This tutorial has really helped me. I have just been bought this for my 60th birthday today. I have been hankering after a knitting machine for years and especially recently as my hands get sore after a couple of hours hand knitting. I remember sitting watching my Nana using her machine in the 70s and being mesmerised.
I will look at your other videos for more advice, Thank you.

The yellow ruler is for measuring swatches. Silver Reed made 3 rulers one for each gauge, the other two are blue & green. They're supposed to be faster/more accurate way of determining gauge than using a plain ruler, YMMV.

The LK150 is used by a number of knitwear designers such as Susan Guagliumi who has written a number of books about hand manipulated stitches and has a DVD about the LK 150 as well as a TH-cam channel. The Machine Knitting Monthly always has patterns for LK 150.

About 60 years ago, my father bought my mother an incredibly expensive knitting machine - probably one of the first made - but the store he bought it from went bankrupt immediately afterward so my mother was never able to take the class required to use it. The poor thing sat around for years and was finally thrown away. I've always been intrigued by the idea, though, and have wondered if one would be fun to have. I'm left handed, and tend to get things turned around when I try to knit by hand! Thank you so much for this and other tutorials. It gives me confidence, and I think I'll start saving up for one.

Thank you for keeping this skill alive! I used Brother knitting machine about 35 years ago. Was a lot of fun. Then study, work, career, all the boring stuff LOL All those years I was dreaming of having knitting machine again. Just bought Silver Reed SK 840. It's standard gauge machine. It's so wonderful to spend my days learning. Love your videos.

I am a hand knitter and thought "how hard can it be to machine knit?". I got a brother standard gauge to learn on and there was quite a learning curve. I was always wanting yarn and could only find it on line. I do love what it can do with the card reader and finger weight yarn. But sometimes you just want to go to the store and grab some yarn for a quick project so I bought the LK150 second hand. All the parts were there in plastic bags. The only thing I had to do was replace the sponge bar that disintegrated. So far I have done some holiday crafts, pumpkins and gnomes.

Certainly not a dying hobby as people realise they joy of machine knitting and all the knitting groups on Facebook welcome dozens of members daily. There are so many knitters around the world and the second hand market for machines and accessories is booming. I have enjoyed machine knitting since about 1982 and as now retired I can spend more time enjoying making my own stuff that actually fits knowing it hasn’t come from a sweat factory 🙂

I am SO glad I found you!!! I just bought my first knitting machine (off of Ebay) and I'm super excited to get it and start making things! I've been a beginner tonintermediate hand knitter most of my life, but I'm looking to start making more items to sell and give as gifts. The machine should help me towards that goal. Oh and I bought this same model machine so your videos will be a Godsend while I'm learning. Thank you for your great approach to teaching!

I’ve had my lk150 for a few years. It was a $40 yard sale find. All it needed was a sponge bar- it even came with the original vhs tape 😂
I’ve made sweaters, scarves, ear warmers, wraps fingerless mitts and hats. I’m in Canada so cold weather accessories are always welcomed!
I lucked out and found an inexpensive fc6 carriage for mine but haven’t played with it yet.

Thank you so much for this unboxing and tutorial. I’m 67 years old and contemplating on buying a second hand knitting machine but after doing some research on all the kinds available nowadays, I’ve decided that in the end, it’s more efficient and practical to spend on a new one instead. This way it’s guaranteed that all parts are intact or replaceable and new technology available on these units are up to date. Watching your video about LK150 confirms that idea. Please post more videos on this model and techniques in using this… you’ve earned a new subscriber 🙏🏻

I am so glad to see you working on an LK150. I didn't know that you recommended it as beginner machine, but I just bought one for that very reason! So far I have made a few swatches and one hat that turned out a bit too big (self drafted the pattern after watching a few TH-cam videos...) The issue was not that the gauge was off, but that I seriously overestimated the size I needed (and also made a MAJOR miscalculation on the length but that was all on me! And easy enough to fix by ripping out the extraneous rows!)
I am a long time handknitter so I'm hoping I can put my pattern writing skills to use on the LK150. I do think the best way to learn is to just try something!
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this machine!

Thank you for doing a beginner level series!! I purchased a vintage Singer about 6 years ago and it is still in the box. I only paid $50 for it and it has a lot of the punched patterns, but I have no idea how to do any of that. I have been hand knitting for over 30 years and recently started with circular knitting machines. It would be nice to attempt to try my Singer out, but after watching a couple of other videos on used machines, I’m sure it will need some new parts and cleaning.

So, I recently began looking into what kind of knitting machines are out there. Same here, though once you have made a gauge swatch you will find that many hand knit patterns will work. Ann Budd's Handy Book of Knitting patterns and Melissa Leapman's 6, 000 Pullover Possibilities give you some basic knitwear patterns based on gauge and Shirley Paden's wonderful Knitwear Design Workshop book is good for if you want to get into designing more complex shapes based on your own measurements - all of these books work for both machine and hand knitting, though they were written mainly with hand knitting in mind.
I recently made the stocking stitch parts of Kate Davies Puffin sweater on my LK 150, which was my first sweater project on it and it worked well . Mary Ann Ogre's The Handbook for Manual Machine Knitters was very helpful to me when I was learning to use my LK150 and I still refer to it often when using my machine. Amazon has most of these books.

Thank you for this video. It’s good to see what the machine is like as no physical stores seem to sell them or even have them on display. I’m not a beginner, I owned a SK280 & ribber but had to sell it a few years ago 😢 I’d love to buy a new one but they are more than double the price of a new LK150, even second hand ones 😮
This looks decent enough to create something wearable and will be cheaper to use as coned 4 ply yarn is pretty expensive. Reminds me of the Bond Classic I had when I was younger. I need to learn the hand manipulation techniques.

Of course I wanted to start out with a beast but then it'll probably end up being a beast to get started aswell. I had looked on amazon and saw thus machine and the word "plastic" turned me off so I started looking for only vintage. Like I said, it would probably be a beast to get started with vintage so I mught actually start with this. Its from Amazon so it can be returned if I dont like it. Thanks for showing us this.

if you find knittax/knitking (AM3 or anything similar) go for that. Silver reed is crap compared to what used to be for sale 50yrs ago. LK150 is plastic but quite good, but the concept how it works and the pulling comb is just bad. Much better to have something with sinkers instead of pulling comb but if it has to be only comb, than at least it should have normal comb, these combs that come with LK150 are pure scam, being only for every second space..

Would you ever consider making a video on how you code your patterns? I am a front end developer with a knitting machine so I don't know python super well, but started trying to code my patterns with javascript, and running into some roadblocks. Thanks!

I know nothing about knitting machines but i have noticed alot pops up on my crochet/knittjng feed. What i see mainly is a round knitting machine. My curiousity is how the heck do you knit a round piece for plus size ladies? Because what i have been seeing is the panel method or knit in the round with cables. I just cant do that manipulation with the two needles unless its bulky yarn. And i like that finer yarn knit. So yes, my curiosity is peaked when this popped up. I will be watching you some more, i think.

I wonder if I could use red heart super saver to practice with or even after I know what I'm doing. I would like to use the red heart yarn to make dog sweaters.I mostly use knit picks yarn, but not for my dogs.
By the way I love that you are making these videos, I'm watching them while I wait for my machine to be shipped.

the ruler is a swatch measure. 60 sts on one side and 40 sts on the other. depending on the swatch sts use the appropiate side.the wider the swatch the fewer the sts per inch. a narrow 60 sts will have lots of sts per inch a wide 60 sts will have fewer st per inch. the other numbers give different gauge stitches.

Love my Brother kx350, almost the same machine by functions (missing plating option and only has 130 needles with opportunity to extend it if purchase one more machine and combine it together) one huge benefit is possibility to pay way less than lk150. Though currently I am into fine guage machine brother kh110.

Hello, Like your piano. ☺☺ Wonder if it would be possible to fix a steel plate to the underside of the machine to stop it buckling? It gets nice and warm in my part of the world. Like your presentation. Mine should be with me in a few weeks from China. Thanks for such a great video. JennyB

I'm here because I'm interested in automating a knitting machine like this. Sort of a 3d printer for knitting. Probably will never finish it, but with arduinos, raspberry pies, and even servos so cheap, the time is now

I just took out the brother kx350 I purchased from our thrift store here and it is pretty much identical to this. I’m cleaning it up and trying to find out how to spruce it up. It appears I need to replace the sponge bar. The machine is super clean but I can’t get it to knit and the sponge bar is what I’m thinking it is. There is also a brother kh 965 near me that was posted and now I’m wondering if I should take the plunge and get that as well. 😅 I’m a hand knitter and when I saw the speed these thinks function at I about fell over 😂. Do you know much about the kh965? I’m thinking I’m going to be looking for a mechanical one real quick lol. Thank you!

I have a brother kh 910, a singer srp 50, and another singer, and 3 Empisals with various bits and pieces. Why so many? Well its because they were on facebook market place for small sums such as $50 for a pile of books, bags of yarn on cones, punch cards etc. I am an artist as well and I was interested in the early models and the analogue computing nature if some of the machines. Intuitively I just started picking them up just to give them a home. Some of these machines had never been opened up. Intimidating gifts?. Others need a good servicing after years of use. I agree a generation or more have turned their back on this craft.
