I think I’ve said this before, almost every musician will say Joni is an inspiration or a favourite listen. This is why. Beautiful.

Joni, despite writing the most famous song about the festival, actually missed being there because she was already booked for a TV appearance elsewhere, the Dick Cavett Show I believe. Such a pity.

We nearly did it. That song reminds me of how close we got, how near we came. And then we watched the world come tumbling down.

She’s actually a superb painter. You should check out some of her stuff.
It’s amazing that she herself always felt like a “artist” & the music just kind of came along with time.

You love Joni Mitchell therefore I suscribed! Who had ever heard of smog back when she wrote this song?? I don't know. Her range was a model for many later female singer songwriters like Jane Siberry, Sarah McLachlan, and many more....

Playing piano that day, Joni realized that she was not going to be able to get to Woodstock and play at that epic concert, too many people and she had already been booked on the Dick Cavett show to play music, so what did she do? She played a song that she wrote the night before called Woodstock and it became the theme song of that epic gathering of 600 thousand and played it live on the TV show for all to see and hear. It became the anthem of that first great concert of the young people of that new generation.

This and A Case of You are my favorite Joni songs. Woodstock was covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and most people only know their version, which was a radio hit, and I can't stand it by comparison to Joni's stunning solo performance.

This is Joni's song, she wrote the lyrics, but if you haven't heard Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young sing this tune, they did a fabulous job.

Joni saw the end of an era, so she wrote the song in the genre of a dirge. A death march or a major change which is exactly what happened.

"I saw the bombers turning into butterflies above our nation".....ain't that something? You must understand that Woodstock was not just a concert, not just a chance to stay together and listen music. Woodstock was the ultimate no! It was not just no to war,it was a big loud no to the society as it was then and as it is still now, based on greed and exploitation. We had a chance to really change the world back then but....lol...it didn't work,it couldn't work. And because of that our society is lost, damned forever. Stay safe. A big Ciao! from Italy.

I Love this woman!! In CANADA she is a national treasure and sits high up on the pinnacle of greatness of any singer/ songwriter / musicians of all time. Folk music prevalent in the 60s or 70s was a major part of the music scene with the likes of Carole King ( tapestry album ) or Cat Stephens or James Taylor or Joan Baez. Crosby Stills Nash and Young were my favourites. RIP to David Crosby who was so talented but unfortunately not a good friend. Her range is sick. It’s like Freddie Mercury . You can’t believe what you just heard. I agree with you Suzie Q. I always like when professional Musicgians and Singers acknowledge their musical influences. It’s often from unexpected people that at first glance seem incongruous to us. Ozzy without hesitation recognizes THE BEATLES as the greatest band of all times. Not Led Zeppelin or Pearl Jam or Metallica. If you look real close you start to understand that all music has context. It has history. It’s derivitive by nature. Whatever our life experiences or musical leanings we develop over the years it has some although sometimes not apparent influence on what they create. Big Yellow Taxi was my favourite of hers. Organically composed and Angelically sung with such joy and feeling in each and every note reminds me of a church choir. Believe it or not I sang in the choir and in my glory days which lasted about a quick minute until my soprano voice turned into a frogs voice when a boys voice turns into a man’s voice. I did however win second place in a provincial wide contest in my grade school choir. Travelling to Ottawa our nations capital. That was my 15 minutes of fame. Music is a magical thing that has the capacity to both elevate us and bring forth emotions that we didn’t even know we had in us. Travis and Suzie is a perfect channel for me. Recognizing the Beauty of music wherever it may come from.

Actually, Joni was supposed to perform at Woodstock but her manager stressed that she had to be on a TV show the day after. The concern was: Can we take her out of this to get her on the TV show on time? She wrote this song during Woodstock, while her friends were playing there. Amazing!

During 1968 we were up to our necks in ‘nam and it represented the opposite of what we wanted at that time. Throw in the MLK and RFK assignations, we had to expresss our protests of all this evil in our songs. Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, …is our we expresses our displeasure. We need to take heed to those times and gather together for understanding, love, and just common repspect for one another.

Our parents had fought in WW11; this was in a way about how our generation was going to fight against our war in Viet Nam. How we saw ourselves. In the passage of time, I understand my parents better, their war after all, was about saving the world from Hitler's Facism. This one that cost our generation countless lives, that we lost in the end, was for nothing. Viet Nam today is a peaceful place, the people go on as they always have; some of my family has traveled through S. E. Asia since.
