    Love my 2004 KTM 450 EXC but it’s been a long road of little issues, luckily never engine problems. It’s street legal, electric start, 6 speed, digital dash that i prefer over the new ktm pencil thin one, and absolutely rips. Got it August 2020 for $1600 with 2100 miles and 85hrs. It had a GPR steering stabilizer, radiator fan, and everything worked so i felt I got a good deal especially during these times.

      Not sure where you live, but maybe that price difference takes the sting away a bit. Every market is different and its all flat here with minimal trails and no mountains so these bikes are not as common here as other states when I was comparing prices. The bike does rip ; )

    That isn't a weep hole on the side of the head. You can shoot compressed air into there before you remove the spark plug to make sure no dirt gets into the engine

    My first real bike was a 2004 KTM 450 EXC that I paid $1500 for off my neighbor. It needed full suspension rebuild but ran great and had no other real issues. Between 2003-2007 they used the RFS engine which is one of the most reliable KTM motors ever made. They have a huge cult following

      @@jpaul5387 Thats amazing, I put a tusk dual sport kit on my KTM to make it street legal but haven't gone through the steps of registering it for the street yet. It really does an amazing job in all terrain and I've ridden it on the street to get to other trails and it handles well on the street too. I wouldn't trade mine for a newer KTM if I had the chance. It's just such a great reliable and super fast bike that I'd have no need to.

    It'd be interesting to do another compression check to see if the compression issue was due to the leaking fuel. If not then there may still be a low compression problem to solve.

    • @jamesdougan8789
      @jamesdougan8789 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      if fuel was leaking into the cylinder it would raise the compression by taking up space and sealing rings the biggest problem is the chunk of metal he found on the spark plug (bit of piston, or valve seat or valve after contact with piston maybe) don't ya think but no let's try to start it harder and for a longer time 🤦‍♂

    • @GradenGmoney44

    There are also two screens in the lower part of the case. Do check the engine chain tensioner and valve clearance is all you need to do. There is a small leaver to decompress the engine to start easier. It’s hooked up to the cylinder head and the leaver is above the clutch leaver. Peace on dirt and thanks for the video,,,,hey Guy Parrett !

    When you didnt find the choke, that rly hurt tbh. And talking about that weep hole, its for if water gets around the spark plug. And the bikes have auto decompression, so if you struggled to kick it. Thats either a problem or u cant kick very hard XD. And giving the bike any sort of throttle with the engine off will instantly flood it hahaha. The bikes also will run without a battery

  • @Mr.Bearded.Mechanic
    @Mr.Bearded.Mechanic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Weird EXC 450. No rear light, no dashboard. But the electric starter tells it is an EXC. SX at that time does not have an electric starter. Choke is where the big hole on the left side of the gas tank. You have to reach underneath the gas tank to pull it out, to push it you can use the hole. I had in the past a 2004 SX 525. That was a breeze to kickstart. Basically, you find with the kickstarter the compression stroke (the hardest point to push) pull the decompression lever and move over the top dead center a bit, release the lever and kickstart it. You have to use the decompressor lever (that little lever on the top of the clutch reservoir cap) which needs to be connected to around where the camshaft ends (right side), it pushes down one of the exhaust valve levers. The carburetor has a squirt jet, so go easy on the quick throttle before startup, you can fold the intake port easily. The water pump is at the cylinder head lefthand side, attached to the end of the cam gear shaft, seal and the bearing can go wrong without any symptom, or at least on mine it went bad, luckily the bearing stayed together and did not ruin the engine.

    RFS is a good engine. if it has a lot of hours on it it might need valves, they had similar problem as Yamaha on early models. valves are too soft. Starter issues are quite common tough, usually brushes or ground related. Over heating usually a bad waterpump, open up and check wear on impeller and leaky o-rings

    2002 RFS engines used the circlip. 2003 on up used a nut like all other bikes.

  • @jimtitt3571
    @jimtitt3571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's easier if you either know what you are doing and get the manuals, the RFS engines have an automatic decompressor as well as the manual one you found in the end. Check it's working and been replaced, there was an upgrade around 2003 (that the frame number says it's a 2002 means it could be a 2003 450 or 400 but built 2002, my 450 is like this). It's also got an aftermarket header which was common on the 2001 400's to cure a stumble off idle, it did nothing however. 2000 to 2004 RFS engines had a dual header joining by the rear shock.
    Once you've got the carb back to factory settings and checked the decompressors (both) work properly then it's a coil and the ECU, you might have to get an SX one but no difference on the 2002 models, the 2003 model EXC the limit was dropped from 13000 to 10,500 or so for reliability.
    Anyone who thinks they are junk; they won the world enduro championships 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 on that garbage.

    • @jimtitt3571
      @jimtitt3571 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffro7p202 You need to back the exhaust valves off 2 or 3 turns to get a true reading, the auto decompressor holds them slightly open until the engine gets above ca. 1500 rpm.

    At the beginning of the video the carb is dumping too much gas into the cylinder and its trying to hydro-lock. That's why the starter is hanging up.

    That's the EXC 450, the choke is on the left where the whole is on the Gas tank, I have the MXC450, they are basically the same thing, the MXC450 is the desert racing model of the EXC, and Carburetor always leacks gas, that's completely normal, even in a new Carburetor rebuild, The MXC450 hase a completely different frame, and hase a 6 Speed Transmission, same engine design, but bigger Transmission

    Can't wait to see it in action. I've been wanting a KTM 500 EXC. Just can't justify 10k on a 2017/2018 lol. I'll have to stick to my DRZ400 for a bit :D

    I never liked KTMs either but if that is an EXC my 04 is pretty quick with loads of grunt and an all around sweet bike n even beat other 450 motocross bikes that were much newer in straight up from the line races!!!

    I just got a 2006 Honda crf 150f and I went to chase the oil and it had a little smell of gas comin from it. Is that normal? The new oil has a little smell of gas aswell after riding a bit. Anyone know what’s wrong or if anything

    KTM issues you got there i would really try out another CDI if you can to try, i have had bikes that did run but all gave a weird issues on the spark specialy when getting hot, i had these CDI repaired by an specialist for about $250 as it seems on older bikes the solder joints incased in the CDI get loose in time..then if that is not the issue try another carby..
