This song was made for her voice, my goodness. I've loved "Both Sides Now" for a long time, but listening to Mary sing it feels like hearing it for the first time all over again.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Mary could sing my grocery list, and I would weep. What an amazing voice, I have loved you since October project
😂😂😂this was really funny. Thanks for makingme smile again after crying tor her songs😅
Ditto 🙏
You know a true artist when they can take a song that has been covered by so many other great voices and can still make it sound like the song was written especially for her to sing.
In the era of female voices such as Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Lady Gaga, Miss Fahls voice is truly a hidden gem. I can listen to her 24/7.
She makes me cry every time I listen to this song and most October project lyrics. Bless her God!
Mary certainly has that emotion when she sings. A true blessing.
We live in an era of screeching X Factor Whitney wanabees who mistake shouting for power and yodelling for feeling. Listening to Mary Fahl should be compulsory.
AGREED
So true !
Totally agree!
So true. What a voice! Just perfect.
Agreed!
Mary Fahl has one of the lovliest voices I've heard, and she can truly interpret a song. Fabulous; equal to Judy Collins.
Yes, indeed!
This Joni Mitchell fan loves your rendition of this song! Beautifully done.
Even said she liked it.
She's the sun , her voice a celestial connection . And this song is perfect . Amazing .
Wonderful summation....words capture her perfectly.
She is amazing to me Loreena Mckennitt and Mary Fahl are the gold standard.
please make them platinum status,............. Theyre worth it !
She's so talented and amazing.
Indeed !
I would also add Annie Hazlett to that list
Absolutely!!
INCREDIBLE!! I've listened to music all my life, and out of every female singer I have ever heard, this lady is by far my very favorite!! She's unique!! She's brilliant in her arrangements, & execution of all her songs!! What a voice!! Thank you Mary!! Love You!!
Wow ! My friend just told me to listen to Mary and I picked this song. I am impressed. From the moment I heard her deep voice, I knew I was on to a new sound. I love her voice and the arrangement of the music is so fine. The video also is impressive, especially the black and white part with the kids riding around and the couple hugging, in love. Fantastic !
A beautiful woman with a stunningly beautiful voice! I find her performance here spellbinding!
I saw her play live once and she was astounding. Her voice is over the top beautiful.
Ditto.
I loved October Project. Mary has such a haunting, beautiful voice.
Still a beautiful face and voice Mary Fahl is a true gift to this generation and this planet.
In this galaxy with more than 100,000 light years in diameter a being with a velvet voice was born....!!!Hugs Mary Fall...
Omg I loved OP from the beginning and am a big Joni fan too and yet this is the first day hearing this amazing version! Thanks for posting. How did I miss this? It's such a perfect and natural fit for both song and artist.
loved her voice when she was in The October Project...so soothing and amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mary Fahl is one of my favourites. She has a melancholy voice which is unique and authoritative. Her words are sad but they inspire hope.
LOVE HER! Saw October many times.... She's brilliant!
She has a voice like an angel, and beauty to match.
Preciosa vos y muy hermosa interpretación, un saludo de Argentina!!!!
This is a voice that each era must have. As our listening shifts in a retro way, this music brings life into soulful folk music.
very nice indeed, sung with emotion !!!
I am glad that people have attention on this vocalist -- beautiful tone!
Robert Gold Gorgeous powerful voice she has.
Well said my man. I discovered Joni Mitchell recently as I forgot all about Both Sides Now. Came to find out several artists do a cover. Check out Hayley Westenra's version.
@@chrisschanzlin1289 It's a very different song when sung by older and younger singers, isn't it? But both can be excellent.
In Mary Fahl we finally hear someone who has the maturity to understand - and the ability to express - the full emotional depth of this song.
Bing Crosby also fits 2 a T.
“Finally”?!?
@@412tanner What's your favourite cover of this song?
@@Nea1wood th-cam.com/video/G1DuLmKxaSU/w-d-xo.html The Van Ronk version is actually called “Clouds.” He was only 31 when he recorded it in 1967, but he has the voice of a man in his eighties.
Mary Fahl is my absolute favorite female singer, but Joni did a great job with this song as well.
Wonderful voice Mary!
DEJLIG SANG OG BILLEDER
Tak, Thony. Due., du er en virkelig god billedmager. Flotte værker.
Jan Sognnes qw
I changed my mind, if I cant sing like Freddie Mercury,..Mary Fahls voice will make me happy as well. THAT sound that comes out of her mouth is UNREAL and so beautiful. Thank You Mary !!!!
The older I get, the more I appreciate this song. This is a brilliant rendition of this song and the images are perfect.
Keith Richards posted a month ago "The best female voice in the world !". The man certainly knows what he is talking about. "Love & Gravity" is amazing. "The Other Side of Time" is amazing. Her work with "October Project" is amazing. "From the Dark Side of the Moon" is f%#'ng amazing. Chicago Fan.
She has an amazing voice, but she's no October Project. Just like Dolores O'Riordan's solo stuff wasn't The Cranberries and Maire Brennan - who covered this song - isn't Clannad.
Thank you TH-cam for introducing me to this soulful version of a classic.
Mary, please consider singing Send in the Clowns. I think your voice is perfectly suited to that song.
I would love to hear her voice in this song too. When I was young I listened to Judy Collins. My tastes have matured, I am enchanted by Mary's voice. Choosing a beautiful song and making it great ... Mary you should cover it, you really should :)
Along the same lines I could easily hear her doing Children Will Listen from Into the Woods as well.
former lead singer of October Project? Why is this always after her name? Mary is a world class singer , yesterday is done and gone .
Her voice is incredible ! I felt it came from soul !
this song gets a new ethereal environment on mary's voice
she performs estremally emotionally and hole thing ,becomes something spiritual
conecting us with some bigger above us
and somehow this song gives me some hope!!!!
Absolutely beautiful, Mary. I've been an OP fan since I first heard you guys on WFUV in the early 1990's. While I'd love to see you together again, your solo stuff is fantastic. I've always loved the Mitchell Trio version of this song, but your rendition is beyond words.
"And if you care, don't let them know.
Don't give yourself away"
.
But I did care and they knew it. I gave myself away. Caring was my weakness and they destroyed me with it.
Gorgeous...and she looks a tad like Joni Mitchell in her younger days
Simply beautiful
One of my favorite songs -- I'm thrilled to have Mary singing it!
It's always dangerous covering an iconic song of a legendary singer, but you do Joni's song justice indeed. Bravo, Mary!
Wow great voice and rendition, very moving. Love the intonations.
I close my eyes. ......and I'm in heaven, peaceful, safe, loved.......thank you
Wow, amazing deep voice ! Beautiful
I used to think this song was far too saccharine, but not after hearing your version. Your voice and the new arrangement make it a far more poignant tune than the original.
I've had a flask of vodka but this is deeply emotional to me.
Best Female voice in the world !
+Keith Richards Stones To your ears yes. To the whole world, no. Saw her 2yrs, ago in a very small venue. She did this and a Pink Floyd cover as well. Just her and her acoustic guitar. Good show. She is your favorite female vocalist. So to YOU, this means she is the best.
And you should know! What a compliment to this angelic voice.
did not think anyone could come close to judy but dam this hits home this is big league
Mary, your voice gives me shivers and I think that's a good thing. I've loved the first October Project album since the day I first heard it. Love your cover of this classic.
Mary - this is the best cover of "Both Sides Now" I've ever heard. Mind-blowing performance with so much emotion. Love, love, love the new album.
Agree...
It's terrific, admittedly, but I prefer Vienna Teng's.
Just imagine if she sang this with Hayley Westenra...I think it'd be a very awesome duet.
That would be amazing!
The Joni MItchell version of this song never touched my heart as much as Mary Fahl's version; I'm a blubbering mess. Bless you, Ms. Fahl...
Mary Fahl
I found a
Symphony in a thimble,
Delicate and nimble.
A tempest in a gentle breeze.
A voice soul deep;
A range so wide.
Where I believe we could hear
A chorus of angels
If we could just hear her breathe.
Joni m would love this version or rendition, her voice just fits the depth and soul of this song
It doesn't get any better than Mary Fahl. From October Project to November Project, and her solo career....she stands out from all the rest. What a voice and interpreter of songs. GENIUS
One of the better covers of this song ... she seems to capture the true mix of emotions in this song. Really nice job. Sung as a ballad, not a showcase for a voice but a display of emotional understanding of a song's underpinnings.
Another cover from her. Need some original material.
I love this interpretation - thank you so much !
Sweet. Published on my birthday 2013. A favorite song. A favorite singer. Perfect gift every time I hear it.
Makes my day to find this beautiful version
Powerfully done. The last verse brought tears to my eyes....i'm going in for another listen
Wish October Project would get together again for a tour!
Amazing, amazing, amazing... Beautiful voice...
literally brought me to tears, so moving, so beautiful, amazing
Just a beautiful version...amazing voice
manchmal wünsche ich mir, man könnte diese Musik malen !
I love Mary she’s so great what a super great voice
Stunning version. Thanks for the wonderful video.
A Facebook friend of mine listened to my new release "Find Your Way" and compared my voice to Mary's, which is a supreme compliment as Mary's voice is so rich and beautiful.
Muy muy muy bonita interpretacion. Desde Argentina, gracias Mary, por tanta belleza.
Linda, voz encantadora ❤️
The best version I've heard of this great song for sure...Wonderful!
just saw a concert from her on t.v.,,loved It.,,amazing.
I saw her at a concert! She was amazing! She has such an amazing voice! I will always be a fan! I also love October Project's songs! They are so good!
By golly I think this may be the best version of "Both sides now". Sacrilege, I know.
totally stunning - the great lady would certainly approve IMHO
Gorgeous song and performance. Thank you for sharing your magnificent voice with us.
I've always loved this song, philosophic and a little realistic melancholy. I've listened to a few covers and it's hard to capture that sense of the song but I feel you get more than the simple words. Really enjoyed your rendition and added that wonderful quality of your unique voice.
SO beautifully done!!
This performance is literally outstanding💚🍀💚 Mary has done Joni proud here
Love it so much
I have a whole wish list of songs I would love to hear Mary Fahl do:
Barbara Allen
The Sound of Silence
Bright Eyes
Into the West
America the Beautiful
The Star Spangled Banner
...just to name a few
And there it was and is (and by far surpasses what you ever could expect); that immense masterpiece of Joni Mitchell .... Since the year 2000 she 's been singing her own song in such an unparalleled stunningly beautiful way. She wrote about the existential essence of life. And having such a virtual retrospective in mind as a young woman is amazing. She has matched the lyrics to the melody in such an exceptional way .... Lyrics which try to grasp the inability why we live.. And so we rock and sway on the golf slag of love, hope, loss, expectations. ..and all this sweet bitterness. And eventual a day comes where the illusions of our personal infinity or greatness is over.
And who talks about Joni... has to talk about Judy. Because it was Judy Collins( in 1965)who gives this song it recognition widely all over the world. (Judy with crystal clear voice was on her best on the piano in 1987.)
We heard someone singing this melody in such a humble and lovely way in the earlier seventies.... I didn't know who the performer was....I didn't' know the man's name...That warm unique voice accompanied by a bit of tristesse … a voice and soul ready to forgive … Julio Bernardo Euson, a bit divine .. He was young and relatively unknown....So he hadn't any special means or recourses at his disposal....
I've always loved the version done especially by Roger Whittaker. And I like that exquisite rendition of Glen Campbell.
And don't forget that wonderful extra verse by Pete Seeger:"Daughter, daughter...."
We have to look at all these versions as complementary renditions. Not as competitors of each other. No one is going for an Olympic medal. So after all these years I created my own list of renditions which are moving up my soul..
Recently I added Mary Fahl to that list. She feels it in such a poignant way. And that deep "bronze" voice of her gives such an enrichment ... And of course Sara Bareilles...she is so talented....an amazing voice and such a great artist.
But I've loved many performances of this song.... Name it!...And it isn't important who sings it the best... that doesn't matter. The important is the quality... by bringing it in such a honestly way that you could feel the different approach in contemplating about the subject.... And the "thrill" is in the discovering of the different way of ventilating these feelings. That makes it so intriguing.
I would like to bring this great version to your attention!... Marc Jordan - Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell Cover) .. A very special rendition! So intriguing. I got a bit mesmerized.
I love you, Mary. This song is very special for me,,but in your voice, I broke in tears. Thanks a lot.
For me, the best artist that sang a versión of this song, Is Joni Mitchell herself. You can hear her simphonic version on her 2000 album "Both Sides Now". But Mary Fahl s versión, comes close. A standing ovation. I do have October Project s first CD, and do like it very much.
Oh Mary any chance you might compose Amazing Grace to the melody of Oh Danny Boy. I've heard once in church when observing St Patrick's day as it fell on a Sunday. It was tough holding back the tears when I heard from the choir leading to the offertory.
Wow. Best version I've heard yet and I've heard 5 including several different versions by Joni. I think her best version was the 1970 live version. Over 6 million views > PJHARV1
I never really -- I mean REALLY -- understood this song/felt it in my bones until I heard Mary sing it. Now? I'm slain by it. What a marvelous cover this is!
Your high feelings singing come to our senses and we can feel together with you every word and every song´s note... Music made this way cleans the souls with the breeze of your breath... You make us partners of the beauty you deliver.
I've never heard of this lady, but what a lovely voice, a beautiful rendition of a truly moving and thought provoking song.
Check her out in the band October Project. She was on the first two albums back in the 90s. Just amazing. My first experience was the song, "Return to Me". Just haunting and amazing. Cheers
Both Sides Now....Mary Fahl
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere,
I've looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun,
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done,
But clouds got in my way.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels,
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real,
I've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show,
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know,
Don't give yourself away.
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really…
Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds,
I've looked at life that way.
Oh but now old friends they're acting strange,
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
First time I heard return to me I thought it was ENYA OR ANNIE LENNOX SINGING! MARY is a super great singer to be in same category of both those ladies
Sorry, if my english's not ferfect. I've heard you in "God and Generals". Take me home , this voice, I was flashed
..
I heard this song in a movie. Joni Mitchell's lyrics are brilliant but I found both her versions sounded sad. The other 365 versions on TH-cam didn't do it for me either. Then, I found Mary Fahl's and loved it. Naturally, I had to look into October Project. Had I been living under a rock... that I missed a band with such an amazing lead singer? After watching a number of their videos, I think Mary Fahl is better off on her own. Let's hope she does a few more covers until an aspiring songwriter gives her a gem to perform.
She is amazing - oddly enough I don't care for all her songs, but I cannot detract from her voice regardless. I hate that there's always the parenthetical "Former Lead Singer of October Project." I had never heard of October Project until after I discovered her, and if I'm not mistaken, she's been doing solo work longer than she was with October Project. It's silly to keep identifying her as the former lead when she has so much great music as simply, Mary Fahl.
Great job.
How great in your career to revisit this song that touched us so intimately that at times it feels like a kiss. I sometimes think I could be lost in a field anywhere just listening to this song and others just like them unapologetically loud, swimming in the vibrations of love, loss and surrender. Letting go of the new and the old and be content with the simplest songs there are. I don't need to move fast anymore, I need the space this song create for me. Your journey as a singer, songwriter and song partner has come full circle and I really appreciate your songs from Both Sides Now to October Project. Love to you and your life work. xo
You made me cry......
You know, i ws listening to my old Octuber Project CD, and loving those greats songs, and I say....eyyy where would Mary be nowadays...lets google her...here i am
Mary was brilliant with October Project but is AMAZING solo. Love her voice so much.
Incredible.
