Is there a mid-gauge machine somewhere on the market that has a regular stick-like sponge bar?

Yes, there is a new mid-gauge machine currently being made by Taitexma. It's a metal bed machine with a "regular" sponge bar. AND A RIBBER!

Using any knitting machine, we are limited to the number of needles on the machine. The LK-150 has 150 needles. The widest piece you can knit depends on your yarn and gauge. We have a tool that helps you determine this.

Just enter your gauge and how many needles you have available.

whats the equivalent gauge, i.e. 9mm or 6mm

9mm and 6mm refers to the distance between the needles on a knitting machine.
9mm would be a US size 13 hand knitting needle, although a 9mm bulky machine can knit a wide range of yarn weight with the equivalent hand knitting needle size from approx US 8 - 13.
