Its interesting. I watched Harrys Garage when he talked about his X5 back in the days and lane assist thinking his country roads were real roads and kept pulling him into the ditch all the time and that was the reason he got rid of the car. Its weird that it has gone this far and its nice of Joe to say its not BMWs fault, its weird regulations.
I went together with a buddy of mine to pick up his brand new M2. The baby blue one. Carbon buckets, carbon roof and pretty much all bells and whistles. What a nice car really. 👌
An absolutely fantastic sports car as a daily, and backroads. Its suspension and handling is incredible, plenty of power, and when mixed with a 6 speed manual, you can’t ask for a better setup. Excellent review.
@@jeremyroper7273 I never heard they were tall. Also, the gears in the rear end are 3:73 I Believe. The Porsche is much different, it doesn't have the power to compensate
Sure you can. It's a digital car that one feels dead inside after driving it. The manual is horrible, bmw never had good manuals. The steering is dead and lacks any feel/communication.
Thanks Joe..you guided me to the "right" purchase of our previous '19 230i xDrive and more recently, our x3 M40i. Drove both a current M2 AT at BMW PDC in Greenville, SC and a z4 s30i locally. Those two are my considerations. Saw a new Alpine White/Cognac z4 M40i Handschalter today....wish I could have driven that one!
Hi Joe. I have exactly that spec in Australia we don’t have the bongs, gongs etc as we are exempt from stupidity at the moment but I love the carbon seat it’s such a nice feeling when driving the car. I have the manual and I just love the extra involvement it brings. I have added a lot of extra details like splitter, eibach springs etc and I get asked everywhere I go about the car. There is a massive M following down under as you know from your last trip and from my experience the M2 is always just so much fun. Let’s face the facts it is being fazed out of life but people out there if you want a great drivers car and not at bonkers hyper car prices, get an M2 you will not regret it.
Fellow Aussie here, how is it for inner city driving with our bumpy pothole roads? I'm only 10km from Melb CBD so unsure if this will still be a good daily.
Joe thank You for the great content. After a longer while my order for G87 ZBlue was placed. I looked forward to this moment for a very long time. Watching Your channel helped my to build my own spec. I am sure it will be a lots of fun! Cheers Mate!
Its wonderful. Have my 24 Black 8-speed auto with regular seats (M accents) with the sunroof and saving almost 10k that way. Its a wonderful daily. I have 2 stoplights on my way to work and fun hillside backroads. The M2 just eats up the corners and is a rocketship on demand. But beyond "livable" at 6am on a Monday. Its not cheap but compared to others with similar performance, M3/4 comp. Alfa's or Cayman GTS. It's almost a bargain. Almost went for the CT4 blackwing though and honestly its a good contender in that $60k US world too
I love mine. It's perfect for the drive to work, comfy and really nice inside. And when I fancy driving fast, it's in its element. If fuel cost isn't a worry, It's the best new daily imo. Can't think of a better car out of the box for 60k.
Saw yours in the metal at the MotoGP last year. I was then subsequently invited to test drive a G87. I have extensively driven a F87 and the G87 was such an improvement. The F87 was sublime but the G87 just turned tweaked it and improved in every day...maybe not on the gearbox as I was comparing DCT on the F87 to the Torque Convert on the G87. The lasting thoughts were how nimble and light it felt. The front end was incredible.
Very interesting and conprehensive take. One thing regarding TC, Rubens Barrichello (former F1 driver) took it to the track and called out TC at 4 to be the optimal setting for lap time.
I had a test drive in the G87 a while back, The interior is on another level from the F87 but on the road it felt HUGE to me compared to my F87 and I also thought the dash was a bit fussy ( I guess you would get used to it )
Another great review Joe 👏🏻. 220 mile range would be too low for me. I get 500 miles out of my 330i N53 on a long trip. Went to the Nürburgring recently and didn’t have to fill up the entire way there. A big bonus when it’s bad weather & dark etc.

Great video as always Joe. I think one of these would be a pretty perfect second car if you’ve got an SUV / Estate etc. to cover the practical things, but as a one car proposition, it’s the ‘new’ M3 / M4 that appeals more to me
Very informative review Joe - excellent and well done. As a G87 owner I would add the following: 1. Clicking “sport” on M-mode button also turns off a number of the bongs - I tend to press and hold “set” 2. I have the ZF auto and really love the very short gear ratios which you can flick through - love manuals as well but for me the shorter ratios and fast shifts actually make the car more enjoyable on UK roads. 3. I have the BMW starred Pirelli pzero corsa tyres and whilst they may be slightly stiffer I think they do manage to add more feeling back into the EPAS steering. Michelins are known to be great at objective markers but tend to suffer on subjective feel 4. I will be adding m-perf lowering springs soon so will be interesting to see if that makes much difference Cheers
Loved the end of term review - thorough as always ! Totally agree with the manual gearing issue in 6th and can’t imagine the annoying bongs as we don’t get them in our Oz spec cars. Those frozen colours look tasty. Appreciate the shout out and clip - epic memories. ❤👊🏻
Great review Joe. It's amazing how much more love this new M2 is getting now that people have spent time with it. After "the internet" just decided, en masse, that this car was a joke when it was first announced, turns out it's pretty darn good! Dunno if you saw Chris Harris' recent review on Collecting Cars, but that was basically what he was saying too (and he was one of the haters initially). Great video Joe, really enjoyed this. I must say the new M2 has grown on me as I’ve seen a few on the road over the past few months. However, I do prefer the latest M240i in terms of overall athletics.
Nice video, loved my previous generation M2 Comp. Also nice to see you comment on lane assist, on my current M4 it tried to kill me numerous times in roadworks or the dark, where it get horribly confused. Most of the emergency assistance turns off in heavy weather (when you really need it) BMW are pretty good at this stuff, its just saying to me driverless car tech is genuinely a long way away from being properly usable and safe.
Super informative and onest review! Happy to see the pixel 8 pro in there, I would be happy to hear your opinion about it, I am a long time nexus and pixel user.
Bought a new 2 series two weeks ago and the bongs can be switched off permanently.. turn lane assist down to minimum and you hardly notice it,without switching it off every time you start. Great car..😎
Hi Joe👍, great summation of your time with the M2. What a faff to start every journey switching off things but as you say legislation dictates car suppliers now. Fair round up at the end buddy 👍. Hope to see the M3 touring very soon 💞😎
Thank you for the video!!! Again well done! Thank you for the very detailed explanation of the speed limit warning stuff on the M2. Sadly will feel like an airplane pilot in the future to start up a car. One word to the manual gearbox you were talking about: I've been searching for a manual M2/M3 to test drive for months now. Eight official dealerships and one BMW group-owned dealership in my area don't have own cars or pool cars with a manual gearbox (no M2, no M3). Even after sending three emails to BMW, I haven't had any success. The experience here is even worse, with auto-generated replies that tell me I should go to a local dealership and that they do not print any info material anymore (which i haven’t even asked for). Currently, the car buying experience in Germany is not something I can recommend to someone else. At the moment, I have the impression that BMW doesn't want to sell cars with a manual gearbox (despite promoting it on TH-cam and even through their engineers). Maybe I'm just not the right type of customer, and BMW expects customers to spend 80,000€ or more without being able to test that type of gearbox. I don't know, but right now, I'm more than disappointed. Anyway, I just had to vent my frustration about this situation. Still, thank you very much for your videos and the podcast. Keep it up.
Before I bought my M2 Comp there was the same problem - Joe extremely kindly let me try his car. This time, my dealer (UK) had a manual demo - and I went ahead and ordered a manual.
@@markburton5170Definitely a top-notch opportunity for sure! I've been thinking about checking out a used one for a test drive, but it's not easy. The closest M3 available for a spin is 350km away. I could squeeze it into a single day - a 4-hour drive there, an hour test drive, and another 4 hours back. But honestly, I'm not sure if that would make for a great day. Plus, I don't really want to waste a dealer's time, money, and put extra miles on a car that I know I won't end up buying. It just doesn't feel right.
400 miles into mine, my M1 settings are similar to yours - except I have autoblip off. Start up is control wheel forwards (to shortcuts), Drive settings, Speed limit warning off, Lane assist off and confirm), then M1. One fewer action than your way. I am undecided about 'M sound'. I am also quite interested in M Mode Sport - which puts the rev counter onto the head-up display as well as turning off speed limit warnings. For me the downside is that if you use cruise (which I often do) it sets it back to road. By the way, you can apply a few mph tolerance to the speed limit warnings but I still want them fully off. Joe do get in touch.
Thanks for a great review summary, Joe. Pretty accurate summation of the pluses and minuses, I think. Not a perfect car, but a damn good one. BTW, I think it's hysterical you and Harry Metcalfe have the same "special" corner for filming videos. 😊
I had a 2020 M2. It was my first BMW after owning 4 Audis in a row. I had several small issues with it though. A rear seal gasket went, there was a belt noise I never did get rid of despite taking it in 3 times and a couple other little things. I traded it in on the new RS3. Guess I'm just an Audi guy.
Had an all day test drive from Rybrook now Sytner Shrewsbury, great fun car to drive really engaging, never had one bong gong or anything tbh, I guess the dealerships don’t like them either 👍
Joe great review - agree with your comments my G87 is more Fun than when I had G82. I ❤ my T.R so which colour would you choose against the very limited choice. Miss 360’ cameras thought
i drive g31, you are right, i have had cases as well, when car decided to brake and steer where it should not, not very safe imo. for me thankfully its one button hold and all that is off, but nowdays that button is gone
The m240 is the first automatic I've owned. Also I noticed the offset seating immediately. Hated it. I solved two problems with one change. 1.I didn't know what to do with my left leg, all it did was sit around 2. The offset seating sucked Solution. I began braking with my left foot. That forces me to sit straight in the car and I don't feel like my left leg is gonna wilt walkway.
Interesting and surprising that our 23 UK i4m50 doesn't have the warning bong or speed limiter challenges you mention. It does unfortunately try to steer where it wants but at least its saved in low setting. Just needs coded off, sure it's quite easy with software.
Definitely the Lego car, I like that analogy.❤😂 lane departure pulls you into cyclists 🚴♀️ I have never seen such a dangerous device. This is an excellently detailed video on the car’s characteristics First class Joe..✅
Great vid mate, all well explained. Annoying bongs! 🤦♂️ Still think I'd get the auto, the ZF8 is so good in the M3, and so versatile. The higher revs on the motorway is annoying too, although I do the Nurburgring run in my Honda 5 speed at 5k revs! 😭😂
Amazing car mate, the bmw track day i did, we had all the M cars and at the end of the day they asked me which i would take,i chose m2, its fast fun and great on track and road, but as i need something bigger ill stick with my 340i tourer i love practical and great fun, well done mate keep it up and if your ever around Lincolnshire give me a shout, just to let you know my wife has been chosen for a new trail from the royal Marsden hospital, they have found a DNA marker in blood and can tell if its going to turn into cancer, so can treat it quicker, anyway sorry to go on but it’s amazing 🙏
My partner has a z4m40i. Has all the bongs and self steering crap. I hate it. We spoke to a service advisor a while back and they mentioned that new cars from 2026 you won’t be able to switch it off.
I have always loved the way BMWs look, even the New M3/M4s famous grill, I just think they got it right from day one. This thing however, well I really thought, my god BMW what have you done. I mean look at it. Having said that, after the 6 months or so of seeing them I have grown to absolutely love it, BMW are genius at that, their styling is so out there it does take a while to get it and then when you do, it's like wow, that is cool.
so as a road car is it as fun as the F87 comp? I had one and there was something about that car that made it loads of fun, does that something carry over into the G87?
@JoeAchilles1 How do you compare the interior and sound insulation, with that on a G80 M3? Does the cabin have more NVM, especially coming from the transmission and shifter ?
Hi Joe, greetings from the USA. Solid review. Question: if I won the lottery tomorrow and could choose a manual transmission M2 or M4 as my daily, which would you recommend and why? Keep up a great work 👍🏼.
Hi Joe, great indept video! What mobile phone holder u used, it looks really sturdy! It looks like u like using Google Map, i prefer Waze to dodge the speeding camre*!
How does a gear shift assistant work exactly? Does it essentially turn the manual gearbox into an automatic whevever you want? Or is it more like a motorcycle’s quick shifter? Where you can ignore the clutch completely? I’m learning more about cars so please excuse my lack of knowledge.
At least you guys can disable the speed alert bongs, we in India don't have an option to disable that. It bongs for some time after 80 km/h and remains constant after 120km/h😞
If the shortcut tab would remain open instead of making you swipe down every single time you touch one function it would be almost as good as the physical shortcuts in the older BMWs
Does the 2021-2022 M340i have the bongs and the lane departure assists? I was thinking of picking one up but I can't see myself turning it off every time I get in the car, I'd go insane.
the inconsistent brake "bitey-ness" I think is due to the feature they added when you suddenly lift off the gas pedal, the brake system will be automatically primed to give instant brake response. the problem is, like you said, leads to an inconsistent feeling.
Great video Joe! How would you compare this M2 to the GR Supra? Do you think they would come out with an xdrive model in the future? I currently daily my GR supra, have a few track days on it and have done some modifications to it. I'm coming up on 2 years owning the supra with 38,XXX mi/62.2 thousand km and I'm thinking of selling the gr supra for the g87 m2.

Sadly mine came on P Zeros
Top work, as usual👍
Thanks for a great review summary, Joe. Pretty accurate summation of the pluses and minuses, I think. Not a perfect car, but a damn good one.
BTW, I think it's hysterical you and Harry Metcalfe have the same "special" corner for filming videos. 😊
Excellent video
Superb review, as ever! I'd love to get my hands on one of these, but the m240i is more likely
Great review Joe!
12:40 true, the old m2 was too stiff, too quick with gas and brake, new one looks way better for normal driving
Joe great review - agree with your comments my G87 is more Fun than when I had G82. I ❤ my T.R so which colour would you choose against the very limited choice. Miss 360’ cameras thought
Love the looks of the M2…
Fantastic work
i drive g31, you are right, i have had cases as well, when car decided to brake and steer where it should not, not very safe imo.
for me thankfully its one button hold and all that is off, but nowdays that button is gone
The m240 is the first automatic I've owned. Also I noticed the offset seating immediately. Hated it. I solved two problems with one change.
1.I didn't know what to do with my left leg, all it did was sit around
2. The offset seating sucked
Solution. I began braking with my left foot. That forces me to sit straight in the car and I don't feel like my left leg is gonna wilt walkway.
21 M240i owner, and that was not a problem in that generation! I'm sorry to hear of that flaw!
A top car ❤
Love the Toronto red
Wonder how it feels compared to e46 m3
🎉sold the 4.0gts. Getting an M2. Should have gone for the MT with the 4.0.
Great video as always mate
👏👏👏
Zunsport grilles (or similar) are needed on these cars though
best review on cars for a real driver
I f4c#2 hate safety shit
Interesting and surprising that our 23 UK i4m50 doesn't have the warning bong or speed limiter challenges you mention. It does unfortunately try to steer where it wants but at least its saved in low setting. Just needs coded off, sure it's quite easy with software.
Definitely the Lego car, I like that analogy.❤😂 lane departure pulls you into cyclists 🚴♀️ I have never seen such a dangerous device. This is an excellently detailed video on the car’s characteristics First class Joe..✅
Thank god a manual is available .
Great vid mate, all well explained. Annoying bongs! 🤦♂️
Still think I'd get the auto, the ZF8 is so good in the M3, and so versatile.
I was honestly thinking of buying an M2 but the BONGs would drive me insane.
Great video Joe. Question for you: GTS 4.0 with a PDK or 992 911 GTS PDK with lightweight package, which would you take as a daily driver?
Hi Joe, greetings from the USA. Solid review. Question: if I won the lottery tomorrow and could choose a manual transmission M2 or M4 as my daily, which would you recommend and why? Keep up a great work 👍🏼.
Hi Joe, great indept video! What mobile phone holder u used, it looks really sturdy! It looks like u like using Google Map, i prefer Waze to dodge the speeding camre*!
DONG 😂 Great video bro 👊
How does a gear shift assistant work exactly? Does it essentially turn the manual gearbox into an automatic whevever you want? Or is it more like a motorcycle’s quick shifter? Where you can ignore the clutch completely? I’m learning more about cars so please excuse my lack of knowledge.
At least you guys can disable the speed alert bongs, we in India don't have an option to disable that. It bongs for some time after 80 km/h and remains constant after 120km/h😞
@JoeAchilles1 great summary. As a daily car would You take it rather than m340d?
Great roads 😜
I got this car. After installing the short shifter kit from rogue engineering, i found it much better to drive as a manual
If the shortcut tab would remain open instead of making you swipe down every single time you touch one function it would be almost as good as the physical shortcuts in the older BMWs
Hi joe could you please test 220d diesel against 220i which one is better for daily driving?
Amazing performance. Just too similar to M3/4 now. Uggh
Hmm I'm not sure it's that, my 2005 130i had that technology and it didn't ruin or change the brake pedal feel....
A great video about bongs.
