    I think your real secret is enjoying the simple things in life: love of a partner, rejection of materialism, joys of travel...appreciation of wine and beer!! If only more people could be like you what a wonderful world it would be...there's a song in that somewhere.
    More videos on finance and lifestyle please!!

      I can contribute with a few tips. Most travelagents are way over the limit on prices for living on the Algarve.
      I was earlier before my private renting, using a Travel agent stationed in England and Ireland. Alpharooms.com
      Their are two great benifits. You can either pay in british pounds or Euro.
      You can book by the week, month or longer periods. Cheaper prices as the summerseason is passed.
      When it comes to payments etc. living abroad there is always a hazzle with exchange rates etc.
      Here is an Early Christmas tip that will revolutionize your expensis for ever.
      Get the Visa Cashcard from REVOLUT. With this card you can exchange money to an from any currancy - with almost Bank rates. You have an app in your phone were you do all settings live. Currency to use, transactions to other Revolut card holders.
      With the highest Revolut card Metal you have access to all lounges at airports. Delays etc. no problem!
      Enjoy!

    I to retired early at 58. Also sold my house and move to a condo they cut my expenses so low. I to I didn't know I was on fire now that I heard you guys talk about it you just younger ones. And I did retired in 2020 in the middle of all this covid-19 mess. I do do some side Hustle but three days a week part-time 12 to 15 hours to have some extra cash and like I really need it. I think more people should do that it's more relaxing less stressful I also think they'll probably expand lifespan and live a healthier life.

    I love watching your channel. I started watching last year, because of your trips to Portugal. I was born in Portugal and came to Massachusetts when I was 2 years old, with my family. I returned to Portugal when I was 23 and not again till last July, with one of my sons and daughter-in-law. I'm hoping to return again, maybe next year, if it's safe to travel. My son and daughter-in-law enjoyed seeing were I was born and loved the sites and culture. I didn't realize how attached I became to Portugal and that I missed so much in not traveling, to see my homeland, more often. My brother has been several times. Anyway, your trips have given me my Portugal fix. I also enjoyed your other excursions and your talks during the quarantine period. Very informative and entertaining. Thank you

    I'm really enjoying your videos, Tina & Norm, which are thought provoking and calming. No car and no mobile phone - good for you! I lived in China for 6 years without a car. I'm now in Thailand with another 6 years under my belt. My girlfriend, lived with me in Bangkok for a year and sold her car.
    She travelled to/from work by BTS Skytrain. In early 2021 we moved to her apartment in a different part of Bangkok and so she bought a car - for convenience. 12 years without a car was my humble attempt to re-balance all the miles I drove, in the UK, as a Sales Manager. I prefer to walk.
    Best wishes, from Bangkok.

    I am loving your videos. I have been home sick binge watching them all day. I am 50 and my husband is 62. I have known that I wanted to retire at 55 but ended up getting divorced at 40 with four teenagers to raise, which made it a challenge and my now husband didn’t know much about retirement planning when we met. We have gotten ourselves on track and built up quite a net worth in nine years following FIRE principals. We’re a few years away from retirement for him and partial for me. Your videos make me feel encouraged and more secure about it. Thank you so much.

    WE also as the Portuguese thank you for making all of us intrerested in this BEAUTIFUL country with its just as beautiful and friendly people.
    For me your videos gave me totally new perspectives on life as retired. In my youth before settling for parenthood I travelled to US and worked with custom combining for 2 years from mid USA all the way to Canada. So after all that I thought I had have with travelling. But then you two came on my path. I fell like a tree for your Portugal videos. I emediately booked a trip and visited Portugal for 2 weeks in May last year and made up my mind. Here is were I want to spend the rest of my years to come. Moved to Portugal in October 2019.
    Now living in Alvor. I was lucky to find a brand new apartment to rent after renting at a hotel in a Pria da Rocha. Where prices tend to rise reaching enormuos heights during summer season.
    Alvor is perfect. Calm during winter, spring and fall. THANK YOU!! Norm and Tina!

      That is a nice story to share thank you Bo, Alvor is a very nice place, our friends have been going there for two years in the winter. We have been there twice and had a good walk each time. The winters must be a lot better for you than in Sweden. It's looking doubtful to us for a trip this winter to Portugal, the U.S. Canada land border is still closed and will be up to the end of August, but they keep extending it. We don't wish to sit in a plane on a seven hour flight wearing face masks 😷. We are both glad you have a nice new apartment in Alvor. We are working on a new Portugal video. We are on fire too 🤣🤣 I retired last September just before my 58th birthday and Sue finished two months ago in May and she is a little younger than me 😉 So we have to make our saving last until the UK pensions pay us aged 67 here. It’s a lifestyle that we have worked for over the last 40 years and we have been together since 1978. I think it’s time for change 👍🏻😉🚐 Enjoyed your story, as it gives us confidence that we are not alone. Have fun and keep those Vlogs coming 🥰 Trev & Sue

      @ThisIsOurRetirement  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are lucky that Canada and the U.S. can draw the state pension early if you want to at 60, so we both did that. I’m due to get a UK pension to if I get to 67, Tina will be the last age group in Canada to get the other Canadian pension at 65, they raised it to 67. In total there are three state pensions in Canada. Great to hear you are burning away on Fire, congratulations. Both of you keep well and safe.

  • @Grayce47

    Thanks for doing this video. Very nice to get another Canadian's perspective.
    We didn't hear about F.I.R.E until a few years ago. We have always paid into our pension and bought RRSPs, we just called it saving for retirement :-) F.I.R.E is a lot more catchy. We are 5 years away from our planned retirement date.
    We aren't planning to sell our house. Instead we had a contractor build a legal apartment in our basement. Now the income from the apartment more than covers our taxes,utilities and insurance (no mortgage anymore). We built the apartment with the thought that we will probably live in it someday and rent out the main part of the house. This would provide more income and we could feel free to leave the apartment for longer periods, to travel, while someone else is living in the main part of the house. Of course we have also thought about selling everything and moving down east, Ontario is so expensive!

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for dropping by we also have RRSPs, sounds like you have a great plan to look forward to in 5 years. For us when we looked at early retirement we considered our health as we wanted to travel rather than waiting as you never know what might happen. Yes Ontario is expensive and we hear lots of people sell up and go out East , for us the Winters ⛄️❄️there would be too hard .
      There are a lot of smaller towns where the cost of living is a lot Lower as we have found . Hope you have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🍺😎

      Unfortunately, the affordable care act is anything but affordable. It is more like bankruptcy protection. I was on it for years. It cost me over $1000 per month (unsubsidized) and didn't cover virtually anything. The only individuals that it truly helps are those that qualify for expanded Medicade and live in a state that has accepted those benefits from the federal government. Mine hasn't.

    Hey Tina and Norm!! So great to see you both, and Tina your hair looks too adorable! We get it girl.. when it comes to not getting your hair done for a year.. it feels amazing when you finally do! Loved hearing your topic on F.I.R.E. and being able to retire early. Too cool that you were both able to retire before 60.. that's pretty much unheard of here in the USA, funny enough Butters parents both retired before 60 as well (they're Canadian). Here a lot of people are working into their late 70s before they can even retire. $2100/month is not bad for your life expenses. Ours is over double that, but then again.. living in Los Angeles, and our rent alone is $2500/month. Plus utilities and everything else that's included with a household.. cars, insurance, food and etc. Interesting to hear you both don't have cell phones, but you enjoy the magic jack. We have heard of it, but haven't used it before. We were wondering, what if you are flying to another part of the world and your kids want to get ahold of you and you don't have a cell phone? They have to wait til you log into the computer and email them? We can imagine if we got rid of our cell phones, our families would flip out that they couldn't get a hold of us LOLOLOL. That is amazing to hear that Norm became a professional photographer and now you guys can live off that income and not have to work regular 9-5 jobs. We hope we are like you guys someday in the way you get to travel and truly enjoy your life, and still have a nice view of the lake!! We hope Norm gets out and goes fishing! Great video and love you guys to the moon!!

      Hi Bears and Butters , TFW wow 🤩your expenses are really high in Los Angeles you need to move to Canada 🇨🇦 LOL 😂 🤣. Sounds like Butters parents were on FIRE 🔥 too. When we are travelling and arrive at an airport the first thing we do is contact our grown up Kids as airports always have WiFi, so it’s never been a problem. All places we stay have Internet, we FaceTime and call back home to Canada 🇨🇦 free on Majic Jack.
      Yes we have heard in The USA people still working in their 70s that’s very 😢 sad as by then a lot have health issues and don’t get to enjoy their retirement.
      Hope you are both staying safe as we see the Coronavirus numbers really high with you 😱keep well and enjoy life Hugs Norm and Tina 🤗 Thanks for liking my hair I love the highlights 😍Cheers 👍🍷🍺

    Congrats on being F.I.R.E. It's awesome to hear that you have a side hustle that pays all your expenses. Most people on F.I.R.E rely on their million dollar stock portfolio for income. They use the infamous 4% rule (withdrawing 4% of their portfolio to live on). With recent extreme market volatility, it would be gut wrenching to see it drop 30% in March, only to see it come roaring back. Having to sell securities for income in a down market(s) is detrimental.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We always felt our house would provide our income in retirement by selling it but the royalties from photography built up over the years and being a little more frugal makes ends meet. The stock market gives and takes, the opportunity for us was buying quality stocks cheaper as we had cash available. We love being able to find new ideas on the Internet and F.I.R.E has been interesting to read about. Thanks for watching we appreciate it.

    Never heard of FIRE until few years back on youtube, facebook etc. Knew I didn't like working in a corporate jungle (actually hated it), but chose the slow property investing path, got a bit of result but tied me more to the job as I needed the paychecks to keeping the properties, it was the superannuation (share) that freed me having to work early 50s, & the shares cost my lifestyle very little with zero stress.

    Great video.... we woke up about 4 years ago and I want to retire at 60 and like you step off the wheel. We have a small camper van and want to travel occasionally in the year. I think like many in the Uk here we may put into pensions and just assume it will work out. Reality was it wasn’t working hard enough and I needed more to be put away. So with some adjustment we can make the 60 real. I know in your later video you mention putting money at source away and that is the golden egg I would gift young ppl. Also one question selling the house concept is interesting one - do you have any concerns in not having an inheritance legacy but understand your live for today

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment, the inheritance legacy is interesting, it could almost be the same concept as buying a house or renting a house. We were sure our family home if left to our children would be a burden to them to prepare for sale and they have their own homes and wouldn’t want to live in our house that we sold. We are sure there will be cash left as our inheritance gift. Don’t underestimate as you age the desire to buy stuff has diminished for us, we prefer the experience instead. Also government pensions and assistance add up remarkably, more than we thought. At 65 we will only pay $100 in total per year for all prescriptions, drugs and dispensing fees.

    I found this video so interesting to watch, and a lot of what you said i could relate to myself.. i think the budget you have to live on monthly is quite a large one, a lot larger than the one i allow myself in the Philippines, but i would say to live in the Philippines it is so much more cheaper than where you live, but the comparisons are there for sure.. I am too young to retire myself, but i earn my money in the UK from renting out rooms, which keeps me and my little family in the Philippines, but one day i may sell up and then live a much better quality of life in the Philippines than i currently do, eg better location and home, and i guess i am in quite a good position really to do that as i am already mortgage free and own my property/business outright, but it's still a big risk to take.. You are so right in what you say, if one wants a better quality of life no matter where you are it will cost that bit more.. Anyway keep up the good work here, a really good video... Carl

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Carl great comment hoping that you and your family are all well, yes there are differences between UK , Canada and Philippines but choices can be similar in all three places ie moving to a cheaper place to save money or get a nicer place for the same money .

    It is funny, isn't it - some people for decades / centuries have been living within their means to have choices later in life. Charles Dickens had Mr Macawber advise David Copperfield to do so. His views probably formed by seeing his own father in a debtors prison. I was interested to hear that you rent your home. I decided to retire with a home I own, so had less to invest. I felt more secure. Could you have managed buying an apartment, eliminating rent, but with a reduced income from smaller investments?

Although we feel still quite young, we are planning - as much as you can - for our retirement. We recently sold our large house and downsized to a 3 bed bungalow. Best decision ever! We married when we were very young and at that age we for some reason thought we would have life after children, while other friends were single into their twenties were married with a mortgage. We left our jobs because they stopped being “fun”, maybe because we were getting older or the economy was getting meaner lol. Yes we are from the U.K. and emigrated to Canada in 1992. That gave us a great motivation to start over and live debt free and pay our house off quickly. Thanks so much for watching and participating in our video with a great comment. If you want to get an less expensive cell phone, without the contracts and big bills, you can get a Tracfone with a $15.00 month plan for unlimited minutes, 1GB of data, which I have and I'm retired. They cost $35.99 to $39.99 for one of their smartphones at Target or Walmart stores. It's great, although I'm not a huge cell phone user myself, but its good to have in case of an emergency, especially since you have a car now.

We've been following the FI movement for many years now. Check out the podcast ChooseFI. They do a great job explaining and talking FI. Keep up the good work on your videos!

    Thanks for another enjoyable video. Would love to see a video of how you saved up and invested for retirement and also about how you make some money on the side with your photography. Hopefully your TH-cam channel will also become a reliable side hustle for you both. Do you put your photos that you sell up on a website, work for someone or how does this work?

      @@shaneadams5965 Hi we hear you on that , we used to live in Ottawa which was very expensive for everything. We then took the decision to move to a small town in South West Ontario sold our house and now rent a great two bedroom appartment overlooking a lake , everything is way cheaper even my hairdressing a third of the cost LOL 😂😂.
      There are lots of places within an hour of Burlington where your cost would be way lower should you decide to turn the page and have a new chapter in your life .We wish you well and have a great week Cheers 🍷👍🍺🌺

    Hi Norm & Tina! I so enjoy your videos. I started watching the ones you had in Portugal as my husband & I are wanting to retire there. Your videos are so informative and so fun to watch! We are trying to sell our house now but with the covid 19 virus it has put things on hold. So do you all split your time between traveling and your home base in Canada?
    I'm thinking until I know what it is like to stay in Portugal, I would do the same ...split our time.
    I hope you both stay safe! Keep the videos coming!!! :)

      Hi Ruth, thank for such a wonderful comment and thank you for watching our videos. Yes we have a permanent home in Ontario Canada an apartment we rent and this is home for us. We travel a lot, we will go to Portugal for a month or two months in winter depending on other trips we have planned. As we age we are concerned about health and maintaining our eligibility for the Ontario Health Plan it is important to us so we do at least spend five months of the year in Ontario. It must be difficult selling a home at the moment but we do see houses selling consistently in our town if they are priced accurately for the market. We wish you every success in what you dream to do. Have a great weekend.

      @@ThisIsOurRetirement Thanks for your great reply. My husband & I are wanting to do the same, renting an apartment after selling our house. We are ready to travel as you both do. I understand about the health insurance issues. We are concerned with the same issues, and we are really considering moving to Portugal, if all goes as planned. I do have 2 sons here, but they are grown and no grand kids yet. So I feel like until that happens, we need to do what is best for our situation. We want to make the most of our retirement, and unfortunately, the US is not the best answer.
      Keep making those videos!!! Have a great day!! Ruth
