Not much progress but the start of always the hard part. If I were to start practice soldering without worrying about breaking anything, do you have any projects ideas that would be a good fit?

      1. Making your own instrument cables
      2. Cheap musical diy kits

I second the making your own instrument cables / mic cables route. That's how I got started with major soldering afternoons, etc.

@@risingedge3970 thanks for the tips. I'm intimidated by making instruments, but I guess the best way to learn is to fail and figure out why it failed. Will have to find some cheap instruments to make :)

Once you have basic soldering skills, Synthrotek has some under $20 instrument kits. They're little things that make video game sorts of sounds, but you can refine your skills without risking much.

Rakit Kits do some pretty easy instruments and their fairly cheap so may be a good option

Great video. I'm in the planning stages of making a modular system. Basically waiting to accumulate funds. I've been designing a case, reading, and watching every video I can find. I've got a decent soldering iron in the mail :-)

Nice! Which iron did you buy? I found out that mine's a bit sub-par...

I asked the guys at Synthrotek and Jeff suggested a Weller WES51, so I've got that coming. It's more than I wanted to spend ($91), but I figure if I eventually build a bunch of modules, then it will be worth it to have a good iron. Based on what you just said, I'm super glad I asked them, because I was about to order the same one I saw in your video.
I'm planning on doing as much of my modular from DIY kits as possible to keep the costs down. I'm thinking of selling my Moog DFAM to fund module kits ;-)
I'm going to build my case from plywood as two boxes of 6u by 84hp. It will take me years to fill that much space... But we're going to re-do the kitchen and the cabinet doors are really nice plywood, so I'll scavenge them and only need to buy rails and power.

    Hey GARDEN SOUND!
Any chance you could do a tutorial on how you edit your tutorial videos?
I saw you use Davinci Resolve in one of your videos, Id really like to see your process and thoughts.
    Thanks man

You don't think that would be boring? The editing part is super tedious...

To be honest I trust you could find some way to make it entertaining. Lol I have no idea how to edit videos, so I feel like I could learn something. (looking at starting a music production tutorial series)
      Just a suggestion :P
If you dont think itd be good dont worry about it.

I Like your videos man, but switching to a pointy soldering tip is a big mistake. the problem is surface are and heat transfer. The smaller (pointier) your tip worse it transfers heat. If you're having trouble with big solder blobs you need more flux. Your chisel tip when well cared for is one of the best tips, there is another tip that looks like a horse hoof that a lot of people like too.
The trick to getting a good solder joint fast is to heat the solder pad and the leg of the component at the same time. To help your iron heat both the pad and the leg at the same time you was a small (really small) amount of solder on the tip of your iron. Hold the tip on the joint for 1-2 seconds and then apply your solder on the OPPOSITE side from your iron. You want the pad and the leg to be what melts your solder. The pull the iron away first then the solder (almost at the same time but slightly staggered). If you are doing a connector it would be OK to solder one side before cleaning your tip, but cleaning your tip after every 2-3 joint is better. ALWAYS keep your tip clean.
Also checkout this on thingiverse it might make holding stuff while soldering easier.
