The guy who died testing was Ken Miles, the guy being played by Bale in the upcoming film
Also, the accident occurred during testing at Willow Springs.
Ken died at Riverside raceway just down the road from me, i have been told the story of how it happened when i met a couple of his friends at the monterey historics, a tragedy that should not have happened...RIP Ken.
What a guy, sad that he got cheated out of the triple crown for racing.
I heard the transmission he was testing out in the J-Car seized.

6:38 That's Ken Miles you're thinking of Jimmy, he was killed at Riverside in 1967 testing the GT40 J-car. (Which eventually became the Mk. IV) Ken Miles is also in the Le Mans '66 film coming out in November, where he's played by Christian Bale.
1. I went to Le Mans in '80, '81 and '85. It rained in '80 and '81 but I never saw lightning.
2. If it's available I would love to see you run a Bob Tullius Group 44 Jaguar IMSA GTP on this circuit as was run in 1985. I remember lying in my tent in the campground near the Mulsanne Straight and listening to the Jags flying down the straight and I always wondered what it would be like to be in that car. It was a glorious sound for a gear head.

There's a part in the 24 Hour War documentary with Dan Gurney talking about how he had to use the "chicken shit way of braking" by using the engine braking in the MkIV at the end of the straight.
Logan Palmer wasn’t it also to save the brakes from the extreme tempature a since the ford was one of the heavier cars?

S.Vishnu Vardhan in fact beebe actually took that decision but the officials only told him on the last lap that mclaren would actually win (the plan was to make ken miles win) and without radio at the time it was only too late when the team could warn him.
And btw ken miles ran the 1965 Le Mans but retired after 45 minutes because of gearbox issues.

My favourite scene in ford v Ferarri movie is the Daytona race. Though not very accurate but the cinematography, the intensity & the music made me watch it again n again. Every scene in that movie is awesome.

The only thing I don't like is that the documentary completely glossed over the fact that Ford didn't design the MkI and MkII. It's cool hearing Dan Gurney talk about the MkIV though.

I did a similar race a few months back with one of my friends as in the 1967 Ford MKIV.
We did a 1 hour stint each with time progression on so that the two hours was like a full 24 hour cycle and we set it to rain at some point. It was one of the best sim races I've ever done as I had to drive for most of my stint at night in pouring rain. We won but it was scary and so much fun.
Honestly, it almost felt like I was there at Le Mans, its was so realistic.
If you have PC2, try a historic race at Le Mans or any of the other classic tracks with time progression on - you wont regret it.
24 hour race at Bathurst is also glorious as the sunsets and sunrises over the mountain are beautiful.

This is my favourite cars in sim racing, pure driving and skill
It's a famous moment in racing history but not really a 'great' one. I mean Ford only tried for a few years and once they did win a race, Ford left the sport again. The Porsche Vs Ferrari clash in 1970s LeMans with the 512s and 917s is INFINITELY better. I hope they get it right in the movie, considering the Mk1 & Mk2 GT40s are entirely designed and built in the UK by Lola.
The reason you lost to some of the Ferraris is because the Ford Mk IV is in the Vintage Prototype B class, while the Ferraris that beat you were Ferrari 512s in the Vintage Prototype A class (they’re newer). Exceptional drive, just didn’t have the fastest car!

Hahaha....PCars2 sure is good for racing in the evening/night with a huge storm raging mate......Did all of the above in the 917 in similar conditions...10/10. Hopefully they show in that movie about just how bad the gt40 was before it got sorted by Frank Gardiner.....there is usually a bunch of really important history missing in those movies....

Ferrari all day!! I like the actors who are going to make the film, but I already know that the film is going to suck, for sure they will put the Ferrari as vilan and the Americans as the good guys, as they do in all the movies !! And what they never talk about, is that the championship that is really what matters, the Americans have not won, Le Mans is just one of the tracks!
Not Ford that class sure but in modern gt classes Corvette has won quite a few championships cant remember how strong viper was in the regulations but Americans have one there. Now Porsche is still one of the most dominate teams in endurance tho.
Awesome video showing what makes the cars of this era so incredible and brutal to drive. pc2's ability to convey the feeling is unmatched. With the right ffb settings, good surround sound and a buttkicker or good subwoofer placement it definitely fools your brain. I've even got that feeling in your stomach coming over hills in a real car at times and it really puts a smile on your face. You need a nice wireless keyboard to button box mod mounted for when you have the vr headset, really adds to the experience and set up well you memorize where to reach pretty quickly.
The weather looked really insane, great video! Can't imagine what it's like in VR!

gt40 only gets to about 200 when you get close to the kink. always disappoints me that you cant get the real experience of le mans in 66-69. dont understand why they put the Ferrari in vintage a but not the for and why the 71 porches 917/03 is in the same class and the gt40.

how does pc2 compare with acc? which one is better for a beginner with a g29?
PC2 has better performance, car and track variety, career mode, and VR. They're on par with each other visually. Assetto Corsa Competizione is only GT3 cars and only a handful of tracks, the career mode is ass, and VR might as well be nonexistent, it's so bad. However the physics, sound, and FFB of ACC are great. If you REALLY like GT3 and are racing on a single monitor, get ACC, otherwise, original AC or PC2 all the way.

Ken milles died testing it
Looking at the comments I don't think any body has mentioned the engines in the GT40. Eventually they were seven litre iron block V8s which had already been developed for Nascar. For the GT40 having, to run for longer, they detuned them slightly by using smaller valves in the head.
Ford proved the engines were good by running them on dynos for 24 hours simulating their operation at LeMans.
The GT40 lacked the finesse shall we say of the Ferraris especially which were pure thoroughbred racing machines, it was their comparitively immense power that made the GT40 competitive.

For all the shit PC2 gets, nothing can top its weather system. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE how many times it throws inclement weather at you in the career scenarios and all the "HAHA EAT A PUDDLE, LOSER" moments in any inclement race but it does give a sense of dread and realism you can't find elsewhere.

Hey guys quick question. How do you rate the FFB in this game? I feel like I cannot get a good feeling for it in this game (I have a T300 RS) It feels great in the F1 games and basically any codemasters game, yet in Assetto Corsa and Project cars 2 it doesn't feel that good. Any recommended settings I should try, or is it just bad?
Thing is, that's a 917 behind you. In reality, you would not have seen where it went in a straight line. GT40 was utterly outclassed by the 917 and 512....though it does seem to be running without its back end....and further watching suggests it was a 908 so fair. As you were :)

The content in pCars2 is fantastic. The best in sim racing pretty much. It’s really to bad everything else sucks. It’s also to bad they stopped supporting it in less then a year after launch. It still needs lots of polish and bug fixes.
PC2- such a potential wasted by developers vision of simulating manual gearbox shifting time (you can't shif with a H shifter like in AC as quick as you can, in old cars you must shift slow, hold clutch long etc... ). And the force feedback, even with mods it's night and day to the other's titles.
Kick ass. Wish they had a DLC for the original Grand Sport Corvettes. They only built a few and were testing everything a new azz until GM pulled the plug. Shame
The driver that died was Ken Miles, the poor Ken, who was betrayed by his team. He died due to a lack of foreseeing by Ford’s engineers. Basically the first tests they did with this version of the car (the ford J 40, actually) showed that the rear hood, covering the engine, lifted by Bernoulli effect while at top speed (200mph or 320kph). They added a couple aluminum plates to keep it down but due to weight and price restrictions, they didn’t secure them enough for the G-forces and tensions the car had, and they broke in the last couple kilometers of the tests Miles was doing, so the hood lifted and he couldn’t control the car. It just spun at top speed, resulting in instant death.
The name of the man who was killed was Ken Miles, and because of that crash, the GT40 MKIV was fitted with a roll cage and cages were almost required from that moment forward. The earlier MKI and MKII racing GT40s did not have roll cages to save weight. So there is your little tidbit of history
Driver was Ken Miles. The car at the time had a honeycomb frame which was supposed to keep the car light and rigid but it didn't save him. This is why the MkIV in PC2 is so much heavier than anything of the time; because after that accident they added a heavy rollcage (which actually saved Mario Andretti's life in Le Mans)

This game really is pretty. I just wish the driving physics were that little bit more real, if the physics from RF2 or AC were swapped to this game, this would be the No.1 sim
What difficulty do you put the AI to? Cause I can never find the right difficulty. The AI is either super slow and end up being pretty bad back markers, ooor they are way too quick through corners like their cars are glued to the ground.
Ken Miles was the Test Driver Jimmy he should have been the first driver to win Daytona Sebring and Le Mans but Hendry Ford wanted a publicity photo and a famous driver to take home the win for Ford in 66 and he lost out on some weird technicality to McLaren and Amon
