    I made modular D&D magic item cards that you can level up and swap out the abilities! I wanted to give my players some magic items that they could keep as they go through our campaign. Giving magic items to your players in dnd fifth edition that last through the different tiers of play can be difficult because they can quickly become underpowered. Having dnd items that you can level up helps them last longer. I also wanted to introduce some of my players to the modularity that's available with different classes, without overwhelming them. Having an item where you can change out abilities on a long rest can be a fun way to get a taste of the modularity, but having limited options keeps it from becoming too much. The items I made are designed for dnd 5e, but you could take this concept into any ttrpg!
    Morg did the art for these, and I think they're amazing!

    The rest of the items, and a pdf fillable template, are available on the Patreon at the $5 tier, as well as a bunch of other cool stuff!

    What a GREAT idea! I got excited when i saw "cards" because we've been working on a trading card system for D&D - utilizing actual D&D monsters! Different concept, but I clicked right away and im glad I did! Can't wait to talk about it with my viewers during my stream Thursday, hopefully I'll send em your way!

      Oh hey, I am also in the middle of developing a TCG for DnD using the classes as Archetypes and of course clasic monsters. Do you talk about it in your streams? I'd love to tune in and help brainstorm. I come from a competitive Yugioh background but would like to make a less complicated version of Yugioh for play within DnD itself as a mini game (kind of like Season 1 Yugioh where BS imrpov basically made them play a DnD style card game in the first place, making up rules about blowing up the moon etc to make the tides go away and dry up Mako's water field, swords of revealing light someone levitating castles in the sky etc lol)

      @Vandylizer Hey there! I do talk about it and I actually have quite the community over on the Discord developing graphics for the cards just for fun 😂 Full transparency, I developed the system as a collection item in D&D that characters can spend their money on, but there's been a LOT of interest from people to take the system I have and make a game from it 🤷‍♂️ I'm actually releasing the collection as a digital bot tonight on my TH-cam stream at 830 EST if you'd like to stop by and have fun with us! Gonna be a lot of people tuning in 😊

    You could print weapons on standard sized playing cards, and print the checkboxes too, then put the cards in pro/perfect/tight fit sleeves and fill in the boxes by marking the sleeves. Room for expansion/customization by printing on the sleeves too.

    I too, want a TTRPG that works similarly to the way the book Jake's Magical Market does abilities.
    The basics are a 10 card limit and cards can be combined to upgrade them. Some cards have active abilities, such as casting a fire ball or a special sword move, most active abilities have cool downs. There are other cards that are have passive abilities or other unique abilities.
    It would mesh really well with this idea! I'd highly suggest a read or listen.

    I had an idea of "broken" magic items. Like if they were looked at with Detect Magic the thing would register but what it does isn't active. I don't remember exactly what my idea was to fix the magic but I wanted the items to have different ability that got progressively harder to fix. Just so they wouldn't have completely busted stuff to early.
    I think I might consider your idea.

    My character was killed by a plant monster, and we agreed with the DM on a nice little story with a magical curse and seeds from the plant that grew into my body through my wounds. My character came back as a reborn spore druide (because plant monster & seeds), and gained a nice magical weapon which is a thorn vine symbiotic weapon that grows out of my hand (based on a whip weapon). Here are the current stats:
    -----------------
    Citrullus Symbiotic Thorn Vine Whip
    Weapon (Whip), Uncommon (requires attunement by a Druid)
    Attack Type: Melee
    Reach: 10ft.
    Damage: 1d4 + [proficiency bonus - 1]d4 acid damage + ability modifier
    Damage Type: Slashing
    Weight: 3lb.
    --
    Properties:
    Finesse, Reach
    --
    This long, whip-like vine is covered in thorns and is a symbiotic weapon that grows out of your hand. As a bonus action, you can sheathe the whip by causing it to retract into your hand, or draw the whip out of your hand again.
    To attune to this symbiotic weapon, you wrap the whip around your wrist for the entire attunement period, during which time the whip painfully embeds its tendrils into your arm.
    A creature hit by this weapon takes an extra [proficiency bonus - 1]d4 acid damage as the weapon’s power grows with its host.
    Symbiotic Nature. The vine cannot be removed from you while you are attuned to it, and you cannot voluntarily end your attunement to it. If you are targeted by a spell that cleanses the corruption out of your body, your attunement to the vine ends, and it is destroyed.
    Cursed. You cannot use other weapons with your main hand while you are attuned to the vine.
    Druid focus. The vine can be used as a druid focus while it is in your hand.
    -----------------
    We have plans to evolve the weapon, but my DM needs to think about its new powers first. My current ideas are:
    - You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic whip, but attack rolls made against plant and undead creatures with this weapon have disadvantage.
    - When you successfully attack with this weapon, you can choose to entangle the creature and keep it captive by using your action each turn. A creature restrained by the vine can use its action to make a Strength check against your spell save DC. On a success, it frees itself, and you will have to use a bonus action to summon a new vine. OR alternatively we can just make it so that I can cast Ensaring strike on it (would be simpler but potentially more powerful).
    - You can grow a less powerful version of this weapon into your offhand that can be used with two weapons fightning (probably same damage of 1d4 + [proficiency bonus - 1]d4 acid damage, but without the additional powers that we will be adding to it).
    - When you hit a target with the vine, thorns fly out to nearby ennemies, dealing 1d6 acid damage in a 5 feet radius around your target
    As for how it will evolve, we haven't decided yet, but I think it would be nice to gain a new power when I gain a new point in proficiency, and it will involve some cut scenes (where I go back see a druid master or something like that to help me unlock new powers)

It's 50 different content creators doing a 3 minute video talking about what they like about D&D. I splice it together and add credits. Idea is each person introduces the next, so need all 50 before we get starting. Would you like to participate?

    I love this idea! I've always hated the fact that the +1 weapon that might have carried the character through the toughest levels gets handed to another character or worse, sold off as trash treasure. My fix (which was much simpler than yours but also MUCH less refined) was to add half the character's PB to the item (if it was a weapon) or allow it to grant a spell or Feat (if not). Your idea has SO much more depth and versatility! It's brilliant!

    Do it just like in stories - give the heroes one or two overpowered items early and it becomes a big part of their story. Not 1 for each player; that's cheesy. But maybe give them to less dynamic classes (like Barbarian or Champion Fighter) or less experienced players. MUCH fantasy fiction is about 1 or 2 characters with powerful magic being supported by other characters. It works fine to great.

    I'm definitely going to steal some of this. One of my player's character's has a dagger that steals a small portion of his XP to level up but I'm not sure the value of being a level behind the rest of the party actually matches the usefulness of the dagger.

  • @xXItzcoateyXx

    I love this idea! I have one question though - how do you intend players to gain levels in the slot 1 ability? Do they add a dot every time they crit or simply land an attack with the weapon? As they wouldn't have any activatable abilities unlocked yet.

  • @davidbenjamin4260
    @davidbenjamin4260 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I love the idea, but i think that restricting the initial attunement to require a critical hit with the weapon is asking a lot. It removes the player from the equation, leaving them hoping for a die role to allow them to even get the base level of a magic item. By level 4 or 5 a player is likely to have a +1 item (or the equivalent of), so doing this instead could limit them. A +1 doesn't seem like much, but over time it means the player hits more often and does more damage. I would suggest they attune as any other magic item and start with the +1 bonus.

  • @jandepaepe4262
    @jandepaepe4262 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The fact that the upgrades is pretty cool, but I think you missed a cool opportunity to upgrade the visuals of the item when you upgrade it, by overlaying the extra visuals on top of the old visual.
    You could go from a sword to a sword with cool gilded details added to the hilt, to a gilded sword with flames licking the blade for example

    Seems like a fun and interesting idea. I believe DnD 4e had some features like this. With the hundreds of magical items in officially published books, I'm guessing you're leaving those as is. This seems more relevant for extremely unique magical items, artefacts, or sentient items. From the examples you presented, you did this on extremely unique magical items, or homebrewed items. The modularity gives you a lot of flexibility to try features and if they're unbalanced then you can more easily adjust. This could be fun for mastercraft magical item creation too.

    This is great! I just did something like this in my home game, where the player found an intelligent magic sword, but it's not all that intelligent yet. The sword will level up, becoming more powerful and more dangerous even to the wielder. I think I'll make a sweet card for it like this. Thanks!

    I've done something similiar to help "level up" my players current weaponary. They can find elemental crafting runes as rewards which can be applied to a weapon to make it better, making a standard weapon +1. They also come with an extra damage charge which they can expend on hit (damage depends on the element of the rune) which recharges each morning.
    This gives the players the choice of which weapon they wish to improve and a bit of player narrartive as one of them is a smith and so improves the weapons for the party

    This came at a really great time for me! I've been workshopping a magic weapon system for a campaign I'm writing up right now. I want them to scale with the players and I decided to have items found throughout the world which can be used to upgrade the weapons, and there will be three tiers of upgrades. I have a section on my custom character sheets where the weapon card would go, and I very well might steal the transparent film idea. Great stuff as always!

      @i_am_not_a_pro_but_lets_try 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      had more thoughts about this idea - it doesn't need to just be for weapons. maybe the player was left an amulet by a grandparent - and it only becomes attuned the first time they receive a critical hit/die/get hit by specific damage type. same for a shield or armour. all sorts of interesting things you could do - maybe it contains the soul of an ancestor, and as it awakens, the soul could have its own agenda - could even become a Big Bad, or just become a cursed item.......

    Aghhh! I don’t like this, and I’m grumpy! In my day we didn’t have “transparent printer film” to make “modular item cards.” In my day you had a Crown Royal bag full of dissimilarly colored dice and a Mountain Dew. You went over to your friend’s house without a notebook cause you were an idiot, and you wrote the details of your magic mandolin on a 7-eleven receipt only for your mom to wash your pants, reducing the mandolin to a pocket full of crumbly wet paper, and you said, “Oh no! I can no longer cast bardic inspiration for free because I’m a moron!” And that’s the way it was and we liked it! We loved it!
