- When the Super Nintendo had polygons. In this technical powerhouse we play as Fox McCloud, leader of the mercenary space fighters, Star Fox. And they're the only ones who can stop the evil Andross from conquering the Lylat System.
We start off in Corneria, and work up to destroying a space armada.
and thus the Post-Sonic Clement Era begins.....
He still didn't make Freedom Planet...

I always wanted a remaster of star fox with a improved frame rate, the game always felt so sluggish and slow.
@Sir Embrum49 The Great Moth The problem is that star fox was designed around it's slow framerate. It would take some major changes to get it to work at the right speed at 60fps. The 60fps mod is virtually unplayable; it's too fast.
That would suck. The bad framerates actually helps a lot more then hurts, weirdly enough. It gives you plenty of time to react to the bad popup. The game itself was designed around it after all.
Star Fox was so ambitious with the hardware, that the developers had to design the game so that the Nintendo wouldn't blow up.
Fun fact: When the teammates are speaking, their voices are pieces of the "wing damaged" voice clips played back at different pitches.
On a somewhat related note, I still have no idea how they went from Slippy having the second lowest voice in this game to being voiced by a woman in Star Fox 64.

This is my favorite game on the SNES, and when I let my 10 year old cousin play it, he loves it, even though he dies all the time. Keep in mind he's used to Fortnite and Minecraft graphics.

Ah, watching you play the original Star Fox will be a treat! As a kid, I was blown away by the look of this game, like "I can't believe the SNES can do this!" level of impressed. I thought the Armada boss was pretty easy as well, and was surprised when I learned later in life that other people found that to be a hard fight.
Star Fox SNES OST is great, but when you get to the arranged OST with full instrumentation...nonstop jams.

Why in the world are the bounty hunting ace pilot space mercs knows as StarFox not in countless adventures?! I mean the idea writes itself! Hunting bounties, fighting the bad guys, exploring the vast universe, trying to figure out what happened or maybe where to find James McCloud...so many missed opportunities nintendo.
At least A Fox in Space is picking up the slack but I would looove a game...

I know it's like... super unlikely, but I really wish this game would get a psudo remake where it's just the same game, same graphics, but full FPS instead of the slideshow thing they had to do back in the day. Still a super fun game though, even with the limitations.

Oh, they did. 1983 in fact. Elite ran about as well, only exclusion being shaded polygons.
Mind you, 1993 was also the year of Doom. And that beat it in terms of speed and framerate. Elite II was also 1993 and ran 6x faster with 4x better graphics. Quake was only three years alter in 1996.

From what I recall hearing, I believe the Fox in this game is the father of the Fox in 64. It's been a long time since I looked into the Star Fox mythos, but I believe this team and the team in 64 are entirely different aside from Peppy. He's the same Peppy from here to at least Adventures.
Star Fox 64 is just a re-telling of this game with more lore into it. Later games have since followed the 64's story and abandoned this game's story altogether. (Except Zero, which is a re-telling of 64, meant it's another re-telling of this game. And Star Fox 2, though despite the fact it was meant to be a direct sequel, the connection to the first game was very minimal.)
It's funny, because Star Fox 64 isn't actually a sequel to this game - it's a remake/re-imagining of this game. Both games are really good, honestly - it's almost as if Star Fox 64 is the game Nintendo wanted Star Fox on the SNES to be, but couldn't due to technical limitations.

Huh. Doing another star fox game I see? This time the original though? Ok then. It's a good old school game.
I have, with my hands, played this game on a real SNES starting 20+ years ago, and it *still* makes me surprised that they got these graphics on an SNES.
Since you're doing a Starwing (that's what me fellow Aussie and I grew up with) on the SNES, have you heard of "A Fox In Space" by Matthew Gafford aka Fredryk Phox (that's his online alias)? If you have, what do you think of it so far? In short, remember the Nintendo VG shows of the 80s and 90s like "Ruby-Spears' Megaman", "Legend of Zelda" and various Super Mario ones? Well "A Fox In Space" takes place primarily before, during and after the first two games in the StairFax series with a retro animation and sound style as if it could've aired along side the aforemention VG shows. The show's style at least is heavily influenced by Classic Don Bluth animations. :D
Oh boy, it's only a matter of time before he gets to Zero. And he's made it abundantly clear how he feels about it, which sucks for me cause I actually like that game. Well until then, the original SNES game is very short and fun. It's got a great soundtrack, unique visual style, and is incredibly satisfying to beat. But good lord, level 3 is so hard!! Believe it or not, this game actually predated Doom. While it is less advanced in some ways, it is more advanced in others.
By 'predated', I mean they started developing it before ID started making Doom.

Played this on switch and the rewind function made it a really fun an enjoyable game, could keep twin blasters at all times (would like an option in the series to just always keep them, losing them and then becoming so weak sucks and it means that failure begets more failure). Great music, funky graphics, good bosses and levels. Also like how there’s 3 different versions of Corneria, it’s not just an alt route later on, it’s entirely different

10:58 Yep. StarWolf ACTUALLY makes their debut with Starwing/StarFox two for, BUTT! That game was never released back then until the late 2010s with the classic SNES, meaning Starwing: Lylat WARS on the N64 was their first debut for us at the time.
And just as Panzer Dragoon Remake got me back into 3D spaceship rail shooters, Clement starts reviewing one of my favorite series...es first game.

Really hard nowadays to feel that wow factor that this game had. I mean, this was so HUGE back in the day. I remember being so flabbergasted at seeing this. Games doing this was impossible when I was a kid. It was a huge step forward. Really hard to feel that sense of "HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS IS AMAZING" when our graphics are so good nowadays. I mean, just look at The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Modded Skyrim. Seriously, everything looks so fantastic it's almost like real life. It's awesome, and well, it never touches that level of awesome that Star Fox had when I was a kid. Except maybe Breath of the Wild. It wasn't the graphics that hit me so much as the game itself.
Oh shit! Clement is playing Star Fox. This is going to be good. Good luck with Great Commander and The entirety of Fortuna. You are going to need it.

Oh damn it Clement... You show me that I´m literally too old for that stuff.. I at 37 years old barely make it through Mega Man, either I fail at Elec Man even with the hands-up-shoot trick (I swear my controller is to blame) or I screw up the recording... BAH! - And when it comes to Star Fox? I´d never make it through the first level and you for all the gods are my witnesses, hopp into the Arwing and flying it and shooting at stuff maybe having a smoke like Cid Highwind from FFVII during all of the action, and after 18 minutes - yea see you in part 2 - with barely a scratch........
I leave you alone for a couple of months to go focus on some other tasks and responsibilities, and when I finally come back, *you've gone and let's played STAR FOX 1!?!?!?!?!?!?* What's next? A Hat In Time? (Please say yes on that last one)

Well Fox's father in this game is called: Fox McCloud Sir, he disappeared in the black hole and he become a space whales seems in Sector Y, and another two pilot named: Bear Nogucinni probably died in Sector Y and Desslar Coba disappeared in the Asteroid Belt by a enemy that send to a different dimension, as in Star Fox 64 is another continuity ignoring the previews event from Star Fox and Star Fox 2.
So I hate to be the guy to bring up Sonic on Clement’s first playthrough after finishing the Sonic retrospective, but I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I think a Sonic game in this on rails, highly replayable, arcade-y kinda style would be awesome. I know Sonic and the Secret Rings and Black Knight try to do this, but (especially for Secret Rings) they have some weird/janky controls in some instances and they throw in all these missions that are so counterintuitive to the “on rails” action and spectacle of what it’s trying to be.
All they gotta do is make a game where it sort of plays like those games, but you’re using a normal controller, you can’t actually stop and walk backwards, and when you run into stuff and take damage you just sort of tumble through it and slow down a little bit. Then it could be all about non-stop speed, jumping sliding homing attacking and weaving in and around obstacles, spectacle, challenge, and replaying stages to get higher and higher ranks and faster and faster times. I think that could be awesome! Basically just doing what the story book games were trying to do, but cutting all the unnecessary and unfun fat. And you could even have splitting pathways like Star Fox, depending on how you beat the level. Like maybe there’s some alternate pathways in some of the stages that lead you to different bosses and, by extension, different Zones.
In both of the asteroid fields, sector x and venom's orbit if you purposely skip the blue mid-point supply ring, a little just before the boss a silver phoenix will appear and throw out 4-5 yellow rings which more or less give you just as much recovery as the blue ring does. The phoenix does move a little erratically so you might not even get all of them, more of a novelty
13:02 If you don't shoot down any of those 3 fighters your entire wingmen comes in and guns them down, or if you left 1 to 2 standing then the respective wingmen will come and save you. Nice little team work there
I too struggled with the atomic base boss back then, kept clipping into the walls for trying to shoot down those power generators, the hit detection was awful. Anyway if you don't want to deal with the hassle and risk breaking your wings you can just use 4 nova bombs to finish that boss

Anyway I remember when i was like 10-13 years old and found out what an internet was I decided to look up what that star fox for the SNES that was always mentioned in smash bros was and where that corneria theme in brawl came from since it sure as hell wasn't from 64 which I had played, and then being annoyed at how it never seemed to be on any virtual console. Glad it's finally started getting rereleased. Still prefer 64 but OG star fox's some good arcadey on rails action and god the music is killer.
Space armada is such a hype level I love the idea of just blowing through an enemy fleet in any space shooter.
Going to do an "ACKSHULLY" here, but the melee star fox theme is actually a medley of venom, the map theme, and the space armada (and yes, the theme for venom does not actually play on the stage named venom, but instead on corneria. funny ain't it. Least ultimatre appropriately renames it to "Star fox Medley"). Brawl has seperate remixes of the main theme, corneria, and the space armada on their own.
My God... Looking at it now... My brain is telling me that's the game I played but also saying "no no this is all wrong, it looked so much better than this"
