    I do purchase one plant occasionally to test it out in my garden. If it does well, I will take cuttings or divide it to establish a grouping. This approach does take time and effort.

      Yes I do that too 😊... But it can take a few years to get established plants. I don't mind waiting on most cases.

    Related to #2. I would say focusing exclusively on blooms. After the blooms are gone, consider what the foliage and plant structure will look like.

      Yes, texture and form 😊 good one

      100% I barely think about blooms unless it is something that is very long-blooming. Everything else is primarily chosen for its foliage or structure and the blooms are a bonus.

    one thing i learned the HARD way was not really allowing for the "maximum" size of some perennials. my bloody dock (aka red veined sorrel) behaved for a year and then got HUGE! and had to be pulled.
    so now i assume they will hit maximum size until proven otherwise. i advise planting annulas to fill space as the perennials grow up.
    Oh, this is Fabricdragon's garden specific channel- i subscribed as this one too

      Ah yes, I still plant too close together sometimes! But using annuals to fill in is also what I try to do while they grow. Thanks for subbing!

    So... how would you design a primarily edible garden? combining food and curb appeal?

    • @PrettyPurpleDoor
      @PrettyPurpleDoor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Many cottage gardens incorporate edibles. So I'd look into that. You'd first need full sun conditions to grow most edibles.
      Fruits are easy to incorporate. Blueberry bushes look nice. I have a serviceberry tree in my front yard that's lovely. I've often used dill, artichoke, kale and cabbage in garden beds for their texture. Plants are plants.

      It is pleasing to the eye to have more than one, but I can think of two exceptions possibly: one is with perennials that get shrub-sized, like Baptisia (false indigo). The other exception might be if you have a small garden. My husband loves his tiny garden that is in a fan-shaped area right near our cellar doors, and he gets away with planting just one of each plant, and it looks nice.

  • @terrypauloregon
    @terrypauloregon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well I’m still in the ones, twoies. I’m slow to get it going because several plants were in pots and I planted in the landscape.
    I did this to try to get my colors, and layering figured out. Some I have put some more in areas but trying to take out some I don’t like. Or that took over.

    was thinking it over a bit and came back to add: height! obviously if you are trying to block a view, or etc you know you want height, but... a mass of plantings all the same height, or having taller stuff block the view of the plants behind it? argh!
    its very east to overlook something like "i want a whole border with various yellow flowers... and end up with the one daylilly that is 36 inches tall, towering over the rest that are 24 or less

    My neighbour was worried about my planting raspberries. She said they were invasive (I’m in Canada). We got a garden box for it in the end. But not sure I’d be worried about raspberries so much :p

    • @irynayakubu5530
      @irynayakubu5530 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your neighbour has a fair reason to worry. The raspberry is pretty invasive. You'll notice it soon. Plus, because it needs a lot of nutrition, it will escape even from the garden boxes sooner or later. You gonna find its roots 2 metres away from the plant and more.

    • @nanah2000
      @nanah2000 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@irynayakubu5530 well, then it’ll be raspberries vs normal garden weeds. It’ll be interesting to see which wins and really having more raspberries doesn’t hurt. Although there isn’t much nutrition for it to get at the moment and we have also put a barrier at the bottom of the box.
