I'd be careful if you plant to go outside of the major cities if you are or look American. Anti-American sentiment in China has been growing very quickly. The majority of people will still be very friendly, but there is a very scary minority that you need to be extra careful about.
@@AnzuBrief With the current situation yes I think you shouldn't have too much trouble, but if people staring at you with animosity bothers you may want to reconsider China for the time being (Taiwan is a great, always friendly alternative). Even in first tier cities you'll get vicious stares for a few days or weeks whenever the US does something that negatively affects China. Local places you frequent to buy food can also go from friendly to giving you the stink eye. It really is a horrible feeling, especially if you arrive and become complacent with how friendly people are only for it to instantly do a 180 and become a very scary place to live. @@WolfersHD Thanks for the advise! I am a Spanish citizen so I can't get a job in Taiwan. I can handle a few angry stares unless it turns physical, in return for a year abroad in Asia.
I like how this video make fun (mock) of both sides. For example, while some Chinese are able to watch those American TV shows and movies, but as for researching about it probably doesn't have much information that they can gather, cause the Chinese internet are blocked most outside source ( which you can see why they picked those names ). And the same for the American here too, they don't know much abouts the other ( cause American of the US only know the US). Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this.
We should use our own name. When I studied in Canada, one day my supervisor asked me why I use English name. I told him because most people can’t pronounce Chinese name. He said “can you pronounce my name correctly? (He is German)” I said “ I may not, but I will try my best”. my professor said “ then you should keep using your name, I will try me best too.”
Maybe its an Anglo thing? When i was in school, i remember one time we had a group of British exchange students attending our school for a few weeks. One day one of the exchange students comes up to me and asks "Do know where Darryl is?" (im paraphrasing, its been about 20 years). When i hear the name Darryl, I think he is asking about one of the other exchange students. So i reply "Sorry, I dont know who Darryl is. What does he look like?" The guy retorts "You do know him! I saw you talking with him earlier today". After talking a bit more, it finally dawns upon me that he is talking about one of my classmates named Tero. If he had attempted to pronounce "Tero", instead of substituting it with a vaguely similar sounding English name, i would have immediately known who he was talking about.
"Skyler" got me because... I always tried really hard to name new kids in English class something that was at least vaguely related to their Chinese given name, and once I had a kid whose Chinese given name started with "天" so I named him Skyler and then all the other teachers gave me flack for naming him a "girls' name" *facepalm* But my favorite was when a girl who was starting middle school stomped into her first class with me and announced that she was changing her English name from Alice to Desdemona. Desdemona suited her a lot better, too.
No way, it’s hard to remember them! Especially when they sound similar in English! How am I supposed to remember who was who between Tian Hao, Jun Tao, Jian Hao, etc. Why do so many names start or end with the same sound, or rhyme?! 😫 It’s easy if you read Chinese, but Wang, Wong, Huang, and Hoang are all the same to me!
@@Poemi10304 the case that you've mentioned here is because they are pinyin( not the character itself), and the fuck up things about pinyin is that every place is different.
