Missing is also insane. Amy is incredible and love all her songs. When her Fallen album came out I had a CD Walkman and cried when my CD Walkman broke I went through 4 until iPods came out. This album has no skips. Whispers is insanely beautiful. Haunting is this genre.
The song is by the band Seether. She was dating the lead singer (Shaun Morgan Welgemoed). They then had a messy break up. "Fake It" is the song he wrote about her, and "Call me when you're Sober" is the song she wrote about him :)
Of all of her songs, "My Heart is Broken" I think really embraces her voice with the piano. I love that song so much because of her singing it. Her voice is amazing.
Amy Lee is a far greater songwriter than people tend to give her credit for. Couple that with an amazing voice and you get the powerhouse all around musician she's been from the start.
Amy Lee was so different from anything that was on the radio when Evanescence first appeared. I remember being fascinated by the beauty of her voice. It wasn't until I was introduced to symphonic metal that I realized how truly special she is. Thanks for this one Elizabeth!
The timbre of her voice is incredible, like you said balanced. If I had to describe it I would say her voice sounds like it is balanced on a razor edge. So consistent, sharp, and smooth.
Amy Lee's most incredible vocal range I'd have to say is Sweet sacrifice, it's a must listen. And shout out to all of Elizabeth's unknowingly making Evanescence references, "whisper", "haunted" etc
"Tourniquet" is my favorite song on the album, but the funny thing is, it’s not entirely an Evanescence original. It’s a partial cover of "My Tourniquet" by Soul Embraced, Rocky Gray’s death metal band. The original didn’t have the same second verse, Amy wrote this one.
I really like one of the small details at the beginning where she sings 'I'm going under' in the background. An effect is applied to make it sound like she's gargling, like drowning under water, to fit the theme of the song.
I listened to a ton of Evanescence in college. They got paired with Lincoln Park a lot in my dorm in 2002 (we had a weird section 🤣). I haven't listened to Evanescence in a while, but I always remembered Amy Lee's voice. It's such a magical, golden voice. It was my gateway drug to symphonic metal, so to speak. Also, she's doing that piano herself. Multi-talented. One funny thing I took from this: I must have listened to this song 50 times and I always thought the line in the pre-chorus was "I...dive again" and not "I'm...dying again". Which made sense in my brain because "dive" goes with "going under" and the imagery of diving into water in the video. Crazy that I've had this line wrong in my head for over 20 years!
Amy Lee is so damn talented. The way she can harmonize with herself is incredible. On their self-tilted album her 2nd and 3rd voices are so amazing. The bridge parts of "Lost in Paradise" and "Erase This" are a great examples of it!

I saw Evanescence open for Muse last year. Amy Lee was amazing. There were two young women (early twenties) a couple of rows in front of me. They were super excited to be there. They sang along and danced for the entire set. I wished I was thirty years younger so I could join them. It amazes me when young people get off on music that was released decades ago.
Evanescence opening for... Muse. That's laughable, to say the least. Muse should open for them. It's like when fucking A-Ha opened for Katy Perry back at Rock in Rio 2014 lol
As a teenager, the first time I heard her voice I fell in love. She just had something I'd never heard before in this type of music. I love the Wilson Sisters and Stevie Nicks and all the great female leads, but Amy Lee just made me feel like she was singing to me.....just beautifully amongst the chaos
I LOVE how music kinda stores itself in another memory bank. Because I had 100% forgotten about this song, but the moment I saw the title, the whole thing just came rushing back. Seriously word for word, as if it wasn't 10 years ago that I last heard it. It's so cool!
Amy Lee has one of the most amazing voices ever and she's gorgeous as well. I'm glad you're listening to this song and giving your take on it. Also, "Going Under" was one of the outrageously best songs of the early 2000s.
Yeah very underrated. Her singing voice but while other women singers through time were noticed for their beauty with their singing. I think she was do damn pretty, I think she had striking beautiful eyes
I love Amy's vocal clarity, she was one of the first singers when I started really paying attention to music, who didn't use a lot of vibrato and had super stable sustain. Then literally as I was typing this you specifically mentioned stability and sustain :D Her vibrato is used very specifically on individual notes and syllables, excellent control.
Highly recommend analyzing one of Evanescence’s live videos from their Synthesis tour. Amy’s voice sounded so strong and the backdrop of the orchestra was just beautiful.
And Amy's voice sounds more mature and developed. End of a dream from the Synthesis concert is a chill inducing song and helps to appreciate her journey.
Absolutely need an analysis from Synthesis with the orchestra. The End of The Dream is haunting, but honestly I don't think there's a wrong choice, they're all so good
I love Evanescence! The underwater singing scenes are just amazing in this video- especially the 15 second long shot… blows me away every time I see it. ❤🤘🏼🤘🏼
It would be awesome if she ventures into her other albums like The Open Door with songs like "Lithium" and "Your Star." Or even the comparison of Fallen album with Synthesis.
I almost guarantee Amy would join you for a Tea Time! And I would DIE FOR ONE 🤣 Also I think a breakdown/reaction of Your Star/Good Enough would be totally worth it!
Not sure if mentioned, but the album version is cleaner, without the crowd noise and some background effects that were added for the music video. Worth a listen as well
Amy Lee is a rock Goddess 'nuf said. One of my favorite songs is "My heart is broken" the vocal on this song is total 🔥. The emotion is off the scale. And the in the video she uses her whole body to express the emotion. Most people seem to have forgotten this one. But it will always be one of the best performances by Amy. Watched it many times. And still feel the same way.
It's blisteringly awesome. That song can make you go THROUGH it. I always wish there had been an MTV Crossroads (I'm showing my age there) with Amy Lee and Allison Krauss singing that song.
The belt at the near the end is insane. I've said it before those vocal cords should be gold plated. About every ten to fifteen year, you get someone who just special. Amy is one of them. Linda was one. LeAnn was another. There are a few more of course. But those 3 voices are special. You can't teach it. You just have it.
One of my favourite songs of all time, musical genius. I really like the male voice yelling as she jumps into the crowd, it sends shivers up my spine. I get totally emotional when I listen to this song, my throat catches and my eyes prick... it's just * chefs kiss *
Amy's songs were my "support" during the breakup of my abusive marriage. Her words and emotion spoke to me and for me. She and this era of Evanescence helped me see, accept, and over-come so much.
Thank you, Elizabeth for this reaction - Amy Lee's voice is divine! I think you'd enjoy their song "Lacrymosa" based on Mozart's music. Also, if you ever return to Dimash, I'll be waiting. ☺
I grew up with this song - absolutely loved it. I have never heard this 'swirling piano' before. At 17:25, I was finally able to hear it and my goodness is it beautiful.
And the fact that its the opening track of their debut album just makes it all the more daring. I absolutely was and still am obsessed with Amy's voice
I'm happy to see another Evanescence video on your channel. They are one of my favorite bands. I know there's a lot of suggestions for them but I still want to put down mine. "Sweet Sacrifice", definitely a good hitting Metal song. "Good Enough" and "Hello", both ballads but is piano focused songs with Amy Lee's incredible vocal range. I think you'd really love them. And "Everybody's Fool", the music video really makes a difference with this song. I think it's something many of us should watch when it comes to the expectations of celebrities and the insecurities they go through personally. 💖😎👍
So hyped for this and returning back to Evanescence!!! The craziest thing about all these songs is that not only is Amy's voice amazing but this song is the perfect example of Amy's songwriting talent, as she is the primary songwriter of all of her music. Going Under, Imaginary, and Tourniquet will always be my favorite songs from Fallen. They exemplify Evanescence's sound and Amy's voice perfectly. Hopefully Elizabeth checks out some songs from the Open Door too 🤘
The more "metal" songs had a lot of songwriting influence from Ben too! That's why this dropped out on later albums. And Tourniquet (probably my fav song from Fallen) even has writing credits from their drummer at that time Rocky.
Back in 2003 when Evanescence was touring for "The Fallen" album, the Charlotte, NC date had to be rescheduled due to Amy falling ill. At the makeup show, she said she got really sick from doing the underwater scenes for the "Going Under" video. The band did a KILLER cover of "Zero" by the Smashing Pumpkins and Amy sat on the edge of the stage while playing a keyboard to have the whole crowd embarrass her bandmate by singing happy birthday to him. Her voice was just as good in person as it was on the album. Also, the video has a lot of extra crowd sounds in it that are not present in the album version. The guitar solo was heavily drowned out by them. I recall guitarist Ben Moody's tone was harshly criticized at the time due to him using what were considered low quality Line6 amps. Considering "The Fallen" was the sixth best selling album of the 21st century, I think the band made out just fine.
Ben always had a good eye for what made things commercially successful - never quite liked their other stuff as much after he left. Shame he has all his other negative traits...
@@RyanEglitisEverything that made Fallen and Evanescence successful was because of Amy. Even My Immortal, "Ben's Song" was bound for the scrapheap before Amy pulled it out, changed some lyrics, and wrote the bridge for it. Ben needed to leave because if he stayed Evanescence wouldn't exist. He went on to write songs like Because of You by Kelly Clarkson. Ben leaving was the best possible thing for the band.
@@notyouraveragesouthernmama Amy definitely had the voice and a lot of the artistic flair. Ben reined that in and focused it towards what would be popular (along with their first record company). Yes, writing for pop stars kind of proves that point - it's in the name POP(ular). The results speak for themselves - Fallen and Origin are amazing throughout, the subsequent ones are merely good (with great singing). I also know he had to leave because of toxic interpersonal stuff, but barring that (not possible, I know), I think they were better musically with him. Saying all that, it's clear he needed a ton of the things Amy brought to the table, because while good, We Are the Fallen is in the opposite boat as Evanesence. They have the hooks, but can't quite deliver on the flair and singing chops of a truly top tier band.
Ok. I've been listening to Evanesence of and on for 25 some odd years. Your analysis here has lead me to hear things in the music that I haven't noticed in all those years. It's giving me a new appreciation for the song as a whole and I will never hear it the same, superficial way again. Thank you for that. For giving me even more reason to love Evanesence as a whole and this song in particular.
@@Whiskey11GamingI've never heard anything about being an opera singer or being a classically trained vocalist, but she is a classically trained pianist.
The piano hits in there really reminded me of "Call me Little Sunshine" by Ghost. Love how in both tracks those really add to the uneasy feeling you get from them.
Listening to her voice live and it staying at that intensity the entire set is mesmerizing. Saw her at a festival with a few different stages and she just makes people stop to listen...very powerful voice.
It's nice that Elizabeth spoke about the beautiful contrast between low and heavy guitars and a high pure sounding female vocal. It's something I really like, because it works so well.
Evanescence was, by far, the most influential band for my musical tastes. Before Tarja, Floor, Sharon, etc., there was Amy Lee. Evanescence still sounds amazing and their older music holds up incredibly well.
You should listen to the acoustic live version of this song 😍😍😍 So much more crunchy lows and powerful high without all the background distraction. She NAILS IT. ❤
If you do more Evanescence, I would highly recommend "My Last Breath". It's one of my favourite songs by them for an especially great moment that I feel compelled to sing along with even though I can barely hit the notes.
I think she's my favorite voice of all time. Any time Amy Lee starts singing, I'm lost in the song. No work will be getting done in those few minutes, time to zone out. "Haunted" is the perfect word, that's exactly it.
Amy Lee is an absolute LEGEND of the 2000's. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing her voice. It's so unique and piercing and haunting that you can't confuse her with anyone else. I used to think that her vocals were highly studio altered until I had the opportunity to meet her during a concert in Indianapolis while she was warming up. I can vouch that absolutely that is EXACTLY what she sounds like live. There is no strain or wobble in her voice AT ALL. She can easily shatter glass - did it as a party trick during the meet & greet on her first go. Crazy talented.
Her voice was autotuned on Fallen because the label insisted on it. So she sang her heart out on The Open Door to prove that is was completely unnecessary
Many performers (musical and otherwise) talk about getting "in the zone." When you see a guitarist who seems like they're in a trance, when you see a dancer who seems like they're completely lost, and both of them are always pulling off an absolutely killer performance, that's it. Amy Lee routinely acts and sounds like she's there. That's correctly known as a "flow state." Hungarian research Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is best-known for researching this, in-depth. Other people seek this state as well. As a developer (programmer), I can get into a flow state while working on code (frequently requires some fast / loud music, a certain amount of caffeine and avoiding certain technologies) and ...geez, where did the day go? But man ... I got SO MUCH done today.
Awesome! I suggested Evanescence a few days ago, and here they are. Thank youuu!❤If you’d hear more, “Tourniquet” is next. Or “Everybody’s Fool”. It’s a pleasure watching your reaction and listening to your insights. You always draw my attention to something new on a song I’ve heard countless times - like those piano notes! - and that is very precious to me.
Amy Lee has one of the greatest and yet underappreciated voices of all time. I've loved it since I first heard it back in 2003, and I still love it today. Nobody's voice pulls at my emotions like hers does.
Hear me out. Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) , In This River LIVE in Paris (2006). What an incredible performance with a heart-wrenching story behind it. Even if not for a video, but just your own personal enjoyment.
"My Last Breath" is an Evanescence song that I don't think gets enough love. Almost no reactions to it. It may not feature Amy's full range, but the mix of electronica and metal with soaring violins is unique!
Would love to hear what you think about Esoterica. I can't think of a bad song, or the best to suggest. However Firefly is an incredible song and Tobias' vocals are absolutely stunning. The video is awesome as well. The whole thing just makes you feel!
Loveeee Amylee, she may have even been one of the first artists I really listened to when I was old enough to listen to my own music. I'm still in love with everything she does. You should listen to Sweet sacrafise. She does some amazing vocals in that one too.
I love your reactions! I just saw an old interview a few weeks ago and saw that Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale are really good friends. Amy even sang with Halestorm on Break In, it's a great song! Those two ladies are soooo amazing! I never thought I'd like any female vocalist more than Ann Wilson or Bonnie Tyler and Stevie Nick's, but my goodness, I was wrong! They all have so many special things about their voices and are just insanely talented. Another awesome song and review! I love how you truly listen and pick up on everything! It's hard not to smile watching along, and i love that you stop and explain whats going on and rewind so we can all hear everything that makes these vocalists so special! ❤
@@Ghost-in-the-snow thank you! I'll definitely have to check that out! I just found her page about a month ago so I've got a bit of catching up to do. 🙂
When you mentioned the loneliness of being on the road/touring, it instantly made me think of two other great tracks about that very subject, and coincidentally both from extremely talented artists you absolutely have to check out! ‘Faithfully’ - Journey ‘All The Roadrunning’ - (Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits) and Emmylou Harris
“Fallen” in its entirety needs a vocal analysis. Still an amazing album after 20 years.
The album takes me back to a great time in my life. I was 20yrs old when this came out... now 40, with a family and a business to run.

That live album that came out a couple years later is awesome too. She sings Korns Thoughtless which incredible.
Yes the album as a whole awesome
Another vote for Lithium! An absolutely amazing vocal performance
You would definitely enjoy "Lithium"
My absolute favourite and what I think is her most haunting song
Definitely one of their best songs, would be so cool to see a reaction!
I wanna see her do a video on Evanescence song Hello as well.
Yes! This! Lithium should be analyzed soon!
Yes Lithium please! Beautiful song, beautiful vocals and the harmonies are stunning.
I still think “Hello” is one of their most under rated songs. Her range in that one is insane!
exactly, Hello is haunting yet so beautiful💙
Dedinitely, probably my in my top 3 evanescence songs.
Hello is gut-wrenchingly beautiful.
Can never understand how this doesn't get recommended more! SO so so underrated it's crazy

Leaving the obligatory seether/Amy Lee journey that is "broken". Truly phenomenal song
Take 50,000 upvotes for this comment. there needs to be an analysis of this!
Well that song is by seether featuring Amy Lee live(Pepsi smash) 2004 I think! Great song all and all!
Absolutely, their voices go together so well on that song. One of my favorite duets ever.
The song is by the band Seether. She was dating the lead singer (Shaun Morgan Welgemoed). They then had a messy break up. "Fake It" is the song he wrote about her, and "Call me when you're Sober" is the song she wrote about him :)
yes!! It will be the best way for her to get introduced to seether and then she will want to check out more of their songs !!!!

They really did her well with the video
Everybody’s Fool is amazing in terms of the messaging, Sweet Sacrifice and Lacrymosa are just 🤯 the singing from Amy in those is just amaze balls.
“Imaginary” always struck the deepest chord for me, personally.
Of all of her songs, "My Heart is Broken" I think really embraces her voice with the piano. I love that song so much because of her singing it. Her voice is amazing.
That song is a total out of body experience 🤩
Also, lost in paradise!
That one feels like she is ripping my heart out of my body, such poignant pain she expresses. Gives me chills and tears at the same time.

I highly recommend "Hello" or "Good Enough" she absolutely floors me with those 2. It's crystalline and ethereal.
If we're going down the Evanescence rabbit hole I would love to see an analysis of "Call Me When You're Sober."
And lithium
Its the laugh at the end that kills me every time.
Definitely would like to hear her thoughts on this one

Oh, yes!!! Her work in Sweet Sacrifice is amazing!
In the music video of Sweet Sacrifice @ 42 secs she does a Siren's Call. She hits the high and melancholy notes and holds it.
Yep. I recommend that one as often as possible.
I took noticed that those were also song titles.
I was giggling at all the unintentional song titles lol
I love the way Amy's bell-like tone both floats above and pierces through the instruments. Wonderful production, IMO.
You could do a deep dive on every song on this album. Even songs that never made the radio like "Hello" or "Imaginary" are just audio smorgasbords.
The “Fallen” Album is one of my favorite albums of all time. So much that I bought it on vinyl twice.

Yes this comment right here!
THIS
Authorities! THIS ONE, RIGHT HERE!!!
Agreed.
Amazing video as well!
And the fact that its the opening track of their debut album just makes it all the more daring. I absolutely was and still am obsessed with Amy's voice
Evanescence's Fallen album, this song is the 1st track on it, was my 1st CD that i own. I love Amy Lee and how she changed the rock world. 🤘
@@Hipp0campus_1Actually, Tourniquet was a cover of "My Tourniquet" from Rocky's other band, Soul Embraced.
@@KateLacrymosaWith melody and lyrical changes by Lee, but yes
She did a tour with these songs sung classically. It was such a good idea and fits with her voice perfectly
Probably because she was a classically trained opera singer before creating Evanescence. :)
@@Whiskey11GamingI've never heard anything about being an opera singer or being a classically trained vocalist, but she is a classically trained pianist.
I loved this song back in the day! Amy has such a beautiful voice. ❤️
The piano hits in there really reminded me of "Call me Little Sunshine" by Ghost. Love how in both tracks those really add to the uneasy feeling you get from them.
Such a banger
Listening to her voice live and it staying at that intensity the entire set is mesmerizing. Saw her at a festival with a few different stages and she just makes people stop to listen...very powerful voice.
Izzy Hale and Amy Lee: BREAK IN. is a must ❤
Her voice is haunting ❤ Absolutely love her!
Ms. Lee is amazing. She sounds like rock n roll to the core. Goose bumps and head bobbing are guaranteed results of this amazing talent.
It's nice that Elizabeth spoke about the beautiful contrast between low and heavy guitars and a high pure sounding female vocal. It's something I really like, because it works so well.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR MORE AMY LEE THANK YOU
This whole album had so many awesome vocal and lyrical songs, really brings me back. Epic. Glad you finally found the songs.
One of my favourite female voices 💜🔥💜
Going Under
Timeless classic 🔥🤘🔥
Evanescence was, by far, the most influential band for my musical tastes. Before Tarja, Floor, Sharon, etc., there was Amy Lee. Evanescence still sounds amazing and their older music holds up incredibly well.
and after round about 20 years, i still get goosebumps by hearing this song!
You should listen to the acoustic live version of this song 😍😍😍 So much more crunchy lows and powerful high without all the background distraction. She NAILS IT. ❤
Amy’s voice is absolutely beautiful and incredibly powerful! Always sends chills down my spine when I hear her sing. Phenomenal talent!
Can't listen to this song without crying like a baby,
remembering someone that is no more that loved it so much...
Thanks for this, really
If you do more Evanescence, I would highly recommend "My Last Breath". It's one of my favourite songs by them for an especially great moment that I feel compelled to sing along with even though I can barely hit the notes.
I think Amy is the best female vocalist out there.. love to hear her sing anything
I think she's my favorite voice of all time. Any time Amy Lee starts singing, I'm lost in the song. No work will be getting done in those few minutes, time to zone out. "Haunted" is the perfect word, that's exactly it.
You should listen to their songs "Imaginary" and "Hello" - ,the second shows a totally different side of them still being them. I love it.
Amy’s voice always sends chills down my spine!
I never heard the piano in the background......and I have listened to this song FAR too many times. Elizabeth still amazes me. 😂😂😂💜💜💜
I love this song and Amy Lee's incredible voice
Love this analysis! Amy is amazing with the perfect mix of classical vocal technique with rock angst and power!
Sick! Love this and the voice! I would recommend listening to Esoterica and their new song Firefly. Would love to hear your review! 🤘🏻🎸❤️🧚🏼
I know nothing about the technicalities of music or singing but I absolutely love hearing you break down songs!
I think Elizabeth has done a reaction to Break In.
@@Ghost-in-the-snow thank you! I'll definitely have to check that out! I just found her page about a month ago so I've got a bit of catching up to do. 🙂
I don't know many evanescence songs, but this one's my fave!!! What an incredible voice 🎸🎶🤘❤️🎸🎶🤘❤️
This Band has always been Super Sophisticated! Always "High End" quality. Many thanx 👍👍
When you mentioned the loneliness of being on the road/touring, it instantly made me think of two other great tracks about that very subject, and coincidentally both from extremely talented artists you absolutely have to check out!
‘Faithfully’ - Journey
‘All The Roadrunning’ - (Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits) and Emmylou Harris
I think you’d really enjoy Amy Lee and Lindsey Stirling doing Wasted On You. Thanks for another wonderful video!
My favourite version. So beautiful and Elizabeth would love it for sure.
