I have panic attacks which mostly happen at night, so now I don’t want to go to bed even when I’m exhausted. I’m so tired all the time, but I dread the night.

Can’t wait for your advice on this subject, 63 year old me is exactly in this situation, so tired I don’t have the slightest desire to do anything. I just want to sleep all the time, opposite of insomnia, when I sleep I’m in a perfect place, imaginative and adventurous dreams await where all the crushing reality of my life doesn’t exist. In my dreams I am somewhere, alive and thriving whereas reality is forced for me, exhausted to be constantly fighting to function in this world.

Before my husband died, up at 6:45 made him a coffee then off to pick up my daughter from work in bed by 10:30 to 11:00. Now, no husband. Up at 4:40 to take daughter to work. Pick her up at 2:30pm. Tired all day. Worry constantly about bills and money. Try to go to bed at 8:00pm always wake up between 2:00 and 3:00am. Husband died at about 3:15am. Lucky if I can sleep till alarm goes off. Tried reading in bed. Head hits that pillow and worrying starts. Have to drive in dark very hard. Take a nap, up all night. My life has changed greatly. Coping hard, sleeping tough.

Wow, what an interesting topic! I have been struggling with chronic insomnia for a long time. Years of trying different medications for sleep and nothing working.
Im not anxious about it anymore, it is what it is. But i recently learned from my doctor that I likely have sleep apnea. It makes a lot of sense.
If i can get a cpap I know it would increase my quality of life. And now I have these tools I was unaware of before. Even if the machine fixes most of my sleep problems I can refer back to this to keep improving my sleep efficiency.
I've made so many positive choices for my mental health, and I am doing better than ever in that regard but through all of it I'm still so exhausted.
Praying for the day I can feel well rested. I'll be unstoppable if I figure out how to sleep!

Same for me. I'm a bi-phasic sleeper: sleep 3 hours, awake 3 hours, sleep 3 hours. I used to stress about being awake for those 3 hours. Then I figured, why not go with it. So, instead of lying in bed, I'll do a load of laundry, clean the kitchen, read a few pages of a book. When I start getting sleepy again, I go to bed, and I'm usually not tired in the morning now. Turns out my stressing about not being asleep was wearing me out so that I would wake up exhausted.

I’ve struggled with insomnia since I was a teenager. I’m 30 now and for the past month I couldn’t sleep more than 3 hours a night. Finally just decided to get out of bed after waking up everyday and after a week I felt like I was dying 😅 BUT one night recently I went to bed and slept throughout the night. The next week I could sleep throughout the night but during the day still struggled with feeling totally exhausted. It’s been a long two weeks but I believe I’ve finally been able to somewhat retain my brain to sleep properly.

I've just found out that I sleep talk and shout constantly thru the night. It explains my exhaustion, I just never stop. So I'm going to look into it more. My sleep talk is whole conversations, not mumbling, but completely understandable words and sentences. Often it's related to a conflict I'm dreaming about, or a horrific scenario I'm dreaming. So I have a lot of work to do when it comes to sleep.

@@Reba24u over 10 years. Way before the FDA dropped the approved dose for women down to 5 mg. I’ve been fighting with the insurance company every year trying to protect my sleep because I have major depression and I lose my mind when I don’t get sleep. My husband, daughter and all my sisters have been trying to get me to stop taking it since my memory has been crap. Last night was the first night without it and it went great, but I don’t expect them too all that easy. I need help. It will be the second time I’ve gone off of it, but I’m much older now and much more depressed since the first time I stopped taking it. The doctor that put me on it retired 5 years ago and I’ve had to fire the last two psychiatrists. The first one was a moron, the other one threatened to not see me anymore if I didn’t take his advice and do DBT after I waited on a list for 6 months to see him. I was crushed, haven’t found a new doc since and now I’m stuck. Ugh. Dr. Scott has more than helped me these past 3 months. He’s helped me and all the people who love me.

    • @screamingmimi90
      @screamingmimi90 ปีที่แล้ว

@@princessleyla by taking as many things that make me sleepy as I can while still obeying the dose. Like only 50g of Benadryl, or only 10 mg of melatonin, a hemp delta 8 & 9 THC gummy (about 30mg), only my prescription dose of gabapentin (600mg). I do not drink alcohol or take any other recreational drugs. My doctor recommended Benedryl or melatonin, but the rebound from not taking the zolpidem cannot be overcome by one thing. If I don’t take many of the things that make me sleepy, it would be pretty much impossible for me to sleep. I’m fortunate that I don’t have sleep apnea. My method of getting off of zolpidem may be a great risk for someone else. I will stop taking the other meds as soon as I can. After I get over the virus I’m fighting, I will start increasing my activity during the day to try and wear myself out more. Cleaning my house in the new year will serve as my exercise. It will be a complicated process, but I’m ready to be brave and get better by using information from Dr. Scott to motivate me. Hopefully as I do more self help I will be able to stay off of zolpidem. Sorry it’s such a long answer. It’s very complicated.

That’s CBTI! This too has been outdated now. It does work for some but certainly not for those of us that have established changes in our neuro networks. Stress and fear play a huge role in sleep. Sleep is passive and our bodies know how to do it naturally but it’s our minds that get in the way. The more we research and obsess about sleep, the worse our sleep becomes. We need to train ourselves not to worry about not sleeping. We train ourselves out of being able to let go and fall asleep.

A very rare good night is only waking briefly a few times. Almost invariably it's around 4-6 times or more. Anyone with sleep issues, try these protocols.
Quit caffeine if you take it. Try water-decaffeinated organic coffee if you still want to enjoy the flavor.
Take Magnesium Glycinate 400mg daily in 2 doses, morning and night.
Also try Ashwagandha 500mg 2 hours before bed. Make your room cool and as dark as possible.
Use blue blocking computer glasses in the evening. Set your computer / phone to reduce blue light (automatically turns more yellowy) in the evening. Practice slow deep diaphragmatic breathing while you lay in bed.

When I wake up in the night, it's mind chatter almost immediately. I've tried the deep breathing and the muscle tensing and relaxing, too, but again, it doesn't always work. These are good tips for most people, though. 😊

@@probablypoetic8759 I hear you, unresolved trauma, anxiety and ruminating / catastrophic thinking can be a difficult hurdle to surpass and greatly affects sleep. Have you tried high potency (400mg) L-Theanine? Empty tummy morning and night. There are many other options to help you be alert but also calm apart from caffeine. Rhodiola, Creatine.
L-Theanine is known to promote calmness and enhance focus. Liquid Iodine also increases alertness. Green tea has a much lower amount of caffeine 20-40mg, but enough to assist alertness, 1-2 cups before mid-day should have no discernable impact by the time it comes to going to sleep. Once you quit those coffees and become more caffeine sensitive the green tea will pack more punch.

Quit caffeine if you take it.
Hope some of this helps, best wishes for deep, satisfying sleep.

The magnesium and Ashwagandha might help, if you don't have bowel and stomach sensitivity. Be on guard if you do. Magnesium is very laxative. I've tried the supposedly non laxative forms and it gaves me the trots right away. Ashwagandha is hard on my gut, but I stuck it out for months. Just saw no improvement. It's an adaptogen, like Ginseng, but generally not as stimulating. Some people can be very sensitive to it, some have some pretty amazing results.

I deal with insomnia as I learnt to to in multimodel pain therapies. dealing with chronical pain and joint inflamation, I ride the wave when it comes knowing it comes and goes, I spontaneously adapt to it, I do less to nothing one day, when I catch sleep I catch up. Unfortunately, they´re too s....to treat my diseases here as we don´t have chiropractic therapy no schools for that no trained doctors. I also escape my home city as on the country side it´s no loud noise as where I live and the long hikes make my sleepy. I also switch the morning appointments each 2 days, otherwise I wouldn´t manage to get up the following sleepless day at all, then I need to sleep out each 2, 3 day.
I heard about this concept in clinic and I don´t lie on bed during the day. I guess in my case, it´s due to the legal fights, triggers or body pain

I would like to say this works, however, as an insomniac for decades (most of my adult life) who has almost died from sleep deprivation, sleep restriction has not worked for me, nor has practicing sleep hygiene techniques. While I practice these the only thing that helps me sleep is medication and magnesium. Sometimes medication is the only answer. The neuro-chemicals in the brain are delicate and sometimes need help, just like humans do with other illnesses. Don't feel bad seeking professional help with this health issue.

It might be worthwhile to check out the website and go through the questionaire. It's a pretty cheap program, as little as $9 for a week trial, and offers that lowest price on a sliding scale for those that can afford up to $29. I'm a tough case too. Lifetime insomnia problems that just keep shifting to a new issue as I hit menopause. Not life threatening, just makes me dread every night of broken sleep. Now due to hot flashes. Use to have a terrible time falling asleep. Sometimes would shift to waking insomnia. Now it's just every single darn night is broken sleep, w/ no problem falling asleep.
