I was going to comment that some acknowledgement should be given to the guy playing the box. Never would have picked out that it was the great PM himself if you hadn't pointed it out!
Grmílemagat Machree. . . .yes Liam Devally, a great voice and such clear diction. 🤗 As a young guy, I recall so well listening to him on radio and TV programmes. He hosted many, singing in Irish with fine renditions of our songs, always lively, happy, positive and pleasant. Amhránaí den scoth ! He was a barrister and later in life a judge. Great video and a young talented Paddy Moloney “ar an mbosca ceoil”. 🎶
Oh to be in Kerry again. To drink at Kruger's with Tomas O'Cinneide, to stay a night in Bru na Graige, and walk to the old Dun an Oir. Kevanes, Malones, Peadar O'Riada....
Yes it's to do with the dialect, Ulster or Munster. In Munster they tend to use eclipsis with a preposition, in Ulster (Donegal) they use a séimiú or lenition hence "ar phocán buile". Don't know why anyone would ever choose to use a Donegal construction in a Munster song! Unless for a particular reason. Correct my gramadach má's mian leat.
Liam, God rest his soul, spent part of his early years in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal, that may shed some light on your query. Good observation on your part, thanks for airing it.
@@devally2432 Sadly I'm from Drogheda - so a lot of these nuances are way over my head - but Liam's delivery is beyond reproach - I've picked up a lot worse in Donegal too!
Do you mean Liam's right or your right? The guy on Liam's right is probably stone deaf with Liam singing in his ear. The guy on his right (with the beard and glasses) was too boring to bother about.
well, the kid is just symbolical - virginity is always a huge issue in primitive societies and Puck can be looked on as just a sort of remembrance of that period in cultural development - like taking out the old photos isn´t it?
Yeh, kid - young girl = Virgin. I´m sure any relationship to the puck was always purely symbolic but there are accounts of kingship rites and indeed, rites for queens in ancient Ireland which hardly bear thinking about - though the actual ceremonies with virgin `queens´ which the Spanish witnessed in South America are much more revolting - and just too gory to make their way out of the anthropological literature. Don´t ask.
Puck fair is about sex and wild nature. The goat is crowned king and a young girl (virgin) is crowned as (presumably) His Queen. All very smutty but ancient and archtypal and what the hell, anyway lots of fun.
No, the song isn´t about sex ´n stuff. My first comment here was a reply to someone way down the page in reference to Puck fair, which is -a bit. The commentry context on TH-cam is always confusing. About kids - the idea of keeping EVERYTHING even touching on sex a big dirty secret from them is sordid and sick. - normal, i´d agree, but still very backward and ill.
I grew up in Louisville Ky and just discovered that Liam is my cousin. What a wonderful voice! Cheers to the rest of my cousins from Menlough!
God bless you, Liam was my Uncle, God rest his soul, he was a fine man.
He is sorely missed.
@@devally2432 cé thú?
Nonsense. If I had a quid for every yank that sais he's Irish 🙄
What a cristal clear voice and pronunciation, this has to be my favorite version along with the Chieftains cover!
Just noticed Paddy Maloney playing box, some sombre faces in the crowd.I was lucky to escape.

Good spot

His version of Lagan love also very good
EPIC version! Liam Devally has a masterful voice!
Wow What a powerful voice!!! I love it!!!!
I love this version and Liam is a great singer
Composed by Donal O'Mahon from Cork , now regarded as a classic !
Brilliant voice, funny though that it was the Box player Paddy Maloney in the background who came to World Wide fame as the leader the Chieftains.
I'm remember learning that song in school..at the time we werent a bit impressed...glad now.
Excellent
Wow! What wonderful, clear and powerful voice. I'd never heard of him before. Thanks for the vid!
Found this by accident, and can't believe it. I learned this song in Irish class at St. Mary's CBS, Glen Rd, Belfast about 47 years ago!
Great video, it is the community that impresses me, wholesome
I have never heard this guy before but he's amazing! Great find, many thanks.

Dowcha Liam Boy a great blast of it.. Comere to me lads can any one tell me is that John Hubbard next to him can any one tell me.
There's Paddy Moloney playing the box....
Paddy Mooney of the Chieftains, top left on the squeezebox!
wooooooo powerful whats the english translatision
always loved this since i was a kid, what year was it recorded, sometime in the 60's i guess
Anyone know where can I fnd more of Liam devally? Maybe it's just me, but it seems his music went little under the radar, so to speak.
I don't think he made a career of music.
Liam was an amateur singer, his knowledge of music was encyclopedic, he was a barrister and ended his career as a much respected judge.
Paddy Molony of the Chieftains playing the accordion to this.
If Paddy is drinking you can be sure somebody else bought the drink . B
What's Rolf Harris doing there?
Is that Gerry Adams on his right?lol
Liam died this April. A terrible loss of a great natural singer!
whats that when its at home? (lawlz)

Jeez! yes. I´m a bit on the overworked side at the moment, sorry.
Now you´re losing me... do you mean any kid that reads this or that listens to the song.
I´m lost.
Terrific voice on him eh.
I love this video, what a voice, have it downloaded. But isnt your man on his right gas, he must be stoned!!!!

I though Gerry Adams could speak irish....
Palimpsest, all good excuses
And not a single mask in sight 🙄
Duh...this was recorded years ago.
