Jumpscares NEVER get me, but Subnautica did it flawlessly. Using my little seamoth to look for base parts, and with no moonpool fragments anywhere, I had no choice to look in places I didn't dare to go. My PDA chirped. "Detecting multiple leviathan-class lifeforms in this region. Are you sure whatever you're doing is worth it?" Yeah. I NEED a moonpool. I want to upgrade my seamoth, and I've checked every wreck I came across in the safer regions to no success. I pressed on, shuddering as I heard the distant howls of leviathans, stalking through the darkness... but I knew there HAD to be at least a wreck or two out here. Suddenly, it was silent like the grave. For a region teeming with reapers, it was disturbingly quiet. Like the game itself is urging me to leave while I still had the chance. Then, from below, I was snatched. The reaper bellowed as it crushed my seamoth effortlessly, and with no moonpool, I had no means to get the perimeter defense module. I was trapped in the jaws of death itself. With my seamoth destroyed, I clambered into the nearest wreck, knowing I was on borrowed time. My oxygen was running low, and I could hear its roars as it circled the wreck. This game TRULY terrified me
@viscerface But your video didn't fail to deliver on what makes it so horrifying, it was spot-on in every regard! The hopelessness, the tension, the build-up... the denial. I can't wait to see how the second game turns out!
My final Leviathan encounter will forever live in my head(Spoilers ahead). I had just cured Karrah and was returning to my cyclops. Only to find that it had been mobbed with lava larve and was on 4% power. Ok, no big deal, I have a thermal module. I get out of the Cyclops to kill the larve. Only to be swatted aside, and I realized the Sea Dragon had followed me to my cyclops! I raced back to my cyclops and set speed to maximum. The sea dragon following close behind. It had brought down my Cyclops to 50% hp but I managed to escape, kill the larve, recharge the cyclops and get back to the surface. To this day, that encounter haunts my nightmare, the roar of the Sea Dragon, its vicious fireballs, Abandon Ship blaring in my ears, alarms and fires, this game is a masterpiece.
I don't believe that they accidentally created one of the best horrors in the game history. I believe that it was fully intentional but even if not fully it was always on the back of the developers minds.
I mean I would agree except they came out and stated they never intended to make a horror game. It’s just that the sea is naturally scary. that’s why they tried making below zero brighter and less “scary”
Subnautica is the only game that instills me a genuine terror. Every time I saw or heard the leviathan, my heart was skipping the bit. Eventually, I got over my fear of reapers and the depth. Though there's no way I'm going far into the Dead Zone. Ever. It gives me nightmares
Video game essays really suit you. You have a great way of breaking things down and making them engaging. You definitely could "dive even deeper" and explore this type of content more. It’s clear you’ve got a knack for this.
What was also scary? The countdown to the Aurora’s imminent explosion. Hearing the glitching countdown, watching it blow up and hearing the clicks of the radiation now spreading into the safe shallows… knowing that the place you need to go to would be an irradiated tomb that’s surrounded by reaper leviathans. That’s some fear, there.
I remember playing this during early development. Its one of my favorite games of all time. Hell my very first twitch stream was of this gem. Now that i got a new PC im finally going to revisit Subnautica and Below Zero just in time for Subnautica 2 to be available. A 35 year old Navy man can still be scared of the deep ocean. And love it just the same.
I think the scariest things to encounter in this gamer are reaper leviathan and ghost leviathan. Reaper scarss me more because I usually use sonar on the seamoth so when I'm exploring in an area in the dark and use sonar just to sea the outline of reaper leviathan in the distance sends chills down my spine. Ghost leviathan is my favorite but also scary. You only encounter it in darker areas so you just see this bioluminescent creature screaming and charging towards you in the dark just is cool and scary. 20/10 game.
I only got scared twice in my playthrough, both because I got teleported by a warped & I wasn’t prepared. I wasn’t afraid of the reaper, I just thought the ghost leviathan was cool but called it a over-sized worm, & tried to kill the Sea Dragon with my Drill arm
Any game with large bodies of cloudy water that contain hostile fauna is by default considered the best horror game ever. Crysis, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, GTA etc. I still remember trying to skin the maneater shark in Far Cry 3. It took me 20 minutes to lure it as close to the shore as possible, 20 more minutes to wait for other sharks to get as far away as possible, and 10 more minutes to brace myself for the dive.
@viscerface It was just as scary for me, if not scarier in some biomes due to the desolate arctic atmosphere. Like the Arctic and the Tree Spires. And I still consider Tree Spires to be the second scariest biome after Void.
i played the game in beta as a 7 year old, went to the aroura because i thought it was a good idea, gets jumped by two reapers and now has thalassophobia
Shout out to Appsro and Neebs from neebs gaming for being the people who contact you from altera to tell you about the rocket. Funny and amazing people
if you want a really hard challenge, knowing you beat the hardest mod, try it with having to capture every fish, and kill every leviathan while starting in the void
at the same time the game kinda makes you want to act fast due to the infection and the emperor calling you, so kinda you want to stay safe but at the same time you want to act fast
The thing that horrifies the most is best described by my first experience with my least favorite biome, The Blood Kell zone, many players first time is the entrance to it which had a drop off from 100 M to fucking 600, granted I was in prawn so nothing can easily kill me but when I suddenly dropped several hundred meters with no jet upgrade of grapple arm I was terrified, especially cause of that thumping music and weird looking vines with blood pustules and weird ass crab squid hybrid things , Horror and terror are two different things, horror is a reaction, terror is a state of mind brought on by being removed from your comfort zones
another truly scary thing about the game is the fact that you dont ever obtain something that makes you *truly* safe from the big scary water creatures, yes the stasis rifle can stun levithans and make for an easy kill, but will that always work when you run into one?
i have never actually encountered a reaper since i was so scared that my friend had to do it for me but the rest of the game, i did by myself and honestly, none of the other leviathans really scared me (and the sea dragon)
I wish the leviathans could roam more because now that i know where all the reapers and stuff are its kind of boring because i can just avoid it and never deal with them
To be honest, I never found this game scary, thats maybe because you can dodge reapers without a seaglide, it builds tension but the actual experience is just a leviathan attacking you then leaving.
It’s funny really, they weren’t even trying and you can see it in there development. It was just supposed to be a survival crafting game but people are just that afraid of water And there’s no greater evidence then the reception to bellow zero
I made a observation base right next to the western ghost leviathan of the grand reef They are total push overs lol You can either grapple on top of then with a prawn, outspeed them, pop into one of the many caves in the area Reapers are easy to dodge Sea dragons are slow
