It's solid construction and has a good history. Lmao. Doug Demuro, Scotty Kilmer, Chris Fix, Eric the car Guy, all know that Land and Range Rovers are as reliable as a used rusted can opener, when all your food is in cans. Your screwed. Go to TRLs page they brought a brand new Land Rover and the first week it was in the dealership because the check engine light came.on andn2 sensor need to be replaced. How the hell did it come off the line and it was sold and already ends up in the shop and ot wasn't a recall.

      Reading some of these comments, anyone would think that all JLRs broke down all the time. They don’t. I’ve had four and they have been completely reliable, only been in the shop for service and the extended warranty I paid for proved to be a complete waste of money. They have a poor reputation of course and they are not without their problems as a brand but then I had a Q8 for 18 months which spent nine weeks in the shop until I lost patience with it and went back to a Range Rover.

    The main problem with the LR 4 is the Low quality Timing Chain Tensioners and Guides. They can be upgraded and then they are reliable. I don't recommend people to buy a Range Rover/ Land Rover unless they are a professional mechanic. The Dealer wants $ 10,000 to replace the Timing Chains, Guides, Tensioners, Camshaft Sprockets, etc. There are expensive special tools required to work on Land Rovers. I purchase high- end cars & trucks as a hobby.

  • @brianandrews7099
    @brianandrews7099 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I really don’t know what the market is like in your area, but where I am, a nicely cared for older LR/RR, without a BMW engine, is always in demand ... especially the Ford derived V8 models (such as the Sport HSE) and the 90s/early 2000s Discos and Disco II. The P38 Range Rovers a little less so unless they are very clean and lower miles. The older Rovers, 2002-2004, seemed to suffer the worst from slipped sleeves because BMW would not invest in updating the worn out engine block tooling for the old Buick aluminum V8. The older engines were better than the last trucks that used it. Ironically, most of the Rovers that are not worth buying are the trucks that utilized most of the BMW parts (specifically, the V8 engines). Like most all European cars, the most troublesome aspects of the larger Ford produced Rovers are based on technology that fails as the trucks age and wear. Navigation systems and computer controlled driver’s assist controls fail and are complex and expensive to fix, especially when the truck ages and values out. Also like most of the European makes, the newer models are built with leases in mind (to non traditional customers) and over rely on the brand name to move cheaper engineered and built units. Granted, a newer Evoque or Discovery with a Ford supplied engine will provided for cheap, easy to find engine parts; however, the question exists is does a newer, smaller LR/RRs give you any more “bang for the buck” than just buying a Ford Edge or Edge based Lincoln? They just don’t seem to have the ride or comfort that the larger and older Rovers offered ... but, to each his own. As far as service, I am really not sure that a 15 year old or newer Rover will be any less reliable or more/less difficult to repair than the same age BMW. Granted, replacement aftermarket parts for the older Rovers are not as cheap or easy to locate as older BMW ... which is the major factor that has (so far) kept me from owning one. Outside of that, I wouldn’t mind taking on a “big”, non BMW powered Rover! If someone discovers an economical engine swap for the BMW V8 Rovers, they would grow in popularity, too!
    I am not aware of any US market Rovers having a Jag engine other than the Ford based V8 that they both shared?

I considered them usual wear and tear such as the AC compressor, valve lifter, suspension airbags and a few cosmetic things such as the dash leather peeling off. I find it interesting that most of Landrover negativity comes from non owners of the brand. I've owned a few over 8 years, the latest being the L494 Range Rover Sport in diesel format. We've towed our caravan for thousands of miles in all weather. So far no major issues. A sensor fault on a Disco 4 cost £150 to fix. I believe the key is to purchase a well looked after model, service it regularly and listen to your local independent who often understands them better than the main dealers. If you don't want the service costs or just expect it to run neglected buy a Landcruiser. I know I've had x2 Colorado's and a 120. As for nobody wanting them, that certainly isn't true in England where prices for GOOD examples remain high. ALL cars are machines and all machines can break. I'd rather spend money repairing a car I love rather than spending to repair the beige box of fictional reliability that some cars promise!

    • @atx-cvpi_99
      @atx-cvpi_99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Discovery 2 was probably one of the worst Land Rovers ever made because of the front driveshaft breaking the transmission case. The worst Land Rover ever built was the Freelander 1 with the 1.8 or 2.5 engines. Those engines were known to blow head gaskets at a higher failure rate than a Honda CR-V. In America, a lot of Freelander 1 SUVs were lemon law buybacks. They were really bad and completely unreliable and they had a lot of problems under warranty. NEVER EVER BUY A USED LAND ROVER.

    I’m pretty disappointed in Nathan and the comments. Compared to BMW’s terrible reliability, Land Rovers are definitely more reliable. Everyone on the comments loves to defend bmws and say that they just require “More maintenance”. This isn’t true. All BMWs suffer from door lock failures for years, CAN bus shorts, vanos failures, strut failures, oil pan leaks valve stem seals and the list goes on. Land Rover is no worse and probably better than any bmw.

      I’ve worked on both and bmw is by far worse. Constant problems with the twin turbo v8s, every engine model that bmw make suffers from rod bearing issues and the list goes on and on. Land Rover problems are much easier to deal with, like leaky airbags. BMW on the other hand has inherit engine design flaws. The rod bearing failures across all models should be all the evidence I need.

Reliability is taught as a subject in the UK but this knowledge has not been accepted by the car industry even with the UK being the home of the rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine. Another oddity from a European manufacturer. Quite right keep well away . Hopefully they may employ a few engineers like fiat and make a good car.

    What would be groundbreaking, would be if Land Rover could make a Range Rover, where unbeatable reliability was their goal.
