I was in xc in high school and 23 is really slow
I imagine he was. I'm an somewhat serious competitive distance runner and I can pretty comfortably maintain a 7 minute mile (4:20 km) pace for much longer than a 5k. And I'm not at all unique. My friends who run in college can pretty comfortably maintain 6:30 pace for the same distances.

I really like how JJ is pushing his friends trying to make them better. I think him doubting you will make you even more motivated, it was not really about the money, it was about beating JJ and getting his respect and props as well as no one on the internet will make fun of him for jokes (especially JJ).

As an xc run, i can say that running is one of the mentally and physically hardest things a human can do. Big props to you for staying determined. I went from a 19;59 to a 18;51 3 mile this season and it was verrrry much a mental battle more than a physical battle

Some people (I repeat, some) sometimes work better when they're being mocked, kind of like it's a challenge. I remember being made fun of by my classmates back in high school because my mouth was always open. It really hurt my feelings, but I ended up fixing that problem, and in a weird way, I appreciate what they did. Although, I wouldn't do that to other people, friends or not, at least that's how I'd like to think I am.
