I personally loved this pedal. I had it for many years and find that getting a phaser sound I like out of my Helix is much harder than out of this BOSS.
Dude I have the same problem. I have a phase 90 on my pedalboard. When I try to dial in similar sounds with the helix the phase effect is either too subtle or too over the top.
@@B-Dubba-U These comments made me feel better about my pedal collection, maybe 50 or 60 pedals. Had more than one non-musician ask why I needed them all with all the technology out now. I have just loved pedals since the late 90s.
@@scramblesthedeathdealerI always had this problem with the chorus in my Korg AX 300 G. I ended up using the modulation delay as a substitute for the chorus.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. The Helix has left the phasing department really abandoned. They need to model at least something like the Boss Ph-2 with their 10 and 12 stage modes or even better a Boss Ph-1r. They sound wonderful and their circuitry is not at complicated as modeling a digital algorithm like the one present in the Ph-3. By the way, Fender has just done it in the TMP... and as far a I heard in a video demo... sounds trippy.
This is the best demo I've seen of the PH-3 and after going back and forth on whether or not to buy it this helped me decide to pull the trigger. Thanks so much!
This was hands down the best demo of this pedal I’ve ever seen. It’s capable of producing some amazing sounds. Your playing and choices of tones really brought that out. My only complaint is the same as so many others who’ve played through it-the noticeable volume loss when engaging the pedal. That’s the only reason mine is sitting on a shelf. Thanks for renewing my interest in it.
Yes! These pedals are so off the radar its totally bonkers. Ive had the original MIJ PH-1 before and it was great but had issues from the previous owner tinkering with it. So one day, about 25 years ago I got a PH-3. Its been on my board since!
Hey Leon bet you didn't know it has tap tempo and you can connect an fs5u pedal to it to tap in the tempo of the phaser . Also an expression pedal can be connected which is super awesome .this pedal is phenomenal
tera echo possibly. However, almost all boss pedals were covered by youtube and I cant even call one “forgotten”. BOSS in general is forgotten in favor of other boutique brands. 500 series and gt 1000 are very powerful, but still nobody has time to study these units , unfortunately
I love how phasers smooth over 3rd, aug or diminished chord voicings when you use distortion. Great for prog rock or metal. Although you use it a bit heavier than I would, but it is a phaser demo. In the Extreme song "There is no God" (Waiting for the Punchline), Nuno uses a phase that takes that song to a next level.
I'm usually of the "you can never have too much of a good thing" school of thought. But with this unit, I liked the more subtle thickening effect you used at the start. Except like you that step mode really brought on the nostalgia. Nice one.
This was my first Phaser pedal, i blame Mike Einziger as he had two of them. I ended up getting an MXR Phase 90 not long after so I could have dual Phasers. And in my humble opinion the Phase 90 is the greatest modulation pedal ever made. But there's no doubt this thing has some unique modes.
I think on the warmth he switches between both BOSS phasers for different settings between intro/verse and chorus. Very inspiring what he does with effects in general and how they manage to build their songs in a way that makes it possible to survive the tap dance.
back in 2009 I had both a ph-3 and ph-2 and they are worlds apart. The ph-3 sounds like a toy with a really thin brittle mid range. The ph-2 has an aggressive punchy midrange.
I was just looking randomly at this pedal in my local website and thinking to purchase it as it’s been months since my last pedal. Most probably gonna get it after this demo. Thank you!
I forget which green Boss phaser I had...some bugger pinched it, but it was my 2nd favourite after the metal zone (and I don't care what anyone says) I could always get a great tone with my mt-2 and phaser...so there 🤣
I didn't like the Boss Phaser pedal even back in the 80's (don't remember what it was called back then). To be honest though, I wasn't too much into phaser pedals even back then...hahaha!
👍 PH3 MODE 4 is ok ish , " fall / rise " functions r the best ......modes 8, 10 & 12 completely tone suck 🤮........& EHX SMALL STONE ( DIP SWITCH IN DOWN POSTION ).......R MY FAVES 🎸
I get that you tried clickbate by writing it might be bad. I actually is! It´s nasal, has no punch to it and basically sounds like it´s having a cold. As do all Boss Phasers. MXR 90 block logo or bust!
Yeah it's definitely a sound you wouldn't want to have on for an entire song it gets kind of annoying. But I can see turning it on and off as a cool effect.
The step, rise and fall modes have that ”cool effect for an intro” type a vibe but you’d never use it for anything else. Most modulation pedals are really grating on the ears and should be used in moderation.
How dare you Leon. Call the nicest color Boss pedal the worst. I've seen this a couple of times listed and really urging to buy it just for the color. But then I read again that it's a "phase shifter" and check demos and realize that I don't need another phaser let alone one that sounds like this (my phase 95 is far more to my taste). This feels more like a pedal for keyboard player. I really dislike how this sounds most of the time like it's just creating high pitched noise to mask your playing. Is this really a flanger where you can turn the feedback all the way off?

I see BOSS phasers in a lot of people's pedalboard's. Like, at least as much as I see that MXR EVH phaser.
Personally I like their Super phaser.

Tracy G used to use the step phaser as a really cool effect when he was in Dio!
I used to have one of these on my board. I liked it a lot
I love Boss phasers, but I much prefer the PH-1r and PH-2. The additional modes on the PH-3 can be fun, but they are pretty much useless musically.
The additional modes are very useful for certain situations like adding movement to a drone - Kind of depends on the style of music you play.
I like how digital BOSS phase shifter 3 is

Maybe some more current production ones nobody talks about - stuff like the BF-3, DS-1X, OD-1X, etc
RV-3, RV-5 and CE-5 would be cool. Or even the old CS-3 to see if it is really as bad, as the internet often claims.
I did the BF-3 recently funnily enough. Need to try the X series next. @@pinheadgringo

Fall, Rise and Step are always fun to mess with! PH-3 ain't that bad, but I much prefer my good old PH-2🤘
The Step mode is so cool, but yeah, the PH-2 sounds better, overall.
Oh, it's like the one in the GX700 what with different amounts of stages and the step thing. Nice. And another brilliant demonstration.

I thought Mike had 2 PH-2s, but I could be wrong, pretty sure he also used the Phase 90.

You pretty much nailed the No Quarter tone even though JPJ plays it on a Rhodes...🤘😎🎸

Hope you enjoy it!
Such wacky, underrated pedal. I love the 10 and the fall settings. Add some res, dirt, and some reverb and you're getting potentially wacky.
Nice review Leon… quite a bit of character in that pedal. Yeah with the dirt it was the 80s flyby. Nice chops buddy keep them coming.
Coupled together with a fuzz pedal you then get the Isley Brothers Who's that Lady and Summer Breeze lead tone
It's got that sizzle for sure. How great is Ernie btw?!
I've got their greatest hits album its in my top ten
Never cared.for this effect but you make it sound amazing.
My favourite phaser is an Ibanez 8 or 9 series. This one is right up there with it and use it a lot.
The boss ph2 super phaser was my favorite it didn't have the step mode but it was analog & didn't have any volume loss
Dig this pedal, it's very cool with the expression pedal as well.
I had the DOD FX20 back in the day. You're making me want to pick one up from Reverb and rebuild my old board lol
It's a rabbit hole, beware!
I have all 4 Boss phasers and a PSK PAS-2 Boss clone (well, the housing is a clone, the circuit may be one of a kind, not sure).
Ha, you got me Leon! GREAT pedal - no way that's the worst BOSS! LOL.
its not to bad... the only real problem with the ph3 is that the evh and mxr phase 90's are out there 😅
I forget which green Boss phaser I had...some bugger pinched it, but it was my 2nd favourite after the metal zone (and I don't care what anyone says) I could always get a great tone with my mt-2 and phaser...so there 🤣
One to match the green guitar!
Its got a vibe - i like it.
A phaser being green breaks my brain 😂
Hahaha mine too. PHASERS ARE ORANGE!!!!
@@LeonToddGreen is for overdrives
We should not forget about the black phaser...
does this phaser have a lot of tone suck on your signal?
Definitely not! I have one, and it works pretty well!
Boss effects are always sleepers, you can definitely do the EVH thing with this but this does a while lot more although a stereo one would be good
What do you mean when you say it's a sleeper? Do you mean it's awesome but people just don't know
I have never bonded with this one
Step modulation effects of any sort should be criminalized
Porno for Pyros PETS sound....LoL...It s not too bad, I could find some uses for it. Great video as always Leon, Thanks mate :)
There's a band I haven't heard for ages!
@@LeonTodd Yeah, they are great :)
I need one of those!

Super fun! No such thing as a bad BOSS pedal is there?
No quarter !

I own 4.
🤙🏼
Has Boss even made a bad pedal, like ever?
The Van Halen worship is getting cloying. It's a decent phaser.
PH2 all day.
