  • You probably know her best for her acting and her image. But she has had a very successful career as a producer, including Frida and Ugly Betty, Her latest is a long-gestating project based on Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. She talks to David Poland about the film and her career, from the beginning to today.
    Shot in Toronto, September 2014

    It's amazing how she is always inspired on what she does and that's because she truly believes in her project no matter how difficult it is. Salma is a corageous woman full of great and unique ideas. She always surprises me with her talent. The movie looks beautiful and special and I'm looking forward to watch it. Thanks for sharing the interview!

    I don't know how the film will go but Salma would definitely have a best seller if she narrated The Prophet and marketed it as an audiobook. Her voice was made for audio books and especially The Prophet.

    I wish the interview had focused more on the film, discussion of which is confined to a single (albeit interesting) anecdote at 26:00.

    For a long time, Gibran's The Prophet had been a required reading in many U.S. high schools. I had the pleasure of reading it in Arabic and English. The Prophet has been translated into over 40 different languages and has never been out of print. Gibran was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, writer, and philosopher. He was born in Bsharri, north Lebanon.

    DEFINITELY SEEING THIS. Khalil Gibrain has written some of the most beautiful language during his career, and love that Salma is not allowing "them/the industry" to put her or his philosophy in a box

    ThatLadyDray I wanted to send this to you yesterday regarding Gibran's speaking on *'Children'.* Please share your thoughts. coop4olitz, Cam, you too. Know that we hear & see so much of each other; because in the process of living we live so much of the same experiences; are shaped by so many of the same rites of passages... even our survival & our continued journey of thriving... *and beyond.*

    It's so sad that the business part of the film industry rules the art. How can there be art (brave, authentic, unusual) if you always have to go after what sells? I am so glad this movie happened, the same with Frida.

    • @TheLastHylianTitan
      @TheLastHylianTitan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +mychanneleeezey it's a difficult dance, money and art. i mean, historically, artists have always owed a lot to their rich patrons, especially in the Italian Renaissance. it's been a while since i've studied that period in art history, but what i do remember is that, thanks to a good economy, there was money in the hands of many rich merchants that was able to go to artists who in turn used that money to create many wonderful masterpieces that people still make a pilgrimage to see even today.
      it's been that way for ages - people with money give the artists the power to buy all they need and to be able to create what they do. they invest in the art, and the artist, and they choose what they want to invest in. and artists will always want to do their own thing, but sometimes, what they want to make won't pay off - at least, in their lifetime. and it's painful, because you can take the money and use it to make someone else's dream, or you can make what you want and risk having it not sell. art and money are tied together, and sometimes it's a difficult marriage. and yet sometimes, both work together to bring us something wonderful.

    The interviewer needs more experience, he does not read the guest very well, especially during moments where the guest is about to spill their deepest emotions. @8:22 he interrupts her very personal comment.

    Has The Triumvirate been asked to distribute this film: Oprah, Tyler, Whoopi? Or Matt and Laurie Crouch of Gener8Xion Entertainment? If Marianne Williamson and Hillary had 1/2 a brain between them THEY would distribute this film. GUARANTEED mind bending, thinking crowd pleasing vote getter. Like I said, HALF a brain. Houston TX awaits. "Prophet, tell me of Nov. 4th . . . "
