Personally I think this both helped and hurt the industry internationally. Definitely this was the first time a lot of people heard of kpop, and that was important. But then it also attached preconceptions to kpop for a couple years that all kpop mvs were ridiculous, corny, and over-the-top. It took a couple years of people showing people other kpop videos (like BTS), for people to take the kpop industry more seriously, and that Gangnam Style & Psy were not just anomalies.
This song is excellent and with an original beat. Most PSY songs are. Close-minded people may have had this preconception (perhaps persons in the western world)...I never met any of them though. However, LMFAO, Nicky Minaj, and Lady Gaga's "corny" were considered acceptable around that time. We do not always need a song that sounds emotional to enjoy it. Gangman style did not at all hurt the industry at all. In fact, it caused youtube to adjust its programming because of the record number of views.

This was my very first introduction to kpop back in 2012 (2 years before I first listened to BTS). When I first heard it I never heard of kpop before and tbh I didn't even know it was korean all I knew was that it was such a catchy beat, the choreo was easy to learn and the MV just made me laugh also know I say that people who know I love kpop can blame PSY or getting me into this genre. I owe my love of kpop to this song if it wasn't for this song my life would be so different and my music taste would just be plain boring
