- This is it. Not the feature-length film, nor the 6-part Ken Burns documentary she deserves, but this is it. The start of our coverage of the work we're doing to "THE FIVE." Big Boss Porter. Port of Grays Harbor Porter No 5. A 2-8-2 Mikado, this engine was the workhorse of Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad for decades. Relegated to a dusty back corner, we were told this engine was beyond all help and would never be restored. We're finding out for ourselves.
We're a nonprofit organization and despite our irreverent tone, we are passionate about heritage rail preservation, economic development, and especially - Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. Check out more about our nonprofit at whim.org and support us on Patreon: / mtrainierrail

Glad the "Awesome Trains" engine is coming back.
Dang, I remember seeing this when I was a young boy.
Rowdy having a cigar while inside the boiler torching out the tubes is a mood.
I'm really glad you guys are already able to start working on a second engine, that's really exciting and speaks volumes about how well things have been going, despite all the set backs at first.
Just don't bite off more than you can chew, guys! Remember to relax and do for yourselves once in a while!
Relax?!? What's that?
@@mtrainierrail This is exactly the type of response I was fully expecting... Lmao
@@mtrainierrail no time to relax, you gotta de-tuuuuube!
@nickturinetti2884 Ouch...foamer.
Never say anything cannot be restored hell we said that about big boy give the 5 her life back and lets let her roll again on the high iron!!!!
I know right
This Locomotive Attended The Wenatchee Winter Olympics In 1989 Along With The Famous Southern Pacific #4449(My #1 Favorite Steam Loco). Glad To See #5 Getting The Attention It Needed.
Number 5 is actually my favorite locomotive on the Mount Rainier roster, I first learned of her from the VHS tape Awesome trains back in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Hahaha, I think that's me at 0:40. Spent a lot of time down there with my dad in the early 90s, but I wonder where the photo could have come from? Didn't expect that, lol!
I've got my fingers crossed for 5. Seems like a great option for your operation. 70 is in the best shape she has been for a while. With y'all at the helm, 5 will get the love she deserves.
Holy cow, this is great! It's been sitting in a back corner for over 20 years, and I honestly thought I wouldn't see this engine run ever again. Super happy about all of the work the volunteers and staff put into this! I know that Polson Logging #70 is currently using Porter #5's old whistle, but it would be great to see the whistle moved from #70 back onto #5. Would be just like back in the old days, when Porter #5 would spot that beautiful Ashton 6-inch 3 chime whistle!
its an absolute tradgedy that this channel has not exploded yet.
Keep up the amazing work!
Number 5 Still has a lot of life left in her. Kudos to you guys for giving her more life. Last time I saw her running was in a DVD
Ah yes, everyone want to drive the train but this is the realities of what truly needs to be done. I used to volunteer at a now defunct preservation center, I remember once we even had to get under the loco and and change the grease-pads/bearings around the driving wheel axles. One funny memory was fitting the smokebox front on and tea-time came around so we left it hanging and went for tea, came back an hour later and carried on haha.
To see No. 5 in steam again would be a dream come true.
Huge respect to you fine folks for always getting it done!!! Working on boilers of this size is dusty, dirty, sweaty work… but that Timelapse sure made it look easy!! Super fun series to follow, thanks for sharing the journey with us all across the country. 🔥
I love the production style for video's, real people not sugar coating what it takes to operate a small railroad (on top of mainly steam powered railroad). Nothing is impossible with money and determination, Mt. Rainier crew is definitely not short on the latter. It's a great thing your crew is doing with the railroad, keep up the hard work. Cheers from the great white north eh.
I remember seeing this as a kid when we visited Mount Rainier scenic
Holy gahd 🔔 what the f!*k was that😂, had me rolling rowdy, had a few of them moments around the shop myself, keep it up from the east coast
I love your railway, your locos and your vieos. Even the music isn't too bad! By the way, Rowdie, if you ever have a heart attack it won't be stress, it'll be those cigars! From S. Africa.
So excited to see 5 getting some TLC. One of only eight Porter mikados ever built.
I first heard of the 5 in the movie "The Rock Trains", and instantly fell in love with her. Now, I may be able to see her in person. Thank you so much for doing this.
i like rowdy's take on the oompa loompa song. very funny. keep making these funny/educational videos in the back shops.😅🤣
Sure wasn't expecting to see 5's flues coming out of her cab over the smokebox, but was a unique sight to watch.
Rowdy, you sent chills down my spine when you were talking about the tube practice. Yikes! So glad nothing happened.
Entertaining and Educational. Looks like your shop is a lot of fun.
"Had to be steam engines. Could have been ANYTHING else. Porn, Hollywood....HAD to be steam engines." My first spit-take of the new year :)
It's terribly unfortunate the job wasn't done right the first time. I greatly appreciated you guys are taking the time to video all of this and explain what's going on. Perhaps your videos can be used to help preserve the knowledge of how to properly take care of these locomotives. Thank you for your efforts and Good Luck, I hope things turn out for the best.
Here’s the thing (as I see it) - renegade operations like MRSR popped up all over the country in the 80s and early 90s. A bunch of fine folks literally saved pieces of rusted scrap metal from total disintegration and brought little heritage railroads to life across the country. They saved and preserved the relative few steam engines and other heritage rail equipment wasn’t a victim of WWII scrap drives (and who can blame them). The “industry” was fledging and they made do with what they had, we owe a lot of those folks and wouldn’t be here without them. We’re now in the 2nd, moving into 3rd iteration of the heritage rail industry, and we’ve been able to learn and build on the knowledge of those that came before us. We’d be doing it wrong and wouldn’t have learned anything if we weren’t “doing it better.” (Tongue-in-cheek) We’re just hoping that by being transparent and open about what it takes to bring our little piece of that world back to life, we can help the industry as a whole, help preservation efforts, and spark a lot of discussion on how to keep “doing it better.” We are absolutely going to get it wrong along the way too, but hopefully someone will learn from us.. -Bethan
@@mtrainierrail very well said
Great Work. Hopefully in some SMALL way my video of the #5 double heading with the #15 Chehalis Cowlitz and Cascade back in 1989 that YOU guys rebuilt helps.
I remember seeing a Pentax video of the 5 going on the mainline for a event and doing excursions A hot wheel bearing and other fun stuff happening in that video.
Hey Have a Happy New year guys- i am sure Port # 5 will be fully restored to her former glory and be in service again. :D
Very informative very educational. I always had a couple questions about the tubes how they worked in conjunction with the flu sheets. There’s an old saying if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If a procedure was developed a long time ago just stick with. Just don’t stuff them in and weld them. I wish everyone there well on this project. Can’t wait for the next video.
Please be able to restore the 5!
Wow this is simply going to be amazing to see her steam again one day... thank you for documenting this and I'm looking forwards to watching more of the process!
We had a boiler that had that exact same issue with the tubes. When we started cutting the rube sheets literally popped back into place.
Interesting crown stays
Get 5 fired up again!
Love the work you guys are putting in. Happy New Year! 🎉
Watching you hammer out those tube ends made MY arms and back hurt.. Wish you had a air hammer or some other power tool
Rowdy and Chris were hurting. They did this and then went and crewed on the 70 all weekend.
All you need is an air hammer, a hose, and a hook up to 70's main res.
@mtrainierrail wish I was able to work like those guys! Guess I'll just have to help by throwing money @ the 5 😂 Also just joined y'alls patreon!
You made the comment, the tubes look damn near new.
I wonder, can the ends be cut short and the tubes reused in a shorter boiler on the railroad in the future?
FRA wouldn't approve. 15 year Clock starts 1 year after the first tube is installed or the first time it is fired up, whichever comes first. While they may not be able to trace the tubes coming from another boiler, if they found out, you'd be told to do it over. at least all this is my guess.
That said, if you take tubes from one locomotive and stick them in another after the former's tube time is up, the quality of work would come into question. they may LOOK new, but looks can be deceiving, it's better to start with fresh tubes IMO. Now if youy just want to stick tubes in an engine for display that doesn't have such (say you're opening up the smoke box and firebox for others to peak in to), that's another story.
I’m curious if there’s any good news on rebuilding number 5 I hopefully look forward to having this Porter locomotive return to service
What ho the railway peeps, can I ask ?who chooses the music?its very good, All the best from sunny Troon, Scotland 😊

i want to see the 5 run
Do I remember there has been some discussion of acquiring ( trading?) the tender for a proper logging loco tender? Is the 5 thought to be in better shape than the 17? ( never remember whether it is the 17 or 16.)
I hate to sound like a foamer, but if she does get restored, we will definitely need a doubleheader with 70 at some point, they are two of the staple engines of Mount Rainier scenic Railroad, but have never run together
I do believe the group themselves are foamers so, most likely lol
@seymoarsalvage Ouch, that hurt! We're not saying you're wrong...the foam is highly contagious.
@@mtrainierrailI mean that in the most supportive way possible ❤😅
This may be a dumb question, but why is it OK to solidly weld the ends of the fire tubes on marine-type boilers but not on locomotive boilers- I would think the stress from heat expansion would be the same.
Safe bet she needs everything from the dome down? I remember it had tubes leaking back in the 90s, and the running gear looks HAMMERED
Don't bet too much.
@@mtrainierrail good to hear!!
that rust issue is mostly in western washington
I’m probably asking questions that have been asked elsewhere but here goes :
So is the plan to restore the 5 (if the evaluation provides favorable results) and then move onto 17?
Is there any major work on 70 planned besides general yearly maintenance?
I’m unfamiliar with the railroad’s roster so this one may seem dumb but what other projects are in store besides the steam engines? Any additional rolling stock restorations or diesel locomotives planned to return?
I love the work you guys do and this channel is extremely refreshing to see. I genuinely appreciate the time you all put into making these videos and keeping us updated on progress. Keep up the good work!
Here ya go:
1.) We still don’t know. We anticipate a decision by the end of January and you’ll all be along for the ride (and discussions). 5 or 17 🤷♀️ The 17 needs significant boiler work and running gear work but she’s not the “ideal” engine for our expanded operation planned for the future. The 5 is obviously the ideal engine (capacity, ability to do what we need) but also obviously needs a ton of work too.
2.) More working on all that clank bang. 1472 coming up in September (hopefully deferred to January 2025).
3.) Passenger car work before diesels…we think.
Thanks for watching and hanging out with us!
Wow, that was a fast reply! Thanks for responding!
I hope that the evaluation on #5 goes well. Stay safe y’all and Happy New Year.
We’re really killing that work/life balance. 😅😅
Cheers! 🥃
Which engine has the 1472 coming up in September or Jan. 2025?
70
#fireupthebestmikado
#steamthe5
What’s the tonnage of the 5 vs the 17? Is she a larger capacity engine?
Is this a saturated steam locomotive?
Yes.
So is 5 taking priority over 17?
TBD…we should know in the next month.
Boi do those tires look tired 😂 Good luck and tally ho!
They had a 20-year nap so not sure what their excuse is…🙃
You could’ve should’ve the number 2
As much as they would like to, rowdy said they'd need 3 rod engines to work the railroad bethan and him are envisioning (see the video titled "Flat clapped out"). Additionally, geared locomotives aren't able to go as fast as rod locomotives.
So, what's Happening?
A full survey and evaluation to determine if she’s a good candidate for restoration.
@@mtrainierrail ...Right on !
