    I worked on the design of the crew controls.
    In 1999, I met Buzz Aldrin at a party in Beverly Hills when we were discussing the Apollo controls -- which were all designed by aircraft manufacturers and thus only supported 4DOF. So when I mentioned a 6DOF interface I had simulated in computer games and tested on kids who mastered them within minutes, Buzz handed me his card and asked if I'd like to work with him on the design for the Orion.
    Since I never tried to get any type of Security Clearance I was happy to meet him at his apartment for regular discussions which he'd take into his meetings. And this contributed as a Consultant for his company Skycraft Enterprises.
    I was pleased to see it finally fly around the Moon but more importantly the upcoming manned flights where these controls will finally be tested.
    While the spacecraft is essentially automated, my contributions were the two 3D Joysticks you see on either side -- in case they need manual control.

    wait wait wait.... everything on glass... so you are telling me that there will not be any physical backup system? I would prefer a backup physical switchboard or even tiny touch buttons... too many variables. I did hear the guy say that there are physical switches around the display... i hope those are the vital controls.

      I worked on the Orion crew controls with my contribution being those 2 3D Joysticks you see on either side for manual control.
      These in conjunction with minimal data from an Inertial Measurement Unit provide the necessary minimal controls for manual flight in any situation.
      Even when the Gemini 12 computers failed, Buzz Adrin was able to hand calculate a rendezvous with the Agena Docking target.. The crew is always trained on Orbital Mechanics sufficient to solve problems even without help from home (or a computer)😂.

    Hey NASA TV, what was the point of the music in this video? It just distracted from what the speaker was saying. Isn't flying into space interesting enough for you? Do you really feel you need to jazz it up a little with music?

    hmm..i rather would like a physical switch that doesnt work then a touchscreen that is not reacting. =)
    Joke aside..when that screen malfunctions..all functions are not acessable anymore..or is there a backup plan?

    • @AideTechBot
      @AideTechBot 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd think they put all the critical mission switches on the physical boards. The displays would be just for information and whatnot. Remember, this is the space industry, redundancy is the key to everything.

      Pretty sure NASA uses touch screens that are a little better caliber than iPads made by slave labor in china :P Not to mention, i'm sure the astronaut gloves probably have magnet in the tips for a little better response.

    Did NASA decide against a ground landing? I have not heard them talk about landing bags in a while

    • @macieksoft
      @macieksoft 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For ground landing you need a very large open and flat area near equator + its preatty dangerous because you must have a retro rockets that will slow down the capsule a secound before it hit the ground. Water absorb the kinetic energy and makes landing much softer.

    The only problem I have with computers rather than manual/physical switches is : what happens if the computer freezes?

    • @tripjj8662

      @macieksoft 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You should make a very simple software + use multiple computers. IIRC Space Shuttle used as many as 5GPCs.

      A "frozen OS" is not a computer which has stopped working but one caught in a loop. The spacecraft OS is written specifically to escape all loops and if necessary restart automatically. Just like they did with the Apollo 11 LEM descent when it errored several times -- and rebooted mid-flight.
      Unlike Earth OSes, it is possible never to get trapped in loops. Too bad MS doesn't know that.

      I hate to say this, but it won't be Nasa because its budget is abysmally small and constantly shrinking, it wont be us here in Europe because ESA hasn't really figured out our complicated reentry capsule - bullet thing yet, which means we won't be having manned missions any time soon, and it's probably not going to be spaseX either, because it's a company, and unless they can figure out a way to sell space exploration, there is no way they can finance the whole thing. It's probably going to be someone that already operates manned missions like China or Russia with some modified version of existing, more reliable spacecraft. Especially Russia has a good chance at going to mars first. If I had to bet I would bet Russia in the late 2020s

    • @zachlewis1453
      @zachlewis1453 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have plenty of time to make a habitation module, as we won't go to Mars until the mid-2030s.

      Well, check out the NASA's videos, it is in there. I think that they are studying at least two designs and procedures on going to Mars. but they have time to work that out. Going to Mars with a manned mission is very dangerous and they will have to get it right or all will be lost and nobody wants that.

      Remember that the computers do not have as much processing power as a move phone or home computer. They are light and energy efficient. Not powerful. They don't have to do as many calculations as Skyrim or KSP needs.

    • @kg4lod
      @kg4lod 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theamazingknight5472 Actually, they're chosen to be as physically large as practical to minimize vulnerability to radiation. The Orion computer is a PowerPC 750FX series CPU which has transistors that are 130nm in scale, approximately 10 times bigger (100x the area) than current CPU's. Bigger transistors are *less* energy efficient and the weight difference between computer generations is insignificant. The Orion computer actually weighs about the same as the Apollo guidance computer since most of the weight is in the enclosure, shielding, connectors, and wire harnesses.
