts lately. I'm glad you found my vid useful. Good luck with your backlapping.
To back lap a cyclinder mower you must first make sure that your blades don't have any bends from hitting stone ect. Also you have to deajust the cyclinder so that it is lightly rubbing the sole plate . The pinging noise is the sole plate springing when the cyclinder is turned it bends the sole plate down then as the it hoses over the top the plate springs back.
Hi Fabian. Truthfully this is difficult to answer. It depends on so many things. Mower in good order, sharp, height setting, type of grass, how wet it is, how strong and willing you feel doing the task. Sadly I no longer have to use this old mower, but I used to enjoy using it without to much hassle at all. Therapeutic in a way and a good work out if you have a large area to cut.
Just about to do this on my 30 inch Atco Royale and was wondering if that very valve grinding paste was up to the job so a very insightful video, thanks
HI I think it,s something that happens when you sharpen anything. One edge will be jagged sharpened in one direction and feathered in the other.Normal sharpening of anything should be be done leading from the tip of the blade to the body on each side. This produces tiny burrs on the cutting edge which can then be removed by final honing towards the tip of the blade. Not easy to describe an answer to your question. Hope this is OK. Many thanks for the question and for viewing. Appreciate it.
Robert Gipson Hi Thanks for your explanation & nice video. I have the same mower, which needs sharpening. My problem would be taking the wheel off, and swapping the gears to make the blade rotate to opposite way to cutting direction. I just could not be bothered doing it :D
bud kor Simple my friend...just a pair of pliers and a screwdriver and that cap and split pin is out. Go to 1:56 on my vid to see how. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I currently use an abrasive kit which i got from amazon, it is expensive though, but i don't understant why the method you use (grinding paste) requires the cylinder to go in reverse. The kit i use currently uses sanding strips and in forward motion, but is esentially the same method as you have used, so why the reverse action? Thanks for the vid, i will try your method certainly but i think it should work ok with normal forward mothion.
I wonder if the principle is that in reverse the flat part of the rotating blade hits the stationary blade before the edge. If you progressively grind down the flat you end up with a sharp edge. Slightly shaky logic I admit, but it's what I like to call lateral thinking.
Thank you for your video and here are a few thoughts about it. There is a youtube video of sharpening a manual reel mower where the producer attached a power drill, 3/8-inch chuck, to the mower shaft after removing the gear cog and the pall. Otherwise he used the same technique for the backlapping, but without having to twist the shaft by hand. Also, since the paper cutting test failed on one side, should you not tighten the bedknife against the spinning blades before backlapping on that side? Wouldn't the gap prevent the backlapping from occuring on that side?
Thanks for viewing and commenting George. Have to agree, a drill attached is a good idea as it can be hard work moving that wheel. As for bedknife, I seem to remember that I had to shorten the video to stop it from getting to boring and I seem to recall I did several adjustments during the process. Good of you mention it and great to known the someone is watching and paying attention ! Thanks George.
Hi AP. Okay, I shall do my best to explain, but, only on this type of mower. It may well be the same on other types. The lower static blade is the one that is adjusted. This is the blade that the rotating blades will just touch the lower blade and where the cutting is carried out. As long as this lower blade is true and straight it can be adjusted by some locking bolts at either side. These will rotate the blade towards or away from the rotating blades. You can see by the wear on the lower as to the part that is touching the rotating blades. To tight will give you hard work to push and wear the blades quickly. To loose will give you easy to push but very bad cut, if any. If the lower blade is bent then no amount of adjustment is going to give you a good cut, replacement is the best option. if you can cut paper over the whole width of the blade then you have a good set. Be careful to not run over stones and most of all WATCH YOUR FINGERS. Good luck.
Hi Muthu. Difficult for me to advise you. I am assuming you live in India? Forgive me if I am wrong. I can suggest you maybe track down a garden supplies near you and maybe ask for advise. If you are in the UK then go ahead and use your favourite search engine with type and model number. It might return a good result for you. My thanks for viewing and comment.

Hi Ian. I believe it would. The H1 is an old model that I think is quite like the E. Rotating blade against a lower static blade. Just please be carful of those fingers if you do try it. Thanks for viewing and also thanks for the question. `Makes these videos worthwhile doing
if you do some research you will see some tools that will allow you to use a drill without removing the pawl it's like a socket you wont be sweating as much lolol
"Hi Guys...something I've never tried before..." Viewer's select instructional videos for experience and expertise, not to watch someone fumble through their first attempt. Just imagine how clogged up the internet will be in another 10 years with this crap. Thumbsdown...bye.
Hi 1966johnywayne. I except your comment. No worries. I have to say theres a lot of guys who would not agree. My thanks for viewing anyway and for commenting. It's through comments like yours that instructional videos can be improved.
I could not disagree more. I found it very refreshing that the guy said right from the start that it wasn't an instructional video but more of an experiment. I have wasted many hours watching half of a video before I've worked out that the person did not have a clue what they were doing. TH-cam already is 'clogged up' with expert pretenders. One of my pet hates (actually #1) because I self study/research lots of subjects on here. I learnt enough here to do my petrol cylinder mower because he gave the basic facts right at the start. I partially watched 2 others who waffled on about all sorts. That's another pet hate, when they insist on spending a long time explaining the obvious about universal jobs and tools (how to measure, how to use a screwdriver etc) when you want to know the specifics about the subject you have searched for.

I simply keep on mowing, but put extra time aside to finely adjust/readjust blade clearances. I am also very careful to never hit any rocks. The blades effectivness will eventually end, when the bottom plate eventually wears totally away
Glad to hear this Tifino. Enjoy your mowing. Many thanks for viewing and commenting.
Bleeding marvelous video thank you old boy.
Thanks you PJ.
beautiful machine hard to believe 60 years old (my age precisely)
Your vid is a godsend. I'll start on mine when I work up the guts.
You might like to try these people. Maybe some help on the forum. Worth asking. Good luck.

Always a good idea to have a full dress rehearsal before going public. lol
Bought a modern version of one of these recently, and I can tell from the video yours is so much heavier. Which probably lends it more downward force and a better cut. "They don't make them like they used to" in action.
Oh well, I doubt I could afford a solid cast one anyway ;)
You are so correct HR. You sure don't want to hump this one about for to long. I thank you for your comment and viewing. Happy mowing.
I lifted my mower onto a table to do this but, I broke my fingernail. So I went out and bought a new mower. 😁
Fantastic to hear from from you Ben and glad my video is helpful to you. Good luck with your sharpening.
So how you supposed to sharpen the blades ? I don't get what he is doing 😕
How hard are these to push?
I have problem put handle screws came off. I do not know how to put handles on lost screws?
DPeac OZ
Buy new screws.
Simple.........
No?
Why does the blade have to be rotated opposite direction to normal cutting direction when shrpening?
Nowadays they got a lever where you can insert by the wheel and turn the wheel.... and it will turn as fast as the "the wheel of fortune".
So your video proved that backlapping doesn’t work on a dull cylinder? Also that’s valve lapping compound you’re using and not cylinder grinding paste
Very observant of you s1914. Thanks for your comment and your view.
Mine in the middle does the same thing, it doesn't touch the paper
may i get one?
Thanks George.
how did u setup the blade plz tall me
Good luck.
Robert Gipson Thanks
@@RobertGipson how I can buy this blades
Great video mate, always wanted to know how one of these works.just bought a cheapo one from tesco, which aint too bad,not half as good as this one you have, cheers fella
Missed your comment 7 months ago David. Thanks for that and thanks for watching.
Would this work for the h1 model
Hi Ian. I believe it would. The H1 is an old model that I think is quite like the E. Rotating blade against a lower static blade. Just please be carful of those fingers if you do try it. Thanks for viewing and also thanks for the question. `Makes these videos worthwhile doing
@@RobertGipson thanks I will try it
My only note is your gloves. You should wear thick gloves because you deal with sharp blades. its a brilliant mower..
Your point is well taken Alaa. You are quite correct in your statement. Health and safety first. Thank you for your comment and viewing.
nice well explained

i need a video to design a blade > with dimension >> and design procedure>>
Cant help you with that request. Best of luck with it.
i just painted the grinding compound on the blades, don't want to or have the materials to sharpen it
Kara...how did that work out?
your doing an amazing job there your gonna be good for a few decades lololol
Cheers Nick. No one is more surprised then me as to the popularity of this video. Many thanks for viewing and for commenting.
if you do some research you will see some tools that will allow you to use a drill without removing the pawl it's like a socket you wont be sweating as much lolol
Yes..I become aware of that after I did the first sharpen Nick. Typical Lol. Seems I can learn something from my own video!
saludos desde venezuela que altura puede cortar
it didn't show how to sharpening!!!
super!
Thanks for the 'Super'
you are gonna chop your fingers off the way your performing lol

Love the how-to videos where the guy doesn't even know how-to. Not a waste of time at all.
Thanks SR. You can tell in no way did I practise or rehearse my video. Appreciate your comment. Oh. I hope the video was useful for you?
Please don't drink and shoot videos ;)
Never touch the stuff......
Much respect for your willingness to accept critisism and respond in a civil manner.
The viewer is interested in the person broadcasting themselves, the actual subject matter is just a detail.
