I spent most of my life in Zimbabwe and all my horses were ex-racehorses. Thoroughbreds are fantastic horses, intelligent and giving. Once they came off that high energy food and were allowed to chill out in paddocks, they became calm and easy to handle and train. They have incredible stamina and make wonderful eventers and dressage horses. I had great love and respect for my thoroughbreds.
I can see Candy has her heart into her horse. He is lucky to have an owner like her. Thoroughbreds are so disposable in the racing industry. They deserve love and a good home like Candy has given her horse. ❤
I can't believe ,as someone who has never been interested in horses before, how fascinated I've become with these horsemanship videos. It's a pleasure to watch someone so in tune with a horses psyche that they can take an animal scared of the world and give them some peace and calm. Bravo.

Having had a couple of OTTB's over the years my heart breaks for these poor horses. As you said they have no real foundation training. They jump on them while they're still babies and flog them around race tracks. Most of them end up with horrible leg and back injuries by the age of 4 because they're worked sooo hard before their bones and skeleton gets a chance to mature. Personally I'd LOVE to see racing banned. It's a horrible man made industry for horses and dogs. I also adopt greyhounds who suffer similar physical and emotional traumas. These industries sicken me and I almost didn't watch this video when you said that you were at a jumps racing stud.. I only continued to watch because it's you Steve and I knew you'd help this beautiful boy and his lovely owner Candy.. 😊
Candy's horse is very fortunate to have someone who's not giving up on him. Lots of troubled horses that injure their owners are just put down after being labelled dangerous. The life of a racehorse is so unnatural it's a marvel that they can go on to be magnificent riding horses. And they really are!

Steve here in South Africa, I think you can pick up ex race horses fairly easily, they virtually give them away.Ive ridden a race horse on the beach and he went like a dream.Polo ponies however have a tendency to side step🥰 I wonder why??🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for your training lessons that transfer to my human life. I gain a new perspective how to change unhealthy feelings to something positive. If I breakdown fixing my issue using your gentle, forgiving methods on myself, I’m not overwhelmed. When using a new techniques ( given to me by a professional) during a challenging human situation your “horse” advice really works. When I face my fears, it takes time, practice, and also time to rest in between to let the new positive feeling sink in and get rid of my old ways. It’s is the small steps and time that lead to good outcomes that can make life better. Than you Steve and all who support you! 🙏🤩😎

I worked at Newmarket for years back in the late 1950s when there were only about 20 girls in the different yards. I want to ask when was he gelded? And also does she wear perfume or deodorant around her horse. I recall one girl was very badly hurt by a colt and it was thought that was the reason. Also the time of the month can affect his behavior, tb horses are more sensitive than most to odors and also confidence. I rescued tb the rest of my life for the love and enjoyment of having them and riding them. Good luck Candy, I’m 82 now and miss not having the freedom a horse gives you, my last boy was 17.3 steeplechaser, chestnut and so handsome.
What a lucky horse to have Candy as an owner. So many race horses face a terrible fate at such a young age. Also, Candy has an absolutely beautiful smile. I was thinking about how Steve tells us that Buck Brannaman teaches his students to smile when we’re looking at our horses’s feet. Candy’s smile will tame those feet in no time. I was taught the one rein stop years ago .and a group of lads in a car thought it would be funny to aim at me,revving up and loud radio 🤬. The horse reared and went to bolt but luckily stopped , training is sooo important ❤
Ugh gotta love that. I had a tractor that on purpose speeded up next to me and my horse on a small road. My horse walked back into a ditch and fell on his bum. Luckily I stayed on after he took a sprint and after he slowed down a little bit i used the one rein stop before he ran into another ditch. I can't understand why people can be so reckless around flight animals, it's annoying. I'm happy it also tuned out well for you, it could have gone wrong so fast.

Good work Candie! I also had an OTTB, although he had been off track for quite a long time😂. Still, it’s the foundational work that’s missing, right? Spot was 18.2 hands and he would run through me, push me all over the place, and yet they are so sensitive! It’s kinda crazy. Wish I’d known about Steve back then!! My arms were often black and blue and cut and scraped. But I loved him dearly. In the end it’s all worth it, just keep following Steve’s advice and that horse will love you just as much as you love him❤

I have a OTTB as well and she did just the same in the beginning. I got her with 2,5 and she is now 6. We don't ride but do a lot of groundwork. It pays off. Big time. Candy you have a wonderful horse!!! You do great

So glad he was too slow and is going to learn a different way of being. Candy is so brave to put herself on a public platform to assist other owners with race horses. So many of them end up in double decker buses to Mexico for slaughter. Love the reminder not to hand feed and the importance of ground work. I'm a non-rider that has learned so much about horses by subscribing to your channel.
Allowing 20 minutes peace for horse to absorb and think is crucial and often understated.. (...note for Steve). "Clever Cowgirl" recently also realised this.. but after a long time of trying... if you watch her videos.. I enjoy watching you and Candy with her boy, I had a off track TB, he was a great horse, he had some issues after watching some of your videos Steve I had been able too help him through some issues, we ride western, he made an excellent trail horse and working ranch horse, unfortunately we lost him last year, racing horses are the best ,, his grandfather was ALYARD who ran the 1978 triple crown second place in all 3 race’s.. My best horse was a racehorse. He was never spokked by horses running by him. He was kind, calm, brave, trustworthy, smart,sensible and wonderful to ride.
Thoroughbreds lives are stress when in training. Many are confined, led by the beard, cross tied, anti rearing bits, tongue tied, whipped when trying their heart's out, twitched, fed high grain, have the start of or ulcers, injuries etc. And really need time to let down and be treated with fairness, empathy and consistency. Love your training, kindness and empathy with horses. You are doing so much for horses around the world.

aged 13, i was mucking out at a race horse stable as a Saturday girl as payment for riding lessons. Whilst in a stall i was attacked by one of the horses. It picked me up by the hood of my Parka and shook me around like a rag doll before slamming me hard up against the wall and ripping the hood off. I was rescued by a couple of jockeys. did it put me off horses? No. I was more concerned about how i was going to tell my mum why the hood of my new parka came to be ripped off. had i told her the truth, im sure she'd have stopped me working there. mind you, having lessons on trained temperamental racing horses to begin with is a bit insane to begin with i suppose. this was 49years ago. i expect it wouldn't get past health and safety these days.
Race horses are treated very differently than any other horse. You should always keep on the opposite side of the stall from them. They are used to you walking backward when you enter a stall leading them. They are trained that way so they dont bump their hips or shoulder on the stall as they enter...there are so many things that they are trained differently in.
As someone who doesn't know anything about horses and has watched a dozen of your videos, I think this is the best video you have made that explains your techniques and why you do them the way you do and the relationship between a horse and it's rider.
You are such a great horse trainer and teacher. I enjoy watching all you do and If I were Candy, I would also take on what you achieved with her horse, i.e. without all the heavy petting. I like her affection for her horse, a wonderful quality in any human, but you achieved what you did without it as it makes a lot of sense. I hope Candy takes this part of your teaching and lessens touching him as heavily as she did, as she can still love him without the over-stimulated rubbing, which is entirely her need, and not her horse. You are a wonderful trainer!

Whether with horses or dogs (or really any animal)...the human female must unlearn her reflexes to show love by being close and nurturing. It's the way humans do it, but animals don't. Little animals are taught this lesson before puberty hits. Nature is wise. But in all honesty, we humans also only get close in relationships of trust and respect. Way to go Candy!
Of all the horse and rider combinations you have worked with Candy and this horse are in the top 5 that you watch and know they will be successful. He is a stunning horse and she has the tools and attitude to work through anything with him. The short foundation you provided has opened a whole new relationship between Candy and the horse. One of my favorite pairs you have worked with.
Candy has a really sweet and special skill with this horse. I think this is the beginning of a great relationship between the two of them. You could see the horse become more balanced and competent as Steve worked with him and I have no doubt he will do the same for her. What dedication she has!
Really enjoyed this and relevant with my new horse who is an ex racer (NH) who i sat on for the first time yesterday after four weeks of owning, four weeks of daily groundwork. Owner was a breath of fresh air. I struggle watching some of the owners but Candice was amazing.
I love that Candy paid attention to what you were saying, didn't talk over you, and just drank it all in. I loved that big smile on her face when she was loading the horse. She will do well with him. I'm hoping well get an update in the near future.
Of course! There is always positive feedback… as always to the owners and horses and the Steve team! I recommend for such bruises, one or two doses of Arnica 30 or 200c me,ted under the tongue as needed… helps reduce bruising, bleeding, swelling, and shock. Thirty years of experience with both people and animals.
I've had five straight-off-the-track Thoroughbreds and absolutely loved them all. Of course, some were more difficult than others but the differences in temperament was huge. One was a "jibber' and long after he had his teeth fixed, he still did it. One boy would only ever run fourth, regardless of the speed. He could be on the track with the fastest or slowest horses in the world but no, only fourth but that was very good for me because his temperament was absolutely amazing. Candy will have a long relationship with this boy, it can only get better and better. Loved this video!

So glad he was too slow and is going to learn a different way of being. Candy is so brave to put herself on a public platform to assist other owners with race horses. So many of them end up in double decker buses to Mexico for slaughter. Love the reminder not to hand feed and the importance of ground work. I'm a non-rider that has learned so much about horses by subscribing to your channel.
Allowing 20 minutes peace for horse to absorb and think is crucial and often understated.. (...note for Steve). "Clever Cowgirl" recently also realised this.. but after a long time of trying... if you watch her videos.. It is all so interesting that you offer good advice that often is not known by other lovely horse experts Steve!!! 😊

I enjoy watching you and Candy with her boy, I had a off track TB, he was a great horse, he had some issues after watching some of your videos Steve I had been able too help him through some issues, we ride western, he made an excellent trail horse and working ranch horse, unfortunately we lost him last year, racing horses are the best ,, his grandfather was ALYARD who ran the 1978 triple crown second place in all 3 race’s..

My best horse was a racehorse. He was never spokked by horses running by him. He was kind, calm, brave, trustworthy, smart,sensible and wonderful to ride.
Thoroughbreds lives are stress when in training. Many are confined, led by the beard, cross tied, anti rearing bits, tongue tied, whipped when trying their heart's out, twitched, fed high grain, have the start of or ulcers, injuries etc. And really need time to let down and be treated with fairness, empathy and consistency. Love your training, kindness and empathy with horses. You are doing so much for horses around the world.

aged 13, i was mucking out at a race horse stable as a Saturday girl as payment for riding lessons. Whilst in a stall i was attacked by one of the horses. It picked me up by the hood of my Parka and shook me around like a rag doll before slamming me hard up against the wall and ripping the hood off. I was rescued by a couple of jockeys. did it put me off horses? No. I was more concerned about how i was going to tell my mum why the hood of my new parka came to be ripped off. had i told her the truth, im sure she'd have stopped me working there. mind you, having lessons on trained temperamental racing horses to begin with is a bit insane to begin with i suppose. this was 49years ago. i expect it wouldn't get past health and safety these days.
Race horses are treated very differently than any other horse. You should always keep on the opposite side of the stall from them. They are used to you walking backward when you enter a stall leading them. They are trained that way so they dont bump their hips or shoulder on the stall as they enter...there are so many things that they are trained differently in.

As someone who doesn't know anything about horses and has watched a dozen of your videos, I think this is the best video you have made that explains your techniques and why you do them the way you do and the relationship between a horse and it's rider.
You are such a great horse trainer and teacher. I enjoy watching all you do and If I were Candy, I would also take on what you achieved with her horse, i.e. without all the heavy petting. I like her affection for her horse, a wonderful quality in any human, but you achieved what you did without it as it makes a lot of sense. I hope Candy takes this part of your teaching and lessens touching him as heavily as she did, as she can still love him without the over-stimulated rubbing, which is entirely her need, and not her horse. You are a wonderful trainer!

Whether with horses or dogs (or really any animal)...the human female must unlearn her reflexes to show love by being close and nurturing. It's the way humans do it, but animals don't. Little animals are taught this lesson before puberty hits. Nature is wise. But in all honesty, we humans also only get close in relationships of trust and respect. Way to go Candy!

Of all the horse and rider combinations you have worked with Candy and this horse are in the top 5 that you watch and know they will be successful. He is a stunning horse and she has the tools and attitude to work through anything with him. The short foundation you provided has opened a whole new relationship between Candy and the horse. One of my favorite pairs you have worked with.
Candy has a really sweet and special skill with this horse. I think this is the beginning of a great relationship between the two of them. You could see the horse become more balanced and competent as Steve worked with him and I have no doubt he will do the same for her. What dedication she has!
Really enjoyed this and relevant with my new horse who is an ex racer (NH) who i sat on for the first time yesterday after four weeks of owning, four weeks of daily groundwork. Owner was a breath of fresh air. I struggle watching some of the owners but Candice was amazing.

I recommend for such bruises, one or two doses of Arnica 30 or 200c me,ted under the tongue as needed… helps reduce bruising, bleeding, swelling, and shock. Thirty years of experience with both people and animals.

I've had five straight-off-the-track Thoroughbreds and absolutely loved them all. Of course, some were more difficult than others but the differences in temperament was huge. One was a "jibber' and long after he had his teeth fixed, he still did it. One boy would only ever run fourth, regardless of the speed. He could be on the track with the fastest or slowest horses in the world but no, only fourth but that was very good for me because his temperament was absolutely amazing. Candy will have a long relationship with this boy, it can only get better and better. Loved this video!
