Another great video. I think it's a good comparison. I have a 6 speed manual LS1 with a 216/220 cam. It has .600 lift and is on 112 LSA. I love the punch it has at low to mid range. In particular with CNC heads and smaller exhaust. All while driving beautifully with no real lope. So smooth! With a larger cam in the same combo, I did not enjoy the lack of low to mid range in comparison to the smaller camshaft. So, I went back to a small cam. Like shown here, it didn't look like that much difference on the dyno sheet, but it felt very different to drive. On the street, it feels much stronger. Tuner said the same.
Mate, I’ve spent the last week watching all your videos/reviews, love it all, keep them coming! Yes… it’s going to make my decision even harder!!! Your the man, Thanks…
I cant wait to see the overlay of all the cams, from vcm, crow, brian tooley etc when your done. It will be the go to source for all things ls1 when your done!
I’ve got the vcm 532 cam in my ls1 vx. Awesome little cam that performs well with the standard stall. It sounds great and low down performance is great.
It would have been fantastic if these videos existed 10 to 12 years ago when everyone was camming there cars and there wasn’t much info around or many cams to choose from. Top work mate good honest reviews but never knocking anyone down
Best channel for realistic feedback that we can trust. Regarding converters and diff gears, could you put together some advice on matching them to a specific camshaft etc Cheers
if given the opportunity, you should try the VCM883. i ran that cam in a VE 6L and loved it, so much so i kept it in after i built the motor to 404ci. Would be interested to see it in an LS1 and the curve against those 3.
Great work mate, learning a lot here with the information you're providing, it's helping me narrow down my search what camshaft to choose. Looking forward to more Cam testing vids! Cheers.
Definitely a nice bunch of cams. I got the vcm480 definitely recommend 2800-3k stall I got the 2500-2800 use it as a daily and it can be alittle annoying some days. but pulls hard sounds mint and definitely not worried about pulling out of a lane and sending it.
wow. VCM532 a stud .. as if you'd notice 6rwkw right at the peak, from idle to 6k it dominates the bigger alternatives .. if you did a "deaf" test i bet the 532 would impress the driver the most, meaning the others could only win on wank factor. Sums up the cam market i think, consumers are mostly the bottleneck. Great info mate, brilliant series to date.
Another awesome video Stathi. It might be worth talking about overlap and how it effects the power curve as well as the driveability and smell. Definitely put the Crow 871036 on the list. I think viewers would also be interested to see overlays of similar cams in the same engine combination I.e. VCM532 vs BTR Red Hot etc. Keep up the great work 💪
@IndependentMotorsports that is the goal. If it had a narrower LSA it would chop on idle a lot more. Was looking at the BTR truck Norris. Similar profile, just tighter lobes for that angry idle, but still keeps the low end torque for driving without needing to slip the clutch ect. Cam is the last thing on my list. Going to build the engine first. Stroke kit, port heads, and seriously looking at ITB system for the intake.
@@russcole5685 If you're building something for torque ITB's is the last thing you want to be using, you want to keep the manifold runner as long as you can.The stock manifold it's best for this. Don't overthink it or overcook it you will end up building something completely opposite to what you need. My personal recommendation is keep it as a stock stroke & bottom end configuration with a good set of heads, stock manifold and a vcm 532 with a small converter And it will be awesome at half the price of what your initially going to spend.
@IndependentMotorsports Oh nice. Great advice. Thank you. I was looking at the Redux ITB system, A they look great😂 it's a straight clean run into the ports, B dyno charts say that add horse power across the RPM range. My 04 VY clubsport manual, done 240K Km's. It's getting tired, compression is even across all cylinders, but down to 100psi. That was making me think I need to do ring's/pistons, and while I'm there I might as well do all the bearings as well. Adding a crank at that point is a lot of extra coin, but is no extra work, and it's free torque/horses. My goal is to reach >500Ft/lb torque, >550Hp. Close to. Thanks for your advice. It's difficult to find readily available parts here in New Zealand, so I'm investigating and trying to learn what is best as a one off build. Less money spent, to get the desired result is of course the better. 👍 I'm thinking a hone and stroke to 383, and a good head clean up (porting, planing, maybe 11:1 static compression) would be a great start. Vcm532 or BTR T/N cam would be the go to as well. Sorry for the long response. Just trying to give you a better idea of my thoughts to help spilt ball a great recipe
I have a 532 in my wl statesman (vz) 5.7ltr along with diffilpo extractors Redback cat back and 3.23 diff ratio with a tune from vcm Good combo all round heaps of tourque and not bad in the topend yes it doesn’t rev high 5800rpm but it does exactly what I wanted good drivable manners
great content indeed mate, any plans on doing this with the 6.0l tho from a ve perhaps, i feel like that there are ALOT of ve's out there espesially with the 6l90 trans. also still very intersted to see the range of gm motorsport as they do seem to achive some insane numbers.
my vcm 11 vz went 11.80 at 116 mph 4l60e 3.9s stock heads SBE 3200 stall this cam works well with the 10.5 -1 and has a could dynamic compression ratio i often beat cars that make much more power than my car id like to do some ported heads and see how she goes before i wack my s369 proboost turbo setup
Great video and very informative. Im thinking of getting the vcm480 in a 2009 wm. L76. I will have to do a DOD delete. If i do get the vcm480, is a stall convertor needed or can i just use the standard auto?
Truly appreciate the effort, mate. Do you think the 532 would suit a manual with a mag 2300 blower for daily driving? The cam that's in it is similar to the 480 and it's a bit of a pig... It rips, but fk me dead...
What is your opinion on the crow 1249 vs the vcm 480? I guess the 480 might make a little more torque and sound more cranky. Would they have similar driveability?
Would love to see the vcm 480 vs truck Norris Also when do they start making power I know vcm say around 2400rpm on the 480 and btr from memory are around 2600rpm ? Also what would be better for long distance fuel economy not a big deal but still considered mainly looking for torque sound and power is nice also but not really needing a heap of top end Trying to figure out a good choice for a Nissan patrol manual on 35s 4.3 diffs Already have all cam supporting mods Duel springs hd pushrods ls7 lifters ect
The VCM532 would be the best candidate for your application, It makes good bottom torque from 2000Rpm without sacrificing too much peak power It also has a good balance when it comes to fuel economy And drivability.
@ I did run the 532 in my other ls patrol and a 5sc in my other turbo Gu I’m building now so was looking to change it up with this one a little try something different I did love the 532 in the old build was an awesome cam
Ok the next best thing is the BTR truck Norris that will certainly change things up, it's a real choppy camshaft at idle and makes a lot of torque. @@ashleybryant2751
Loving how informative this series is
Thank you I'm glad you're enjoying it

3 years on it still rips

Hanging for this
Im putting a vcm480 in my car next week thanks for the video
You will love it it's an angry Camshaft
Great work Stathi and appreciate your honest thoughts!
You're welcome keep up the good work as always.

The VCM532 is a standout for me, I was actually surprised if I go back for all the data it actually makes it into our top 6 LS1 camshafts
These videos are gold

Thanks Stathi for all your effort, would the vcm 480 in a ls3 be similar to the vcm 532 in the ls1 your testing
Very different camshafts however the 480 will work very well in an LS3
The 883 would probably be great in an ls3. Or the 11 if you want to go a little smaller.
215/223@111lsa on Comp's LSL lobes has been a winner for me since 2011... With good heads my LS1 M6 makes consistent 300rwkw+ on the rollers.
Im thinking very hard about stroking my LS1 VY clubsport manual to 383. That 532 sounds like it might be the great combo for absolute low down torque
The 532 is a fantastic camshaf and if you're building a lowdown torque monster then this will be perfect
