What you said about Bill Murray is true. My favorite Bill Murray movie is "What About Bob?" But yes behind the scenes Bill Murray tells Richard Dryfuss's character ..nobody will like you...Then Bill Murray ..drunk throws a heavy glass ashtray at Richard Dryfuss's head...missing him by mere inches.
"Out of one's gourd." A European world explorer discovered a remote tribe where the men wore gourds around there "male members." They were otherwise naked, but wore gourds (the more lengthy and elongated the better, get it?) tide in place with natural twine. So to be "out of one's gourd" is to be...well.
Happy Groundhog Day. One of my favorite Bill Murray movies of all time. Replaying the same day over and over again would just make my head explode. Lol
Welcome to my life. Everyday with two young kids feels like Groundhogs Day. Just the same routine over and over everyday and it feels like it's never going to end.
I really admire how this movie really explores the idea of what you would do stuck in a time loop with no consequences. From being selfish, to being depressed and finally, being selfless and helping out in the best way you can.
Just an fyi, the loop lasted almost 33 years. Also, i usually attend this fun festival, abt 2 hr drive for me. Its sooooo much fun! 20k people freezing arses off, drunk at 6 am. But its a fun festival full of the nicest people u can find being ridiculous!!
I like how when Phil reveals his full situation to Rita in the diner STILL doesn't break the loop because it is still Phil being selfish to his own situation rather than being genuinely selfless.
Imagine how hard it would be to readjust to surprises and mortality. He'd have constant panic attacks, and practically hide behind Rita when he meets new people for the first time in decades or centuries (depending on whose estimate you use).
- Baby Michael Shannon (Zod from MAN OF STEELE, among so many, MANY roles) was the "WRESTLEMANIA!" newlywed. - Brian Doyle Murray (the Mayor) isn't the only brother in the movie... the "Think it'll be an early spring" guy on the stairs at the b&b is another Murray.
"When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter. From Punxsutawney, it's Phil Connors. So long." Fun Fact: There are exactly 38 days depicted in this film, either partially or in full. The actual time Phil (Bill Murray) spends in his loop can only be guessed at. Art Imitates Life Fact: The idea of Phil Connors reading to Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell) while she sleeps came from Bill Murray. His wife drank too much champagne on their wedding night and fell asleep early, so Murray read aloud to her until he too fell asleep. Location Location Fact: The film was not filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but actually in Woodstock, Illinois (just fifty miles from Bill Murray's hometown of Wilmette, Illinois). There is a small plaque that reads "Bill Murray Stepped Here" on the curb where Murray continually steps into a puddle. There is another plaque on the building wall at the corner that says "Ned's Corner" where Phil Connors was continually accosted by Ned Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky). During the Ned scene the sign for "Woodstock Jewelers" is clearly seen in the background.
This is my favorite Bill Murray movie, and I can't thank you both enough for this reaction, Robert and Vanessa! ❤️❤️ I would hate to relive the same day over and over again, but I enjoy seeing how it's a reluctant and slow progression of Phil's character arc and how he starts to become less selfish and more selfless, giving, and generous, and how his relationship with Rita becomes more natural, endearing, and meaningful at the end. I still tear up over the old man dying, but it really changes Phil in a big way and it definitely makes us reevaluate our own perspectives on life. We should always live life to the fullest, do our best to be kind and helpful to others, and to use our time wisely, for we never know what tomorrow could bring, or if our time comes sooner than we expect it to.
This whole town is real, and it's in Woodstock, IL. I've been a few times, and there's a plaque embedded in the sidewalk in the exact spot that Bill Murray steps in that puddle! Understandably, the town hosts quite the celebration every Groundhog's Day thanks to this movie.
You mentioned the anxiety of not knowing when you'd get out of the time loop. There's a game called Returnal that deals with that exact scenario. You crash on an alien planet, and every time you die, you wake up and do it over again. In this case, it's both a storytelling element and an expression of the game mechanics as you figure out what you have to do to escape.
This was shot in Woodstock, IL. I played basketball against a school up there in '94, so we drove around the town square & I remember thinking it was so cool to feel like I was inside of a movie.
The amount of times I've replayed situations in my head and wished I could actually redo them, I'd gladly do a few groundhog days just to see how things would actually pan out if things were different, even slightly lol. 😅 Of course then I'd want to come back to where my life is currently (atleast for the most part 😅🤣). The homeless elderly man scene always gets me teary eyed.... Ugh. Not just because he died but because of Phil's efforts to care for him after over and over, and keep him alive, to no prevail.. honestly, kinda like the homeless guy in Scrooged, oddly enough. Lol. Great video, glad Vanessa got to watch for the first time! P.s. there's a sort of "sequel" that is a vr game lol. I've not watched any cutscenes of it, or played it, but I know it's supposed to be Phil's son as the main character now and has some returning characters.
@35:13 “…when he was doing whatever”…..like when he was doing nancy taylor……..the old man was dying. Really my favorite part of the story. His presence is subtle at first, and then becomes an anchor of the plot, changing the character and audiences entire perspective.
As far as how much time he was stuck in this time loop, it is about 33 years. But the original script was 10,000 years, good thing it was cut down lol.

In the old DVD commentary, the director and producer talk how in the original script, one of Phil's old girlfriends placed a curse on him until he could learn to love others instead of just himself. And that that he re-lived the day for at least 25 years.
What a magnificent movie and an even better Reaction....... messaged you on Facebook saying I'll watch this after work..... and it was worth the wait......

7:07 Gobbler's Knob is a REAL place 2 miles southeast of Punxsutawney and they REALLY hold the Groundhog Civic Festival every year. It used to attract 2000 people prior to 1993 when this movie came out. Then it grew to 10-20,000 every year except for COVID in 2021. Today's ceremony in 2023- 30th anniversary of this classic movie: th-cam.com/video/rmyTNlnPn_0/w-d-xo.html
Just recently former SNL actor Jay Pharaoh said he got into an altercation with Bill Murray when he guest hosted. Apparently Murray kept hitting him on his arm for no reason and each time the hits got harder. Pharaoh got fed up, picked him up, and slammed him on the floor. I think I've seen this movie the same number of times that Phil looped through Groundhog Day. Love it. Harold Ramis on the Metaphor of Ground Hog Day: th-cam.com/video/BkEUpymTanA/w-d-xo.html
My favourite theory behind the causes of everything is that Rita's a god/celestial being who wanted Phil, but a "fixed" Phil. So it wasn't until she decided to end it, that time proceeded normally. And that she waited until he essentially prayed for her to stay.
That is stupid, dumbass. Especially since it is shown in the film the cause.phionsays something like: I wanna spend an extra second in Puxatawny? I don't think so! ....and that is what causes the loop!
I was watching a video on the rise of toxic misogyny role models for boys the other day, when someone said something I thought was pretty astute. “Men think they’re competing against the top ten or twenty percent of other men for a woman’s attention, when really they’re just competing against the joy a woman takes in her solitude.” When viewed through that lease, oh my god… why aren’t we forcing more incels to watch this movie, Clockwork Orange style if we have to?!! You don’t attract women by telling them what they want to hear or giving them things, you attract women by being a genuinely good, genuinely interesting person.
To Qoate Simon Pegg's Garry King from The World end... "WhaaaaaTT!" How on earth have you not seen this movie?! The only small issue I have with the film, and its not the films fault, is I saw the film a few weeks after watching the Star Trek: TNG Episode 'Cause and Effect' (one of my fave episodes) and I was annoyed that the story was no longer original and couldn't compete, despite being a brilliant vehicle for Bill Murray. Bing!!!
If you like Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania also has Balls Mills, Beaver, Big Beaver, Bird-in-Hand, Blue Ball, Bumpville, Climax, Fertility, Honey Pot, Intercourse, Jugtown, Lover, Paradise, Peach Bottom, Two Lick Valley, and Virginville. Also used to have Noodle Doosie and Free Love Valley.
If you're a fan of time loop movies, I also recommend Palm Springs starring Andy Samberg. I believe it's streaming on Hulu but I'm not positive if it's an original. Great movie but not nearly as popular as it deserves.
6:08 - Then you have not seen him in *Memento* (2000) or *Sneakers* (1992) 22:14 - Fun Fact: Bill Murray is a real life Francophile and has both visited and lived in France for long periods of times throughout his life and even studied philosophy at the University of Sorbonne (His French in this movie is however passable but not great!)
Wrong, dumbass. The WRITERS said ten years, so ten years is canon, it doesn't matter what producers say, it only matters what WRITERS say and the producers never even said that's dumbass.
I'd recommend looking into the Groundhog Day musical, the soundtrack is actually very cleverly done, with a lot of word play around Phil's name (such as "Philanthropy" and "Philandering"), and about the passage of time, and the meta commentary of actors having to repeatedly perform the same show over and over just as the characters play out the same day over and over.
Tim Minchin did such a great job with Matilda the musical, so I'm really looking forward to finally seeing Groundhog Day when it finally comes to London
Your editor did a great job. You can tell they have watched the movie and likes it. It helps. Trust me, I've watched a lot of reactions to this movie. It's definitely one of my faves. Edit: I know Patreons get to go first. But, if you get an open slot for a movie, please consider the Bill Murray version of The Razors' Edge. It's not for everyone but, I think you would like it. Thanks for the nice reaction.
Appreciate it. I'm the primary editor and this film is definitely one of my favorites. Haven't heard of Razors Edge but we'll look into it. There's a ton of stuff on our list, but Bill Murray movies are usually a treat to watch. - Robert
People on the morning news have to get up early. In fact 6am is pretty late, they're usually at work, broadcasting by then. Going to bed at 4pm is pretty normal.
I remember seeing this playing on one of the other screens at the drive-in when I was a kid. I wanted to watch it, but unfortunately got voted out by my family. - Robert
Sounds like when I went to the original Mortal Kombat by myself whilst the family went to Flubber, but that was in a theater. Thanks for the reply btdubs!
Love that intro. I also didn't know until recently that you could react to movies without getting strikes and shit. One of my favorite movies, crazy when movie lovers haven't seen this one. Yeah I don't recognize some scenes... so I've never seen the and didn't know there was an extended edition. It's funny and sad.
There's still the possibility of strikes, but luckily most studios nowadays seem to allow reactions, they just claim the videos and make all the money for themselves. "It's good biz".
You didn't do enough research then, dumbass. Cuz the writers said ten years, dumbass. 462 days isn't long enough to master all his skills, idiot. That is only a little more than a year, idiot.
I went on a first date to this movie when it came out in theaters. The girl wanted to see a few good men but I talked her into seeing this. There was not a second date.😂
Why did the old man always recognize him? Wht did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math folks on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, and know the town so well, and everyone know him, he was in this loop over 30 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she WANTED to be with him. The doctor guy, Harold Ramis. Lots of writing producing directing acting etc., movies with bill. Such as Stripes, Ghostbusters 1-2, and others. It was a story originally written, very dark, and him being in the loop like 10,000 years!😮😮😮 Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman, reworked it to make it a bit funny! But u must ask urself? Did he really leave the loop completely? He's staying with rita, in the town he knows everything about, he's going to live there, everyone else knows him extensively...
One thing is most people don't possibly see it, not sure if this contributed to this happening because sorta close to beginning. Phil was bashed over head with shovel, that would contribute to his memory loss.
So… That last day It didn’t show what ge did for that old man that last day. Especially since it truly was the last time he would talk to him or the last chance he would have to give the old man a peaceful passing. Probably because there was so much positive stuff he was able to do, that they didn’t want to interrupt it with something sad. Knowing that the old man would die no matter what he did.
@@LatetotheParty yeah. I’ve seen this movie countless times. For some reason this was my first time thinking about that. Sad reality to think that stuff happens all over the world every day. Some people have fallen so far, but it wouldn’t take much help at all to put them back on track. All it takes is somebody to step up and do it. When I worked in a prison, I’d talk to some of the inmates about stuff like that. “You only get one chance at this life. You could learn from your time in here and learn from the bad decisions you’ve made, or you can just keep wasting your life doing the same bs again and again.” I hope I was able to make a difference with some of the people I talked to. That was one of the things I really enjoyed about that job. Trying to help steer these guys onto a more productive path.
Wrong, dumbass. It was only ten years cuz that is what the writers said so that is what is canon. Doesn't matter what people estimate. People can estimate anything.
@@MrParkerman6 it would take ten to twenty years ALONE just to learn to play the piano the way he did. Some of us aren't as dumb as the director's think we are. 🤣
If I had a Time loop and it was my first cruise to the Bahamas. I would be okay with that. Or my second cruise that one was fun too LOL. Reasons being if it was Cruise number one I would get to spend time with my mom again who passed away. If it was Cruise number 2, see the scene in the movie where he talks about sea otters lol.
I’d definitely learn new skills(musical skills) through this loop 💯 Btw - your reaction title name…that’s my life 😂👌🏼oh and always wanted to perfect my French speaking since HS(which was really hard but fun); check out “Lost in Translation” Bill Murray n Scarlet Johansson 👍🏼
I always think of two things when I see this film. First, why didn't Phil just stay up one night and see what actually happens at 6:00 am? I mean, hold that broken pencil in his hand and look out the window as the clock ticks over to 6. And second, Phil now has like $2000 a month in insurance premiums that Ned sold him.
"why didn't Phil just stay up one night and see what actually happens at 6:00 am?" He must have done -- how else would he know that the reset happens at 6am? We just don't see everything he's done. I guess he can cancel, or fail to make the next month's payment?
@@wwoods66 Oh yeah, there are lots of "maybes". Another one is that he really wanted to get out of town. He could have bailed on the whole Punxsutawney story one morning, called a cab at 6:05 am, and been back in Pittsburgh before the storm hit and closed the road. It's only about 75 miles. But, when it comes to fantasies like this movie, you have to give the producers some poetic license. For instance, there is no sound in the vacuum of space, but if we didn't give George Lucas a little wiggle room here, we wouldn't have been able to hear those cool seismic charge explosion sounds when Jango was trying to lose Obi-Wan in the asteroid field during that cool chase in Attack of the Clones.
@@ClayLoomis1958 Wouldn't have changed anything. If fate wants you to wake up in your bed at 6:00 a.m. then you wake up at 6:00 a.m. in your bed. Whatever he would have been doing at 23:59:59 p.m. - one second later he would've woken up in his bed, with the alarm clock playing "I got you, babe".
@@o.b.7217 Well, it's a bit silly to try to apply logic to a fantasy anyway. This is the time paradox where movies always run into trouble, and why science has never been able to say time travel is possible. Broken down to its basic principles, the problem is this; if someone goes back in time and kills their father when he was a child, then they would never have been born to travel back in time to kill him. Ruins a good movie though. lol
I might be crazy but I think he was trapped for 6 weeks would make sense because Phil the groundhog saw his shadow not sure but it would be a fun thought 🤔 💭
He didn't learn to play piano that well in six weeks. He tells Rita she could learn to flick cards in six months, though that may or may not be from his personal experience.
I'm so happy that Vanessa finally watched this classic. One thing, how would the piano teacher know to say "He's my student." & take credit? The way he played that day there's no way he went to her for a lesson that day. Second thing, I love that this is Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, 8 Mile, Boardwalk Empire, Knives Out, etc.)'s very first movie role. He's Fred.
Well, I guess he must have gone for one more lesson. Probably made her think he was some unrealized virtuoso who just needed the right teacher to bring it out.
Why wouldn't he come in for a lesson that day? If he thought that way other days that he could skip lessons he wouldn't have gotten good. Skipping lessons is for losers!
36:36 I heard that too. That theory kinda ruined the movie for me. I mean, could you imagine reliving the same day for 10,000 years?! I would've gone crazy!
@@LatetotheParty Personally, my headcanon is that the loops we saw in the movie are the only loops that happened, so Phil only relived the day 35 times. I know it's not true, but it's what I tell myself so I can enjoy the movie. 😅
I'm always bothered by the fact that she took the time to count the 88 cents rather than just offer the 339 dollars - Dammit she had to count 339 dollars! What's that if she's lucky? 3 hundreds, a twenty, a tenner, a fiver and 4 singles??

It really took me by surprise that Vanessa never had watch this classic
Wait til you see what else is on the list.

Love it. Harold Ramis on the Metaphor of Ground Hog Day:
th-cam.com/video/BkEUpymTanA/w-d-xo.html
My favourite theory behind the causes of everything is that Rita's a god/celestial being who wanted Phil, but a "fixed" Phil. So it wasn't until she decided to end it, that time proceeded normally. And that she waited until he essentially prayed for her to stay.
That is stupid, dumbass.
Especially since it is shown in the film the cause.phionsays something like:
I wanna spend an extra second in Puxatawny? I don't think so!
....and that is what causes the loop!
@MrParkerman6 now THAT is a truly stupid theory.
I was watching a video on the rise of toxic misogyny role models for boys the other day, when someone said something I thought was pretty astute. “Men think they’re competing against the top ten or twenty percent of other men for a woman’s attention, when really they’re just competing against the joy a woman takes in her solitude.”
When viewed through that lease, oh my god… why aren’t we forcing more incels to watch this movie, Clockwork Orange style if we have to?!! You don’t attract women by telling them what they want to hear or giving them things, you attract women by being a genuinely good, genuinely interesting person.
It's actually Groundhog Day!!
Exactly!
To Qoate Simon Pegg's Garry King from The World end... "WhaaaaaTT!"
How on earth have you not seen this movie?!
The only small issue I have with the film, and its not the films fault, is I saw the film a few weeks after watching the Star Trek: TNG Episode 'Cause and Effect' (one of my fave episodes)
and I was annoyed that the story was no longer original and couldn't compete, despite being a brilliant vehicle for Bill Murray.
They sound awfully repressed. 🤣
If you're a fan of time loop movies, I also recommend Palm Springs starring Andy Samberg. I believe it's streaming on Hulu but I'm not positive if it's an original. Great movie but not nearly as popular as it deserves.
I was just going to recommend that, love that movie.
6:08 - Then you have not seen him in *Memento* (2000) or *Sneakers* (1992)
22:14 - Fun Fact: Bill Murray is a real life Francophile and has both visited and lived in France for long periods of times throughout his life and even studied philosophy at the University of Sorbonne (His French in this movie is however passable but not great!)
Stephen Tobolowsky’s Birthday is a good doc too.
Spaceballs, Community and Silicon Valley.
Pennsylvania also has Middlesex and Blue Bell (formerly Blue Ball)

The producers of the movie say he was there 12,295 days or 33 years 350 days
Wrong, dumbass. The WRITERS
said ten years, so ten years is canon, it doesn't matter what producers say, it only matters what WRITERS say and the producers never even said that's dumbass.
We saw that one existed. Gotta hear those songs now.
- Robert
I can watch this movie over and over again.
People on the morning news have to get up early. In fact 6am is pretty late, they're usually at work, broadcasting by then. Going to bed at 4pm is pretty normal.
35:03 Awesome "School of Rock" reference! 😊
"Cellooooo!" 🎸
I first saw it as a young lad at a drive up movie theater
I remember seeing this playing on one of the other screens at the drive-in when I was a kid. I wanted to watch it, but unfortunately got voted out by my family. - Robert
Sounds like when I went to the original Mortal Kombat by myself whilst the family went to Flubber, but that was in a theater. Thanks for the reply btdubs!
One of my all time favorite movies ever. I love watching all the reactions to this masterpiece.
Love that Hackers shirt
"Hack the planet!!!!"
The cowboy scene was in the movie originally.
Hack the Planet!! Love that shirt. Hackers is a fun movie.
Agreed!
there is kinda a caddyshack call back when he driving with the groundhog
Love that intro. I also didn't know until recently that you could react to movies without getting strikes and shit.
One of my favorite movies, crazy when movie lovers haven't seen this one.
Yeah I don't recognize some scenes... so I've never seen the and didn't know there was an extended edition.
It's funny and sad.
There's still the possibility of strikes, but luckily most studios nowadays seem to allow reactions, they just claim the videos and make all the money for themselves. "It's good biz".
@@LatetotheParty That's good that they take that opportunity then so people can make these videos.
NED?
NED RYERSON?
Bing!!!!
Michael Shannon as the newlywed husband was so young.
Can't believe that was him!
Imagine this, years after this Phil gets lost in the Quantum Realm😆. Hello guys.
Then he's almost eaten by his drink.
I did some research and Phil relived Feb 2 a total of 462 days.
You didn't do enough research then, dumbass. Cuz the writers said ten years, dumbass. 462 days isn't long enough to master all his skills, idiot. That is only a little more than a year, idiot.
That's Michael Shannon as one of the newlyweds.
Blew our minds! We had no clue!
I went on a first date to this movie when it came out in theaters. The girl wanted to see a few good men but I talked her into seeing this. There was not a second date.😂
🤣 You made the right choice.
At least we assume being that we've never seen A Few Good Men. It's on the list though.
@@LatetotheParty It’s actually one of my favorite movies of all time. You’ll love it.
Love me some multiplicity too
The guy in the bed and breakfast with the glasses is also a Murray brother
... I'd say you dodged a bullet ... for those who cannot enjoy Groundhog Day are not compatible with those who do.
Nancy is the real keeper😍
Cool "Hackers" t-shirt ✊🤘🤙
Hack the Planet!!!
TRIVIA: Phil was actually trap in a loop for 10,000 years
Wrong, fucking dumbass.
The writers said it was only ten years, so that is what is canon, idiot.
One thing is most people don't possibly see it, not sure if this contributed to this happening because sorta close to beginning. Phil was bashed over head with shovel, that would contribute to his memory loss.
So…
That last day
It didn’t show what ge did for that old man that last day. Especially since it truly was the last time he would talk to him or the last chance he would have to give the old man a peaceful passing.
Probably because there was so much positive stuff he was able to do, that they didn’t want to interrupt it with something sad. Knowing that the old man would die no matter what he did.
We like to think he got him a hot meal and took him somewhere warm for his final night before he went to the party.
You could learn from your time in here and learn from the bad decisions you’ve made, or you can just keep wasting your life doing the same bs again and again.”
I hope I was able to make a difference with some of the people I talked to. That was one of the things I really enjoyed about that job. Trying to help steer these guys onto a more productive path.
Didn’t anybody notice Michael Shannon as one of the young married couple
Oh nice! I just assume you’ve both seen every movie to exist 😅

It's been estimated that, in order to complete everything he does, he repeats the day for at least 133 years.

1: Sorry to hear about your mom. That would be a lovely day to revisit so you can spend time with her.
2: ......nice.
Many people have videos trying to calculate how many days are actually in this movie... Do you have a guess? :)

"why didn't Phil just stay up one night and see what actually happens at 6:00 am?"
He must have done -- how else would he know that the reset happens at 6am?
@@ClayLoomis1958
Wouldn't have changed anything.
@@wwoods66 if you Google it they say 1200 days 33years in loop
@1979kaoss
Google is wrong, dumbass.
It was ten years.
Great reaction and a great movie.
He's Fred.
Holy geeze we didn't even realize!!! 😳
It's very Doctor Who so we can get behind it, however for a normal person that would probably cause your mind to collapse.
@@LatetotheParty Personally, my headcanon is that the loops we saw in the movie are the only loops that happened, so Phil only relived the day 35 times. I know it's not true, but it's what I tell myself so I can enjoy the movie. 😅
