I live in Hohenwald (high forest mountain in German), just 5 miles from the memorial and go there often to walk the trails. The trace is a path worn by migrating animals (deer, buffalo) and Native Americans following the herds for 100s of years before Columbus. The encircled monument area is a pioneer graveyard, with stones dating back to the 1700's. The Memorial is a rest stop, picnic area and campground accessible from the Trace.
We enjoyed the natural surroundings. It was gorgeous. After the fact, we wished we had looked more closely at the pioneer cemetery. We were going to go back but we ran out of time.
