one of the best pieces of advice I got from a video a few years ago suggested take your favorite top..... and use that as a template.. worked great.. no pattern required...
🤫 Shhhh, I stay home in my sweats and wear all my beautiful shawls around the house. I may be an old woman but I still love to play dress up 😂 Dont tell anyone 😂
I just love your always helpful videos. I live in the absolute boonies and I’m really ancient now and I find I pay no attention to my wardrobe: is it clean? Am I dressed? lol-but, you’re inspiring me to start checking out my colors and making myself some cute scarves, hats, headbands-it gets cold here-also, maybe it’s time to get rid of these yellow crocs! 🤣😎. Thank you, Shannon🥳
You’re welcome Vicki! Clean and comfortable play a big part in what I’m wearing too for sure! Only how out the crocs if you want to! You could always make yourself a matching yellow scarf or shawl!
Nice tips to ponder! Your videos have made me think about adding color, and colors that compliment, instead of black all the time. Also, being more intentional with what I make. For years, I enjoyed making cowls and shawls, but I just don’t wear them right now. So, more time for cardis, sweaters and tops. 🎉
This is a great idea filling the gaps, in that way you both got to crochet AND make something that you need! Last year I needed skirts. This year I need cardigans. And you cant get enough shawls.
Thank you for all the helpful tips and points to ponder! Once I started working in an office where my coworkers regularly dress up, I started wearing more dresses because they’re easy to throw on but they don’t always fit me right or it’s too much of the same color or pattern so I make little crochet tops to throw on over them. I really want to make some leg warmers for myself and my daughter this year. I crocheted one dress for myself and the thought of it rubbing in my seat has prevented me from wearing it more often. I did wear it layered under a jumper, though, and I liked the feeling of wearing a “secret crochet dress” to work. Another accessory I’ve been wanting to make is wrist warmers, especially for October, when the heat isn’t turned on at my work and it can be chilly. Again, thank you for giving me a lot to think about!
I really like the idea of looking at the gaps in MT wardrobe. My closet is stuffed with clothing that doesn't fit or is way out of style, or both.time to have a yard sale or make a drop off at charity shop. Then I'll be able to see where the gaps are and figure out what I need. Thanks for all the great suggestions.
You wanted me to introduce myself, so my name is June, I have a little sewing and making channel on here. I just have to say I really appreciated this video. I've crocheted things over the years too, and I hardly wore most of them, I never thought to just go to my closet and see what was missing or (and this was a really good point) what would balance out my wardrobe. I usually just get really excited when I find a pretty yarn at the craft store. 😍 Thank you for this video, because i really do want to wear more of the things I make. ❤ Though I have to share that I made this red scarf, that I wear every cold season for the last idk 15 years, it's very basic, but I just love it.
Shannon, your videos are always spot on; great ideas! I'm working on a few wearable items. I'm on a cardigan kick right now. In Iowa, you can't have too many cardigans! That's a gorgeous scarf you're wearing! ❤
This has been so helpful, thank you very much 🙏 if you end up making a bag you love and that works well I'd love to hear/see more on it. I have tried to make several bags and I end up really not liking them 😂 my biggest problem has just been figuring out how to make one that is functional but also looks nice. I made a backpack which I love the look of but the whole thing stretches when I put things in it. It is made of cotton but maybe I should have used something else or sown a liner (I don't really feel like making a liner lol) 🤷♀
I like to make and wear shawls wear them to church because its always the air conditioner is so cold. I hear you on the dusters. I have one my daughter gave me and I have abused that thing with my seat so its going to need repairing. I will probably make a fall cardigan if I get inspired.
Thank you for watching! I think the first step is deciding who your “ideal customer” is and what the person would want to wear. (What’s their lifestyle, age, stage of life, etc) and what would make their life easier/solve their problems. And decide what pieces to start with from there. The next step I would do is deciding what color schemes are the most popular with my idea customer’s demographic. I know those are a lot more practical than glamorous first steps but it’s where I’d start!
I’m having a hard time designing my own. I haven’t a clue how I can fit my favorite stitch patterns together to even make a top down sweater. I love your beautiful scarf 🤗🥰
I live in a tropical island, so things like scarfs and shawls are a bit too hot for me. 😅 Still great suggestions though! I have noticed I'm missing a lot of hair accessories though! Headbands, bows, ribbons, bandana, etc
@ShannonTalksYarn Aaah it's so sad though! Because I really love how shawls look, they're so pretty!! I'd try making one for myself either way, maybe in a really thin yarn 😂😂
I've make blankets, shawls, scarves, hats, but never a sweater and that's the next thing I want to tackle. I want it to be a little oversized and baggy, not short, not TOO hot because I live in Florida and don't want to wear it only in the winter but I also tend to always be chilly so I want it to provide SOME warmth. I'm probably a beginner crossing over into intermediate crocheter, so yeah, it's been a process trying to find the right one. Don't even get me started on which yarn once I pick out the pattern. Overthink much? lol
Hi Shannon. Hear me sighing.....I make wearables, for other people! What's wrong with me!! I'm finishing the hood of a poncho a friend requested, as I listen to you. Love those colors you choose for your granny square bag. I will have to choose some items to make for myself. I have bought yarns specifically for my pleasure, just haven't found the right project. Do you ever finish something, only to say to yourself "What next? Now what?" Like you're a lost soul, drifting?
People, pay special attention to the materials that you will use. I crocheted a blouse, it was beautiful, but I used a yarn that was too thick and it makes me look like a Minecraft character. So now that blouse it’s going to be degraded to cushion.
lol, that made me giggle because I 💯know and can picture what you’re talking about! I may have a hexagon cardi like that 😉 I’ve really been drawn to finer weight yarns lately because of how much better they drape!

I love that idea!
I LOVE the scarf 🧣 you’re wearing. Color, stitch, everything
Thank you! I’ve got a link to the video I did about down in the description if you want to make one! It’s super easy!

We won’t tell! Lol!😂
SAME! Lol 😆…I rarely leave my house, but I dress up all the time!
I love that! It’s so awesome 😃
Good for you! I love that!
The scarf youre wearing looks gorgeous on you. Another project to add to my list 😊
Thank you! 😊
I’m making a poncho right now. I don’t have any wearables except scarves so I’m excited to finish it!
I’m excited for you!!! That’s awesome 😃
I love hand dyed scarves with jeans and a jean jacket.
Yeeees!
Great advice - I'll be more motivated to complete something I can visualize using in colors I like and can use with my current wardrobe
That’s exactly how I have to do it!

I agree!
Great video. I’m rough on clothes too, and I never really like the tops I’ve made for myself. So I stick to accessories.
It helps to know yourself doesn’t it? 😃
Sounds like you’ve got a good plan!

Hi Shannon 🤗 did you peak into my closet?! This was perfect! Thank you for giving us sooo much food for thought! 🥰🧶🤩
I love that so much!
I just finished a beautiful shawl in those colors! I used a thin 100% silk ribbon yarn (about 1/8” wide).
I really like the idea of looking for the gaps in the wardrobe with a broader vision - from accessories to outerwear. Great video.
Thank you Kaytie, I hope it helps! 😃

Hi June, welcome! I’m excited to check out your channel!
you have been reading my mind these couples of videos you have uploaded omg omg. XD
I love that!!! And thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it!
Serendipitously, I've been working on a "hole in my wardrobe" black beanie as I'm watching your video!
That’s so awesome!!! I wish we weren’t so far away!!!
Saaaaame!! ❤️❤️❤️

I think that’s a perfect place to wear shawls! Adds a nice dressy element to any outfit!
Your scarf turned out great. Love the colors on you. Which pattern is it? Please share 😊.
Saw your answer already. Thanks.😊
It’s a super easy pattern @leilonni ! You would be able to whip it up in no time! 😃
I’m thinking of starting a crochet fashion line but don’t really know where to start. Love this video

Still great suggestions though!
I have noticed I'm missing a lot of hair accessories though! Headbands, bows, ribbons, bandana, etc
lol I’ve had crocheters in Florida say similar things too! But, yeah, hair accessories would be great in your climate to keep your hair up!
@ShannonTalksYarn Aaah it's so sad though! Because I really love how shawls look, they're so pretty!! I'd try making one for myself either way, maybe in a really thin yarn 😂😂
I love the scarf you are wearing. I am going right now to check out the video.
Awesome, thanks!
Thank you Shannon.
YW Katie!
I need to make some ear warmers. Thanks for the reminder
Im 5'3". I feel ya on sitting hard. Im a grown ass woman and still a "wiggle worm" in my seat. 🤷😂
Right!?!?!? 😂😂😂
Great suggestions.
Thank you so much!
