Ozark you're right, to be honest, i'm pretty new in bucking and splitting firewood, but Ray's way of filling chainsaw is great to me and helps me a lot...you can check the video on my channel of me bucking and splitting firewood i have also shown how i sharpen the chain on my Stihl 044 with 5.5 mm file, and it's on the very end on the line but it cuts great..
Buckin Billy, i will be happy if you can also check my video and advice me with my way of bucking if i should do something better and so on...
      Thanks!

I file my low pro. 3/8 chains with a 3/16 file for about 3/4 of the chain life then I'll switch to 11/64. Same with the full size 3/8, I will use 7/32 for a bit more than 3/4 of the life then swap for a 13/64 till the end. I also don't pay much attention to the "wear line". I run my chains until I am missing 4 or 5 cutters in a row; until then they'll cut just fine.

    Billy, Buckin Billy Ray,
    the Woodman ...
    Love the gloves...!
Essential clothing for outdoor work in the winter months.
Yes the fingers are better to do intricate detail work, I'm always taking off the gloves, then putting back on. Fingerless are good to keep your hands warm and access to finger tips.
Half my work day is glove repositioning. 😊
When it's time to take the gloves off, there's gonna be a serious ruckus.
When it's time to put the gloves on there's gonna be some serious work gettin done.
Just try to be serious when your doing dangerous work and you will be safe. There's always time to goof around and have a laugh, seriously. 😉
This is general info for public consumption, our master of ceremonies usually never wears gloves, that's why i had to make a big comment.
Gloves are good, gloves are great, but they can get in the way sometimes. Get snagged, or get stuck in machinery, hinder your ability to grab small parts. But most of the time they will protect your fingers and hands.
    Be aware
    Be square (on the money)
    Care to dare

Good video..! As a humble Saw (Stihl ms170) user...I've never seen anyone mentioning the fact that all chains have two teeth that face same direction (so the user knows when they have done a full rotation) and it's time to spin the saw or your body round and start the sharpening process until you reach the same two teeth that face same direction..! Unless I'm a total fool, it eliminates a lot of time and headache working out where you need to start to fill...and all that time marking the starting point with magic markers tippex efc...Maybe I'm totally wrong

I use that larger 3/16 file on the 3/8 LP chains like Bukin' does and I highly recommend it. It does a way better job.

Great channel, thank you for the advice, I see that file guides are sold for sharpening chains (I never done this before, would you advise using a guide to keep the angle right? Or just get on with it. Greetings from England 👍

There’s always a different way to get something done. It’s good to get as many opinions and tips from people with experience as possible! Keep an opened mind and learn! And remember,,,you can’t hear when your mouth’s open!

Hi Buckin'. You had a video a couple years ago where you recommended using a larger file (approx. 1/32 larger than factory spec.), e.g.; 7/32 file on a 3/16 chain. I've used your advice and my saws cut like butter (AWESOME!!!!). Is the principle the same for 10*-15* on a chain I use on a saw mill? So if I have a 3/16 chain that I use on my mill, ground at 10 degrees, would you use a 7/32 file for the 10-degree cutter?

YOUR personal experience is the only one that can tell that.
I’m not trying to be condescending, but isn’t this one of the things that he’s been saying? Try it out and see. After all, it’s (at worst) going to be needing a refile job.
Me personally, I’d try it out. I’ve even used a 1/4”dia file for a brand new 3/8” full-size chain. It cut like mad but I quickly had to return to the normal 7/32”dia file because I was getting into the tie straps to quickly and to badly.
      But that’s just me 😁

This is fantastic!! I have a question though Buckin’ Do you file your rakers the same as before with a guide? Or more aggressive since the chain is more aggressive. I’ve been saying for years that 5/32 files are too small!

The same as you normally would. In fact, if you are using the progressive style raker/depth gauge you use the same style AND the same setting for lo-pro/pico as you do for full-size. I hope that helps.

Thank you. I remember in one of your earlier videos you stated 5/32 was too small. It appeared you were recommending 7/32 which I purchased and still use along with a 3/16 which I have not used to date. Which actually is the better choice? I use Oregon chains. Low profile 3/8.

      Lo-pro, 3/16
      Full-size, 7/32

Since seeing the reply from Todd Adams and studying this video, I switched over to the 3/16 and what a difference! I typically use the Oregon Advance Cut LowPro chains and now it's a whole new world! Chains stay sharper longer and the cutting ability is night and day from what I was experiencing. Thanks to Buckin' Billy Ray for this video and to Todd Adams for answering my question.

What about raker gauge for the smaller chains, i get confused which is needed as i use Millimetres. Even for the larger chains i don't have a clue, ones i've bought dont sit how they should, even those horrible ones that sit on top of the chain. I like the one you use Buckin, progressive one i believe but those aren't available in the UK due to tree felling not being as big as it is in US/Canade
