- When the cost of everything is spiralling, from housing to fuel and food, millions of ordinary people are facing an ever greater struggle to get by.
Now a new report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation says millions of people in the UK would need to double their income to escape poverty.
Their damning report reveals the extent of hardship and desperation across the country - describing it as "social failure, at scale".

Philip McCann's study (economist professor at the University of Sheffield) shows that half the country today is poorer than the poorest state in Mississippi and West-Virginia and has a quality of life which is about the same as Tennessee or Alabama.
Poverty is subjective. People 50 years ago would laugh at the notion of poverty today.

There once was as a time when the husband went to work Monday to Friday 40 hours per week, the wife took care of the home and children. While not living beyond their means and putting money aside, they could Afford to live comfortably, have a holiday once a year and maybe even have savings. All on a 1 income household. What has happened? Now both parents have to work full time just to tread water, kids are going to school hungry, families break up. Everyone is in debt, the banks get richer, the government takes more and more. House prices continue to rise. This has all been a very deliberate plan

When the house they bought was 400k, they then took 80% mortgage and their interest payment probably over 1k monthly, that's how they justify it. If someone had 400k, it's unlikely they'd buy a house cash, there's much better returns with lower risk and expenses

I earn a little more than the average UK salary. As a single person, and with the absolutely insane cost of rent in this country, I am barely scraping by. Saving or putting money away into a pension is basically a pipe dream. I reguarly ask myself what is the point? What am I working for?

If I were to stop my overtime at work I'd be in trouble. My basic wage is exactly the same as my outgoings before food and fuel costs. I've cut absolutely everything I can when it comes to bills. I even turn my heating off completely after my son goes home to his mum. This country is screwed

Iflation is actually inflated cost of goods and services by the riches. They want more and more. The elites have created casts like in India where poor people have no chance of getting out of poverty get better for their children.

The UK is a mess. Kids leaving school now can go to college or university, get an apprenticeship, basically train for a well paying career but its simply not enough nowadays. They reckon the average salary is about 37k. Fine if you were on that 25 years ago so you could afford a nice house in a good area, as a single person, but now you need double that or two of you living together on at least 30k each to have a decent standard of living. I was on at least the UK average but im having to share in my part of the country as houses are at least 8x the salary I was on. Ive given up work for the time being because I dont see what the point is, and NO im not claiming any benefits. So many people must be in the same position, why work hard all week if you still cant get anywhere to call home ?
Exactly that’s my point, I work 40 hours a week with better wages, living at my mum’s flat but still not enough to be accepted for a property because the prices are ridiculous! And landlords expect you to earn double of that! UK went downhill!
My wage is way bellow the £37K. I just about earn without tax removed £21k per year and there is no suprises that I can't even get on the property ladder at all.

@@futoooob I did that for most of my life because I could see the futility of the 9 to 5 existence. I'm retired now but I'm far better off than I've ever been in my life. I've been on two holidays to the continent last year. A lot of people who've worked hard for 40 years plus can't afford that.
I work from Sunday to Sunday, I have two daughters, I'm a widow, I'm not entitled to benefits and I'm surviving, but I wanted to live and not just survive.
You need two incomes really.

Meanwhile, they are laughing it up in the house of commons every week, like some ridiculous pantomime show, claiming expenses from the tax payer and blowing our money on pointless schemes that no one believes in or cares about. This makes me feel very sad because it is the constant topic of conversation at home on a weekly basis, and seeing these videos just amplifies the awareness of how people are suffering in quiet desperation.
I worry about everyone around me on a weekly basis, forever concerned about my family and friends financial and psychological wellbeing. The hurt and struggle behind closed doors is soo real that I've slowly developed some mental health struggles surrounding this stark external environment that is eating away our soles.
No torch of leadership is being carried to draw us out of this dark that is consuming us, and mothers and fathers are barely surviving their own unhappiness just to feed their children.
Love and happiness are dissipating into loneliness and slavery of a system built on greed and corruption.
Councils across the country going bankrupt hasn't helped, plus councils on the brink of bankruptcy,means severe cuts, sackings and depleted services all across the board for years to come, yet we can find 10s billions to give away for free to other countries.
Our interest rates for our national debt is 100 billion annually 😢
I heard some councils are having a 3 weekly bin collection to cut costs, imagine what it will be like in summer.
Then i read in South Africa they receive 2 bin collections a day 😢

I’m an immigrant who came to UK 15 years ago with one backpack and around £200 in my pocket. Now I have my own home and good salary. It was luck and hard work together which got me to this point.
This administration is putting many families in difficult situations. A lot of people are financially struggling to live, put a roof over their head and put food on the table. Things are getting worse these days, if you don't find means of multiplying your money you might wake up a day to realise you didn't plan well for yourself and family.

Millions to be cut off from gas and electricity this winter as energy bill debt continues to rise
The number of people in debt to energy suppliers has reached 5.3 million, says Citizens Advice, as its figures show 800,000 people went more than 24 hours without gas or electricity in 2023 because they could not afford top-ups.

I found it strange you have to pay all these fees and surveys to buy a house but if you buy an expensive car there are none.
I left 5years ago and haven’t looked back. I got a full time job within three weeks of arriving and in three months bought my own house. Single parent, one income. You can do it, but just not in the UK.

I found an old pay slip from 1973, I was then aged 17 years old. The payslip was for a week’s pay and my pay aged 17 was £27.50 which equates to £485 in today’s money. Now imagine if youngsters were receiving that kind of amount and then think on that at aged 18 I would have been on even more money. So tell me again how bad were the 70s and Pre-Thatcherism.

As a Malaysian who used to live in the UK as a British Permanent Resident from the 1970s to the 1990s, I didn't expect things will be worse than at the height of the early 1980s recession and record unemployment in Maggie's Britain. Yet, I'm wrong.
I thought the 80`s was good. I had a nice job in a Space semiconductor factory and driving a 5.7 litre Camaro. Full motorbike test was £28. Beer was cheap. You could smoke in pubs. There was no wokes. Cheap houses. All the people on the dole was also working on the land so they was not that hard up.

I am one of the lucky ones who worked over decades and have my own home. I am retired and now most of my income is State Pension. Not enough of course. I have now to sell my home. No choice. Plan is somewhere cheaper and smaller. Until I die. But still lucky. I have a roof and food on the table. At my age, nothing more needed. And - no one is going to throw me out.

We have started saving for retirement from the farm and maybe live off rental income, I would really appreciate it if you would do a video on how to earn passive income online and retire comfortably let's say 1 million bucks.
I agree! That's why it is advisable that you have to invest while you still have a regular job or earning a regular income, and do it constantly. You still need to have something that will keep you going even if you're investing. Good financial planning and money allocation is the key.

Immigration is just a smokescreen, unemployment is still low levels, there's more jobs than available in the job market and health sector, service sector and many other sector the wait is so long not due to Immigration but not filling roles after years of advertisement. Which doctor wants to work in UK at 50k before overtime when they could make 4 times that tax free in Dubai or more in the US

We don't have the staff, increasing wages is important to cover the cost of living, Germany and other developed countries have higher wages than UK. Problem isn't immigration but greed within UK, the inequality is shown in the video. In a service sector developed country, there's shouldn't be 14 million people in poverty, most who are working.

Thinking about it, survival has been the primary aspect of human life for millions of years (and still is, of course, among other living species). With the general increase in technology driven living standards around the world, it seems our individual expectations have changed - and possibly become unrealistic in many cases! Life, at its core, is still first and foremost about surviving - anything over and above that is (in reality) a luxury. Of course, the inherent inequality created by modern capitalist systems doesn't help matters, because we witness first hand how much 'better' things might be, 'if only'. But that is merely an illusion. We shouldn't lose sight of life's primary existential reality - if you're alive, then you're succeeding.
This whole poverty thing started with Cameron/Osbourne. They changed everything from benefits to taxes and all for the worse!
Austerity killed growth in the UK (stopped all the investment) - GDP per capita fell for a decade - and then Brexit kicked small business growth in the nether reasons
can you imagine what will happen when the average wage in China is close to or more than a UK wage, that’s when the wheels will come off. If you send all the money to Amazon and all the work to China, then what do you expect. Our factories close our work drys up and we get poorer and poorer while the rich get richer, someone other then me must see how obscene it is that one man can have a net worth of $229 billion he made from all of us giving him our hard-earned cash.

This is exactly what is slowly throttling the UK. The imported stuff the UK needs gets steadily more expensive as China, E. Europe etc get wealthier. If the UK still produced stuff then it could switch back to local suppliers but they no longer exist so the UK is now stuck in a trap. It was pretty obvious this was going to become a problem back in the 90s after the industrial bloodbath of the 80s but everyone just pretended that everything was hunky dory and spent the oil income, borrowed money and sold the family silver to foreigners. Hopefully at some point the UK will redevelop its economy and become more self sufficient as well as developing more competitive export industries.

In Romania, and Eastern Europe, we always have been poor. So it's easier for us to endure the terrible times that are coming. I survive with only 350 euros per month. I eat mostly vegetable soup. I don't go out, I don't buy new things, only second hand things, I don't have AC in summer to reduce electricity, I don't travel, etc.
I consume electricity only about 70KW per month (20 euros).
I consume water only about 10m3 (2 euros).
I eat for 200 euros per month.
I am lucky to have my own 3 room apartment (living room, kitchen, bathroom) and I pay only 40 euros per month.
And that's my life. Of course, it could be worse. People in Burundi, Africa are living with only 10 euros per month. So, I am blessed in many ways. I accept my destiny.

I am a health care assistant in the UK , private nursing home . I earn just a few pennies above the minimum wage . I could earn more in other jobs but I actually love what I do . 46 years doing this job . I am very lucky that I don't feel the cold easily . So can keep heating low . However I have to live a HMO because I can't afford to rent anymore . House of Multiple occupation . Luckily this HMO is a good one .

In United states, housing is even more expensive. For a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment, my boyfriend and I pay $2480 a month. That's without electricity or internet. I could never afford living here by myself. 1 bedroom apartment goes for $2100 a month. Horrible. I see more and more homelessness on the streets. I often wonder, is it all by design?

Im living around abuse as i cant find a place to live privately due to me being severely disabled and in and out of hospital im out of work, social housing have told me to go to a womans refuge but its over 200 miles away and thats the nearest i cant do that due to my hospital appointments being in this area id have to join a new waiting list. In the middile of all this im trying to help where i can another 2 relatives with health issues. Some days im so sick i struggle to leave the house. I was doing a lot of volunteer work until my health took another turn for the worst and i cant get to see my specialist for months. When i do they seem to pass it back to the G.p. who then passes it back. This country is just unbelievable. So many times by the time things get serious im waiting for a ambulance for 14 + hours then have seen myself in the carpark for another 8-16 hours! It really is unbelievable.
To go private for somewhere to live you need a few thousand for first months rent depoist etc. but most of all a co signer! Thats the difficulty who wants that responsibility? Someone to say yes ill cover the rent if that person cant.
So health gets worse living around abuse.

Yes, privatization helped many independent business owners to flourish, move on, gain capital, and improve the lives of themselves and their families but to what expense? Day by day, we are creating a society that resembles more of a dystopian Hunger Games society. The gap between the rich and the poor is becoming a chasm. It is unrealistic to expect all people to excel with their brains or their hands. I understand some low-skilled jobs still exist, but we need more of them, especially in the most challenging and deprived areas. Bring industry back. Another issue is that a lot of these low-skilled jobs don't pay enough anymore, but inflation is another topic of debate.

I grew up in Brazil during the 80s ("The Lost Decade", due to hyperinflation). The only advice I can give is for the young generation: when you get your first job, save the most you can while you still live with your parents because it will be difficult to save when you live by yourself. This way you will have a good down payment towards your place.
I retire this year. The worry of how I'm going to live makes me ill. I've not worked for the past year due to ill health. But I've contributed for 50 years. I started at 15 and have never stopped. Yet I have nothing. Fuel bills are the biggest drain. Diesel, gas and electric. After those and council tax, I have under £100 a week to feed myself, internet/tv. Phone/insurances, Water etc. It's a horrible thought of what is to come. Yet someone who have never contributed can come here and be warmer. Eat better than me and get more help. What a disgrace

Living crises has been going on for years for many people, not just a recent thing. I work full time, but don't go out either. I don't buy furniture or go on holiday in the UK. I don't buy new clothes. I don't see my friends out of my local area as travel is too much. I've had to sell my car, learn how to cut my own hair. I walk or cycle to work which is just as well since I've had to stop going to the gym. I don't go to the dentist. I don't have a TV. I am forced to share a flat with strangers and argue over cleanliness and noise, sometimes there is no hot water or heating. I have to live next to a A road that is polluted because it is cheap. I've had a Landlord evict me once so she could use my room for Air BnB. All of these things are on going for a long time. I can not get a council house or flat. As I am a single working male.

You know it's broken when your better off doing nothing with yourself and fundamentally being provided social housing with a guaranteed tenancy than going to work paying nearly all your earnings back into the property (for most) and constantly being at risk of eviction from selling up.
I know a young man who was working, he dropped out and quit. He lives at home with his parents and does odd cash in hand jobs. He told me he has more money now than when he was working full time and paying rent. It is now more profitable for a large segment of the population to literally not work and pay taxes. Any system like this will collapse, it is only a matter of time now.

I really feel for this lady. Having been a carer for my husband for years before he died and years before I was pension age and unwell myself I was in a pitiful state. Now on an aged pension my health has improved including mental health but I’m still well below the poverty line. I pray nothing breaks that needs replacing and budgeting is a nightmare. 68 and in Australia.

Private landlords are making a killing from vulnerable people. Its totally unfair for a basic human right - to be able to have shelter. My council flat is £400 a month but if I went private in this rural area it would be about £800-900 for the same thing. My daughter rents a bedroom in a bungalow in Bristol and pays £1000 a month for the privilege. My elderly parents rent a small 3 bedroom new build on the outskirts of Taunton - nothing much there and its £1200 a month and that air flow/mould maintenance is shocking. Come on government why are you not building more good quality council properties. The rental market must burst at some point, like this lady has seen many landlords are selling up (including. a friend of mine who owns a couple of buy to lets, she says she just gets what the estate agents say she can get) and then there are even less properties to rent if it goes to a private buyer.

I'm so confused. This woman used as an example of "poverty" works only part-time. She has a flat filled with furniture, and a kitchen packed with supplies. She has a smart phone, a laptop, and I would guess, a wi-fi connection in her home. She and her son are both well dressed. This is "poverty"? Meanwhile, in other countries, three generations share one mattress in a shack and have to walk 1 mile to a public well to fetch water. We have people in the first world whining and complaining that their part-time job isn't paying enough to pay for all the luxuries they feel they deserve. @@paulhank7967 Funny you should say that but even the military require all sorts of qualifications depending on role and then there is the issue of references and the fact i'm in my late 20s and not achieved anything might go against me. Also, they have to be satisfied with your GP records and I have had a few medical issues which I personally don't think would effect my ability to do the job but I have heard stories of people being rejected due to certain medical/health problems. So even the joining the military isn't an answer for everyone.

As two adults on above minimum wage we are now having to face the decision to never have children. I used to be able to live of £5 a week for food. Now its £15 for the same items. The house we rented was sold and we couldn’t even get a studio flat or even 1 room in a shared house for the same cost. We haven’t been on holiday anywhere other than a tent in the uk in the last 5 years and even worried about the fact it was £11 per night. I simply don’t know what we can do anymore to save money. I come home from work and then work from home in the evenings, leaving me with little time to clean,cook and meal plan. Some nights i just get in bed and work from there because the house is so cold. It shouldn’t be this way!

This is all so depressing. I'm out of the UK and can't even imagine how to survive there today. Last time I visited I was spending over 50 GBP a day on next to nothing. Families need to stick together and pool their resources, budget and plan ahead. I was shocked when a friend told me she earns almost 40k as does her husband. I was shocked that she could barely afford anything for her family, works hard and even keeps an allotment.

I'm having to sleep on my friends couch after getting kicked out by my parents. The average rent price in my area is £1600 a month, which is just too much, despite having a good wage.
PS: May plan to relocate somewhere outside london.

2 in the flat, 50 mugs in the cupboard. Laptop, mobile phone, Car keys hanging on the flat keys. 10 boxes of branded cerials on the counter that cost three times the alternatives.
I have sympathy for people on renting cost, electric/gas, council tax. But there's so much evidence of bad spending if you actually watch the background as opposed to listening to the interview.
But I'm yet to see anyone with a BMI of less than 40 on one of these poverty snippets. Nobody's starving and the heating's on as being as there's no jumper in sight.
It IS tough out there, but not enough people take responsibility for their part in the situation to ease the pressure that comes from the things that are out of their control.

so true. so many just dont get educated about how to live day to day properly. eating pre made foods, getting take outs, buying fizzy drinks that cost stupid money. drink water, make ur own food , its so much cheaper. stop eating cereal , its not even good for you. just buy what you need from day to day.
Also, Apple Watch on the wrist. That’s a totally unnecessary luxury. I believe she’s struggling because the cost of living crisis is real and everything HAS become a lot more expensive but your own spending also plays a part.

£1600 pcm is insane. Unfortunately it sounds like they’re going to need to move out of Surrey but even here in Nottinghamshire you’re looking at about £1000 per month rent for a 2 or 3 bed house. Maybe £800 if it’s a bad/poorer area

I need to find £5k a month to survive. Everything gone up, mortgage, electric, oil, diesel, for two vehicles, (before you start, we need two vehicles as we work totally separate industries at different times of the day/week). Food gone up £400 per month. Crazy.

It's universal credit that has created this the councils must pay 100% of people's rent wherever they live in England or build social housing, the government have allowed investment landlords to take over the rental market the old benefit system worked better....

Please remember that most of the single parents didn't choose to be single parents, their marriage/ partnership broke down, the other parent deserted them❤ and they were the the parent who tried everything to care for their children. Maximum rent for council houses should be 30% of a full time wage of a minimum wage worker so the rest can go on bills and food.
I think that’s what it used to be … then of course councils were told to let tenants by them (which was awesome for my family) but they weren’t allowed to build more (which was terrible for everyone else)
Maybe I can just get a directorship or two at a banking group doing twenty hours a year to tie me over until I get my peerage??

People on JSA \ Universal Credit are rolling in money compared to those on ESA disability benefit. ESA never got the £20 per week increase during Covid. Or any increase since. The government said they didn't have the money while feathering their nests with PPE money. FCKING TORY CROOKS.

Not better government and it’s not FREE it’s paid for by our tax like everything. If people stopped breeding or over breeding and started working two days a week in a care home then poverty would stop but they don’t want to and pop out their 8th child expecting others to pay for everything. If men worked for their families, if single parents expect a room in both houses for their children, if people lost weight and died at a certain age.
It’s a pyramid scheme- it all is. It’s slavery from Roman times and the buying and selling of slaves but they don’t pay we do.c

The government needs to impose a rent freeze , an end to no fault evictions, serious increase in benefits and minimum wage, and higher tax in the top income earners. It then needs to close tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy and start building social housing on a large scale. There is much land locked up by land banking that should be procured at reduced rates in the same way people's homes were procured by HS2.

Rent freezes will just accelerate the landlord sell off. Are you going to freeze interest rates too? The only real answer is a massive house building programme.

The strange thing is that every western nation have the same problems !
This whole problem started when the people at the top discovered that they can lend us money for things that we want but don't really need. This had a knock-on affect on Inflation and let prices stay higher than they would if access to the money was not as easy. People need to wake up and realize we are being milked like cows. If People refused to borrow money then the prices would soon drop as business would still needs to sell stuff.
