I can’t really put my finger on why I feel this way but there’s something so authentic about all of your choices. All great records. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so happy to see Beatles for Sale. I never would have guessed that would be on the list in 100 years but I love what you had to say about it. There is a ache in Lennon’s voice that speaks to the pain of his early years. It’s wonderful that you point it out.
amen. i can only only guess what a 28 year old buddy holly would have sounded like in 1964 but lennon's singing on the songs you mention is perfect even when he himself hated it and i enjoy little else more than him from 63 to 68. orbison is a serious runner up.
same here, I am a lifelong Beatles fan, my favourite albums would be Revolver and Abbey Road. But the Beatles for Sale is the album I play when I just want to listen to the 'Beatles'. I should be more articulate, but since the Beatles themselves weren't extremely articulate but merely 'pure' at that time, I feel I don't need to.
Beatles for Sale is my first every purchase of a Beatles album when I was a kid. I still like it for the excellent Lennon/McCartney orginals, but some of the cover versions just don't do it for me anymore. It definitely has all the signs of a rush job to get some product out there, but even with that stipulation its still pretty damn good. It wouldn't be my go-to Beatles album at this time.
let me know when you're releasing anything half as good as "mr. moonlight" (providing you sing like john lennon) and i'll buy a copy in every format for everyone on my block.@@simonhodgetts6530
Your list is fantastic! Here are my picks: Sgt. Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pet Sounds, Who‘s Next, Wish You Were Here, The Stranger, Aja, So, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Let It Bleed, Synchronicity Honorable mention: Hounds Of Love
Thank you! Mr. Moonlight is so good. That opening howl and the wonky keyboard solo is so good. The opening salvo of Beatles For Sale is so good and the rest of the album is great too.
Lately I've been playing The Beatles Second Album. I've never played a Nick Cave solo album. Notorious Byrd Brothers and Beggars Banquet are my favorites.
Beatles for Sale is really such and underrated album in their catalog. The original numbers such as "No Reply", "I'm a Loser", "Every Little Thing" & "What you're Doing" reveal a real growth in sophistication and emotional power. The Notorious Byrds Brothers is the Byrds masterpiece and one of the great landmark psychedelic albums of the era.
Talk Talk: Spirit Of Eden Lou Reed: New York Fleetwood Mac: Bare Trees Uriah Heep: Demons and Wizards Nick Drake: Bryter Layter The Who: Who's Next Moby Grape: first album Frightened Rabbit: Midnight Organ Fight Jimi Hendrix: Cry of Love Groundhogs: Split I do love me some Liege and Lief! I agree with you on Sandy Denny's voice. Also love Kate Bush. Cheers
My top ten 1. Jj Cale ‘naturally’ 2. John Mayan & the blues breakers. 3. Boz scaggs ‘come on home’. 4. Allman Bros band ‘live at Fillmore east’. 5. Bob Dylan ‘blood on the tracks’ 6. Velvet underground. 7. Neil young ‘after the gold rush. 8. Fleetwood Mac ‘Fleetwood Mac’. 9. Tony joe white ‘home made ice cream. 10. Bettye lavette ‘things have changed.
Was in one of my locals the next day after this post and happened to see a “notorious Byrd Brothers” first press stereo in VG shape for 10 bucks and grabbed it based on this reco. For whatever reason.. Never had it or even listened to it. So glad I did. Only one listen and it might be my fav of theirs. (Right now at least.). Thank you, Mazzy.
Great list, Mazzy! Thanks for coloring each one with your insight. Here's my Ten Go-To Records List (in no particular order): Ammonia Avenue - Alan Parsons Project (1984, Arista Records) Oranges and Lemons - XTC (1989, Virgin Records) Teatro - Willie Nelson (1998, Island Records) Deep in the Blues - James Cotton (1996, Verve Records) Lonely Runs Both Ways - Alison Krauss & Union Station (2004, Rounder Records) Car Wheels on a Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams (1998, Mercury Records) Angel Dust - Faith No More (1992, Reprise Records) Eight Arms to Hold You - Veruca Salt (1997, Outpost Records / Geffen) Kid A - Radiohead (2000, Parlophone Records / Capitol) Especially For You - The Smithereens (1986, Enigma Records)
Beatles for Sale my favourite Beatle Album oh yeah on my list has to be Gerry Rafferty Baker Street🌟 Gilbert o Sullivan 1971 album Himself 🌟James Taylor One man Dog 🌟David Gray White Ladder🌟 Billy Fury The Sound of Fury 1960🌟
I loved your choices ... So similar to my most played. Sandy Denny my all time favourite female singer .."No End" just blows me away every time.. Thank you for your super vids...
I'm 53 so I grew up in the 80s , but I got into the Beatles because of watching your channel years ago! I'd like to thank you, because that got me down a "rabbit hole" of all different kinds of interesting music of all genre's! 😊🎉
You nailed the commentary on the Who Sell Out! That is my experience with this album also. If these were the only 10 albums a person owned, I don’t think that would be so bad. Certainly, I could live with it!
Excellent list. Mine are: Something Else (KInks), White Album (Beatles), Strange Days (Doors), Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan), POB (John Lennon), His Hand in Mine (Elvis), Blonde on Blonde (Bob Dylan), American Music (The Blasters), Manassas (Manassas), & Very Best of Cream (Cream),
Interesting list. My twelve go-to albums are slightly similar but totally different: “I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight” - Richard & Linda Thompson “If I Could Only Remember My Name” - David Crosby “The White Album” - The Beatles “Hergest Ridge” - Mike Oldfield “A Sensual World” - Kate Bush “Blows Against the Empire” - Paul Kantner “Burgers” - Hot Tuna “Melt” - Peter Gabriel The Best of the Guess Who “Atom Heart Mother” -Pink Floyd “Let it Bleed” - Rolling Stones “Hejira” - Joni Mitchell
I could enjoy visiting your house.... I'd pick The Chrome Nun & Hokey Pokey & Steven Still's over David. BUT it's ALL personal choice & I've had friend's infulence me in to some odd music. Amon Dull 2, SAHB & Edgar Broughton Band.
I felt inspired, Norman - to reply with my 10 records I listen to the most. This is not in any order. 1. Court & Spark - Joni Mitchell - I suppose most people prefer her more folk based albums. But , I just love the orchestra with her voice. I really enjoy the oboes, flute and french horns that are showcased on this album. 2. The Juliet Letters- Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet - I have the CD. Picked it up in the $2 bin. What a beautiful album about the many facets of love. The quartet is my favorite musical grouping. (In fact, many rock bands are quartets). I heard the songs were inspired by letters left at the Juliet statue in Verona, Italy but that many be apocryphal. There is sweetness, comedy and dark comedy in the lyrics. Elvis and the quartet fuse together perfectly. 3. The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle - Bruce Springsteen- Do you want to go back to a time and a place where exuberance and joy are expressed? This album will take you to 1973 and the New Jersey Shore on a Friday night, hanging out with your friends and looking for the person you have a crush on! Springsteen lyrics are poetry here. I think his best album. 4. They Say I'm Different - Betty Davis. - She is SO cool. Just love this R&B/ Soul. The album cover is beautiful. Like a Goddess. 5. Young Rascals- The Young Rascals. I learned about this album from Norman and it has been in heavy rotation ever since. Inspiring sounds- like a perfect summer day. 6. One Nation Under a Groove- Funkadelic - Feel the funk. Have fun. 7. Apple Venus - XTC - I love every XTC album. And certain songs are just..incredible. Generals And Majors, Making Plans for Nigel. Andy Partridge is a musical genius. But this album is so much fun to listen to over and over. Many people think they sound like the Beatles but they remind me of the Kinks. Perhaps it is the oh so British sensibility. 8. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye - On a Sunday morning, when it is quiet and still. Put this album on and your place will feel like a cathedral - In a very good way. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's duet 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' - is my favorite duet. It is not on this album but thought I would mention the duet. 9. Smile - Beach Boys. A teenage symphony to God- That is what Brian said. Just glorious. Brain Wilson maybe our greatest living composer. To think about the breadth and depth of this project. Incredible undertaking. 10. Double Nickels on The Dime - The Minutemen - Fast, fun American punk. D. Boon, Watt, Hurley, make you realize cool things, came come from anywhere. The creative process in action. Honorable Mentions - Any Album by Tom Waits - Any Album by David Bowie I hope I inspired others to check out these great albums. Love to hear people's comments. Thanks Norman!
Nice to see an "unusual selection" I was a bit worried when listing mine ! BUT it is most listened to although my choice's vary month to month / year to year...
@@HTJB60 Hi Michael. You should never worry, just say what you enjoy! A few weeks ago, I tried to get Norman to list his 'favorite albums', but he said he could not. I think this idea is better, because it causes oneself to be more 'objective'. Asking yourself, well ,what do I really listen to a lot? Not the subjective question of 'What are my favorites? '- I agree with Norman- an impossible task. I also agree with you, this list can 'shift' from month to month but these albums keep resurfacing for me. I have learned about so many albums from this community Norman has created. I really love the ones when he is chatting it up with another music lover. Norman could have a degree in musicology,
@@CB-vg1wq Just listerning to "Who are the Brain police" ! Freak Out was an early LP I had. I've found the TH-cam 'mix' Selection is great. Found some fantastic music, which is what it's all about for me. I buy CD's as I'm poor (and old} Just won 9 Steven Still's & Manassas album's, with 3 S S CD's arriving in today's post. I didn't realise I didn't have any of his music on CD so unable to listen in my shed or the garden to him.... When I saw Chris video earlier today I liked the idea. I’m sure now you’ve done a response it will be a very successful thread. I hope people remember who started it nice touch to link his channel
Nice diverse list Mazzy, but I am somewhat surprised you left off any XTC album.! My list is XTC's Nonsuch (couild include 6 others) Style Council's Internationalists, Boston's debut, The Beatles White Album, and Sgt. Peppers, Stones' Let IT Bleed, and B Miles Davis Kind of Blue, The Kinks Arthur, Nick Lowe's The Cowboy Outfit, Elvis Costello GET HAPPY!
Great video Mazzy! 10 great pics. My favorite cover by the Beatles has always been Words of Love, like you said such beautiful harmonies. I love the Byrds pic as well, one of my favorites alongside Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Triad was the song that got Crosby kicked out of the band and was given to Jefferson Airplane, correct? Regarding R.E.M. I was a fan since they first came out in ’83 and saw them many times during the 80’s. I still love the IRS years. Murmur and Reckoning got me into listening to the Byrds with that jangle guitar, so much so that I went out and bought a Rickenbacker 330 and then a 360 when I played in a band.
I agree with your #2 pic "Louder Than Bombs". Features non-LP singles and B-sides and some alt-takes. The most famous song on the double-LP being "Please Let Me Get What I Want". By the way, the member that you didn't mention is the bassist Mike Joyce, one of the most melodic bassists since McCartney. Great video!
Hey! Thanks for turning me on to that Smithscompilation. Really sounds brilliant. The cover is also really great! I hardly know that band (except for Strangeways Here We Come). And, yes, the more records you have, the harder it becomes to decide what to listen to. One almost feels obliged to listen to music just because you have so much. Sometimes I really have to remind myself that I don t have to. 😅 Very nice videos you make there, and pleasant to listen to! Cheers from Munich, Germany
Love this topic, I will add to this thread. Still have to watch Chris' video too. But a few of these I could've picked myself especially Liege & Leaf. My favorite Fairport. Great pics
"Beatles '65" I got for Christmas '64........Mr. Moonlight got skipped so much that it is the best sounding track on my original copy. Like you said, fast forward to my serious listening era and Lennon is superb on it! Once I got a hold of a "Beatles for Sale" import (Probably '71) I was committed to finding their whole catalog on import. Which I did. Plus a whole bunch more. The addiction to vinyl is a heavy burden, but some of us must bear it!
Bang! Only halfway through viewing and you nailed two of my favourites. Beatles For Sale is - especially considering their extreme work schedule that year - a great album. I often go back to it. And then Bookends.Great go to album! They were never better.
Enjoyed that and I know my top two most played without question are Exile and Europe 72. I never ever tire of them. Way to difficult to single out 8 more.
By a slew of objective measures, the best rock/pop album ever made, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) by the extraordinary Laura Nyro. Its innovations, seismic influence, musical complexity, emotional depth, musicianship, themes, conceptual structure, vocal performance, poetic lyricism, sexual content, brilliant arrangements, commercial success ( 3 top 13 Billboard hits for other artists covers), beautiful cover art and fonts, exceptional songwriting at its core and scented with lilac which still lingers. A jazzy art pop masterpiece, unsurpassed: the album " blew everybody's mind " Todd Rundgren.
@@lupcokotevski2907 You are a silly boy who egotistically believes that everything he loves the most must be "objectively" the best. I'm not even sure you understand the meaning of "objective". (Are you related to that goofball, Rick Beato, who also makes unprovable statements based on his personal preferences?) I like some of Nyro's music a lot, but if that album was "objectively" the greatest, it should be mentioned on at least 90% of music critics' Top 10 lists, instead of being so obscure and half-forgotten even by lovers of 1960s music. Art is, by nature, subjective, and very few objective statements can be made about it. At best, one might be able to say that something is "objectively amongst the greatest". But that's as far as any truly intelligent person would go.
That Kate Bush album is brilliant and I listen to it a lot as well. This is a tough theme because I play a few albums from about 10 artists regularly across their catalog without going into one specific album. The Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Rush, Metallica, The Eagles, Miles Davis, Radiohead, The Alan parsons Project and so on, but to choose one from each would be tough. Cheers
At time i think our synapse are identical ! Not the best not the most loved but For Sale has a true magic and a impalpable sound like all you choices. I expected Buffalo Springfield Again there but i know you love it. Thanx for the passion graceness hallo from Milan Italy
Hi Mazzy You picked some great selections ! always seem to go to Runt by Todd Rundgren, Ram by Paul McCartney, Kiln House by Fleetwood Mac, Soundtrack to Rushmore (Wes Anderson), The Cars First album, Tapestry, Carole King,Neil Young After the Gold Rush,Joni Mitchell Court and Spark, C,S,N,&Y Deja Vu, and Mountain Nantucket Sleigh Ride. Happiness, Cindy
Great video. Thanks. Hatful of Hollow is my favourite Smiths compilation. That said, they didn't put out anything, album-wise, that wasn't brave and beautiful. I probably reach for HOH because it was my introduction to them and I wore that tape out on my walkman!
DSOTM, Welcome to the machine. (Pink Floyd) Sailor, Childern of the future. (Steve Miller band) Astral Weeks, Moondance. (Van Morrison) Vanilla Fudge, first and second album. Muddy Waters hits. Traffic John Barleycorn. Country Joe & the Fish Electric music for the mind and body. Jimi Hendrix hits. Jonny Cash Bitter tears. Neal Young Harvest moon.
great selection fella, thks.... a couple i shout are 'Todd Rundgren.. a wizard a true star!' and John Mayall - the turning point,,,, track 6 California especially is a tour de force,,,.....
Good choice. I saw Mayall do his Turning Point album straight through -- at the Fillmore West, August 1969. (He even played that Bowie knife for percussion.) Johnny Almond, Jon Mark. Wonderful album/concert. Opening acts were Mother Earth and New York Rock & Roll Ensemble.
A niche that only collectors would fully appreciate! (I came upon your list just after discovering your friend Chris's at The Long Cut. Sometimes algorithms work.) I consider certain records I've heard a million times to be like comfort food. They may not be great artists' grandest, most accomplished or polished works, but sometimes you want something reliable, nourishing and familiar, even if it's not widely considered their magnum opus. I'll try not to duplicate your or Chris's selections, but the compilations that immediately come to mind for me are various Stax singles collections, Stevie Wonder's "Greatest Hits Vol. 2," and Al Green's "Greatest Hits" (with the iconic cover that Elvis Costello echoes, intentionally or not, on "This Year's Model"). Other longtime staples for me include: Joni Mitchell's "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," Talking Heads' "More Songs About Buildings and Food," Steely Dan's "Katy Lied," the Kinks' "Face to Face," Television's "Adventure," Aretha Franklin's "Let Me In Your Life" (because Wonder's "Until You Come Back to Me" is one of my very favorite songs"), Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes," Elvis C's "My Aim is True"... And if I had to choose a lesser-but-still-glorious Beatles album, I'd pick "Let It Be," flaws and all...
The way Aretha sang Until You Come Back to Me… is a love sick anthem full of hope . Just love that song. Joni’s Hissing is an all time favorite too. You selected some great sounds.
I suspect (listening to music) subscribes to how one feels. Or how you and the wife feel. Or how you and your wife and your kid feel. Great music floats around us... And you're right... Interests change all the time. Peace on earth.
I could not find link that you mentioned several times. I am a bit dotty. Did I miss it somewhere? Thanks for sharing your go-to albums. I think I am a tad younger than you which seems to make a big difference in what I listen to most often. I llisten to Beatles and Kinks, but then most of my mine are a bit newer (Pixies, Tom Petty, Johnny Clegg & Juluka, etc.). There arre several of your picks that I have not listened to as a whole album so thhis gives me somethhing to discover today. I also am not beholden to vinyl juust because I moved around alot, including overseas, and lugging my albums became a nightmare. I do wish I held on to some but that is life. I was a radio DJ during the vinyl era so some of my frustrations with the medium stem from that. Thankks and cheers from New Mexico.
My favorite bands are Genesis and The Who. And yet I don't own "sell out"! I can stream it, but it's just not the same. I remember seeing that album at DJ's Sound City in Southcenter mall in Tukwila when it first came out, and almost buying it. Wish I had, but on my next trip to the record store I'll add it to my list. It's been missing from that list for some reason. I did the same thing with Thick as a Brick, and picked it up at High Voltage in Tacoma a couple of years ago. And I did it with Peter Gabriel's So, picking it up at Spin Cycle on Broadway. It's fun to fill the holes in your collection.
Living in the 70's (1974) by Skyhooks. Always a feel good joy. Most of the songs were banned from radio because of the sex and drug references. Fantastic inventive arrangements and wonderful lyrical flourishes "I feel like a good time that's never been had".
Mr. Moonlight is not too shabby. For Sale (UK Issue) is a stand out of the Beatles early work-probably because we all listened too much to 'A Hard Days Night' too much. The next three titles would bring Rubber Soul and Revolver after the HELP soundtrack. So, it is a RED HOT time for the Beatles and For Sale just floats in there getting less attention. Great cover shot. Simon & Garfunkel's- Bookends... the soundtrack from THE GRADUATE... and Bridge Over Troubled Waters. A Huge moment for the band. Which... was breaking up. Beggars Banquet (original cover art), Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers is a RS 'Triad' that is hard to mess with. I'm more inclined to the last two than the first, but no complaints. REMs Automatic for the People-from the CD Era-near perfect record. Paired in my mind with Neil Young's Harvest Moon. I would slide a Van Morrison album in here. It could be the double CD from the early 1990s just discussed: Hyms to the Silence.
So happy to see you starting off with Beatles for Sale. That album gets a lot of flak in the fan world for some reason, and I can’t understand it. I think it’s a great little album with a few stand-out gems on it.
Ok, I'll play... Leonard Cohen's first album, Surrealistic Pillow, Live/Dead, your Roy Orbison record, Amalia Rodrigues, Astral Weeks, Rubber Soul, Voices of Angels (Hildegard Von Bingen), Jackie Mitoo tribute album, Andres Segovia Program... like your list, not a ranking of 'best' or 'most important' but most played over the past couple of years.
Beatlles For Sale got me into The Beatles Still play it quote often. My top 3 1. The Bearles - The Beatles 1968 2. Pink Floyd - Meddle 1971 3. Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother 1970.
Many thanks, Mazzy, for your choices. I have watched your and David Bianco’s respective videos. It is amazing that I have many of these records (no surprise!) but very rarely spin them again. Has Jazz finally won the battle over Rock at my end? Seriously, I need to revisit some of those treasures. Many thanks for triggering me here.
Still wish you would listen to HP Lovecraft's 2nd album. (NOT THE FIRST ALBUM or A COMPILATION ALBUM)....I mean their 2nd album. The best psychdelic ever. Now this album I play over and over again with the ones you mentioned above.😀👍

Beatles, Stones and Roy Orbison! the ereasons I check your channel out regularly! Thank you for your list . I will of course follow up and listen to the one not in my collection. Liege and Leaf, Thank you for "suggestions"
I can't argue with any of your great choices. I might say; A Piece of What You Need by Teddy Thompson, Twilley by Dwight Twilley, Never Hear the End of It by Sloan, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music by Ray Charles, Songs from Northern Britain by Teenage Fanclub, Heijira by Joni Mitchell, Release Me by Rufus Wainwright, Tumbleweed Connection by Elton John, Henry V (film score) by Patrick Doyle, Whatever and Ever Amen by Ben Folds Five and Tomorrow the Green Grass by The Jayhawks
You picked two of my absolute favourites on vinyl there… REM automatic and Beatles “Beatles for sale”, great to stick those 2 LP’s on any day, any time.
Great picks Mazzy. The go-to’s for me are usually to change a mood or get even deeper into a mood. Some remind me of pleasant things from the past, others are simply pleasing to my ear. These are mine: Imperial Bedroom Late for the Sky Rubber Soul Trick of the Tail Brothers & Sisters On the Beach CSN self titled Court and Spark Car Wheels on a Gravel Road There goes Rhymin Simon .
Mine would be-Goats Head Soup,Salisbury by Uriah Heep,Thick As A Brick,Harvest,Dark Side Of The Moon,Who Do We Think We Are,Houses Of The Holy,Relish by Joan Osborne,The Raven by Steven Wilson, and Wildflowers by Petty
Great video, thank you! - I‘ll make it short, these are my 5 albums to go, and it always works: Beatles: Let it be, Paul Simon: There Goes Rhymin‘ Simon, Randy Newman: Good Ol‘ Boys, Kate Bush: Hounds of Love, Van Morrison: Poetic Champions Compose / Avalon Sunset. Bonus: Wingspan. All these melodies and harmonies! - Greetings from Berlin, Harry

Out of Time and Automatic For The People was where REM was reaching their creative peak. They continued to make great music after that time but those two albums were like their Rubber Soul and Revolver.
Love the video. Was surprised to see Louder Than Bombs on there. Been thinking about picking it up. It’s been years since I’ve heard it. I’m working on one of these as well.
Before you started with your albums, I tried to guess which Jefferson Airplane album you would show. To my surprise you didn’t. Lol. Also, I thought I was the only person in the VC that liked Mr Moonlight. It’s the strong harmonies that pulled me into that song. Well done mazzy. I may need to hope on this thread.
I’ve listened to Mike Oldfield’s- ”Hergest ridge” more than any other album. I was nine when it was released in 1974 , and my music nerd uncle gave me it for christmas. I still got that very same record.
Great choices Mazzy. Most of your choices are the same as mine....But, am I the only one who thinks Fairport Convention's "What We Did On Our Holidays" was their best and most perfect record? It's the one I pick up and play over and over again.😀👍
@@alanartme1hi - what I was referring to was the first song on What We Did on Our Holidays album which is called Fotheringay. Sandy named her later band after that song.
@@snowfiresunwind oh… I’m sorry… you’re right! I forgot the song Fotheringay… Well, actually, the title slipped my mind, but I know the song well. Thanks for correcting me.👍
There's an argument to be made for "Unhalfbricking" too. What amazes me most about Fairport from this period is that all three albums were released in one year, 1969. (A year in which, sadly, the group was involved in a road accident which cost the life of their drummer Martin Lamble).
@@thereunionparty Exactly! And Martin was a key part of Fairport during that period. His drumming on A Sailors Life is just superb - and he was just 19 years of age - mind boggling!
I need to do this also, but, I can confirm we have two in common for sure. They've both lived in the rack next to my turntable for a few years now, and that's Louder Than Bombs and Hounds of Love.
Just like to add my favourite of all time is August And Everything Else by Counting Crows. All their other albums got worse the more they released but that is brilliant.
For me: Neil Young - On the Beach Ride - Nowhere Fennesz - Venice David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive Joanna Newsome -Y’s Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen Massive Attack -Blue Lines The Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Why Am I Treated So Bad! Pulp - This is Hardcore Outkast - ATliens
Hi Mazzy, nice comments about Lennon and the Beatles for Sale LP, interesting insight on those. Your Stones pick is certainly one of my all-time favorites - vacillates between that one, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers (but see my comment below on my “go to” picks and yet another Stones go to LP or two….) My ten “go to” / very often listened-to albums are, in no particular order…Bob Dylan: Bringing it all Back Home, John Mayall: Blues from Laurel Canyon, Brian Eno: Taking Tiger Mountain, Steppenwolf: The Second, The Beach Boys: Holland, The Band: Music From Big Pink, The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour, The Rolling Stones: Goat’s Head Soup” (and “Now”, if you’ll allow me a tie here…), Talking Heads: More Songs About Buildings and Food, and for a tenth pick - Wings: At the Speed of Sound. Having said all of this, I could give you another ten picks from among the variety of obscure psychedelic relics in my collection, and so on. Thanks, and peace out.
Great video, Mazzy. I am shocked that I actually own all ten albums...in cd format. As for my most-played, they're all my own custom cds...Beatles, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, Leonard Cohen, Bob Seger, Elton John, 80s Modern Rock, etc... even a Billy Joel (but no Phil Collins.)
Great theme. Thanks for starting with Beatles for Sale, probably their least talked about record. The originals are great, and George gets to pay tribute to Carl Perkins. Notorious Byrd Brothers and Liege and Lief are two of my all time favorites.
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, Music From The Big Pink, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, American Beauty, Unhalfbricking, Forever Changes, Pet Sounds, Hot Rats,Safe As Milk and What's Going On.........do it every time!!!

It’s one of my favourite early period Beatles albums - apart from Mr Moonlight - which is quite dreadful!
let me know when you're releasing anything half as good as "mr. moonlight" (providing you sing like john lennon) and i'll buy a copy in every format for everyone on my block.@@simonhodgetts6530
My number 1 go to album through my life has been Dire Straits Communique. Still makes me feel good! Great vid Mazzy! Thanks Chris!
Great record. Yeah ✌🏼
Dire Straits debut album might make my top 10.
Definitely would have a Dire Straits album in my top-10 as well. Maybe s/t or Love Over Gold. Or the underrated live album, Alchemy.
funny, that's their least known album if I had to guess. It's a good one like all of them in my opinion.
L😍VE Communique!! Cross my heart and spit, swear upon the grave of my mother! ✌🏼
Your list is fantastic! Here are my picks:
Sgt. Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pet Sounds, Who‘s Next, Wish You Were Here, The Stranger, Aja, So, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Let It Bleed, Synchronicity
Honorable mention: Hounds Of Love
Thank you!
The prequel to Rubber Soul
Beatles for Sale, I once read long ago the cover photo reflects how exhausted they were at the time.
@@canesvenatici4259 Not unlike the Beach Boys California Days/California Nights brought in the big arrangements for their Pet Sounds album.
I never get sick of NBB, from that first note on track one to the end. Way ahead of its time.
Talk Talk: Spirit Of Eden
Lou Reed: New York
Fleetwood Mac: Bare Trees
Uriah Heep: Demons and Wizards
Nick Drake: Bryter Layter
The Who: Who's Next
Moby Grape: first album
Frightened Rabbit: Midnight Organ Fight
Jimi Hendrix: Cry of Love
Groundhogs: Split
I do love me some Liege and Lief! I agree with you on Sandy Denny's voice. Also love Kate Bush. Cheers
My top ten
1. Jj Cale ‘naturally’
2. John Mayan & the blues breakers.
3. Boz scaggs ‘come on home’.
4. Allman Bros band ‘live at Fillmore east’.
5. Bob Dylan ‘blood on the tracks’
6. Velvet underground.
7. Neil young ‘after the gold rush.
8. Fleetwood Mac ‘Fleetwood Mac’.
9. Tony joe white ‘home made ice cream.
10. Bettye lavette ‘things have changed.
Gourd list ✌🏼
Kudos for including Hounds of Love. Like you said...a brilliant and perfect album.
Here's my Ten Go-To Records List (in no particular order):
Ammonia Avenue - Alan Parsons Project (1984, Arista Records)
Oranges and Lemons - XTC (1989, Virgin Records)
Teatro - Willie Nelson (1998, Island Records)
Deep in the Blues - James Cotton (1996, Verve Records)
Lonely Runs Both Ways - Alison Krauss & Union Station (2004, Rounder Records)
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams (1998, Mercury Records)
Angel Dust - Faith No More (1992, Reprise Records)
Eight Arms to Hold You - Veruca Salt (1997, Outpost Records / Geffen)
Kid A - Radiohead (2000, Parlophone Records / Capitol)
Especially For You - The Smithereens (1986, Enigma Records)
Kid A almost Made it
Lonely Runs Both Ways is a great album.
The Notorious Byrd Brothers is a great pick! My favorite album by The Byrds.
Beatles for Sale my favourite Beatle Album oh yeah on my list has to be Gerry Rafferty Baker Street🌟
Gilbert o Sullivan 1971 album Himself 🌟James Taylor One man Dog 🌟David Gray White Ladder🌟
Billy Fury The Sound of Fury 1960🌟
I loved your choices ... So similar to my most played. Sandy Denny my all time favourite female singer .."No End" just blows me away every time.. Thank you for your super vids...
Wow! Some great selections. Liege and Lief is a great album that doesn’t get much love
Mine are: Something Else (KInks), White Album (Beatles), Strange Days (Doors), Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan), POB (John Lennon), His Hand in Mine (Elvis), Blonde on Blonde (Bob Dylan), American Music (The Blasters), Manassas (Manassas), & Very Best of Cream (Cream),
Dylan was one I almost grabbed
Manassas is fabulous ‘go to’ for me…
I have always loved Mr Moonlight. Ringos drums are awesome.
Interesting list. My twelve go-to albums are slightly similar but totally different:
“I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight” - Richard & Linda Thompson
“If I Could Only Remember My Name” - David Crosby
“The White Album” - The Beatles
“Hergest Ridge” - Mike Oldfield
“A Sensual World” - Kate Bush
“Blows Against the Empire” - Paul Kantner
“Burgers” - Hot Tuna
“Melt” - Peter Gabriel
The Best of the Guess Who
“Atom Heart Mother” -Pink Floyd
“Let it Bleed” - Rolling Stones
“Hejira” - Joni Mitchell
I could enjoy visiting your house.... I'd pick The Chrome Nun & Hokey Pokey & Steven Still's over David. BUT it's ALL personal choice & I've had friend's infulence me in to some odd music. Amon Dull 2, SAHB & Edgar Broughton Band.
So glad to see that your Beggar’s Banquet is not the revolting “when you listen to this, think of piss” cover. Most enjoyable video, as ever.
Thank you sir ✌🏼
I felt inspired, Norman - to reply with my 10 records I listen to the most. This is not in any order.
1. Court & Spark - Joni Mitchell - I suppose most people prefer her more folk based albums. But , I just love the orchestra with her
voice.
Honorable Mentions
- Any Album by Tom Waits
- Any Album by David Bowie
I hope I inspired others to check out these great albums.
I really love NRPS & just bought "Where I come from" RADIO MIXES & LIVE BONUS. with 2 fantastic jam's. Let it grow {12 min's & Dirty Business 18 Min's, which got me to buy the Album >>> th-cam.com/video/OkdFoxax8qs/w-d-xo.html. I don't have any of the Music you listed . Use to love the Beach Boy's "Surfin' stuff" & Elvis's first album, I even bought some Red Shoe's back then. LOL The B, Angle's kept trying to nick them. (I was a 25 year old Hippy visiting Punk Venue's. Introduced them to Patti Smith's HORSES. PS >>> Fully AGREE with You "I think this idea is better, because it causes oneself to be more 'objective'. Asking yourself, well ,what do I really listen to a lot"? >>> ALSO, I think some people list what they think they should list.... None of that from your list, I see. LOL
Great picks!! I would have to add “King of America” by Elvis Costello.
Mine has been Skylarking by XTC for a long time.
That’s a great one too
Love this topic, I will add to this thread. Still have to watch Chris' video too. But a few of these I could've picked myself especially Liege & Leaf. My favorite Fairport. Great pics
Grevious Angel, Gram Parsons. Theres always a copy out in my music room.
Excellent Choice. I absolutely could have included this one 🤠
One of my favorite new albums is the new Lori McKenna album "1988"
Television Marquee Moon is one of my all time favorite albums
Great idea, what are my ‘go to’ LP’s, and it is very much a mood thing for me, something to contemplate. Nice video, thought provoking. Thanks.
Yeah it’s hell ✌🏼
WONderful share, Mazzy! You OFten make my day! ✌🏼
Bang! Only halfway through viewing and you nailed two of my favourites. Beatles For Sale is - especially considering their extreme work schedule that year - a great album. I often go back to it. And then Bookends.Great go to album! They were never better.
I love that you Beatles For Sale … I go to that one often myself …. Always delivers enjoyment
Finally some love for Beatles For Sale. The Lennon stuff on this is amazing plus it has Honey Don’t!
Love the Beatles for Sale review - that'll get a few of us returning to that album Mazzy!
Such an underrated album. A masterpiece in every sense of the word.
i don't know how LN entered the conversation (i watched norman's video a good while back) but i'm all in on praising her any hour of any day.
>>... By a slew of objective measures, the best rock/pop album ever made
.
Guffaw-😂ut-Loud!
Sounds pretty subjective to me.
@@D-FensDogG Sounds like you are ignorant of facts and compositional elements and social and human context.
Thanks, Mazzy. You’re a good man.
And you are a true inspiration or many reasons. Not just music ✌🏼🎸🎹
Buffalo could have been here if there were 25 ✌🏼🤠

Hi Mazzy You picked some great selections ! always seem to go to Runt by Todd Rundgren, Ram by Paul McCartney, Kiln House by Fleetwood Mac, Soundtrack to Rushmore (Wes Anderson), The Cars First album, Tapestry, Carole King,Neil Young After the Gold Rush,Joni Mitchell Court and Spark, C,S,N,&Y Deja Vu, and Mountain Nantucket Sleigh Ride. Happiness, Cindy
Kiln House and Ram are on my list of heavy rotation records.
Mountain - Nantucket…fabulous image filled album from a long time ago. What great memories
Love Kiln House. Also "Then Play On."
Great selections! All mood-based. Love it.
Love your vids Norman. Very inspiring
Great video. Thanks. Hatful of Hollow is my favourite Smiths compilation. That said, they didn't put out anything, album-wise, that wasn't brave and beautiful. I probably reach for HOH because it was my introduction to them and I wore that tape out on my walkman!
Hounds of Love is just incredible 🥰
Hi Mazzy! You picked some great records. I love Bookends. ♥️ Take care.
Thank you Melinda ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
DSOTM, Welcome to the machine. (Pink Floyd) Sailor, Childern of the future. (Steve Miller band)
Astral Weeks, Moondance. (Van Morrison) Vanilla Fudge, first and second album. Muddy Waters hits. Traffic John Barleycorn. Country Joe & the Fish Electric music for the mind and body. Jimi Hendrix hits. Jonny Cash Bitter tears. Neal Young Harvest moon.
Steve Miller Band, indeed. And don't forget Brave New World..!
great selection fella, thks.... a couple i shout are 'Todd Rundgren.. a wizard a true star!' and John Mayall - the turning point,,,, track 6 California especially is a tour de force,,,.....
For Mayall, I like his very underappreciated Bare Wires album. Also "The Blues Alone".
Good list too. And mine might be different next week ✌🏼
I admire your collection. Great stuff.
Love Nick Cave, The Byrds, Beatles Great Stuff Mazzy!
Thank for the turn on to Nippon Acid Folk. Love finding new music not on my radar
Living in the 70's (1974) by Skyhooks. Always a feel good joy. Most of the songs were banned from radio because of the sex and drug references. Fantastic inventive arrangements and wonderful lyrical flourishes "I feel like a good time that's never been had".
I feel like a school boy, that's grown a beard
So glad you put Beatles For Sale there. So often, when people rate the Beatle albums, that one is way down the list. I think it’s a gem!
I love that this is going around the vinyl community
Also love the Who’s Sell Out. Glad to see this one gets a little more credit, at least.
This Night Has Opened my Eyes is a forever classic.
Hi Norman, agreed for Fairport Convention, ( all the Records with Sandy, fotheringay great lonely album, the Raven etc etc
It’s simply fun sharing music with people. So many wonderful albums ✌🏼
Beatlles For Sale got me into The Beatles
Still play it quote often.
My top 3
1. The Bearles - The Beatles 1968
2. Pink Floyd - Meddle 1971
It’s fine to switch back and forth when the mood hits you ✌🏼
Still wish you would listen to HP Lovecraft's 2nd album. (NOT THE FIRST ALBUM or A COMPILATION ALBUM)....I mean their 2nd album. The best psychdelic ever. Now this album I play over and over again with the ones you mentioned above.😀👍

Out of Time and Automatic For The People was where REM was reaching their creative peak. They continued to make great music after that time but those two albums were like their Rubber Soul and Revolver.
I added 8 of the 11 to a Mazzy playlist on my Apple Music ; the ones I had in my library; beatles for sale is such a brilliant album often over looked
It's a brilliant album for sure - Fotheringay, I'll Keep it with Mine. Meet on the Ledge. Eastern Rain - just sublime!
For me:
Neil Young - On the Beach
Ride - Nowhere
Fennesz - Venice
David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive
Joanna Newsome -Y’s
Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen
Massive Attack -Blue Lines
The Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Why Am I Treated So Bad!
Pulp - This is Hardcore
Outkast - ATliens
Sylvian and Newsome could be on my list ✌🏼
Hi Mazzy, nice comments about Lennon and the Beatles for Sale LP, interesting insight on those. Your Stones pick is certainly one of my all-time favorites - vacillates between that one, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers (but see my comment below on my “go to” picks and yet another Stones go to LP or two….)
My ten “go to” / very often listened-to albums are, in no particular order…Bob Dylan: Bringing it all Back Home, John Mayall: Blues from Laurel Canyon, Brian Eno: Taking Tiger Mountain, Steppenwolf: The Second, The Beach Boys: Holland, The Band: Music From Big Pink, The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour, The Rolling Stones: Goat’s Head Soup” (and “Now”, if you’ll allow me a tie here…), Talking Heads: More Songs About Buildings and Food, and for a tenth pick - Wings: At the Speed of Sound.
