I am also a QUILTer and have to say..at age 72, and having been a cross stitcher since the age 7 (with lots of help from my Grandmother, and older sister), I am not a techy person, my phone is my only high tech item, so I need paper patterns. A QUILT (which I do with or without patterns) is what I equally enjoy. But I am one of those people that is always afraid of doing "specialty stitches". You have encouraged me to try some as I have found out that I have already been doing some without ever knowing they were "special"!!!😮 Anyhow...I do so enjoy watching you. Your work is so very beautiful and precise. And thank you for sharing your beauty with all of us!
Oh thank you for watching! Wow that’s 65 years of stitching! Such skill and wisdom you must have :) I’m happy to hear you are going to give the “specialty” stitches a go! Some are even easier than cross stitch, think about satin stitch! It doesn’t get easier than that!
Great first floss tube of 2025! I have a chatelaine that I am kiting up slowly, those silks are beautiful, but oh so, pricey! The alpaca Poncho is beautiful perfect shade of blue.❤
Thank you so much! Those silks are gorgeous, but definitely make you think twice before you add all of them to your cart! I’m still purchasing my NPIs…
Thank you for tuning in today! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and I love hearing you have an owl nearby :) over the years we’ve had quite a few here as well, it’s always nice to relax in the hot tub at night and hear them hooting away!
Audrey here! I was stitching on a piece of 46 ct as I watched your video and my perception is that 56 doesn't have any more irregularities than 46 or 40 but the imperfections simply appear larger because those stitches on 56 are so darn small! Personally I love the imperfections in linen because it proves that it's a natural product and makes each piece unique. And really after it's all said and done your Elizabeth Furniss will look spectacular and no one will notice if Eve has a little belly on her! 😉
I totally agree - the imperfections in linen add to the charm! It's part of what makes hand-stitching so special. 🙂 I’m just such a perfectionist TRYING to let it all go lol
I’m enjoying the Chatelaine so much, it’s such a fun piece! I hope you’re enjoying your stitching too and you feel inspired to stitch on your chatelaine!!
@@FibersandFlossCanada I have been! I think this might be a Chatelaine weekend for me. I've been thinking about nothing else since I last worked on it 😁
Thank you!!! Isn’t it a fun chatelaine? Can I ask you this, have you chosen to beat as you go or are you saving that to the end? I always say beating till the end but this time I think I’m going to do it as I go….
Enjoy your Chatelaine! Martina’s colors are fabulous. Many years ago I was lucky to take a few of her classes with her as the teacher. I miss that. It did make it easier to understand the instructions. They are fun!
Oh wow! What an amazing experience that must have been! I’m really enjoying it so far and love how she broke down the pattern into assignments with specific instructions :)
Happy new Year, all the best of everything for you and your loved ones 😊. I love Owl, it is so cute and the beautiful poncho. Thank you so much for your generosity. Happy stitching 🪡🧵💐
Lovely video Arica! Don’t forget to make a Ravelry project page for your slippers 😉. The owl forest pattern is pretty, we get tons of cardinals at our bird feeder and bushes. The poncho is gorgeous, alpaca yarn is my favorite for my lace shawl knitting.
I enjoy your videos and your stitching is beautiful. Thank you for showing your slippers as I also knit and I think these would be great for my girls. The poncho is gorgeous. Have a great week 😀
❤. Love all your projects. Excited about 2025 stitching Owl project is awesome 🤩 and quilt is lovely 🥰. I’m a crocheter. Knitting is a mystery to me but maybe someday??? The poncho is a work of art ❤
Thanks so much and I hope you enjoy the year of stitching ahead! You should dappling in knitting, it shares many of the same concepts as crochet and you will do well with it :)
Awesome video as always! We lived in Grande Forks BC and there was an alpaca farm there and we bought wonderful items from them as gifts for our girls. That poncho is absolutely beautiful! My grandma was always knitting slippers for our family and they looked very similar to your Ravelry slippers. She used Phentex which I believe is still available. My grandsons now are asking for me to knit them up for them! Traditions.... Owl. Quilt.
That’s lovely! I have to say, I picked up some Phentax about 15 years ago to also make some slippers my mother in law used to knit and that stuff was horrid! It hurt my fingers and it was so rough I never even finished a pair… it’s so nice when we can make special things for our family and keep the tradition alive, just maybe with new materials :)
What a great start to 2025! I will need to get a calendar of some kind to recorded my days stitching, my Wips and best of all the ability to strike out finished projects. How rewarding! I am a list girl. I love your 56 count project and look forward to watching your progress. I am in the Canada Swaps again this round and excited to work on my project to send off The poncho looks so warm and cozy. Owls are a hoot
Oh hi Betty!! I’m excited to participate again now that I know what to expect ;) whole book of days is fun, really any journal will do. Crossing off lists feels sooooo good!
I always enjoy your flosstube episodes. I'm really looking forward to your flosstubiversity. I would love to be able to stitch faster. I love the cardinals on the owl Forrest piece. And that alpaca poncho is stunning! It must feel like wearing a cloud.
I agree with the comment about the specialty stitches. They really are just other stitches and they enhance a project so much! That is quite the undertaking for your first 56 count but with lighting and magnification it sounds like it should be an enjoyable stitch.
It’s crazy that I’ve never tried it before, it’s so smooth! I think you’re right about the lighting and magnification - that is key! Thanks for tuning in today :)
Arica I love your Floss tube videos and look forward to seeing when you post a new video. Love your generosity. Owl, quilt and poncho all look so wonderful.
Your Chatalaine is looking great! I want to do Alpine Seasons someday. I love Owl Forest Embroidery. I'm currently hosting a year-long SAL called #ofefridaysal, where every Friday we pull out our OFE wips and work on them. That shall is amazing. I have tried knitting with alpaca, for me, it's a lot like working with mohair. It's so soft, though. I'd love to have a poncho made of it. Maybe even a quilt. I'm looking forward to your upcoming flosstube on stitching faster. We can always learn new things.😄
Alpine Seasons is such a lovely pattern, you’ll have to post a picture once you start it! While I have my 100 owls (where I’m changing the pattern), I’m dying to start a new OFE - which one are you working on?
Wonderful episode as always. You have so many beautiful projects that I love to see your progress on. I had never seen the cardinal Owl Forest Embroidery pattern before your channel - its so beautiful! Good luck with all your stitchy plans ... happy stitching!
Your chatelaine is looking amazing! So cool that it's already broken down into sections for you! Love that. Those tiny stitches are amazing. Makes me wanna try higher counts!
I'm enjoying it so much, it's going to be a fun one to stitch! And you should try a 56, I’m REALLY enjoying it now. It took me a minute to get used to it but now I LOVE it!
I love birds of all kinds and those cardinals in the Owl Forest design would be beautiful - love the pillow. Quilts are something I would like to try doing in the next few years. Living in Winnipeg I need an alpaca poncho!!🤣😁🥰
I'd like to, also, do the Garden Club series... (fingers crossed) I look forward to watching your progress on that, as well as your other projects. ~ That poncho looks SO comfy!
Hi Arica EEK 56 count 😮 I love the stitchers at the library and am going to investigate if any library’s near me are doing that. I am going to learn how to knit soon! I was going to try and learn from you tube but found out a lady at my local bead store teaches beginner knitting at the bead store. So February 1st I am going to try her class 🤞🏼 Love your floss tube ❤ I want to start a chatelaine but will finish my Carolyn Manning first I think Congratulations Tara on the yarn shop!!’
I very much enjoyed your flosstube today. All of your WIPS are so pretty. I have one HATS chart and linen but still need to get thread. So hopefully soon I can start on my first HATS chart. Owl, Poncho
Great video! I agree about the used term “specialty stitches” they are just stitches we may not have learned yet. RSN (Royal School of Needlework) has a wonderful stitch bank that is free to access for those who may not be aware. Thank you for sharing the slipper pattern, I can’t seem to knit slippers fast enough for my sons and their families so it is nice to try a new pattern. Poncho Christmas Birds
Yes I should have mentioned the stitch bank! It is such a great resource :) so lovely to have someone in the family stitching slippers, what lovely gifts!
I saw a beautiful pattern in a second hand shop of a tulip pattern with specialty stitches, I hesitated, then purchased it today. Glad you mentioned about the specialty stitches.. I will need all the encouragement I can get.lol. Owl,Quilt.
Wonderful! You will do great! As we age we need to learn new things and this is a perfect opportunity for you! You got this and if you need help there’s so many tutorials on TH-cam too!
Great video! Love all the inspiration & info. Need to make some new slippers! Love the owl pillow. Had wondered about putting a cross stitch with fabric for a bigger pillow. Good to see how you did it. The blue poncho is lovely. Happy stitching…Carol
Beautiful stitching as always. You were my inspiration to start "inspired by nature" last year. I'm hoping to finish it before 2025 is over. I love the look of the two fabrics but boy was it harder than it looked. I love alpaca garments. I have a lovely sweater that it is cold enough to wear here in Arkansas about 3 times each year. I think next week will be one of those times. Again thank you for the time you spend doing the videos. I lov
I just LOVE the start to your Chatelaine!! I have mine ordered for my birthday start next month 🤞🏻🤞🏻 it gets here in time. Poncho … color combo is beautiful Looking forward to university next week 😊
Lovely stitches. I did make it into the swap and I’m so excited and I have picked my stitch! There are few flosstubers doing different blackbird series and I want on the wagon! poncho
I was so happy to see you had put up a video. I’m working on a quilt but I might have to put an owl on it. I live in Southern California and I could use some warm clothes since I’m going to Colorado to visit my son and I hear it will be cold. I could really use the poncho. I’ve already gone to ravelry to make myself some slippers and I have a chatelaine all kitted up I might have to start it,
I think specialty stitches are those stitches aside from the basic cross stitch. We call them specialty stitches in needlepoint also…those stitches aside from the basic basketweave stitch. 😊
I just ordered my first Chatelaine. I can't wait to get it. I got the Hawaiian Garden...lots of color. (Then again, ALL my purchases are 'firsts' as I'm still working on my first ever cross stitch. It's a Bothy Christmas Victorian Boot. Sooo relaxing and therapeutic, which I desperately needed.)
Hi Arica - it was me who said that to Samantha about specialty stitches at one of our Guild meetings and it bothers me that people get scared off from expanding their horizons. Cross stitch is one style of embroidery, canvas that you talked about is another style, blackwork is another style - it is just a straight stitch after all that goes one way and comes back the other way to fill the gaps of the running stitch. No brainer!!
YES! Thank you Nicole :) you are so right! Even here ppl have commented admitting they have been scared off by the term specialty and now are willing to dive in and give them a go :) Thank you for sparking this conversation :)
What a wonderful opportunity to win the CrossStitch pattern. I just got back to CrossStitch after many years and would love to stitch this pattern. Owl
Found your channel a few months ago, enjoy your videos😊. The smallest I’ve stitched so far is 28 count.. not that brave lol, but would love to stitch the OWL
28 count is def easier on the eyes than a 56! I also have projects on 28. At the end of the day it’s nice to have a variety of sizes to choose from where you can stitch what you feel you have the capacity for that day. Thank you so much for tuning in and happy stitching!
I have a pattern that has "specialty" stitches on it and I tried some on the fabric that I'll be using for the stitch and it's a bit nerve wracking. I will take your advice and practice on another piece of fabric. Amazing shawl.
Practice makes perfect! You will do great and then wonder why you put it off ;) It’s easier than it looks and if you have any troubles just look for a tutorial on TH-cam for the specific stitch!
I am stitching a fox who is not wearing a poncho. When I get around to stitching an owl, I probably won’t give her a poncho either. Currently stitching 1/1 on 28 count something. I don’t like this though it does look good. My eyes are too old for this size.😅 Please explain what a châtelaine is.
Thank you for tuning in! You should stitch whichever count is easiest on your eyes :). Key for us is to really enjoy what we stitch as there’s only so much time to stitch! I wish there was more but….
You stitch such lovely pieces. Your knitting is cute also. Slippers are such useful gifts to make. I will look forward to seeing your presentation on stitching faster. OWL. PONCHO. I would offer to pay postage if I am chosen since I live in the states.
I love owl forest and I love that poncho! Great video!
Lovely start to your flosstube videos for 2025.😊 The Owl Forest embroidery looks like a fun stitch. The Poncho looks amazing!
Thank you so much for tuning in today!
Thanks for a great first video for 2025. Owl Quilt
Another great video. And that poncho...gorgeous!
Arica, I totally agree…specialty stitches are just embroidery stitches with the cross stitch mindset. Everything is possible. 🪡🧵🦉🇨🇦
Absolutely! They shouldn’t hold a stitcher back from trying a new pattern :)
I am also a QUILTer and have to say..at age 72, and having been a cross stitcher since the age 7 (with lots of help from my Grandmother, and older sister), I am not a techy person, my phone is my only high tech item, so I need paper patterns. Thank you so much! Those silks are gorgeous, but definitely make you think twice before you add all of them to your cart! I’m still purchasing my NPIs…
Love watching fellow Canadian cross stitchers. That Poncho looks absolutely beautiful!
Thanks so much! I hope you get in some good stitchy time this week:)
Arica I just love watching all your flosstubes. We have a Barred owl living in a tree near us.I think the Poncho is absolutely stunning.
Thank you for tuning in today! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and I love hearing you have an owl nearby :) over the years we’ve had quite a few here as well, it’s always nice to relax in the hot tub at night and hear them hooting away!
Love the owl forest chart. The quilt is another favorite. I am also excited to see the progress on the Chatelaine.
Thank you so much and good luck on the draws :)
I always look forward to your flosstubes. Can’t wait for your video on stitching more efficiently. Owl and Poncho
Thank you so much! The efficiency video is in the works. I am excited for it, and hope you are too!
Audrey here! Oh that poncho would keep me warm in my chilly office. It is gorgeous. Nice start on your Chateleine.
Thanks! It's such a cozy poncho and I am looking forward to giving it to a stitcher to enjoy its coziness and warmth!
Lovely Flosstube as usual! Lovely shawl and I always love Owl Forest’s patterns!
Happy New Year! Thanks for tuning in today - I laughed when I saw your IG post as I decided to give up on the catching up this week too!
Thank you so much for shouting out my flosstube Arica! I'm so impressed with your Chatelaine and Elizabeth Furniss progress. They both look amazing 😍

I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! I love how owls are so unique and love that they are part of your nature 😊
Lovely to see your stitching Arica! That Chatelaine is the same one I picked for myself and started a few years ago, and I love it!

Thanks for the slipper pattern recommendation. Love the poncho

I think specialty stitches are those stitches aside from the basic cross stitch. We call them specialty stitches in needlepoint also…those stitches aside from the basic basketweave stitch. 😊

Thanks for watching! I’d love to see your red sampler! You should use the #hatsoffto2025 so we can see it :)
Gorgeous stitching as always! I’m sorry I won’t get to see you on the 25th. I’d love to see you demonstrate satin stitches. Owl and poncho. 😊
Yes I’m sorry to be missing you too on the 25th but I will be at the February one and I’m hosting a lunch Feb 22 if you would like to come?

Cross stitch is one style of embroidery, canvas that you talked about is another style, blackwork is another style - it is just a straight stitch after all that goes one way and comes back the other way to fill the gaps of the running stitch. No brainer!!
YES! Thank you Nicole :) you are so right! Even here ppl have commented admitting they have been scared off by the term specialty and now are willing to dive in and give them a go :) Thank you for sparking this conversation :)
@@FibersandFlossCanada so happy to see that we are convincing people to try their hand at it.
What a wonderful opportunity to win the CrossStitch pattern. I just got back to CrossStitch after many years and would love to stitch this pattern. Owl
Thank you for tuning in today :) Good luck to you on the pattern!
Oh my gosh that poncho ❤ I want to visit that farm ! It would be quite a trip from Mew Mexico though
lol that it would be!
I enjoy your videos!!! Owl
Thank you for tuning in today! 😊
I saw those slippers and had to go download the pattern! :-)
Great! They are so easy and knit up quickly :) I hope you enjoy them!!
❤❤❤❤
I am stitching a fox who is not wearing a poncho. When I get around to stitching an owl, I probably won’t give her a poncho either.
Currently stitching 1/1 on 28 count something. I don’t like this though it does look good. My eyes are too old for this size.😅
Please explain what a châtelaine is.
Thank you for tuning in! You should stitch whichever count is easiest on your eyes :). Key for us is to really enjoy what we stitch as there’s only so much time to stitch! I wish there was more but….
Poncho
You stitch such lovely pieces. Your knitting is cute also. Slippers are such useful gifts to make. I will look forward to seeing your presentation on stitching faster. OWL. PONCHO. I would offer to pay postage if I am chosen since I live in the states.
Thank you for your lovely comments Linda! Should you win, I’m happy to pay the postage :) good luck!
