    Part of the desert island test should be which typewriter are you trying to swim with over your head after the boat goes down. 😅
    The paper stock test has been important for me as I've found that the water color postcard barely make it through rollers and almost never like to be typed on. I've had to find a specific paper stock at the local art store that is thin enough for typewriters, but still thick enough to hold up to water color painting for holiday cards. Nice to see I'm not the only one with this in mind!

    Typewriters are honestly the best thing to happen to word processors.

    • @RabbiSteve

      This comment reminds of something that the guy who sold me my first (at least in many years, and the one that started me on my new typewriter journey) typewriter in 2019, my Hermes 2000. He’s a teacher at a university and teaches creative writing. On eBay, where I found him and his refurbished vintage typewriters, he had written a little essay, which is what sold me on wanting to purchase from him.
      And in that essay, he called the typewriter, “the perfect *thought* processor”.
      He said the computer is still the better “*word* processor”: for editing, final drafts, formatting, re-writing, etc.
      But for getting your thoughts directly from your brain, to your fingers to paper, the typewriter is unsurpassed.
      Since that time, I have found this to be true: the pure creativity or first draft experience is best on a typewriter.
      So, I like that distinction between “*thought* processor” and “*word* processor”.
      The typewriter for processing my *thoughts* is best for me.
      But once the thoughts are down, the computer is best for processing those words. For obvious reasons (cut & paste, formatting functions, etc).
      Which means your comment is still true: because if one does their *thought* processing done on the typewriter first, and only then, bring it over to the digital world, to re-write, edit and shape, one finds, that indeed, “typewriters are honestly the best thing to happen to word processors.” For me, totally replacing the computer for creative writing. And allowing the computer to be used as a tool for shaping and refining, at which job it’s much better.

    My Adler Tippa S (cursive) and Hermès Rocket are my go-to portables. But thermal typewriters have their place too. I bartend and the servers love it when I bring my 1980 Silver Reed EXD 10 to work, which is a rebranding of a Brother portable. Everyone loves typing on it, and it actually gets good usage as specials gets typed on it and it’s easier to use than the label maker which forever gets misplaced.

    Hi! Does anyone have any recommendations for a newer manual typewriter? When writing with a computer I have the temptation to get distracted, and would really just like to cut that out. But I’d like a newer typewriter so I don’t need to deal with fixing up an old one. Obviously new to the whole typewriter world lol all help would be greatly appreciated. As said before, much rather prefer a manual, so I won’t be in need of electricity for it either.

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Consider getting a professionally restored vintage machine! They make "newer" typewriters for crafting purposes, but they're not built to last and do not really feel nice to type on for longer pieces. There are several professional repair techs who take well-built, vintage machines and professionally restore them so they're in perfect working order! I highly recommend: Lucas Dul of Typewriter Chicago (he has a website under Lucas Dul Typewriters), Iron Fox Typewriters, The Type Space, Nashville Typewriter, Jot and Tittle Typewriters, and Mr. and Mrs. Vintage. All of them have their own websites with professionally restored, beautifully functional machines!

    • @inlovewithgoats1092
      @inlovewithgoats1092 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not true, no matter whether you call it a fact.
      Qwerty was invented to prevent jamming, yes. But this was not done by slowing the typist down. Qwerty is designed so that the common letters, especially ones that commonly are combined, are far away from each other.
      In real life typing, qwerty is no slower than other layouts, but it is significantly less healthy to type on

    Hi! Thank you for this very informative video. May I ask if Underwood 319 is worth to buy this year? Is it electrical or not? and how can I know if it's still working? Hence, they're also selling other typewriter named Marathon 2000 DLX and Marathon 300 T Portable Typewriter. However, I don't know what to choose between them since I don't know anything about typewriters but I want to buy at least one of them. They're sale for only $35.39. What do you think? Can you please help me? Thank you for your time!

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! So an Underwood 319 would be from the 1970s- it's a manual so no electricity required. It's tough to know how to know what to look for when it comes to possible repairs- I have another video on this channel called Typewriter 101. Check that out because I show you all the things to look for in a typewriter to see if it's working. As far as price- most people would say that's a fair price for any typewriter. If it's in good condition, and it's something you love- go for it!

This channel seems wonderful though and I seriously admire your passion for these typewriters... they are pretty cool 😎! Thanks in advance!

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! It really depends. If you don't mind spending more, you can buy refurbished typewriters from typewriter professionals (yes, they exist!). These will be fully serviced and repaired mechanical typewriters usually in funky colors, and you'll have quality packaging for shipping because they're professionals. The issue with buying typewriters from resale sites like ebay or shopgoodwill is that you can't always guarantee that shipping will be done properly. Typewriters can be dropped during shipping, and it can be detrimental to a typewriter! If you look for local places, like goodwill, thrift stores, antique shops, you can usually find a typewriter or two and sometimes you get lucky on price. Unfortunately, they often need repairs or adjustments which can be a rabbit hole. Same with craigslist or facebook marketplace buys. My suggestion would totally depend on your price range, what it needs to do, and type of typewriter. If you need an electric typewriter for filling out forms and such, those aren't typically serviced by repair techs, but can often be found on shopgoodwill. I helped someone find one on their but it didn't work when they got it. If you're looking for a manual typewriter, but don't want to do repair and have a nice budget- go with a professionally serviced one. I highly suggest Tampa Typewriter Co, Unplug Typewriter Co, Colombo Collection Typewriters, Charlie Foxtrot, The Brown Fox Typewriter Co- just to name a few that I've talked to through Facebook or Instagram. If it helps, I also have a video on "Collection Curation" that also talks about how to buy typewriters. I hope this help!
