Hi Steffi! I recently moved from a 250sqft efficiency that I had set up in the couch divider style. The bed was in line with the door, so at the foot of the bed, I used a small open bookcase to block the view I'd the bed, as well as define a small office area.
Hey, Steffi! I enjoy all of your content, but I specifically enjoy these types of videos you create. This type of content really gives me so many ideas. I really like that LA studio, it is so cute! My favorite layout for a studio is the triangle. The stacked layout and couch divider layout is also really nice. I feel both of those layouts gives a bit more of that distinct section feel from "bedroom" to "living room."
My very first place all my own was a studio that had been (probably illegally) converted from the master bedroom of the place next door. The adjoining door was still there, just sealed, and my one door and only window was a sliding glass door to the walkway. It didn't have the space for any of these lovely layouts. I furnished it much like my old bedroom, just with a kitchenette and a bathroom attached. I loved it and often still think about it! Studios can be the best!
As a small space organizer and someone who has lived in a studio for the past 7 years, I have *very* strong feelings about studio layouts. With the (possible) exception of studios with highly defined alcoves for a bed (for example the luxury LA studio Annie Bardonski used to have, or the cool DT Vancouver studio of Olin Brix, who are both highly searchable on YT) I believe that any studio with an actual bed in it looks like either a dorm or a hotel room. Use a sofa bed, a daybed (like the IKEA Hemnes) or go to the expense of a Murphy bed if you don't want to look like you're living the transient life! One common layout you didn't mention makes me crazy (and would also bother you, since I know you're not fond of using shelving or Kallax units to define a sleeping area). It's where you come into the living area, there's a shelving unit with books and bins opposite the sofa (creating a sort of wall), and then the bed is tucked behind the shelving. In the ones I've seen, the bed is inevitably right beside the only window in the room and the high shelving blocks all or most of the light, especially where I've seen people put up a curtain on a rod between the shelving unit and the wall, at the end of the bed. It's to make it more like a separate room, and less visible from other parts of the suite but it really just makes for a dark, depressing living room. If you must have it set up this way, at least flip the sleeping and living areas, so the bed is in the darkest area of the room (easier for you to sleep) and the sofa is under the window! I also suggest you use the smallest bed you can sleep in, if you really want a bed in your studio (so, a twin or at most a full, rather than a queen). Make up for the size with an amazing mattress and bed linens, if you must, because that's what is likely to have the most impact on the quality of your sleep.

I only know one thing: If I ever move into a studio again, I will get a Murphy Bed. I lived in 3 Studios: a 17m2Mikroapartment with the concret floor and white modern Buildins of Doom (no possibility to even move a desk around - they have been boltet to the walls , a 12 m2 shoebox, a 24 m2 with doormlike furniture (and in every single one I lived with my Partner - even during the pandemic, with a cosy 120cm wide single bed for us) and I just wished that I coould have gotten my own furniture with a little bit more possibility to do as I please. We live in a big Appartment now, but I gladly would live in a studio, if I could choose my own furniture .
Another great video, Steffi! You gave me a wonderful idea I'd never thought of, although it would involve having a love seat or smaller sofa in front of a closet door with the tv in some piece of furniture in front of a radiator. Okay, not the greatest idea, but something new to consider! I had no idea that after living in a one bedroom apartment for almost 5 years that I'd be living in what you call The Hotel Room style apartment. Yikes. The challenges. Working on all of them, and now trying to accommodate a recording area for voiceovers. Just difficult, not impossible! Thank you, as always, for the inspiration!!💗
Haha! Hilo... Harlet... Steffi, I have a one bedroom, however I use my bedroom as an office/storage space. I like the couch divider setup. However I kinda use the hotel set up. What I did was used my coffee table as a divider, and built a custom credenza out of a headboard. I store folding seating in for visitors.
Hi, I am currently building mine, it's a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom and now I enjoy watching these kind of videos, so my kitchen is separate, then it's my bedroom, and my bathroom, sort of in a straight line, with dividers
If I had no choice but to live in a tiny studio apartment, I would set up the living room area so it was nearest the windows to get natural sunlight and would have the bedroom area farthest away from the windows so I could take a daytime nap in semi darkness. I would probably have just an adult size twin bed to minimize the floor space taken up by the bedroom area and raise that bed frame on risers to have storage space underneath. I would place some bookcases or closet storage units from Ikea, back-to-back, to make a head-height temporary wall between the living room area and the bedroom area and give me plenty of storage space. I would keep the kitchenette counter clear of everything and maybe even hang some sheer curtains from the ceiling to hide this area. Some large mirrors leaning against the walls of the living room area could make that space appear larger. I would limit the furniture in the living room area to two comfortable club chairs, a large rectangular ottoman to serve as a coffee table or extra seating and a couple of tiny side tables to hold drinks if I had visitors. I would keep the size of the wall-mounted TV to a minimum and hide it behind a tapestry or other art work when not in use. I would have a lap top computer I could stow away behind a club chair instead of using a space-hogging computer desk. I would have lots of tall potted plants sitting on the floor in front of the windows, shorter plants on the window sills and trailing plants hanging in baskets from the ceiling to act as living curtains. That temporary wall between the living and bedroom areas would serve as a privacy screen when I changed clothes in the bedroom area. If I absolutely needed a printer, I would probably place it on the kitchenette counter top, hidden behind sheer curtains. I would keep my clothing, shoes, accessories and other belongings to a carefully edited minimum and all of it stowed out of sight to reduce visual clutter. I would do minimal cooking in that tiny apartment so the carpeting and fabrics would not stink with cooking odors. The wall of plants in the living room area would help keep the trapped air in the tiny apartment fresh and oxygenated.
I like to have some sense of coziness and privacy though so I think the second apt you showed that has the nook, for the triangle layout, it is what i would like to have. And having to see the kitchen directly in front of my bed is a huge turn off for me as well, so having it sideways and a little out of direct sight is perfect for me. I lived in one studio for 6 months and I put up a wall of fabric curtains to separate the couch area from the bed are, and I was lucky to have the kitchen off on a nook tucked away from sight. Needless to say, I never liked living in a studio apt. You can do a day bed in the hotel layout Today's daybeds are pretty nice and some are large enough to feel substantial and are very comfortable.
I'm new to your channel, video was inspiring and helpful! So where i live is what used to be a hotel, and the last one is my scenario, not to my liking but what i was given. The layout is like a short L, entrance - right side ac closet/left side bed/couch , to the right of entrance, bookshelf/tv/computer unit; wall to the right of window, a plant - had some flooding in that spot so not wanting to put anything really valuable; I'm the minimalist-type who loves to see the hardwood floor; maybe a long rug under the bed/couch.
I live in a studio that is barely 250sf. The floor plan/layout is configured so the bathroom and kitchen are on one side of the space and the one wall in the main area that doesn't have a window or a door in it is angled because its the roof line. It's the only wall I can put my bed against without impeding flow. I can't figure out how to fit a couch, but I have an antique hope chest that can work as seating. and I do have a comfy-ish chair. I have scoured TH-cam searching for a studio tour/feature that has a similar layout as mine, but can't find one. I guess I'm closest to the Hotel vibe. I don't have a TV. Even with it's quirks, I love my studio!!
lol ive changed it since i commented before. it's working really well so far, ive gone through a lot of configurations. i gave my tv to my roommate cuz theirs broke and they need it more than me. i guess mine would still count as the row?? my room is long and skinny. so my futon with relaxing pastel tapestry above is behind me, across from where im sitting at my desk where i have shelves above and bookshelf with supplies to my right. the window is in between the desk and futon (so to my left) which is the centerpiece of my whole room. then, i have a room divider beside the bed and on the other side is just horrible cubbies i hope to diy soon lol and a metal closet rack.. across from the closet/along the same wall as my desk is my pet gecko below my misty tree tapestry and then a get-ready vanity station. i also work out on the mat over here. then beside that, so way to my right, i have a wall-to-wall privacy curtain blocking the entranceway and hallway to the other part of the apt i share. hope this was interesting to some degree 🤭
You know how you see back to back sofa setups? Have you ever seen a bed to sofa back to back setup? Sofa facing to the front and the bed headboard is against the back of the sofa.....essentially both turning away from each other and adding some privacy
I'm actually moving into that first layout lol! I don't like the bed facing the kitchen and I want to rotate it in that same corner (mine doesn't have the closet there) with the couch at the end of the bed and the TV/console against the window at the end. Thoughts?
Yeah that's probably the case! But it wouldn't be my first choice, at least from a styling perspective. I really don't like the look of a pulled-out TV mount, but that's just personal preference!
I prefer either the couch divider or stacked layout. Having a living room zone somewhat separate from the bed zone is an absolute necessity for me. I am very lucky to have a separate kitchen off a little hallway. Much as I don’t want to see my bed, I don’t want to look at my kitchen.

I live in a small NYC 1bed. But, if I lived in a studio the stacked layout would be the best for me.

Wall mounted TVs come with swivel mounts now. You can pull them out and angle them when being used

In the baathroom or inside media unit? Otherwise it wont matter bc you cant hide it.
Don't most people put litter boxes in the bathroom?
It totally depends on the studio! The bathroom is an option, a closet if there's room, and you could also look into cat litter cabinets!

For the row apartment. Instead of putting the tv in that nook. I would buy a projector and get a window shade to use as a movie screen.

In the first apt - why would you put your back to the window (to look at your bed)?
The TV in layout one looks like it might be on a full motion mount so it can be pulled out and turned to where you are when your watching it.
Yeah that's probably the case! But it wouldn't be my first choice, at least from a styling perspective. I really don't like the look of a pulled-out TV mount, but that's just personal preference!
