How the Terminator 2 music was made

- This is a reworking of a video I originally uploaded in August 2018. It was by far the most popular video on my channel for the very brief period it was online. Unfortunately it got a global block from the film studio for including visual material from the film, which they're obviously entitled to do.
As a lot of work went into this video and my subscribers have quadrupled since it was last online, I was thinking of ways to remake it without any visual material from the film. I came across the idea of buying some T2 action figures and making a bunch of stills of my own. So here we are!

I thought it would be interesting to cover off the Terminator 2 score as its creation is very specific and we can play with the exact sound sources Brad Fiedel did nearly 30 years ago.

They're NECA models. They have changeable parts, yes. 😀

Normally when something is explained in this much detail it wrecks the magic.
But this just makes the atmosphere of the original 2 movies all the more amazing.
It's a huge part of the experience that all the later films have failed to capture.

Yeah, it's so easy to do a terminator movie. Anyone without talent and creativity can make one.....
Those times are sorely missed considering the first two are my favorite movies. I will never have faith in any future Terminator films unless the first two are remastered.
Yeah they could have made the future war prequel movie fans have long dreamed of but instead they tried remaking T2 and called it a sequel and since then it's just been one shitty sequel movie after another.
It ended at T2.

Around 1998 a guitar friend plays me an old song called "Hey man nice shot" and I loved it. And "Title of record" was the soundtrack of my 1999. Very cool of you to drop by!

I met Robert 2 years at a con I thanked him for playing a huge part in my love for film in my childhood and the influences to working to become a film director so if you see him Thank him again for me! :D

I loved Robert as the T1000. Can't see anyone else play the part. Although I am attempting to film my own version of the T1000 for fun, and taking tips from vids like these to put all the pieces together to hopefully get the same feel.

11:44 I'm 36 and since this movie came out i've always loved of course the movie and ost but always had to know where THAT sound in some of the songs came from.
ROFLMAO at revolutionary type of vacuum cleaner. LOLOLOLOL! I am dying. On a serious note though, this was well done. Thank you so much for putting this together. Saw the film with my 5 year old son on opening night, who is a film buff now as an adult... and we absolutely LOVE sci-fi film themes and soundtracks. Very well done and thanks again.

it's getting to 30years and the T2 music never gets old. The the way you can watch an old movie and the music sounds whack but for T2 it's crisp cool. Soo many things came down perfectly that's why the movie is still awsome

I appreciate that this is available again. In my own experience as a shoddy, self-taught composer, the easiest thing to do is add stuff until something starts to sound OK. The hardest thing to do is simplicity, because it gives you nowhere to hide. You cannot bury a mediocre musical idea in lush orchestration. Feidel's real accomplishment, IMHO, is in finding just the right sounds and then letting them speak. That's my takeaway, anyway. Good stuff!
Absolutely. Some of the things I'm most proud of have the least in them. It's a virtuous circle - get the parts right and you don't need to put lots into it. The clean writing and arranging makes it easier to mix and it sounds more together and more powerful.

OMG. Absolutely my words. These sounds are the narrative by themselves. This soundtrack can be used as a base for another sci-fi dark future movie and you really should be and untalented deaf director to fuck it up. T2 is a wonderful example of uniquely talented people working together and building each piece of the puzzle right.

@5.45 oh my god the T1000 is here. I love finding little bits of music in games and films that just fit with the characters or levels and this was T2's thing an awesome forboding sound that was evil and you knew the bad guy was coming. Terminator Dark Fate has something similar too for the rev 9 and it is equally amazing at capturing the new terminators menacing essence.
Could you take a similar look at Éric Serra's scores someday (GoldenEye, Léon the Professional, La Femme Nikita etc.)? He was one of the early adopters of PCM synthesis and his electronica-influenced scores really shine in their uniqueness. I'd love to see a deep dive into how he assembled his sound.

God that was amazing. I love the film, the score and the machines that went into making it. There is so much interesting trivia about the scores for both of those films. For example, the time signature for a lot of the score in The Terminator is somewhat unpredictable and sounds very complex to the point where people have been trying to figure it out for years now. In fact, a lot of it simply came from Brad Fiedel trying to keep his machines in sync. One part of the problem was that the Prophet 10 on-board sequencer was notoriously wonky and would drift in and out of sync, which added to the final expression. That's the thing about the machines of today - they are clean, sound perfect and are almost limitless. A lot of brilliant music and visual art of the past 30-40 years have come from working within the limitations of technology, which in turn helps shape the end result into something beautiful. Brad Fiedel's score is a testament to this.
A good artist knows that limitations are his friend. And you can definitely make great stuff with today's technology - sometimes you just need the discipline to impose your own limitations.
For example: I synthesize nearly everything, even though using drum samples would be easier - but pushing against that limitation gives my music a distinct quality.
Pushing tge technology is /always/ better than having it handed to you on a plate.

@@unfa00Agreed. The thing is, though: Those limitations are artificial. There is no necessity in it. That is what makes it a bit demoralizing to me. I prefer having outer hard constraints rather than arbitrary, self-imposed ones. But that's just me. At the end of the day, though, whatever gets you interesting results is what counts.
@@christopherlawley1842 Yeah, but those guys basically had to invent everything from scratch ;). Less about working with constraints in existing technology and more about "how in the world are we supposed to make this happen?" and then proceeding to invent new technology and methods to get results that few others had gotten at that point. Very interesting still.
@Jon Goat Hah, that's what I'm talking about ;). That's the kind of interesting, unpredictable results that you miss out on when working with modern gear :D.
Great video. This reminded me how good this soundtrack is and I totally agree with the comment about it blurring the lines between original musical score and sound effects. This made me dig out my CD of the soundtrack, which I've had for over 30 years. I will probably listen to it in the car as I think the only other thing I have nowadays that will play it is my 4K Blu-ray player.
Early 90’s technology is so insanely intricate, when companies all made bespoke in-house solutions to problems. It’s amazing how the hardware engineering is arranged almost as an instrument, down to the rows of programmable memory cards.

I remember going into the theater to see Terminator 1 and not knowing what it was about. It was pleasantly terrifying!

Thank you, thank you thank you! Was an 90's child and was 11 when I saw T2. This score is one of my biggest influences in music. The arrangement, the merger of analog and digital, T2 had it's own personality that offered deep reflection in our own capabilities of creation and destruction. As an audio engineer, my hats off to the this breakdown video and the respect deserved for the artistry.

Wicked video! Always loved the Tunnel Chase score, my fav from T1 I think. Really cool to see those haunting string lines were an electric violin, always assumed it was another synth!
That kind of depth, craftmanship, imagination, dedication (including the actors of course) is what makes T2 such a great movie. Most people don't have the full scope of what went into making this movie. For me it's incomprehensible that once you have worked at this level, you make further sequels that are not even worthy of comparison.

I have a tidbit of interesting info from the Fidel Terminator films, he was put down on the music union contract as the only one player (well possibly with the electric violin player) so he collected the majority of the secondary market "special payments" which normally would be split up the orchestra of 90-100 musicians-- we are talking a lot of money. On huge budget films like these that make a ton of money at the box office and in the secondary market, these films made him very rich (on top of fact he was also paid the fee to score the films and received millions in performance royalties worldwide). I understand he retired early..... comfortably.

Maybe that's one of the reasons he didn't need to put up with the stress and politics of it. Read that he felt he needed out after 20 years or so. Think he said he was doing some sailing or work on boats or something!
The song I remember most from this movie was, Guns N Roses, You Could Be Mine.
This was so cool to watch. I being a new composer and trying to break into the industry, this helps to inspire me and demonstrate how to manipulate sounds into the unique ones like these heard in such scores as Terminator and Terminstor 2.

Truly awesome documentary. T2's unique score was as essential to its success as Cameron's direction and all the pioneering effects work. Fiedel's improvisational approach to music and sound was such an important and under-acknowledged asset to the franchise. I'm glad he enjoys doing his own musicals but it's such a loss that he left film scoring.

Very cool... always wonder why Brad Fiedel doesn't make much music anymore (in terms of soundtracks, anyway). I listen to this soundtrack often.
I've heard him say he'd had enough and wanted out. He scored pretty solidly for about twenty years and then walked away.
It's a shame, he was one of the top soundtrack-artists of all time. I loooove Terminator 1&2 and fright night to hell and back.

@@YouMustYouLust So true. For me the brilliance of the film is 50% music and 50% the actual film, with a different soundtrack I honestly don't think T2 would have been so special, the music really makes it what it is, and also true in many other examples.

Wow! This was a ton of work you did, here. I'm so glad I found this because I've always loved that "clank" (Anvil II) in the score and am glad to see you explain it. I too, when first watching and hearing this movie was so impressed with how the music used samples of metal in what I saw as a reference to the then popular music movement "industrial". I feel like this came at a time when audiences were ready for such a thing. It's interesting to see in contrast the bits of the first Terminator score you included and how synthy they were, which I'd forgotten and they now seem very dated and 80s but still very cool. Thanks for putting this together. I can't believe it only has 537 views and only 99 likes! Liked and sub'd!
Yes, T2 hit a junction of many things and became immortal. You're absolutely right.
The Terminator score has some amazingly dark moments in it and I love that score, but there some bits that are very of the era, as you were saying. Particularly that bit where Sarah Conner is riding a bike to work before it all kicks off. The music there always makes me laugh!

I played a fairlight several times back in the 80's at a studio in Conduit place, London. We were regular lads and we would save our money and buy a few hrs studio time every other month. And it was just to mess around and play the fairlight. Really amazing times. We were living the dream of many but it was pricey....but worth every penny. Goosebumps every visit.

T2 soundtrack is one that will forever be ingrained in my memory as being the top 5 film scores that are so woven into the fabric of the film that it makes the actual movie what it is. Discovered your channel a few days ago cause I was researching an old synthesizer. What a found it has been, excellent content and thanks for keeping it up 👍🏼
On the video, this is one of my favourite scores of all time that has a character that gives T2 a huge part of its acclaim in my opinion. After watching this video, I appreciate even more how forward-thinking Brad Fiedel was with this composing T2. Using the latest technology to create things not many tried before and sounds we had not heard prior. I was only 7 when this movie was released (my parents didn't care if I watched these things) but I can truly say the music had as big an impact on me as the pictures. Shame Fiedel didn't continue composing long after this movie.

David worked on all the FCA "Do it now" ads and I was the music supervisor / composer. They managed to get a slot to meet Arnie whilst he was in the UK and David came over. So they met in person and conversed as two Arnies. 😂

Amazing technology how natural orchestral sounds can be modified through a computer program interface to create a unique set sounds for movie scores.

The soundtracks of the first two terminator movies have always fascinated me since I was a little kid. Its great to see how these atmospheric tech noir sounds were created! Brad Fidel is one of the greatest, if not the most accomplished movie score composers i have ever heard. when I listen to these sounds it is almost like being in this dark apocalyptical world of deadly merciless machines myself.

It was never included on the soundtrack release as it's just a very short cue. Python Blue has done a remake that's pretty perfect if you check his channel.
