  • This august the new 18th studio album of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds will be released. The Top 5 Records channel will celebrate it by a series of reviews going through the full discography of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds leading up to the new album Wild God.
In 1986 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released their third studio album; Kicking Against The Pricks. It is a collection of cover songs from artists like Lou Reed and Mickey Newbury. Is it any good?

I think this album made much more sense when it was released. Alt country (for example) wasn't much of a thing back then and for many listeners this was their first introduction to some of these songs.

I agree. This album made me as a rebelling teenage punk make peace with my parents' music and appreciate musical legends like John Lee Hooker, Gene Pitney and Mickey Newbury. It was because of this album that I bought my first Johnny Cash-record. And it was because of this album in particular and The Bad Seeds in general that the way biggest punkband ever here in Denmark, Sort Sol, in the late 80s began playing songs by Bobbie Gentry, The Walker Brothers, Elvis, Tex Ritter and Kenny Rogers and made it cool.

This for sure is a great, great album. After the firstborn is dead it was the second Nick Cave album that caught my attention and with Tender Prey and the good son my most played. Following your moniker I suggest a top 5 cover records. Bowie's Pinups, Siouxsie through the looking glass and tori amos will be in. For the curiosity I'd call in Camper van Beethoven's full album cover Tusk as well, head on with the Flaming Lips version of Dark side of the moon.. Cheers from Germany Klaus

@@KS-yy2fu good idea to do a Top 5 cover albums! I don’t think I’d put Kicking Against The Pricks and Pinups in there though… Perhaps A Touch of Schmillson in the Night?

I like the record...It was so different at the time. Muddy Water, I;m going to kill etc etc, by the time I get to phoenix, the singer. black betty are pretty great...... some of those tunes were the first time I had heard them.I also saw this tour in San Fransisco and they did an in house at a record store across the street from the club they were playing that night. at the in store they played yellow polkadot bikini. seeing the "gothic king " sing that song at that time was amazing and humorous.

'Black Betty" slaps. Love the 5.1 Remix Mick Harvey did. Great line-up, great covers selection. Great video. Keep 'em coming.
