It's actually better than Thriller based on the music by itself. Thriller is massive because of the videos. Content wise , Off the Wall is better.

The sad thing is that Quincy has recently claimed Mike used to “steal” a lot of stuff like the bass line for Billie Jean and pieces of other songs too when he has always praised him and the work they’ve done together. He probably never said a word of this to MJ’s face, what an hypocrite. Btw MJ never stole anything, for Billie Jean, he got inspired by the bass line of “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” by Hall & Oates and he also admitted it. But you can hardly notice it and the two songs are totally different in the end. In fact he produced some of the most unique and best songs of all time and it became one of his most famous singles for a reason.
And from a different angle, Madonna very obviously took inspiration from BILLIE JEAN for PAPA DON'T PREACH. Very similar chords, melody, structure and themes.

Jacob Jorgenson Don’t know if Picasso ever said that but I’ve always hated that quote. Great artists are inspired by other great artists but should never steal imo, that wouldn’t make them “artists”. MJ had multiple influencers and created unique art of his own. That’s how it should be.
Quincy pointed out a fact that is always overshadowed by the success of Thriller, that Off The Wall was massive in terms of sale and impact and was the biggest selling album by a black artist, which means MJ at 21 had outsold all the popular groups at the time EWF, Parliament, Teddy P, Kool and the Gang, he outsold them all.
Off the Wall, didn't sell big until after Thriller was released. It never top the charts anywhere in the world (except for the R & B charts in the US - which is not the same as topping the pop charts). It was also not nominated for Album of the Year at the AMA ( in which the nominees are based on sales), Donna Summer's Bad Girls was nominated though, she did sell over 4 million.

I agree Off the Wall was 10 times better to me than Thriller. I've never liked Beat It or Billie Jean they were the 2 corniest songs I've ever heard. I think his very best album was the Dangerous album. Which is the album that sold the least.

Growing up as a Jackson fan from the Motown days and currently, I must say that Off The Wall is MJ best album(so much funk and soul in that album). When those songs from that album came out they put MJ at a different level.
Q really helped him with those albums, especially bringing rock with you(w/ Rod Temperton) to Michael. They were a great team.

'Off The Wall' was an astounding success. He had managed to achieve a lot of firsts with it and imo I believe that is when the air shifted and the color barrier started breaking. People seem to often forget what a fantastic album that is and how hugely popular it was because when 'Thriller' came out, it blew the doors off of everything in sight.
Bad Era Haven Off The Wall is a masterpiece in itself. Every song on that album was a hit.
The truth is that Off The Wall, wasn't that huge...the album started to sell again after Thriller was released and exploded in 1982. Off the Wall wasn't nominated for album of the year at the 1980 AMA awards (which are based on sales- top selling albums), Bad Girls was. The color barrier was kicked all to hell by Donna Summer....she was the first female artist do dominate the Billboard Charts and pop music's first female mega star. She cross into multiple genres and sold millions of records worldwide. Mary J. Blige & Lenny Kravitz refer to her as '"the game changer". She was billboard top hot 100 act, from 1976-82 (pre mtv era) with 12 top 10's (10 top 5s). She was the first female to have #1 single and #1 album simultaneously in the modern era,(3 times in 8 months), the first to have 2 songs in the top 3 (twice in 4 months), the first to be on top of 3 major charts, at the same time. The first to have 3 # 1 singles, and 5 top 10s and/or 5 top 5s, in a calendar year (1979). She took 3 multi-platinum double album to the top of the charts in a 14 month period. Sold 20 million plus albums and 15 million singles ( 10 gold (1mil +), 2 platinum (2 mil +), 1 gold maxi-single) in the US at the end of the 70s. She is under certified by the RIAA because they didn't start multi-platinum certifications until the fall of 1984, and her catalog has never had it's certifications updated. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame named her Diva De Tutte Dive....the first true diva of the modern pop era.

Michael was certainly famous before Quincy, but "Off the wall" and "Thriller" launched him into the stratosphere and made him an icon. Quincy Jones had a LOT to do with that.

It's hard to define Michael Jackson's career...but you're spot on IMO...i'm from the east coast and during Off the Wall period people was into go-go music heavy percussion sounds,i remember when on his OTW tour i wasn't interested in going to the show,to me the Jackson's at that time was like a nostalgia act,totally agree in retrospect after Thriller then OTW got more recognition and became this "underrated" album

Berry Gordy was the true genius behind Michael’s success. He’s the one who guided Michael in his early years and helped show him how to be a singer. All Quincy Jones has ever done is try to take credit for all of Michael’s achievements.

KingCorny93 Michael Jackson was a train headed to inevitable success. That talent was unstoppable. Quincy was lucky to be at the right place at the right time to hitch a ride. Literally anyone could've produced Michael, coz Michael creatively controlled everything anyway and just lacked the technical expertise.
