      Sherie kinda feels like a mobster. A lobster mobster. I still prefer Pat Carroll, she feels so evil and seductive. I feel like she’s putting on act to manipulate Ariel but you know she’s willing to kill her at a moment’s notice. Also the character was loosely based on drag, and Pat’s voice kinda sounds like a tired yet fabulous drag queen.

      You need to be more objective when you compare the different iterations of the character. Judging by the way you talk about the actresses, It’s very obvious to me that you are a Melissa fan and completely dislike Queen Latifah.

      It makes since that Ursula in the original is trying to be more upbeat and happy because she is trying to foul Arial into thinking she is a good person who wants to help so she doesn't want Arial to be scared away.

    i actually like the original being lighter because ursula is trying to sell ariel this idea that she's this kind lady who help people, she's trying to get ariel to trust her; meanwhile in the new one the way melissa is singing is showing more the "true nature" of the character, which in the story doesn't make much sense because ariel wouldn't trust her even if she's desperate.
    both are great, but i think the original works better with the context

    • @MsShayshay8101
      @MsShayshay8101 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I think it works because in the Part of Your World reprise, Ariel basically conveyed that she is willing to do anything to be a part of the above world. So the first opportunity she had, even though she was a bit reluctant, she took it. The line Ursula said about her dad really pushed her over that edge to make the deal even though she didn't trust her.

      Vocally Melissa was better IMO, but the original is the best at singing as the character. The original sang that song the way Ursula should sing the song: lighter, seemingly sweet and sincere, but really a manipulative liar. Vocal quality, Melissa is best. However, the original singer actress sings in character the best.

    • @angelux2793
      @angelux2793 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think also the reason og Ursula sounds happy or almost gleeful while she's singing is not just because she's pretending to be sweet and sincere, but because she's proud of what she does. Proud of her abilities and history of Faustian bargains. And now she also 2:15 gets to start exacting her revenge against Triton at long last.

  • @Kayjee17
    @Kayjee17 ปีที่แล้ว +397

    If you watch the original animated movie, Ursula worked and waited a loooong time for this opportunity, so she's doing her best to appear like a friendly, misunderstood person in order to get Ariel in her clutches. Frankly, anyone with half a brain would run far far away from Melissa's Ursula - and while Ariel has been portrayed as young and inexperienced, she's not stupid.

      What I got from the new version, was that Ariel was very aware of how dangerous Ursula is, but at this point she was tired of her father and his disapprovals, and Ursula was the only one that was giving her a "solution" to her problems, so she took the only opportunity that she had. We know that she didn't trust Ursula, she tries to leave a one point. This Ariel is a lot more proactive than her animated counterpart, so I guess for this version it makes sense why she stayed (and also Ursula's pets lowkey drag her there)

    Pat Carroll's Ursula is always going to be my favorite. Her slightly lighter vocal take on the song betrays her con-artist glee that Ariel is in her clutches to forward her own (Ursula's) agenda. Ursula has two faces in the course of this song: the sales-person/con-artist and the real Ursula, and she ducks in and out of them at various points. One has to remember that she is trying to be as unthreatening to Ariel as possible in order to hook her into the scheme. Animated Ursula's voice is very deep and husky in her dialog, but for her song, she is energized with the prospect of her finally getting what her heart desires. (Note: I am coming in with no background in vocal training.)

      Alan, apparently you don’t need any formal training to read and interpret a scene from a musical, because you just did expertly.
      This song isn’t supposed to be played straight. In the 90’s animated version this song is like “Trouble” from The Music Man. Ariel is the audience Ursula is playing to rather than us, and it’s all about putting on a show and (forgive the pun) reeling her in, so I think it’s a stronger choice to have the song show us what Ariel sees rather than Ursula’s true character. To be fair other interpretations could be equally valid with enough adjustments to support them, but personally, I Gotta go with Pat.

    Pat’s version is so iconic, it sounds so light and sweet near the start because that’s Ursula’s way of luring in Ariel, it gets darker and a bit more aggressive as the song goes on to show her desperation to close the deal so she can gain the advantage she needs.
    I really love Melissa’s version though, I like the grit to her tone and the quirks she adds to her voice for it, I do like all four versions though so it’s hard to compare especially since 2 are live and 2 are studio recordings but Pat’s will always be my fave!

    Pat Carroll's Ursula is character singing just as was Jodi Benson as Ariel. They were singing as their characters and not focused on any other way.
    In the 1989 film Ursula sounds happy because she is putting on a face and trying to convince Ariel that she was getting a good deal and that she is not a bad person. She throws in more emphasis into her acting while she sings to try to get Ariel to empathize with her. As we get to the final moments of the song she starts sounding more devious with a touch of excitement because she knows she is really close to getting what she ultimately wants.
    None of the songs in the 1989 animated film were meant to be sung by Broadway singers in the film. It is and always has been character singing in pretty much all of the Disney animated movies back then.
    The songs were adapted for Broadway, but they lost a lot in translation of the characters when the singers just started to focus on technique and not the character they play.

      Er..I had to say both Pat Carroll and Odi Benson are boardway actor or actress had boardway background.
      Remember, during 1989, Howard Ashman had pursway disney must hire a boardway actor and actress to play the role because they can sing and act at the same time.
      Both The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast follow this direction strictly.

    • @KYRSZ-gd1qt
      @KYRSZ-gd1qt ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AAA839 What I meant when I said none of the characters were meant to be Broadway singers was Howard Ashman wanted less focus on technique, more focus on emoting through song, and making the character feel natural and identifiable to anyone.
      Howard knew Jodi could sing above how she sang in the animated film, but he was not looking for that. He was looking for personality and feeling in delivery of the song lyrics. There is video of him directing Jodi and whispering to her at some point to help her get into the mindset of the character he wrote the song for.

      @@KYRSZ-gd1qt That true. Howard always say just told the story not to overly sing It. This is monologue. One of the problem with Live action is they kind of loss the balance with realistic or believability. Try to pleasing with Some group ignore the fact there had some intention to do that.
      Also Lack with space giving viewer imagination for what happen. Try to fix something that is not suppose to fix.
      When they said they are changing Howard Lyrics I can imagined How Howard would pissed and kept fighting to kept his lyrics.
      This is annoy me so much. As I grow up with Howard movie and hear so many story including his latest documentary. Disney really done the dirty work here.
      For example Some "modern fans" just disrespect the original approach both Jodi and Pat.and Kept saying new one is superior than any original. try to make the original is just for "old people" or accused them being Nostalgia. Not realize people had reason why they didn't like some changes in modern twist.

      Just to add to it- Melissa did a wonderful rendition vocally, but when it came to the actual acting I never got the sense that she was in any way being subtle in her disgust. Pat’s Ursula leans away from Ariel when she says “Pathetic.” and “Flotsam, Jetsam, now I’ve got her boys!” Which hints at the nefariousness of the deal. Melissa kinda missed that mark entirely and it makes me sad because it’s so pivotal to the characterization of Ursula.
      Pat is still my favorite because of the way her character comes through with the signing and acting, but Melissa’s was strong too in it’s own way.

    You pointed out some things about McCarthy's performance that I had not considered, and I will have to dwell on those for a bit. As a 34-year fan of _TLM_ (I was 7 when I saw it in the theater!), thank you.
    That said, there's one big issue I have with 2023's version, and it comes from more of a directing/conducting side _rather than_ a performance or acting side...
    Even though the melody is the same, and the lyrics are _almost_ identical (which were changed to fill-in two _big_ plot holes from the original movie!), the problem I have is that 2023's version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is *aimed at the wrong audience* , and I noticed that as I was watching the movie in the theater three weeks ago.
    PUS intended for strictly one person- _Ariel._ (Yeah, Flotsam and Jetsam are there too, but they've probably heard this literal song-and-dance before, so they don't really count.) She's in an unfamiliar and- to her perspective- enclosed, even claustrophobic lair, and PUS starts out quiet and even empathetic.
    _I admit that in the past I've been a nasty._
    _They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a "witch"._
    _But you'll find that nowadays, I've mended all my ways,_
    _repented, seen the light, and made a switch._
    _True? Yes._
    And as PUS builds to its crescendo- as the contract is signed and the spell is being cast- it becomes more and more intense, with Ursula feeding off of her perceived success in convincing Ariel to take her offer. That's acceptable.
    However, almost from the first lyrics of 2023's version, I can literally _hear_ McCarthy deviating _not_ in her vocal range (despite the slight change to the pitch of the song), but rather _whom_ she is addressing. I can picture McCarthy, in costume as Ursula, swaying and prancing across a *live theater stage* _rather than_ a *motion picture screen* . When she first sings-
    *_Poor, unfortunate souls_*
    _in pain, in need!_
    _This one longing to be thinner,_
    _that one wants to get the girl,_
    _and do I help them? Yes, indeed._
    McCarthy's not even looking at Ariel, no! Rather, she's looking out at _the house from the stage._ And that should _not_ be the case, not in the _slightest._
    Now, if you listen to both Sherrie Rene-Scott and Queen Latifah, yeah, they're _supposed_ to be doing that, because _they are_ on a live stage with a live audience, so the expectation- literally the nature of live theater- is they _need_ to be visually dramatic, and the orchestra and vocals should reflect that.
    I do not hold this against McCarthy (who I don't like at all, but was VERY impressed how she disappeared into the role of Ursula, wow!), but rather the decisions made by director Rob Marshall, and perhaps _some_ of that as well laid at the feet of legendary composer Alan Menkin.

    Queen Latifah crushed it. Sure the start had a few moments but to sing that well live, especially when watching the entire performance and not just the first like 40 seconds. She stayed in character the whole time, even after burning her hand on the cauldron.
    Genuinely one of my favourite actresses, ever since Chicago but especially after Joyful Noise (which is a great jukebox musical imo and would love to see on the channel but it is about religion and may cause some unnecessary comments) and her performance in the live Hairspray musical!

    Definitely the animated version is the best with Pat Carrol. I love the fact that Ursula tries to trick Ariel into thinking she is more innocent or good by sinking happy and softening her voice. Then in the end it’s too late for Ariel is too deep and committed. That’s actually a really good psychological technique that was perfected using singing 🤩!!! That’s why it will always be the best. If anything while singing she's trying to make Ariel uncomfortable and unfocused from really thinking about the deal, forcing her to make a snap decision. She doesn't show her true maniacal side until the songs finale when it's too late. Pat Carrol herself has said she got a lot of inspiration from car salesmen for this song.

I was honestly surprised at Queen Latifah's harsh review because the lady can sing. And she's singing here as the character Ursula. And she nails it. It reminds me of when I saw the movie version of Les Miserables and someone commented that Hugh Jackman couldn't sing, but he's singing as. the. character. In other performances, he sounds totally different. Queen Latifah sounds completely different. Another example: Joaquin Pheonix being turned down initially for the role as Johnny Cash, but then got the part when he came back with a whole octave lower. We're also comparing a live version to a studio version. Let's appreciate the talent

    See I think I have a bit of a different perspective on this, I feel like many people as a kid remember Ursula just being super scary, but her being happy sounding was actually her whole tactic. She wants arial to trust her and not be scared, the only times she breaks that character is when she’s talking to her minions. Her true colors show in the scenes following but in this song she is still just being deceptive to arial, hints the happier tone. That’s why I actually believe the original does better than the live action because I feel like Melissa though her vocals were amazing didn’t understand the importance of the deception behind her voice

    While I really like Melissa's performance I do think that the live action scene has the same issue with the Broadway version: it ramps up the crazy too fast. Ursula in the animated version is slow and sweet for a reason: she's trying to lure Ariel into making a deal. It's not because it's more child-friendly or disneyfied, it's because Ursula has to make Ariel trust her. I don't think the Broadway or live action version would accomplish this, with Ursula going full tilt bonkers, which any reasonable Ariel would swim away from right away.

    Pat sang it best. It's not just about the song, it's about the scene. Remember that Ursula is the family outcast that NOBODY goes near. She needs to gain Ariel's trust. She lures Ariel in with a welcoming voice. As the song progresses and she gains Ariel's trust and relates to Ariel with being misunderstood, she slowly reveals her true colors and that's the side that starts to show until it's full blown true colors. The reviewer has to look at in in context of Ursula's history with the family. She lures Ariel in with a oldness. That's where Melissa missed the mark. Pat Carrol all the way on this song.

    Melissa McCarthy definitely did it the best. She just added that little... *KICK* to it. Melissa McCarthy had that MaGiCaL singing talent we never knew she had. I agree with the original seeming a little bouncy and jazzy. Pat Carrol did it awesome, but Melissa McCarthy just carried the whole thing-

    The lyric Queen Latifah sings is "To this." It's unfortunate you didnt react to the entire performance. Her version has many new lyrics not present in the original film or in the current live action.

    I think it's unfair to compare live performances with the studio version, but Queen Latifah it was very good in the interpretation, maybe in a recording studio it would have been perfect

    The new Ariel had such good casting but what I don't understand is the visuals in all the live movies. Why doesn't Disney try to dazzle us anymore? Where's the color? Where's the choreography? It's like they got Edgar Allen Poe directing the Disney movies ☹️

    You don’t have to disrespect Queen Latifah even if Melissa did the best out of everyone

      Especially given Melissa was using the sing-song technique to make up for her lack of vocal ability.

    It is a little unfair to compare live vocals to studio ones especially when the live ones included motion. It would be fairer if the comparison was all studio versions and a separate one for live versions. Studio versions are meant to be perfect or very close to it.

    Ok so I loved how Queen Latifah was actually acting as Ursula. She gave the sass and energy of the character. Love Melissa as well. Like you said: Why compare? They're just in a different key. Pat Carrol was going for a lower more sultry vibe in her voice with mock-sympathy for her "clients" and Queen Latifah also was trying to emulate Pat's energy in the song. The broadway girl took Ursula and essentially made her sound nutty. All in all I loved all renditions of them. My favorite is the Original, but Melissa really impressed as well bringing her own flavor to Ursula.

    It's crazy hearing them back to back. I had thought Melissa's was spot on to the original but it has been years and oh my God, they're so different! What? How did i remember it so differently? I did not remember the original being that light. I like Melissa's the best because of where she places her emphasis and the character and attitude she brought to it.

    I love tituss burgess version of the song😍😍😍... and with all do respect to every female version, I will never forgive Disney for not giving the opportunity to a male actor to play the role!🙄😤 I mean you can't go wrong with tituss burgess's vocals and sassyness🤭😅🥰...but to be fair i was pleasantly surprise by Melissa mccarthy🤗

    It's really hard to choose between Melissa and Pat because both are different types of performances meant for different audiences. Melissa's overall had more emotion and feeling. It felt like it was meant for the stage. Pat's still had feeling and emotional but not to Melissa's level. Hers was meant for children to be able to sing along to it. When I want to listen to the song, I put on Melissa's version and when I want to sing along- I put on Pat's. Melissa's version is more dramatic and deliberate. I love both versions a lot.

    remember little mermaid was a big comeback for disney, and for kids. it became a big hit, because adults loved it too, pat carroll was the originator and said they made her sing so low that she had trouble with her vocal chords. the original part they were playing on getting bea arthur!

    I love the original because of how it starts at sweet and light and then the decent into darkness and crazy town. Melissa starts it a little to dark.
