I think the OP was not made for the first episodes, rather for "the whole" which has a melancholic yet hopeful vibe of self-improvement and joy for what is life and experiences we share through it
Yeah. As a manga reader I always felt most of the people hating on it were anime onlies who thought the entire story would be as sad as the first couple episodes. The story is very melancholy and I've cried over it tons, but it's also very joyful and fun and silly and adventurous. This intro always felt like a great fit to me.
I love it but people say it don’t fit the vibe of the anime apparently ( I even like it better than oshi no ko anime and op) Hopefully the winter 2024 opening for this will be as good or even better despite already being perfection
@@LordThunderVolt true but I still must say that frieren is the better anime imo In some ways it gives Mushoku tensei vibes and is still and each episode makes me like it even more OnK had a great first episode but I still think frieren takes the cake in consistency I respect you opinion tho 👍
This song and this anime are all about "儚さ hakanasa" which is one of the core value of japanese culture. It's tough to translate but it means "being beautifully and sadly fragile". It's often used about life or memories. They're gonna disappear in the end, it's sad, but we think they're beautiful and precious because of it. That's why we love cherry blossom, the flowers are blooming and dying at the same time. Remember how beautifully put the "Oshinoko" 1ep's ending was? That's it.
God damn, i got hit hard when i first hear this full song in japanese and was worried you will not get the lyric, but damn i cried again when you realize what the whole second part was about. The last part lyric brightly shining scenes is so so sad that it always put tears on my eyes. Great reaction and thank you!
The thing about YOASOBI's English versions is that they not only keep the same meaning and rhyme, but they also try to make it SOUND like the Japanese ver that you might forget which one you're listening to. It's more noticeable in Idol imo, but it's still in this one too: compare the start of the chorus in both versions: JP (Onaji michi...) vs the English (Odyssey that we...)
Like you, i almost cried when first time to listen the second verse. Yes, Frieren have not been found herself that she loves Himmel, I think so too. This story is a journey for her to know love.
I feel like the opening is exactly what frieren the series is. Its not about the mc being sad all the times as it is about her just revieving her pretty good memories and mostly just learning to be gratefull for the heros gang. The song is mostly fast and sounds like someone explaining a story in a way to just get the point of it across without the emotional bit but does some "uoh uoh uuuoh" things once in a while being carried away by the feelings a little and then going back to the point, sorta like our elf. Honestly couldnt be a better frieren op
i feel everyone saying it doesnt fit the vibe are basing it entirely off of only seeing the first episode. the sound perfectly fits the vibe from episode 3 and onwards, which is the main vibe of the whole series
I didn't feel very strong about this op while watching the anime, but I did love the outro. But listening to the full verisons with you helped me appreciate it more and see it in a different light. It was only after the season is over did I start appreciating it. How very Frieren huh? Edit: HELL YEAH I WAS WRONG! WE STILL GOING BABY! THE (mere) TEN YEAR JOURNEY DON'T STOP
Honestly ... This song (JP version) is my favorite OP of all time ... closely followed by "Hikari No Hahen" from the series "Orange" and "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" from NGE.
It took the second verse for you to realize that this OP was a love letter for Himmel but for me, as soon as this line droppen 6:21 I knew this was going to be an emotional damage
The last scene is a metaphorical expression. The four birds are Himmel, Heiter, Eisen and Freelen. The two butterflies are Fern and Stark. The flower garden is Master Flamme. The Japanese lyrics contain many lines from the manga. I was wondering if the English lyrics are lines from the English version of the manga. It is as if the rhythm of the song is synchronised with Freelen's way of life. I love the music video and cry every time I watch it.
Of course, we understand that different individuals have different preferences. However, I feel that those who claim that this song does not suit Freelen at all do not understand the meaning of the lyrics. Regarding the reason why Japanese words are sometimes inserted into the Japanese version of the PV. This is an expression often used in Japan. Of course, they also serve as supplementary subtitles. It's hard to explain, but visual characters in Japanese sometimes do more than just convey the meaning of words. For example, you may want to emphasize a message or express an emotional atmosphere. Even if the sentences have the same meaning, the impressions and detailed meanings of the sentences are different. You can also change it intentionally by changing the type of characters used or the combination of kanji.
1:27 it's actually funny because it's an actual genre/style, Happy sad songs. The beats may be up beat, but the lyrics aren't, examples are Pumped up kicks, and Yoru ni Kakeru.
Beat doesn’t define tone of the music for me. Melody does that. And there’s almost always something deeply heart-piercing in Yoasobi’s melodies. Yuusha, Gunjo and Yoru ni kakeru all made me feel all kinds of things way before I learned what the lyrics meant
You can be melancholic without sounding like it. Yoasobi clearly sang in a depressed voice tone for this one, unlike in Idol. Edit: It's clearly a representation of how Frieren perceives time and how she desperately tries to find happiness by living a happy life, but struggles to show it in expression since loneliness and melancholy is a common dillema for elves. The elf guy we met in the previous episode, should be proof of that. Elves just have a really cruel life of loneliness, and they have to cling to whatever they can if it means they'll find some comfort in this world. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if a murderer elf appeared. You never know what loneliness can do to a mf. @@fabiospar
I didn't even realize the music video showcased a couple of characters the anime hasn't introduced yet, but as a manga reader I'm excited for when it does

Himmel fainted. Fern was not hit directly, so she survives. Stark is "too naughty." He said. Beard said: 'You're only a little boy!' Master Flamme thought he was 'cute' when he taught him. I love this episode.😂
This song is much better heard from Apple Music. I have included this song in my song playlist since a week ago. I think this song is perfect as the opening song for this anime.
I feel this opening would have been much better received if it was played for the second half of the show not the first half. On it's own it's an incredible song but with how many sad scenes are in the first half of the show it rubbed people while the ending was just otherworldly in it's compatibility with the show and writing.
I don't get the criticism. The OP greatly catches the overall established tone of "The time will pass whatever you do, whatever you don't do, with or without you, and all that will remain is memories, so get your shit together and move on, before the clock Ctulhu runs over you".
