Saw them in December 1976 at the Montreal Forum. It was the loudest concert I ever heard. They were raw, stoned out of their minds and Joe Perry never once looked up at the crowd. To this day it was my favorite concert from them and I've seen them 8 times. Their new shows are more polished and they are really cohesive but those old concerts were standouts.
As messed up as they were, some of those 1978 shows were the best they ever sounded. The stereo guitars of Joe and Brad were epic and they had Mark Radice on keys doing all those harmony parts on the records that Joe could never pull off.
They had great shows and they had terrible shows. Fatigue, boredom, drugs, and infighting all contributed to their hit and miss track record. I never saw a show where Joey or Tom played poorly. Always tight. But Steven and Joe were often not at their best. Even sober musicians have off nights. There was never any doubt in my mind they had the talent to make a comeback. One of the greatest rock bands on the planet. IMO
@@toddlavigne6441 I would add Brad Whitford to the list who never seemed to play poorly. He covered Joe's ass for a good part of the late 70's. But if you listen to the Boston 1978 Music Hall show, all 5 of them were totally on, I think it's the best the ever sounded. And it's quite possible the next night they sounded awful.
@@rrdream2400 It was always Steven and/or Joe that were messed up in the 70's. The other 3 were always tight. Joey for the record, admits he always played straight, except for one night he forgot about having a show and was high.
Leber and Krebs broke this band up by strong-arming Joe Perry into doing a solo album. He held back some of his best stuff- Let The Music Do The Talking would have made Night in the Ruts an alltime great album. It was THE next great Aerosmith hit and would have saved the band.
I saw Aerosmith/Foreigner/AC/DC/Mohagany Rush live at Summer Jam 2, Chicago, 1979 (I think). I can't really remember much, it was so long ago but I just remember being super excited, stoned and was shouting and having a great time. It was all Zeppelin and Aerosmith for me at that age, 16 or 17.
I was at the show when they broke up. It was here in Cleveland at the World Series of Rock concert. Here was the lineup. Scorpions came on at 10a, ACDC with Bon Scott came on next. That show is on TH-cam, Journey was next, thin lizzy , ted nugent , Aerosmith was the headliner. I heard it happened in their trailer before the show. A fight over the girlfriends. Someone threw a bottle of milk at someone, ect. But, the show was excellent ! I remember Seasons of Wither being the high point.
Was at their last tour, pre-break up, at Wonderland in Toronto. I remember at the time I could swear they were fighting on stage, later learned they actually were.
Yes because this documentary said it was evident that they were fighting and many fans figured it out. Wow!!! The shit drugs can cause and one bad wife. Ha!!
I was sad that they broke up, my older brother introduced me to their music, and I really loved it. They had a sound unlike any other band. And then they got back together, and woah!! Suddenly they were putting out awesome new albums/songs... I to this day, I think their break up led to a better thing in the end.
Drank Heineken with Perry and Tyler in Joe's hotel room 1984. Joe was kinda quiet but Steven continually bitched about a deceased mutual friend. Had a great conversation with Brad Whitford and his wife about movies, though. This was after a Michigan performance.

So with the "Aerosmith breakup" that would make 6 long years (1979 to 1985) between albums by the classic lineup, not counting the amazing metal album Rock In A Hard Place (1982) recorded with temporary guitarists. Now we have the classic lineup back, and the band is noteworthy for sticking together for all these long years. But what does it mean to "be together again" ? They haven't recorded a studio album since 2012, over ten years now!!! They might be together, but they aren't working musicians, just celebrity stage show performers from time to time
Here's what happened: They started the band when they were in their teens then they had three albums pretty much written for them and all they had to do was play the music and do drugs. The three albums were all done between the years of 74 and 76. That makes them very early 20's. Save for Tyler; he was 25 when the band was started. My point is that the guys didn't grow up. They just played music and jerked themselves off with drugs which hindered their maturation process. So by 1979 they were a bunch of angry and maladjusted 19 year olds in their late 20's and early 30's.
Could never understand how they didn't make it outside of north America during the 70s.those records they had back then we're as good as anything else doing the rounds at the time. But their records didn't chart in Europe maybe it was down to marketing ,who knows.
LESLIE ROCK, my understanding is that American bands were perceived as too "bubble gum" in Europe during the late-70's. When Kansas, Journey, Styx and REO Speedwagon were selling out stadiums in the U.S. in the late 70's, these same bands were virtually unknown in Europe. The American musicians that were big in Europe prior to this time were Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead. Even though Aerosmith sprang from a different tradition, namely blues rock, Europeans would have stereotyped them as teeny boppers.
Yes everyone needs vacations but wow , that wife of Joe's. She kept up lots of hell all the time also. I've seen women like this and I'd rather smell a pile of it ,, shew ,, then to see a b like that even come walking up around me. It's sickening as I've seen so many gals all about themselves. That's ours to love and enjoy. We buy the damn records don't we. Make u rich. The wives role is , it's your men and u can get them at home. They are ours in music. Like it or not. It was as much ours as anyone's. Now the women broke it up and added extra stress to it. None of the ladies if I can call them that needed to hang around. Also how did u get any groupies with them there? Ha ha , yes a soap opera. Oh yes , Joe a one woman man. Yea right Joe. Yes she was toxic so she was your drug then u needed no other. Hog wash. Were they smarter than you boys. Were they taking your game away right under your nose? Too f.cked up to see? They wanted the attention. Fighting slapping and splashing milk at each other. Then you guys literally left to cry over spilled milk and while dope sick. This pisses me off because the guys should never had to go through this. I grew up listening to Aerosmith and loving them. It's a special rock sound Bec of Stevens voice and Joe's great G. Allowing the drama queens to mess it up. I'd slap em all if I seen them and show u some Moxy Steven. I'd show u what it really is. Wow I could write the documentary on the screwed up wife of Joe. All into herself she wanted even all their attention even Joe's if he had woke up about her. Steven smartest Bec he seemed to know that she didn't need to be there. I agreed with Joe on a couple points but the wives at least Joe's were there to get and be famous even at her husband's fame ending which was had right Bec he was of the band. Is that real loving your husband or using him for your affairs. All about herself. Whooo...I don't see all that. Thing is also that the stress could have been some of the reason for the getting spaced. Like broken families can cause the starting of not being happy and wanting to escape it with drugs to be screwed out your mind to forget yo problem s. She shouldn't have been there. She was the worse part of it. She worse than the drugs. Wish Joe had seen that. UPDATE THO......Were over her now and not to see her there and Aerosmith is still rocking and got themselves clean.
