      @@neverrip875 As I see it, most games are pay to win even the ones that aren't. You can pay for boosts, you can pay for gold, you can pay for the right cards, there's few games that don't involve some way to pay and gain either resource advantage or human assistance on a team. It's just how games go. Magic is upfront, you have to buy cards to play the game. It's pay to win in that respect yes, but it's at least transparent to that end.

    Awesome video!
    Born into this world in 86, I was just a touch too young to have too much disposable income (and on the wrong side of the states, to have much luck at getting alpha / beta anyways) to have had much a chance at this old magic stuff. I want to say I remember riding home on the school bus, talking to a kid who's parents were "well off" about how they bought him some arabian nights packs at $15 each. This was probably around 1998-99. He played in tournaments in bigger cities, had his deck "ranked" if that was a real thing.... and I remember he had some cards like demonic tutor (I remember that specifically... as another kid took it from him in a joking manner and him retorting "that's fine, you don't know what to use it to look for..") but I don't remember if they were alpha or beta.
    At any rate, I always felt I was just a tad too late to the magic scene. There were a handful of kids in my really small home town that played, but no one other than that one kid really had any expensive cards. At best, some unlimited stuff but more 4th, 5th and 6th edition. By the time magic was "a thing" here in Western PA the original A / B / U / AN cards were just too expensive. Especially for a teenager with parents who weren't well off. I did get into Pokemon a bit.... base set / jungle / fossil were already out of print.. I started buying base set 2 stuff.
    I've always loved the artwork, the mechanics, the history of MTG even though to this day I have no clue how to play it. Watching videos like these ones, watching openbooster go through is NUTS beta booster box opening (dude has to have like as close to the best possible booster box... SO MUCH POWER 9 IN ONE BOOSTER BOX!).... seeing this collections. It's cool for me. It's like I get to "experience" it without the crazy high prices that I'll likely never be able to afford. But, to some extent, thanks to folks like you (alpha investments) and openboosters and others... I get enough of the experience that it's OK for me to not actually own the cards. I remember seeing some arabian nights booster packs for sale in the local collectibles shop, at insane prices for even the time. I want to say $30-$40 a pack... at a time when I was buying 1st edition jungle pokemon packs for around $5 each IIRC. I pulled two if not three jungle holos out of those packs, including a first edition jolteon without the jungle symbol. I regret selling my cards now :( but you live and you learn.

    same will happen in Magic over the next 100 years as it happened in stamps 1840 to date: the high end rare material finds a home in life-long collections, and specific elusive items change hands in the 20 to 50 year time frame. There are items from the 1840s-1850s that have been at auction once every 40 years or so. Look up Hawaii Missionaries. Magic is a baby compared to stamp collecting. There will be great collections built that will have a dozen Alpha Black Lotuses. The super whale stamp collectors (Ferrari, Burrus, Ishikawa etc) may not have materialized in Magic yet.

      Due in part to the increased volume of cards printed?

    • @BionMTG
      @BionMTG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adolphus28 I would think perhaps in part, but it's contrasted by comparing current generation cards side by side. Looking on most pre-release kits, those cards are printed in JPN, vs many boosters box cards that are printed in the US, and will have ink tone imbalances, and what I've noticed as foils that curl more easily. Having said that, I believe good quality cards are capable of being made in the required quantity, but I would assume those increased costs would be passed to us as the customer.

    The argument about icy manipulator and Serra angel being reprinted and it doesn’t affect the original price is because they are cards that are only bought to collect, and not play. But for cards that are expensive because they actually are wanted for decks as well as collecting, like dual lands, they would absolutely be affected by a reprinting.

      Rudy once said that the value of his collection is somewhere in the 15 to 20 million dollars.
      His collection is also his weakness: he can never sell eveything at once, because it would crash prices.
      Yet, he buys and buys and buys.
      Rudy's collection MIGHT be the downfall of MtG finance at some point in the future - depending on how he (or his relatives?) handle it.
      As much as I like the videos and all - so much cards in one hand is dangerous.
      It might also be a marketplace earthquake, if his collection ever gets destroyed (tsunami, flooding or anything of that magnitude).

    Rudy: is it possible that you end up building such a strong position, and you end up holding the cards for so long, that sometime in the future there is no buyer for your cards? Do you worry about that at all? I assume your endgame is to use these to fund retirement, or be a backstop or insurance policy for income in retirement. What if there’s no buyer for these? So hard to find a mint Juggernaut on these older cards. Not many people played with sleeves back then and that card went well in any kind of aggro deck.

    I still have a permission/deck destruction blue/white deck that used island sanctuary to effectively end all hope of touching me with anything. Tough card to use, but not impossible. Don't have a lot of beta, though, mostly unlimited/revised

    What is it with Serra having stains? All of my old ones have stains too, but its not er chocolate like that one. The Mana Vault is super sweeeeeet!!!!! Also the Nightmare, it's gorgeous. I'm waiting for my invitation to go to Florida and play magic Old School 93-94!! My first rare was an unlimited Personal incarnation. I traded it for Vesuvan Doppelganger!
    Meekstone was the cornerstone of Zak Dolan's first world championship deck.
    It's funny that Rudy talks about cards evading him because we found this too and I think it had something to do with the printing. like the infamous Legends uncommon A/B fiasco. My friend openned a whole case of Legends and didn't pull even 1 of the uncommon Thunder Spirits he wanted because of the printing.

    I get there’s a gamut of things to checklist authenticity. Even more abstract things like feel or intuition. What’s to stop a team of counterfeiters to thinktank a reverse engineer to print these things? Is it too much work for not enough profit? Essentially building your own paper mill, printing press. Mixing your own ink. Using retro software. And doin quality control until you get it right. It’s certainly not above board but that’s never stopped mankind’s sheer will and determination. Thoughts?

    • @whitehelm1
      @whitehelm1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would not be profitable. Maby for a few cards but most of the value in these cards comes from low supply. This means that the ammount they would have to print to make a profit would crater the market so hard that it would not be profitable anyway.
