    Best part is the movie is only 102 minutes long. Yet it still has in depth world building, multiple memorable characters, satirical comedy inserts, character development, a complex plot, and several action set pieces. Nothing is wasted and it has one of the best hard close endings ever.

    The decision to shoot on location in Dallas was also important in giving the movie that Cyberpunk feel, especially the night scenes. The Steel Mill in Pittsburgh was a great location too. Even though some matte paintings were used in the Dallas shots, those windy, multi level freeways surrounding the downtown cluster of skyscrapers looks great on film eg: the night scenes when Robo goes on his first mission, the backdrop in the scene with the two thugs cutting the blonde woman's hair, the window views from inside the OCP tower, the scene with Emil at the gas station with Robo looking down at while on the freeway, the backdrop behind Murphy as he's spinning his pistol while Louis drinks her coffee and the early vehicle pursuit with Clarence and his gang. You can see how Houston in Robocop 2 doesn't have the same feel as Dallas.

    Robocop is one of those rare film concepts that has the trappings of a B-Movie idea, but manages to be legit in getting more than just goofy thrills out of it because of well placed pathos. Much of Verhoven is like that, and I'd give props to films like Midnight Run, Headhunters, Grosse Point Blank, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Dope, First Love, True Lies, Much of Mad Max in general all just to name a few films that went beyond just being a basic fun time by also giving some good drama/comedy to latch onto to make it truly stand out.

    By Verhoeven's own admission, he used the themes of crucifixion and resurrection (namely Murphy's) to give the film a universal appeal, even having Robocop seemingly walk on water near the end. He also shot him from low angles to deify him. Such a brilliant and talented director that made a $13 million movie look 4 times more expensive. He knew how to block and stage action so the audience always had a sense of geography (the warehouse shoot-out is a perfect example), contrasting the fast, confusing cutting of today. And one genius thing he did which no other Robocop film has done since was to give Robocop an low electronic hum whenever he's on screen, giving us the sense that he's a machine. Just brilliant.

    • @m1lst3r89
      @m1lst3r89 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah the shootout in warehouse is largely chaotic in nature. If you imply that geography in action scenes (and in that one) was awfully important, you'd be wrong.

    Pretty cool the house scene is what sold Verhoeven. One of the most powerful scenes in the movie, emotional as heck and really sells the struggle of the ghost of Alex Murphy locked in the metal shell of Robocop. One of the greatest 80s movie (the only reason its not is the stiff competition from the likes of The Terminator, BTTF, Aliens and more) and just plain one of the great movies of all times. Sadly I doubt we'll ever get something new in the series to match RC1 or even 2 but I am looking forward to the new video game made by the same people who did the recent-ish Terminator Resistance which while a flawed game I felt captured the spirit and feel of Terminator better the most movies or games in that series.

    I think Emil Anthonovsky played by Paul McCrane had the most brutal death of the movie because he was bathed in chemical waste so badly he was literally melting and he didn't die fast he walked around the factory searching for help till he got ran off, ouch that was brutal.
    In case you're wondering no, a human body wouldn't react that way to chemical waste, it would probably get badly burned, all depending on the kind of chemicals.

    To JB's question on the Amazon remake; it's not a matter of if it'll be bad, it's how bad. They've already shown with LotR that compelling plots, character development, and respect for the source material are not their strong suit.

      One major (albeit, obvi to me at least) problem of an “Amazon” reboot take of RC, would be that BIG CORP Villain aspect, as there’s no way in hell, that Jeff Bezos would approve of one of his own BEHEMOTH monopolistic corporations, of outright ruthless greed-based bad capitalism, portraying any characterization of the likes of himself, as the reboots’ villain architect. Would more likely be done in the over-the-top, totally ridiculous Michal Bay style… a nonstop, noisy, excessively violent-for-no-specific-reason, steaming pile of 💩

      And Nancy Allen played a gritty female police officer without needing to be an unrealistic, "I can kick Robocop's arse" girl boss as well.

    Theres just something about the presentation of it all.
    It could’ve been the cheesiest, least dangerous feeling film you’d expect from that era.
    But the whole package is presented in a nearly timeless way.

    Love the end credits here. Good job! Saw Robocop in the theater upon release. Still an all time fave. Never saw any sequels or remakes.

      I loved Robocop so much I got the DVD, sequels…not so much. I can think of one big way to improve 2, even as a kid I thought “Well, why didn’t they do that, would have improved movie and gave climax more emotional depth”?

    • @Ometecuhtli
      @Ometecuhtli ปีที่แล้ว

      The original one is the only worth your time anyway. The sequel was incosistent as hell, tries to be serious in some moments and in others you have an indestructible brain, Benny Hill-esque show of Robocop 2s, the kid's my son's age non-sense. People like it for its action but there really isn't much there and it's not well paced. And 3 brings back Poledouris' music, which is pretty much why you should listen to the OST instead of watching the movie.

    Me and my friend went to go see the Eddie Murphy stand up comedy movie when it came out. They played the trailer for Robocop before the show, and we couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous the idea was.
    Robocop? He stupid was Hollywood?
    When it came out, we went to go see it. Holy shit... This was a bad ass movie!! And I was blown away at how they did the makeup when Robocop took off his helmet, and you saw his human face and robotic back end of it.
    I still whistle the theme song, usually on a Saturday morning, when I'm heading out the door and I'm on my way to get shit done. Yard work, fixing the house up, working on the cars... Dead or alive, they're getting done.

    Robocop is such a fantastic film.
    One of the issues that the reboot had to try and overcome (along with the nostalgia factor) is that in 2014 the satire shown in the original had become, or was at least well on its way to becoming real-world reality. Because of that the reboot lost something the original had when the line between what was satirical was now factual.

    "Your Move, Creep." Often imitated but never equalled. Paul Verhoeven first Hollywood movie 🍿 is still the greatest movie of al time. Ironically even Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for the part, but turned it down. It did Impress him a lot that he got Verhoeven to make his 2nd Hollywood movie the ultra violent Total Recall with him as the lead

    I absolutely refuse to watch the remake especially after I saw they changed Murphy's death scene to a car explosion. His death was such a memorable scene. How are you gonna water it down like that? Such a soft society these days.
