The few Russian submarines do not frighten NATO. All of them are permanently shadowed by hunting submarines as soon as they set sail. If they get any stupid ideas, they are sent to the bottom of the sea forever. The Russians know that. So this is a pure Russian propaganda show.

What exactly is an Akula class submarine? I see Akula (Projekt 971)and Typhoon (Projekt 941) subs here.
There are only a few Typhoons, not the most quiet sub out there. Frightening payload to be sure but the U.S. with NATO countries have these things tracked.
The actual Akula there are a few more of, but their role is more of an attack submarine rather than a nuclear MIRV ICBM carrier.
The new kids on the block are the Belgarod class and the Yasen class submarines. The Russians would need a lot more of them to be a real threat.

Hmmm. The US has smaller subs that are just as silent, just as lethal but faster, quicker menuverabilty more efficient with a crew that trains more than any other country that has subs.
