Its really cool you take your time in reviewing the music. If you're not aware of their channel, "Audio Lunch" are sound engineers that do Ren reactions and they will isolate vocals, bass, or drums after their reaction, and I like to hear their musical breakdown too. Nice reaction, and glad you didn't pause because you break the emotional connection to the music. I'm more into lyrics so when someone has their story interrupted too much, it can ruin the story for me as the audience, even though I've heard the story before. Nice to see you again and enjoy hearing your thoughts on music.
I feel like this piece in and of itself is a gift to the world because I have seen that It has helped more than one individual to be inspired and challenged to do the work… Wrestling with their own inner demons of expectation and ambition to produce more actual artistry... or not. Ren's honesty and vulnerability allows each to acknowledge the human condition and that there is space and grace for all if we allow it. If as individuals we can absorb this lesson, it can only improve the human condition.

As for the "devil" bit in the middle of the song, you asked about the agenda of the "bad Ren." I think the idea here is summed up in the first couple of lines of the middle bit: "I am the snake in Eden" -- i.e. the thing that ruins what could be paradise and brings Man down -- and "The beheader of Kings" -- i.e. you could be something great, but I'll end you. The idea in that whole middle bit is that this internal critic that shoots you down has always been there, since the beginning of time, tearing at every person who's ever had a thought. It's not some enemy just aimed at you, there for you to defeat and then go on to win at life. It's always been there, will always be there, and, essentially, is just a part of you. Part of being human. This, ofc, leads into the third voice in the piece: the voice of "Hope." That's the other "immortal" in the equation. Yes, you have the dark side telling you that you're nothing and you'll be nothing, but you also have the light side telling you to keep pushing forward and waiting for the pendulum to swing the other direction. Yes, the "bad voice" is eternal and immortal, but so is the good voice and neither can defeat the other. They're both part of who we are. And that informs the spoken-word part at the end as well, when he talks about it not being "David vs. Goliath" or a "battle for me to win," it's a "pendulum eternally swaying from the dark to the light," back and forth forever. It's an eternal dance, and trying to "defeat" your negative thoughts is an impossible task that will leave you feeling like a failure. The lesson that Ren says he learned and is passing along is to relax and learn to dance with the pendulum swing, knowing that, no matter how dark it gets, it'll always swing back the other direction as well, so don't fight it, just flow with it. You will never get rid of all bad and have nothing but good because that's not the human condition. Life is both. We're both. So learn to navigate within that framework and dance with it.

This was a fantastic reaction! One of the very best I've seen to this piece of art! :) I felt I got to know you a little bit. :) Love your sense of humour too! Dry and deadpan, combined with a little silliness, is, 'right up my alley' as they say! :) Another of Ren's many masterpieces! I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of Ren's piano playing. You will have heard a little of it on 'Money Ties' but there are better examples, where the piano is front and centre. There's even a piano instrumental, written for his friend Callum Mackay, titled simply "Mackay". :) Ren's not a concert pianist but he is a good pianist. Especially when you consider that he's self-taught. Ren plays about a dozen instruments and, barring a handful of cello lessons, is entirely self-taught on all of them! I've seen professional pianists react to Ren's keyboard skills before. They're often horrified, almost repulsed, by the placing, and the shaping, of his hands and fingers but at the same time they're liking what he's doing and enjoying the music. :) Please keep reacting to Ren! I'm so glad you got to experience this! We can all relate to the "Inner Critic," and I think it's helpful to keep in mind that the awful, mean voice is just trying to help us out in some way. Maybe it's trying to keep us from placing ourselves in a vulnerable situation where we might get hurt. Or maybe it thinks that it will help us to plan better, or to motivate us in some way. I feel like Ren touched on this idea here, with the lyrics, "You should be so lucky, having me inside you to guide you, Remind you to manage expectations, Provide you perspective, that thing you neglected." I wanted to know who this gut was too. I heard every interview, every song, hus vlogs called Lyme101 or Me vs M.E. , and everything i coukd gind about him. We have been on his health journey with him this last year being treatedfor brain damage and autoimmunity. He has become the voice for the voiceless, made invisible by chronic mental and physical illness. For May "Millions Missing" awareness month, he wrote out his story of the 8 year nightmare trying to get a diagnosis and treatment. Ren is an open book and doesn't hold anything back. It's one of the reasons we love him so much. Watching Hi Ren reactions never gets old. The sample of your skills you gave us at 34:39 was so pleasing to the ear! I'm not musically inclined but can say my ears pricked up at your playing. For quite awhile after viewing Hi Ren, I choked up. I knew it was very very special!
Sorry you’ve been ill, and thanks for doing this despite it, it’s a brilliant video. Actually we love all his songs about ‘how much he hates himself’, and love him for it, how ironic
To say Ren's not well is a bit of an understatement. He fell ill again after being back in the UK a few weeks. He's now back in Canada, bedridden and undergoing intensive treatment, which currently isn't working very much. Short backstory version: Bitten by a tick, got sick, months and years of immense pain and wrong medications lead to psychosis, organ issues and much more. He was bedridden for months/years. He was eventually diagnosed with LYME disease. A good Samaritan doctor reached out to offer help, which worked for a while. He then went to Canada for another treatment. That ended up being an approximate 18 month stay. He returned to the UK in September and now, 2 months later, he's back in Calgary. There's so much more to his story. He basically lost 13 years to debilitating illness. Music kept him alive. As for Hi Ren, did you note that it was a live performance with no cuts? I think you need to go in relative order of his songs to better understanding the relationship between his music and his illness. Great reaction by the way.

You did not dissapoint.. tell negative Rob to take a step back cuz there are many of us not just here for Ren but also for your unique insight and the great way you express how the music made you feel. I love seeing basically anyone experience Ren but when its amazing creative people like yourself and Nicole and Charlie.. well it adds value to the video that others don't. I loved Negative Rob and his stylish goggles.. that really was a great way to demonstrate how this song applies to all of us who as you said have to deal with our own inner voice as this masterful performance by Ren demonstrates. So often I was cursing my clumsy feet and the more i fixated on all my missteps in life the more challenging the dance became.. and they led to more missteps. Ren helped me recognize i had become my own worst enemy.. that voice doesn't go away.. but when you relax.. when you don't give that voice a power over you.. ya listen.. say.. well thanks for your suggestions but I believe I'll never know if anyone is listening unless i try.. so I'm going to post it and see how it goes.. and I am here to tell Negative Rob that i am definitely here for this talented young man and his reaction to Ren.. not just here for Ren TRUST ME. I have listened to many reactions to "Hi Ren", and I've only noticed it a few times, but there's several things I like about you right away. First, and I've never pointed this out, your sound quality is apparently noticeable because I'm pointing out. I really never noticed this, yet for some reason my ears heard this song more clearly than ever before. I knew the lyrics, but some reason I heard them perfectly this time. Secondly, I saw how long your video was, and I was certain that was not going to listen to the whole thing, but I was wrong. You're funny and vulnerable, and so that really works well here. I really loved how you made fun of yourself with those classes, spoke those words those artists here, and did this all with a flu/cough and a down on yourself. Then there's "Hi Ren" that shows how much pain one can go through, and then at the creation of your most memorable song in your most vulnerable moment...a miracle of connection with others occurs, that ripples across the world and connects with everybody. Your presentation of lighting in your background, and as I said your sound, is very soothing and comforting and you're funny. You play guitar, drums and obviously the piano, and you enjoy it. I actually am amazed that I watched your whole video. So you must have some type of power.

I'm on the side of just being a grumpy old git who doesn't give a F..... I don't give an F what colour you are, who you sleep with, where you live, how much money you have, what you think of me.... What matters to me is not "what" you are but "who" you are as a person.... What's most amazing is that Ren is a self-taught musician - Guitar, piano, strings - composer, producer, director, videographer, rapper, actor, singer, minstrel, all around good egg. Dark vs. Light. The lyrics for Ren's songs are always pinned in the comments. You get them from the source that way. If you want backstory on the Sick Boi, there are 8 Chapters of the Story of Ren (th-cam.com/video/hQP7YoQdF3Y/w-d-xo.html). Each is about 15-20 mins long and have a corresponding song. They were made as a lead up to his song Troubles, which is the "song" for Chapter 8. It's a worthwhile watch. Its really cool you take your time in reviewing the music. If you're not aware of their channel, "Audio Lunch" are sound engineers that do Ren reactions and they will isolate vocals, bass, or drums after their reaction, and I like to hear their musical breakdown too. Nice reaction, and glad you didn't pause because you break the emotional connection to the music. I'm more into lyrics so when someone has their story interrupted too much, it can ruin the story for me as the audience, even though I've heard the story before. Nice to see you again and enjoy hearing your thoughts on music.
I feel like this piece in and of itself is a gift to the world because I have seen that It has helped more than one individual to be inspired and challenged to do the work… Wrestling with their own inner demons of expectation and ambition to produce more actual artistry... or not. Ren's honesty and vulnerability allows each to acknowledge the human condition and that there is space and grace for all if we allow it. If as individuals we can absorb this lesson, it can only improve the human condition.

As for the "devil" bit in the middle of the song, you asked about the agenda of the "bad Ren." I think the idea here is summed up in the first couple of lines of the middle bit: "I am the snake in Eden" -- i.e. the thing that ruins what could be paradise and brings Man down -- and "The beheader of Kings" -- i.e. you could be something great, but I'll end you. The idea in that whole middle bit is that this internal critic that shoots you down has always been there, since the beginning of time, tearing at every person who's ever had a thought. It's not some enemy just aimed at you, there for you to defeat and then go on to win at life. It's always been there, will always be there, and, essentially, is just a part of you. Part of being human.
This, ofc, leads into the third voice in the piece: the voice of "Hope." That's the other "immortal" in the equation. Yes, you have the dark side telling you that you're nothing and you'll be nothing, but you also have the light side telling you to keep pushing forward and waiting for the pendulum to swing the other direction. Yes, the "bad voice" is eternal and immortal, but so is the good voice and neither can defeat the other. They're both part of who we are.
And that informs the spoken-word part at the end as well, when he talks about it not being "David vs. Goliath" or a "battle for me to win," it's a "pendulum eternally swaying from the dark to the light," back and forth forever. It's an eternal dance, and trying to "defeat" your negative thoughts is an impossible task that will leave you feeling like a failure. The lesson that Ren says he learned and is passing along is to relax and learn to dance with the pendulum swing, knowing that, no matter how dark it gets, it'll always swing back the other direction as well, so don't fight it, just flow with it. You will never get rid of all bad and have nothing but good because that's not the human condition. Life is both. We're both. So learn to navigate within that framework and dance with it.

Another of Ren's many masterpieces! I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of Ren's piano playing. You will have heard a little of it on 'Money Ties' but there are better examples, where the piano is front and centre. There's even a piano instrumental, written for his friend Callum Mackay, titled simply "Mackay". :) Ren's not a concert pianist but he is a good pianist. Especially when you consider that he's self-taught. Ren plays about a dozen instruments and, barring a handful of cello lessons, is entirely self-taught on all of them! I've seen professional pianists react to Ren's keyboard skills before. They're often horrified, almost repulsed, by the placing, and the shaping, of his hands and fingers but at the same time they're liking what he's doing and enjoying the music. :)

I'm so glad you got to experience this! We can all relate to the "Inner Critic," and I think it's helpful to keep in mind that the awful, mean voice is just trying to help us out in some way. Maybe it's trying to keep us from placing ourselves in a vulnerable situation where we might get hurt. Or maybe it thinks that it will help us to plan better, or to motivate us in some way. I feel like Ren touched on this idea here, with the lyrics, "You should be so lucky, having me inside you to guide you, Remind you to manage expectations, Provide you perspective, that thing you neglected." I'm looking forward to more of your Ren journey! Also, someone may have already mentioned this, but Ren always pins the lyrics to his songs under the video 😉

It's true Hi Ren is the gift that keeps on giving. Every since I saw this video I've been addicted to watching 1st time reactions to it, there's legions of us that do. He has become the voice for the voiceless, made invisible by chronic mental and physical illness.
For May "Millions Missing" awareness month, he wrote out his story of the 8 year nightmare trying to get a diagnosis and treatment. There are 8 Short Chapters where he reads them with an accompanying video.

Sorry you’ve been ill, and thanks for doing this despite it, it’s a brilliant video.
Actually we love all his songs about ‘how much he hates himself’, and love him for it, how ironic
To say Ren's not well is a bit of an understatement. He fell ill again after being back in the UK a few weeks. He's now back in Canada, bedridden and undergoing intensive treatment, which currently isn't working very much.
Short backstory version: Bitten by a tick, got sick, months and years of immense pain and wrong medications lead to psychosis, organ issues and much more. He was bedridden for months/years. He was eventually diagnosed with LYME disease. A good Samaritan doctor reached out to offer help, which worked for a while. He then went to Canada for another treatment. That ended up being an approximate 18 month stay. He returned to the UK in September and now, 2 months later, he's back in Calgary.
There's so much more to his story. He basically lost 13 years to debilitating illness. Music kept him alive.
As for Hi Ren, did you note that it was a live performance with no cuts?
I think you need to go in relative order of his songs to better understanding the relationship between his music and his illness.

Well Robbie you know how to build the suspense.. been waiting for this as i sleep at night to your relaxing Ren video.. just kidding i had read you were under the weather.. hope you are feeling better. You did not dissapoint.. tell negative Rob to take a step back cuz there are many of us not just here for Ren but also for your unique insight and the great way you express how the music made you feel. I love seeing basically anyone experience Ren but when its amazing creative people like yourself and Nicole and Charlie.. well it adds value to the video that others don't. This was really nice to watch.. I loved Negative Rob and his stylish goggles.. that really was a great way to demonstrate how this song applies to all of us who as you said have to deal with our own inner voice as this masterful performance by Ren demonstrates. So often I was cursing my clumsy feet and the more i fixated on all my missteps in life the more challenging the dance became.. and they led to more missteps. Ren helped me recognize i had become my own worst enemy.. that voice doesn't go away.. but when you relax.. when you don't give that voice a power over you.. ya listen.. say.. well thanks for your suggestions but I believe I'll never know if anyone is listening unless i try.. so I'm going to post it and see how it goes.. and I am here to tell Negative Rob that i am definitely here for this talented young man and his reaction to Ren.. not just here for Ren TRUST ME. Thanks for your reaction and i absolutely will be waiting with baited breath for your next reaction in the journey. Just please allow us to hitch a ride with you as you head down this rabbit hole. I have listened to many reactions to "Hi Ren", and I've only noticed it a few times, but there's several things I like about you right away. First, and I've never pointed this out, your sound quality is apparently noticeable because I'm pointing out. I really never noticed this, yet for some reason my ears heard this song more clearly than ever before. I knew the lyrics, but some reason I heard them perfectly this time.
Secondly, I saw how long your video was, and I was certain that was not going to listen to the whole thing, but I was wrong. You're funny and vulnerable, and so that really works well here. I really loved how you made fun of yourself with those classes, spoke those words those artists here, and did this all with a flu/cough and a down on yourself. Then there's "Hi Ren" that shows how much pain one can go through, and then at the creation of your most memorable song in your most vulnerable moment...a miracle of connection with others occurs, that ripples across the world and connects with everybody.
Your presentation of lighting in your background, and as I said your sound, is very soothing and comforting and you're funny. You play guitar, drums and obviously the piano, and you enjoy it.
I actually am amazed that I watched your whole video. So you must have some type of power.

It may just be me, but I feel like I just watched a young Bo Burnham react to Hi Ren. Or maybe just Bo's cousin Sko Burnham? Regardless, loved the reaction and the creativity. Never you mind that dude with the glasses.
I 100% flashed back to the kind of negative talk Bo might write into his stuff as I watched this reaction (thinking especially of Left Brain Right Brain lol) - and fun fact, I found Ren because of Bo Burnham! I was looking for video essays of 'Inside" & TH-cam kept insisting that I should qatch Hi Ren... I found reaction channels reacting to some of the songs from."Inside" and eventually TH-cam suggested that one of the reactors whose commentary I'd liked for Bo's stuff, had a reaction to this Hi Ten thing, and I went FINE, OKAY TH-cam, I'LL WATCH THE FUCKING REACTION...

I'm on the side of just being a grumpy old git who doesn't give a F..... I don't give an F what colour you are, who you sleep with, where you live, how much money you have, what you think of me.... What matters to me is not "what" you are but "who" you are as a person.... And this song epitomises that "We are human beings" and the sooner we all realise that and act like it is true, the better the world will be....

The "I got older" passage in the monologue relates to "calm, mature Ren" who emerges after the "Manic" section of the song, still "looking" in the direction of manic Ren, but having come to terms with the situation after being ill for 10 years (Back to the monologue)

You are allowed to pause when it becomes overwhelming. Ren is mesmerizing and your brain needs time to process what you just heard. What's most amazing is that Ren is a self-taught musician - Guitar, piano, strings - composer, producer, director, videographer, rapper, actor, singer, minstrel, all around good egg. Dark vs. Light. The lyrics for Ren's songs are always pinned in the comments. You get them from the source that way.
If you want backstory on the Sick Boi, there are 8 Chapters of the Story of Ren (th-cam.com/video/hQP7YoQdF3Y/w-d-xo.html). Each is about 15-20 mins long and have a corresponding song. They were made as a lead up to his song Troubles, which is the "song" for Chapter 8. It's a worthwhile watch. Some RENactors do them as part of live stream(s) to get the rest of the story from the RENegades where Ren is vague or not giving the full picture of how bad it was.
